National Debt Relief is one of the largest debt settlement companies in the nation. Its goal is to help clients re-establish financial stability and peace of mind in the least amount of time possible. The company works hard to provide experience and proven results through education and individual customer care. National Debt Relief wants individuals to achieve freedom from financial debt by receiving debt reduction services and financial consultations so that they will continue to live debt-free.

The company has quite the record of settling debts between 30 to 50 percent less than what their clients owe. Many debt management customers frequently complain about always speaking to a different person every time they call in, causing some friction in the customer experience. Additionally, fees are relatively low but have the potential to be higher than the industry average.

National Debt Relief Cost

Positive National Debt Relief reviews indicate that NDR has a low cost (18-25 percent), one of the reasons some customers love the company. National Debt Relief charges from 18 to 25 percent of the customer's total enrolled debt; the company works with all unsecured debt and some cases of secured debt.

If a customer enrolls $100,000 of debt in NDR's debt settlement program, the company can generally cut the debt by 50 percent, making your debt $50,000 instead of $100,000. If you add on the 18 to 25 percent cost for NDR's debt settlement services, you'll end up paying between $68,000 and $75,000.

Customers should be aware that cost is difficult to forecast because of the variables of each individual financial situation. To accurately measure cost, company employees must take into account the determination of creditors, the customer's credit score, and the amount of debt.

Approximate cost is usually determined in a free, no-obligation consultation with a debt expert. By law, no debt settlement company can charge upfront fees. Instead, payment isn't required until after debt is settled. Most companies allow a monthly payment plan, as is the case with National Debt Relief.

Great Service and Settlement Program

National Debt Relief offers great features including:

  • 18-25 percent fees (competitive within the industry)
  • Consultations with no fees attached
  • $7.5k minimum debt required (industry average)

Past clients of National Debt Relief have indicated that they appreciate the transparency offered by the company, the speed of debt resolution, reasonable costs, and professional level of support. Additionally, some reviews from former National Debt Relief customers who had canceled their service mentioned receiving unexpected refunds.

But how exactly does the National Debt Relief program work? The debt settlement program/process is three-way; it involves the debtor (you), the settlement company, and the creditors. With NDR, customers can expect to settle any type of unsecured debt (student loan debt, medical debt, credit card debt, etc.). Unsecured debt is debt that does not have any property attached to it as collateral (such as home loan debt or car loan debt).

It is important for customers to carefully monitor their credit score and credit report. Note that the nature of debt settlement will involve moderate to heavy penalties on your credit score; many debt settlement companies, including National Debt Relief, do not provide credit repair or credit monitoring services.

The challenge for the settlement company is to weigh the debtors present and future financial situation against the patience and requirements of the creditors. The fact that NDR is generally providing quality customer service while navigating the testy relationship between the creditors and debtors is significant.

Those with credit card debt, medical debt, and unsecured loan debt will find that NDR understands how to get ahead of creditors. Additionally, if it discovers that its debt settlement services aren't right for you, NDR will refer you to Liberty Lending for a debt consolidation loan.

The difference between a good debt settlement program and debt consolidation loans is that debt consolidation loans will weigh less heavily on your credit report while debt settlement will aim to settle your debts at a fraction of the total debt amount (sometimes as low as 30 percent of your total enrolled debt).

For debt consolidation, the company puts all of your debts into one monthly payment and tries to negotiate lower interest rates with debtors, making it easier for you to track and pay your fees.

However, some people are in too much debt to use debt consolidation programs; this is the reason for debt settlement plans.

The debt settlement fees from National Debt Relief (at 25 percent) are slightly higher than normal in the industry, but if the National Debt Relief program can get your fees down below 18 percent (a low among industry fees), you should consider using its debt settlement services.

In your search for the right debt management company, be sure to give lower fees a high priority. However, it is important to take into account how much NDR can lower the total debt from your creditors.

Creditors have been known to settle with debt settlement companies for around 30 percent of the total debt amount. To figure out how much this will cost the debtor total, you must add the companies fees (around 18 percent) to the debt settlement amount (between 30 and 50 percent). This means the customer will likely pay around 50 to 70 percent of the total debt amount.

Other Types of Debt

National Debt Relief not only works for customers in trouble with unsecured debt creditors but also some forms of secured debt as well, including private student loan debt, which is rare in this industry.

Many debt relief companies work solely with customers with unsecured debt. Additionally, the company claims to offer debt consolidation services (which do require higher credit scores), another rare occurrence in the debt relief industry.

Once NDR identifies a customer's type of debt and verifies that it can help with that specific problem, the customer will open a special savings account in their name. Instead of paying your creditors, you will deposit your money into this private savings account; this process is what will hurt your credit score most.

Industry Accreditations

Another great part about National Debt Relief's service is their industry accreditations with the American Fair Credit Council (AFCC) and the International Association of Professional Debt Arbitrators (IAPDA). National Debt Relief is also compliant with the Federal Trade Commision (FTC).

These accreditations help legitimize the organization and ensure debt settlement companies follow consumer-friendly best practices.

Money-Back Guarantee

A money-back guarantee is a must-have in the debt settlement industry. National Debt Relief offers a 100 percent money-back guarantee. Companies offer guarantees and take preventative measures in order to lessen the risk you take.

The fact that debt relief companies rarely guarantee a time or price range for settlement negotiation makes customers a bit hesitant.

To combat this, most debt arbitrators will check your credit report and ask for income information in order to ensure more accurate rates.

Availability

National Debt Relief's debt settlement and debt consolidation services are available in 42 states and territories, a higher availability than most debt relief companies. The company is not available in Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, New Hampshire, Oregon, South Carolina, Vermont, or West Virginia.

Additional Services

National Debt Relief provides additional services for those customers who would be better served by not using debt settlement. Some customers would prefer debt consolidation, bankruptcy, or simple financial education services. Of course, if one can get out of debt on their own, one should try to do so.

If a customer needs help deciding whether bankruptcy is a good option (and whether to file chapter 7 or chapter 13), National Debt Relief will council customers on the right path forward.

The company also provides extensive financial education services to help you stay on your feet after you get out of debt.

The Bad

  • Short Time in Business
  • No Permanently Assigned Rep
  • Poor Customer Reviews
  • Few Additional Services

Short Time in Business

One concern with National Debt Relief is that they have only been in business since 2009. While this is not a major problem, it is shorter than many competitors.

Additionally, the company has only been offering in-house debt settlement services since 2017, so you might not be able to deal with as many debt settlements experts at NDR as opposed to other debt settlement companies (the same goes for the company's debt consolidation services).

Usually, when customers approach the debt settlement program, it is with reluctance, poor credit scores, and few assets; this means that those with high credit card bills or medical bills are risking their credit scores on a company with lower experience than other debt relief companies.

However, those in risk of bankruptcy are still better off with NDR, as credit scores usually bounce back faster following debt settlement as opposed to the increase of credit score following bankruptcy.

No Permanently Assigned Rep

National Debt Relief does not have one representative assigned to each individual client's case. This can be frustrating for those who call in to talk about their situation with creditors or to view case information because they will often talk to a new representative each time.

Not every customer has the same type of debt or financial situation; one customer might have high student loan debt while another might have credit card debt. This can cost both the debt settlement company and the client time and cause frustration.

Independent of whether you have student loan or credit card debt, not having an assigned representative or a credit counselor can make the whole process harder to handle.

Because debt collectors are constantly harassing you, it's always good to have someone familiar to talk to about your situation. You are also more likely to get sincere customer service from companies that offer assigned reps. Every debt relief company should assign a personal rep.

Poor Customer Reviews

The most common negative national debt relief reviews relate that each time the client calls in, a different debt settlement representative takes the call.

This can lead to an inconsistent level of service and support, along with clients feeling that nobody really cares about their situation. This is especially frustrating when attempting to resolve a cancellation or a complicated debt settlement situation.

These poor customer reviews might be an indication of poor customer service, lack of credit debt expertise, or simply common industry frustrations. Other debt relief programs, such as those from CuraDebt, Freedom Debt Relief, or DS Financial Services have similar customer complaints.

Few Additional Services

The company's disclaimer states that it does not make payments to creditors, provide tax, bankruptcy, or legal advice. Some debt relief companies (both debt settlement and debt consolidation companies) provide such services in addition to the debt relief services offered.

Additionally, NDR does not offer credit repair services. Such financial and legal services can be extremely useful, as debt settlement will result in a lower credit score and has been known to prompt the occasional lawsuit against the debtor.

The Bottom Line

National Debt Relief could be a good option for those looking to obtain relief from secured debt, and we encourage those who may benefit from this to take advantage of their free consultation. The company didn't start negotiating credit card, medical, or unsecured debt in-house until 2017 (this means NDR might not have as much debt experience as other debt settlement companies).

Customers with bad credit scores due to high credit card debt, medical bills, and unsecured loans will find National Debt Relief helpful. Customers should note that a lower credit score is a likely outcome with debt settlement services and should carefully weigh the benefits of debt settlement with the negatives of a lower credit score.

We recommend customers consider National Debt Relief as an alternative to bankruptcy.

Although I hated to do it, had to call debt relief. My daughter was in a program that totally ripped her off, But I’m happy to say that National debt relief is not one to do that. They explain the terms thoroughly and not deviating from them like others. I have two accounts completely paid off that I never would’ve been able to do before. It’s nice to have somebody to help me like this And not get ripped off

If there were minus stars I’d give them -100! They left me in bigger debit than I already was. Then they refer you to a finance company where the interest in the loan is so high you’ll never pay it off. I do not recommend this company. They take everything you think is going towards your debit.

Don't Trust these guys, this company is nothing more, than people that take advantage of poor people in debt, let do the maths, DISCOVER, $13063.00 I own them, they settle for $10492.32, they receive 21% up front, that $2753.23, so the money up front puls the settlement add up to, $13235.55, you just cost me $172.00 more what I recently own DISCOVER. HOW IS THAT HELPING ME! Next CITI, before I even ask for help from them, CITI settle with me for less than $3300.00, I send National Debt Relief a letter, with that settlement on it but they choose to take 21% out of $8590.00, WHY? This company have you wait from 6 months or more before they settle your debt don't be a fool, they just fatting you up for the kill, they waiting for there 21% up front, so far this company have not save me anything so far, They put me more in debt. When I call client services about this, they acted like I was an idiot, wanted to tell me how the program worked again and when I told them I didn't a lesson in how it worked, I wanted an explanation as to why they did that, she said they didn't say that....LIARS! Then she wanted to transfer me someone else. I don't do run arounds very well and this is what they do. They took out almost 400 on the first debit and another one is supposedly coming out tomorrow. I am cancelling this and going with free one here locally or declaring bankruptcy

I have been with the company for over a year now. Their fees are 20% of debt settled which should be 20% of the savings since they might work a bit harder to settle for less. I sent them $8100 to pay off the debts already settled but they REFUSED to send lump payments to those. Instead keep settling debt and took out their fees instead of paying off the debts already settled. My complaints were replied with it's company policy... but I am the client and it's my money. Run fast away from this company. With their fees many savings were only $500 or so.

AT FIRST THEY PAINT A GREAT PICTURE, BUT ALL THE THINGS THEY SAY WILL PROVE TO BE NOT TRUE AS TIME GOES ON. WHEN WE FIRST STARTED WITH THEM, WE WERE NOT BEHIND ON ANY DEBTS, JUST STRUGGLING. WE STAYED IN THE PROGRAM A LITTLE OVER A YEAR. SINCE WE STARTED, A SHERIFF'S DEPUTY SERVED PAPERS ON US FOUR TIMES, BEEN TO COURT TWICE, BUT THEY SAY THAT'S NORMAL. AT FIRST THEY DIDN'T. WHEN WE FIRST STARTED THEY SAID WE MAY GET TWO OR THREE MONTHS BEHIND, BUT THEY HAD EVERYTHING COVERED. WE WERE PAYING THEM $1,600 MONTHLY. NOW WE HAVE BECOME OVER A YEAR BEHIND ON MOST DEBTS. THEY ARE A RIP-OFF AND A SCAM. IF YOU DON'T MIND THE EMBARRASSMENT OF HAVING A DEPUTY SHERIFF COME TO YOUR HOUSE OR PLACE OF WORK, AND GOING TO COURT, THEN THIS PROGRAM IS FOR YOU. I'M SURE THERE ARE BETTER OPTIONS.

After reading all of these terrible reviews, I wish I’d gone with a different debt consolidation program. I signed up in October 2017 and nothing has happened, aside from them taking out 2 payments a month. I haven’t heard a word from this company since the day I finalized my paperwork. I finally called and they told me to call back in 4-6 weeks because there may be more progress then. Very frustrating and I’m hoping something, anything, will be done soon.

Paid 6000 over 1 year, they have taken 3300 in fees. One account settled early saving me. One account owed 11300, they settled for 9115 and so far have taken 2373 fees on it which is 11485 total on that one. they make sure they get their fees before paying creditors. 2 other accounts settled with their fees those 2 saved me 1000. I hope they are done with fees on those 3. That's 800 saved on 3 accounts unless they keep charging me. Look elsewhere. I still have 3 more creditors to go.

I'm a senior citizen on a fixed income. I got into a bind with online payday loans. I talked to a representative with this company and it sounded great and something I could live with. This company then turn over my account to Consumer Capital Credit. They take $284.82 out of my checking account every month and have been from 6 to 9 months. I called today to get an update on the status of my accounts to see what has been paid and if any of them were paid off. I was informed that nothing has been paid on any of my accounts and nothing has been paid off. I could have paid 2 of these off myself in the time that it has taken Consumer Capital Credit. My question is where is my money going and what are you doing with it. Again, I'm on a fixed income and cannot afford to throw $284.82 away every month. I need some help please.

I have 6 accounts with NDR, totaling almost $35K. I had gotten to the point of making minimum payments only and was making zero headway on my debt. It probably would have taken me 20 years to pay that off, and I would have paid around double that amount with all the interest. So, I bit the bullet and called in October 2017. Customer Service has been excellent. Creditor calls are brutal, but I am willing to suffer through the 33 month plan with NDR (29 left!) to save myself 15+ years of digging myself out. My first account was just settled for about 50% of the balance. I'm excited to follow through with this effort and become debt-free. NDR can take their fees for that; I'll gladly pay.

I signed up with this company back in 2015 with a total debt of around 12k. I wish I would have shopped around and read the reviews. This company will fee you to death! On Jan 12th, 2018, I made my final 2 payments to my last 2 credit cards. Each was $725. I was thinking this was perfect! I have more than enough money in my account to cover this because I just deposited my entire bonus check in there back in December. Not to mention I was still making the regular monthly payments. ...was even thinking I would get some money back. Boy, was I wrong. With looking at my statement I noticed my account balance was at $0. How could that be? With more investigation I discovered they charged me a $740.50 fee for each transaction! So my debt payment was $725 and you charged me a fee of $740.50? On both of them?? I had a remaining debt of $1450 which I paid and now I have to pay a fee of $1481? WHAT??? So my fees to them were more than my debt payoff to the credit card company??? That didn't seem right...not at all. I called, talked to a very nice woman about this but she only had basic answers and her manager was even worse. Bless her heart, it's not her fault that she works for a POS company but I had some choice words to say about what the hell they are doing to people. So with my story being told, I would suggest that anyone who is as desperate as I was with resolving my debt, please shop around and figure out which is the best company to use. Going this route destroys your credit even more! It might even be best to try and work out a payment arrangement with your credit card companies....at least that will look somewhat good on your credit and with all the fees this company charges, you're pretty much paying your entire debt anyways.

I began with this company in February of 2014 and completed the program as of August of this year (2017). I just finished an excel spreadsheet analyzing how much I paid in fees and how much they were able to settle accounts. Overall (between the fees they charge the settlement amounts paid) I wound up paying 76% of what I owed in debt. The reality of it is, an individual can settle their own debt themselves if they have enough self control to set aside a monthly minimum to pay their debtors. All the debtors accepted a monthly payment until the settlement amount was reached. One account wound up filing a law suit but NDR was quick to communicate and settle with the debtor before it ever reached court. Needless to say, between the fees and their lack to settle ALL accounts for 50% or less than what is owed ... it's not really worth it. I wouldn't recommend this company and I'm glad the program is over. I actually had to remove an account toward the end because they refused to negotiate until the account went to a 3rd party collection company. It was the last account and the money to pay it was just sitting there. I got smart and saved myself the headache by removing this creditor from the program and ending the program rather than waiting for them and letting the account age further. About a year into the program and already have 33% of debt resolved....and it was a lot. Staff are always helpful.

Chances are with the High Fee's and Lawsuits against you under this program you will not actually save any money from your current debt and may in fact end up paying more then the original amount you owed. They are Not trustworthy, they don't actively talk with all your creditors until it may be to late, critical errors that lead to lawsuits and additional legal fees which they should’ve paid but didn’t. Also encountered surprisingly rude reps a couple of times. Study contract carefully before committing. Their settlements won’t always be as high as you think; High fees accumulate, are not trivial; projected number of payments may be based on you making extra deposits you didn’t commit to; may tell you monthly deposits must increase or risk extending your payments; some accounts may be sit around until frustrated creditors file suit. Also note that any settlements above $500 are reported to IRS. You’ll receive a 1099-C form and many will owe income tax on these amounts. These are additional fees that I didn’t find out about until I received my first 1099-C. NDR never mentioned this pre-contract. I regret not managing my own debt settlement. It’s not rocket science, folks. Main reason for going with NDR was to make sure I didn’t get sued. I got sued, it never should’ve happened.

Good customer service overall but a couple of their reps made critical errors that led to a lawsuit and additional legal fees which they should've paid but didn't. Also encountered surprisingly rude reps a couple of times. Potential clients: study contract carefully before committing. Their settlements won't always be as high as you think; fees accumulate, are not trivial; projected number of payments may be based on you making extra deposits you didn't commit to; may tell you monthly deposits must increase or risk extending your payments; some accounts may be sit around until frustrated creditors file suit. It's not rocket science, folks. Main reason for going with NDR was to make sure I didn't get sued. I got sued, it was avoidable, never should've happened. Five stars is fair based on my experience.

Don't use this company!!! I've been in this program for eight months. The fees are unbelievably high with over $1500 charged. They made arrangements with one company and called me asking for additional money every month. Then I requested they not deduct a deposit from my bank for one month because I needed the money for surgery. They wanted to know what kind of surgery and how much it costs. They needed to tell the creditor so they could "approve it." I am in the process of cancelling this service. There are way too many fees and I could have paid the bills myself with the amount they charged. Stay away from this company!!! Also, the BBB gave them a NR for no rating!

I have talked to several Debt Relief companies. That amount of calls and emails from them eagerly waiting to cash in on my financial misery surpassed the amount of calls from creditors 2 to 1.

Great company, however the agent I spoke with over the phone was very rushed in his delivery when going over the services this agency provides. When I asked questions, he was insensitive toward the situation and rushed over the answers, leaving me frustrated in terms of what to do. I almost felt like I was prying for information from my agent. He had good suggestions, but delivery came off as insensitive. They are a great company with great things to offer, however the agents may need to work on customer service and delivering in a slower, more patient and sensitive manner as clients who usually call are frustrated and need sensitivity toward their situations.

NDR has been working since December 2016 on settling my two debts. So far in just fees, I have paid over $1600!!! They fee you to death. I would not recommend this company. Read the fine print before going with anyone. Consolidation Plus is a good company I have been told. I wish I could get out of this nightmare.

If you are needing relief from your debt, DO NOT use this company. They tell you not to pay any of your bills but instead send your money to a specified bank and for me that was $314 each month. They tell you they will get started negotiating with your creditors right away to settle for a reduced amount. However, THEY ONLY USE YOUR MONEY to pay off the reduced amount. So figure....If I owed $5,000 on a credit card and they say they usually get the debt reduced by 50%, then they must wait until YOU have deposited at least $2500 into the account before they can do that. Lets figure...$2500 divided by $314 = 7.96. Otherwise I have to make at least 8 payments before they will start the negotiating process. That's 8 months of phone calls from the creditor. NOTE: That is for just the first credit card, and I have 5 total so it will take years to complete THEIR process. If you need help, file bankruptcy. It stops the calls quicker and your settlement will be quicker and easer OR you have the choice to just stop paying the bills and deal with the calls. If you ask them to stop calling, by law, they are suppose to quit calling...if they don't, then you can file suit against them. I have consulted two lawyers and both said just what I told you. It is your choice.

I've had a great experience with NDR so far. I began this program in October 2016 and have already have settled 3/4 credit cards I had. Each is for less than the amount that was owed; averaging about 60% less than what was originally owed! Each time I speak to a customer service representative they have been very excited about these settlements and eager to offer additional assistance. I was a good customer to the creditors before, regularly paying on time, but I was finding it difficult to get ahead of the payments. It also helped to close the accounts so I could not have access to available credit and you are also restricted from opening new unsecured lines of credit which helps with the temptation of accumulating more debt. This is a business so, of course, they will need to receive payment for their services. They disclosed the details of the entire process, stating that it may take up to 6-24 months before settlements start coming in. I was encouraged to be patient and to stick with the program from the beginning and now I'm very pleased with the results and will be debt free in the very near future!

I have never done business with this company They keep calling me even after I've told them, repeatedly, not to call me. It has reached the level that I am considering contacting a lawyer and going after them for harassment

I have been with NDR since 03/24/2015 and so far two accounts have been settled which I am not happy with. Citicard settled for 43% of the 2943. However, the 25% fee was very high of $732.75. If you do the calculation .... 2943 settled for 1265 is not very good. 1265 plus 732.75 fee = 1998 and I only benefitted a saving of 945.00. Another example recently my Discover was settled for 1240 at 73% for a balance of 1621. NDR did not do a very good job with this one. I am actually paying more than the original balance. 1240 settlement plus 403 fee is just like making a payment plan. I still have four other accounts and just imagine what the outcome would be like because, in my opinion, they do not get very good offer of settlement. This is what I have experience so far. If I do get something like 35% or less, they I will be happy. Another down side is... once you enroll, they forget about you and do not even contact you with what is going on other than rehashing what you as a client already are aware of.

I tried for years to stay ahead, get ahead and most of the time stay current. The last time I worked out of town and received my check late by 4 days i had $250.00 in late fees AGAIN. I tried to work with all creditors asking to just pay the balance even though I had paid the balance 5 x over plus interest in the past years. No one would work with me. I turned to National Debt Releif and this was one of the hardest things I ever did. It took me almost one year to keep trying to do it on my own. In four months of being with them my first account is settled. I feel great. The calls have stopped. I have peace. So much stress is gone. I make one monthly payment and can actually do home repairs that were very bad. If you can't hang on anymore due to debt, these are the people to help you.

Love them, I have been enrolled since 2014 and all of my accounts have been settled except for 2. They answered all of my questions when I enrolled. The customer service is good. I have spoken to several people when I call in, but each of them are always helpful and assists me with any issue. I am happy I enrolled with them. I placed 10 accounts with them and 7 of my accounts were settled quickly and for amounts that were affordable to me. I am always consulted before a settlement is accepted. I have had no problems, and my bank account is drafted twice a month on the correct dates. I have never had any problems with payments being made to creditors on time, not once in 2 years!
