Short Time in Business

One concern with National Debt Relief is that they have only been in business since 2009. While this is not a major problem, it is shorter than many competitors. For example, Freedom Debt Relief has been in business for over 20 years.

Additionally, the company has only been offering in-house debt settlement services since 2017, so you might not be able to deal with as many debt settlements experts at NDR as opposed to other debt settlement companies (the same goes for the company's debt consolidation services).

Usually, when customers approach the debt settlement program, it is with reluctance, poor credit scores, and few assets; this means that those with high credit card bills or medical bills are risking their credit scores on a company with lower experience than other debt relief companies.

However, those in risk of bankruptcy are still better off with NDR, as credit scores usually bounce back faster following debt settlement as opposed to the increase of credit score following bankruptcy.

No Permanently Assigned Representative

National Debt Relief does not have one representative assigned to each individual client's case. This can be frustrating for those who call in to talk about their situation with creditors or to view case information because they will often talk to a new representative each time.

Not every customer has the same type of debt or financial situation; one customer might have high student loan debt while another might have credit card debt. This can cost both the debt settlement company and the client time and cause frustration.

Independent of whether you have student loan or credit card debt, not having an assigned representative or a credit counselor can make the whole process harder to handle.

Because debt collectors are constantly harassing you, it's always good to have someone familiar to talk to about your situation. You are also more likely to get sincere customer service from companies that offer assigned reps. Every debt relief company should assign a personal rep.

Few Additional Services

The company's disclaimer states that it does not make payments to creditors, provide tax, bankruptcy, or legal advice. Some debt relief companies (both debt settlement and debt consolidation companies) provide such services in addition to the debt relief services offered. For example, if you are overwhelmed by secured debt, National Debt Relief's services may not be available to you.

Some confusion about getting emails that don't do anything. Was not indicated that I needed to call but that seemed to be the case. Was taken care of ok by the person who answered the phone when I did call. Old lady. Need a little more feeling of care and a willingness and ability to slow down. Use a line for seniors at my grocery company. That has been very useful. I am having to ask the NDR folks to repeat themselves many times. My aging brain just doesn't quite keep up.

Neutral--Was never told that I need to deposit 25% of debt for them to make arrangements. My credit score has gone down dramitically. They are securing payment plans which are exactly what the creditors offfer yet they get paid. Calls have not stopped, gotten worse actually. I ask myself why I didn't just do this myself? My biggest creditors with the highest balances are not paid first. They pay the low hanging fruit while my credit gets worse...

Overall it's been okay. But this service is not reducing my debt it's more like a debt restructuring. NDR claims to be able to negotiate notable amounts less than owed, but not really. That with the 20% fee has done nothing to actually save any money.

While my initial interview with NDR went very well, I feel that the subsequent interaction with the "signing" of my contracts was not handled as well as it should have been. There was a mistake made in my bank routing number so my initial transaction was delayed by 2 weeks (needed to re-sign a correct contract). There is also my concern that the actual timing of the payment for their service is not fully detailed in the interviewing process. It came as a surprise to me that I will be paying large amounts of money for their service before I have made any substantial progress in "paying down" the negotiated debt that NDR arranged for me. The large amounts I will be paying to NDR will impact my ability to expect settlements in my remaing debts. Overall, the concept that NDR works with is probably the best in the long-run for me, but I am having a very difficult time with the persistent emails, text messages, and phone calls by the accounts I owe. NDR suggests that you change your telephone number on each account to the NDR number. This does not work, as some of the accounts had software which would not accept a number change without an appropriate address change. The few that accepted the number change just reverted to my number within a week. And that is not even taking the "snail mail" into consideration!

I am paying less, and saving money, thankfully. But I have been enrolled for months with only 2 settlement offers so far. The monthly fee to them seems pretty high too, however, that is how they make their money so that would explain why it takes over 6 months to get a settlement offer. I have known friends that used other companies and had their payoffs completed in 2 years or so and I am expected to pay for 4 years...that is ALOT of fee money collected. But again, I am able to save some money since enrolling, so I can't complain too much. Not bad over all, just seems to be slow to settle in order to collect those fees.

1) LIKES: They provide legal representation if you get taken to court by any of your creditors that they have accepted/enrolled in your program. They allowed me to make no payments for 90 days when my employer cut my paycheck by 40% because of COVID-19. 2) DISKLIKES: When they tell me how much I saved, they overstate the amount because they never deduct their fee (20% of initial balance) from the amount I supposedly saved. Example: I had a debt of $5,486 that they negotiated down to $4,300. They told me I "saved" the difference of $1,186. They fee they charged me to do this was $1,097. Overall, the true savings to my checking account was only $89! BOTTOM LINE: THEY HABITUALLY MISREPRESENT/OVERSTATE THE AMOUNT OF "SAVINGS" THAT THEY DELIVER TO THEIR CUSTOMERS BY OMITTING THIER FEES.

I feel totally deceived by the company. I felt lied to that my debt could be consolidated in up to 6 months. I only had 20 grand and now over two years later while I will give it that my one 10k loan is paid off and that credit card is closed out, I am no where near close to even being closed out on a personal loan or the other credit card. My score dropped over 100 points. Then they have the nerve to think that I would trust them with some other loan through them to pay off the last of my debt? No. I was manipulated into believing this was going to take up to 6 months and I’m closer to 2 Years 6 months just so you could say what you needed to say a helpless lost young woman trying to do the best thing she thought to turn her finances around and I was capitalized on. Can’t wait to be done.

They are both good and bad. I was happy I was signed up, since AMEX is very aggressive and they took me to course almost immediately. NDR was able to get me a lawyer to file the paperwork and they still got me a settlement offer. However, with their fee structure, I didn't really save any money. I think I ended up paying like $400 less that what my balance was. Also, they took their fee out of my savings before making a single payment to my creditors, so my balance available to negotiate decreased by almost $2k and I was required to give them more money to keep up with my payments. That was not cool since I was already paying them nearly $500 a month. I think NDR was worth it just for the peace of mind and them handling all the legal paperwork. But I ended up unenrolling my other debts from the program. The fees are too high and they take them out in a way that impacts your ability to negotiate quickly. I would only recommend NDR if you have lots of creditors, it's your last resort, or you are working with creditors likely to litigate (like Amex)

3 stars due to the fact that you don’t work with minimum payments, meaning my minimum payment puts me in financial hardship every month. Also, I know this is somewhat petty, but my payment is scheduled every month on the 18th. This month it falls on a Monday. For some reason it was debited from my account on Saturday the 16th. Good thing I had the money in the account or that would have been a bad phone call to make. Probably cancelling the program. I understand if the pay date falls on a Sunday or holiday, but it should have not been debited until the correct date. The program so far has saved me some money and I do look forward to completing it in the next year.

I feel there is communication delay..if I email , it takes too long to get a response and when I call, I feel the reps have to be filled in, instead of knowing my history. I'm not really confident when I hang up sometimes. The sign up process was a lot of work, I think you guys need to streamline that process and make it more convenient for a new registrant. Get more into settling student loan debt. You want $4-5k to begin negotiations but that can take months. Student loan providers are super aggressive and threatening, time is of the essence, especially when they want to sue. You guys need to get into helping us with that at the bare minimum. It is a HUGE burden on millenials. Your email and website are a little confusing. We need layman's terms. Especially when you guys are settling a debt. I really am confused on the communications that I get. Especially if there is a itemized list, it is not clear at all. Very shorthand and confusing. Make it easier to change the payment date, it happens sometimes..I've only done it 2x but when I call, its almost like you feel like you are in trouble.

Hi ,it's been about 5 months and one creditor has been settled so far, this was less than a week ago and it is one of the largest as well. I know this process takes time ,but it's a bit daunting because my credit scores has always been good, so now of course it's low now, but it's still early...the customer service has been wonderful so far too.

They did in fact inform me from the beginning that it would take a while before any agreements may be made but I was getting worried because there was no communication from them. I watched as my balances riser on my credit cards with no idea what was happening. I would call and speak with a representative and the answer give was "it takes awhile". I didn't know they only contact one creditor at a time. I am hoping it ends well as stated in the agreement.

Easy sign up and great pep talk, then 4 months of crickets. I received a collection letter and emailed NDR and uploaded the document. I thought I was supposed to receive a reply within 48 hours but still haven't received a response. Obviously I was excited about hearing that one of my debts was settled but I still have a terrible feeling in my stomach.

When I first signed up I was led in the wrong direction By this companys employees but after understanding how it works it has been a great experience but I think they could have been more informative when I was signing up and I would’ve made better decisions But they have help me start to become debt-free and I have got two offers that are amazing

T thought the amount taken out of my check each month went tiward my resolution payment. I didn't realize more money would be taken out in addition to monthly payment. Im on a fixed income and i don't have any extra money at all that can go toward resolution. I was going to have to pay 190.00$$ in addition to the 250.00 monthly payment..This is impossible. If i had that kind of money i wouldn't have had to use debt resolution ..thank you Clois Williams

They call and ask you for approval for a debt settlement before they go through with it. They told me that it takes 4-6 months to settle a debt. They settled all my debts but 1 and it’s been a year and that debt still hasn’t been settled yet. They also charged me a $600 fee for one of my debts without even telling me about it or what it’s for.

Ndr told me everything I wanted to hear. In the beginning the immediate results were welcomed. However, I’m still receiving calls even though I forwarded to all my creditors ndr would be handling my debt. I was initially told once I did this ndr legal department would handle the calls and stop the harassment . I was also told Ndr would quickly resolve debt but some of the payments to the creditors like a 12 week payment with very small payments to one creditor, while no other payments to other creditors are being made is baffling.

We were very happy at first,you were doing very well with our account but lately we are a little disappointed with what is happening . We keep getting letters from chase and we forward them to you yet we still keep getting them. Also I increased my payment and also sent in an extra $2000 and you used it to pay some of your own fees instead of using it to help pay off some of our debt. You haven't paid off penny's. I thought your fees were paid at the end. We are hoping that you work on helping us on our debt and stop getting nasty letters from chase bank. Thank-you

I like that eventually I will be debt free and that they negotiate on my behalf. Not too thrilled that about the amount of time it is taking to settle my last account. Also they indicated in the beginning that we could negotiate what would be on my credit score but now they act like it’s a foreign concept very far removed from this process and their capabilities.

I do have mixed feeling about your performance. During April or May of 2018, I registered in your program. I was told it would take 18 - 24 months. My final payment was set for April 2020. One of the creditors did not readily accept the offer, but that amount remained in the calculation for April 2020, I checked my status, only to be told that my debt payment is due to end in January 2020. How could that be? Tell me it's a mistake.

I have 4 account inrolled in the program, three of them are settled, I had a offer for the 4th account, but National Debt Relief on two occasions denied the offer I had from the last account, says if I accepted the offer that I would do so on my own!!! Is this a way to keep me in the program longer just to get more money from me!!! This is how I felt, and I should be the ultimate authority to make decisions with my accounts!!!

I'm deeply disappointed with NDR because I fail to see any activity in my account. The reason given by NDR is that they are waiting until I accumulate enough funds in my account so that they can pursue settlement agreements with my creditors. I'm not buying this reason. All they are doing is collecting interest off of my money and charging me a fee to do so.

William, we're sorry your experience hasn't met your expectation. Let's see if we can clarify any misunderstandings you may have. Firstly, the money in the savings account doesn't generate interest. The account isn't interest-bearing and its sole purpose is to hold and save your monthly drafts. Secondly, remember, we aren't a bank or a lender. The funds we will eventually use to repay the creditors comes from your monthly drafts. Think about this: when you enroll your accounts, let's say we start negotiating immediately and we have a settlement within (1) month. Your creditor will expect payments to start right away. If you don't have money in your savings account. we can't make those payments for you, so the negotiation would have been a waste. Any subsequent negotiations may not yield a result as favorable. This is why we must wait until there's enough in the savings account before we start the process. I like them, however, I don't appreciate getting an email you agreed on said number, I approve said number then a few hours later getting a new email saying you agreed on a new and higher said number. Then you wouldn't even lessen your fees to make up the difference. Don't send emails to customers saying you agreed on a number until it's actually for sure the number. Super unprofessional and makes the customer extremely upset.

I talk to different people all the time!!! I feel that there is no rush to negotiate by NDR! I get a settlement from the debtor; I email it to NDR and they don't jump on it? I get a loan from Reality but I don't get actual payments from my monthly deposits to a particular settlement?

I still do not understand how 1 debtor can get $275 monthly out of a $477 when no other debtors have been scheduled and I owe them much more and certainly the other debtors will want more than the remainder of the $477 after the $275 is deducted.
