Summary

Freedom Debt Relief, a subsidiary of Freedom Financial Network, has resolved billions in consumer debt since its founding in 2002.

The company has considerable industry experience and high client satisfaction ratings.

With all the major industry accreditations, Freedom Debt Relief (FDR) is a great option for many consumers. Its minimum debt requirement is $7,500. Freedom Debt Relief accepts clients dealing with financial hardship that meet this threshold and clients that can make regular payments to an account to pay for settlements. Freedom Debt Relief employs professional debt experts to negotiate and settle debt for those suffering financial hardship.

The company offers a debt settlement program that involves negotiating with creditors to lower total debt owed and is available in 40 states. It does not, however, offer debt management plans or credit counseling for those not interested in debt settlement, as Freedom Debt Relief is a debt settlement company.

On average, Freedom Debt Relief charges 22 percent of your total enrolled debt, which means the cost varies depending on your financial situation. To settle a $20,000 debt, it will cost around $4,000.

As opposed to a debt consolidation company which consolidates all of a customer's debt into one consolidation loan and one monthly payment, debtors approach Freedom Debt Relief as a last resort in order to escape high amounts of debt and avoid declaring bankruptcy.

The Bottom Line

Freedom Debt Relief's debt negotiation experience is worth the money. If you're looking to settle your debt through debt negotiation and a reliable debt relief program, we highly recommend using Freedom Debt Relief if you receive a reasonable quote from the company during your free consultation.

Services

Services Offered: Debt Settlement, Free Consultation

States Serviced:

As a leading debt settlement company, Freedom Debt Relief offers several services and features to its customers, including

  • Free consultation with a Certified Debt Consultant
  • Relief for unsecured debts (credit card debt, medical debt, personal loan debt, or department store credit debt)
  • A free debt evaluation
  • An online dashboard to track your progress
  • Debt negotiation
  • Debt settlement
  • And more

Freedom Debt Relief offers a free consultation with a highly trained, IAPDA-certified debt consultant when a consumer decides to enlist the company's debt settlement services.

According to a four-year study by Freedom Debt Relief, its customers start the program with a median of $28,000 in debt, which decreases to $3,800 after 45 months in the program. The graph below shows the decrease in debt over time and how this directly affects the increase in customers' credit scores.

Decrease in debt over time

One feature that sets FDR apart from the rest is a unique and intuitive online dashboard to track clients' pace throughout the program. This helps people to actually see their progress while settling their debts. It also offers education to help clients improve their financial knowledge.

Not many debt settlement companies in the industry offer this debt relief service as part of their packages.

Pricing

Minimum Debt Requirement: $7,500

How much does Freedom Debt Relief cost?

On average, Freedom Debt Relief charges $4,000 to settle $20,000 in debt, or about 20-22 percent of total debt. If Freedom Debt Relief cuts your debt in half, you would end up paying $14,000 instead of $20,000.

Users are charged an average of 22 percent of their total debt to use FDR. While this number is in line with their competitors, it is only an average. Customers could end up paying more or less than this to use FDR. FDR's prices range between 15 and 25 percent. The rates vary depending on the state the client lives in.

Current national debt relief trends indicate that debt settlement companies tend to charge a percentage of enrolled debt as opposed to saved debt. This means that the more total debt you have, the more debt settlement companies will charge you.

Although working with a debt settlement firm still saves you from paying thousands of dollars to creditors, it's better to work with companies that charge a percentage of saved debt rather than enrolled debt.

So exactly how much will Freedom Debt Relief cost you? It will cost you around 22 percent of your total enrolled debt, but you will have to have a consultation to get an accurate estimate. The fee is competitive for the industry. The fee is assessed when a successful settlement is reached.

However, Freedom Debt Relief's services are high quality and make it easier to make your way to living debt-free.

What is Freedom Debt Relief's minimum debt requirement?

Freedom Debt Relief has a minimum debt requirement of $7,500. This means if you are looking to settle or reduce your debt but you do not meet this threshold, you will have to find another debt relief company with a lower minimum debt requirement.

However, Freedom Debt has a lower minimum requirement than some other top debt relief companies we have reviewed, so it is still standard for the industry, if not slightly more inclusive and available than some other debt relief companies.

What Customers Are Saying

Want to read real Freedom Debt Relief reviews from verified customers? Do so here. We've also included a snapshot of how customers rank Freedom Debt in terms of value, quality, service, and trustworthiness.

Positive Reviews

Most Freedom Debt reviews on Best Company are positive. People commend FDR for having good customer service, explaining debt management, and keeping them updated on where they are at in the debt settlement program.

Clients drowning in high amounts of unsecured debt (credit card debt, personal loans, medical debt, student loan debt) usually find that the company can save them from paying a large percentage of what they owe. One Freedom Debt Relief review even states that the company helped him save several thousand dollars in interest as well as settling all of his outstanding debt.

Despite the debt settlement program's tendency to negatively affect credit scores in the first six months, clients with mountains of credit card debt find it extremely helpful for debt reduction. It's also important for people to know that forgiven debt is considered taxable income, so you may owe more in taxes when using debt settlement services.

Complaints

While most of the Freedom Debt Relief reviews are positive, there are still several Freedom Debt Relief clients who have complaints about the debt relief company. The two main complaints that people seem to have are the following:

  • Debt settlement takes too long or isn't as effective as people hoped
  • FDR charges too much for its services, sometimes costing consumers up to 25 percent of their total enrolled debt

These complaints are fairly common within the debt settlement industry. It's important for clients to be fully informed about what debt settlement is and how it works. Potential clients should use the free consultation to learn more about the time it takes to reach a settlement and specific price information.

About the Company

Accreditations: AFCC, IAPDA

Is Nonprofit: No

Time in Business: 20 Years

Experience and Accreditations

As an accredited debt relief company, Freedom Debt Relief has over 17 years of experience in the debt settlement industry. It has settled over two million accounts since its founding and regularly settles over 50,000 accounts monthly.

In fact, Freedom Debt was one of the founding members of the American Fair Credit Council (AFCC), which now accredits other debt relief companies and sets the standard for best practices in the credit advocacy industry. The company is also a platinum member of the International Association of Professional Debt Arbitrators.

Freedom Debt Relief has years of experience standing between the creditor and the client. FDR will work to obtain settlements that resolve credit card debt (or any type of unsecured debt, such as personal loan debt or medical debt).

FDR will walk clients through the debt settlement process: first, customers will voluntarily choose to stop making monthly payments to lenders. Instead, clients will elect to make a monthly deposit into a separate special purpose account to save money to pay for the settlements once negotiated. Freedom Debt Relief will then work to negotiate a settlement on behalf of its clients.

Unfortunately, this settlement process will affect your credit score. If you miss any minimum payments on your credit card or other debt, this will decrease your credit score. A four-year study by Freedom Debt Relief found that its customers' credit scores dropped in the first six months of the debt settlement program, then began to recover. According to the study, most customers' credit scores recovered to their previous position by the time they completed the Freedom Debt Relief program. It's smart to have a plan for boosting your credit score before you start the debt settlement process.

The graph below shows Freedom Debt Relief's customers' credit scores over time as they improve their debt through the company's program.

Freedom Debt Relief's customers' credit scores over time

How does Freedom Debt Relief work?

Freedom Debt Relief doesn't charge an upfront fee or any other fees until after debt is settled with creditors. This practice is standard for the industry. Debt relief companies, like National Debt Relief and Pacific Debt, also do not have upfront fees.

Upon enrollment, customers will open an FDIC-insured bank account that the client controls. Clients will put all of their money that would have gone toward paying their debt into this bank account instead. This is the main reason why this program hurts your credit score more than debt consolidation.

Next, FDR or its representatives or agents will negotiate with your creditors to settle on debt to pay.

Freedom Debt Relief makes money by charging fees on the enrolled debt amount. Its average fees are a bit high (around 22 percent fees on enrolled debt), but its services are thorough.

The company's ability to help clients find an easier road to financial freedom and paying off debt is highly valuable.

Should I have any concerns about Freedom Debt Relief?

Limited Availability

Freedom Debt Relief offers debt settlement programs in only 40 states. If Freedom Debt Relief does not offer its debt relief program in your state, you'll have to consider other debt settlement companies.

Most debt settlement companies have a minimum debt requirement to ensure a payout. A debt settlement company that charges by saved debt will not run into this problem as much.

Freedom Debt Relief requires a minimum debt amount of $7,500 (the amount of which is charged fees between 15 and 25 percent). While this threshold is low compared to other debt settlement companies, it does rule out people struggling with lower debt amounts.

An additional limitation with Freedom Debt Relief is that the company only works with debtors with unsecured debt. Freedom Debt Relief is not an option for those struggling with secured debt. The difference between unsecured and secured debt is that unsecured debt is not backed by assets or collateral, while secured debt is.

Limited Services

Some debt relief agencies provide services outside of debt settlement, such as credit counseling, advocating for a lower interest rate on your debt, or debt management plans. However, Freedom Debt Relief does not offer these services.

As such, if you choose to go with Freedom Debt Relief to help you work toward resolving your debt, be aware that you will be signing up for a debt settlement program, and may still receive calls from a debt collector or face the risk of a negative impact on your credit score.

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Lawsuit

In 2019, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Freedom Debt Relief reached an agreement that FDR would do the following:

  • Make it clear that in some cases, FDR may not be able to negotiate a debt if the creditor is unwilling to negotiate
  • Let consumers know that, in some cases, the creditor will only negotiate if the client is also directly involved in the negotiations, and that the consumer has the right to refuse to participate in the negotiations and can remove the debt from their program without penalty
  • Make it clearer to consumers under what circumstances they will be charged a fee
  • Stop charging fees on all accounts where the settlement amount was not reduced, or where the creditor wrote off the debt on their own
  • Make it clearer to consumers that, if they end their program early, any money left in their program savings account belongs to them, minus any funds earned by the company according to legal statutes
  • Pay restitution money to injured consumers
  • Pay a civil penalty

It's a good idea for potential clients to do some research on the process, consumers' rights, and industry standards for settlement companies before setting up a free consultation with a debt settlement service. It's also recommended to read recent customer reviews to get a better sense of Freedom Debt Relief's commitment to clients and how good its settlement services are.

Palm Harbor, FL
I was in the program for 4 yrs and then was offered a loan, with the Consolidated Loan part of the company and totally was misunderstanding the loan officer because of previous talks I had with him and told him that I could not pay more than I'm paying now, and that I pd that amount in two payments so when I went through the contract the amount of my monthly payment was the amount was less than my current amount I had been paying freedom debt and so I thought the amounts was listed as being taken out bimonthly I understood that at that figure would be divided in half because that's how I had discussed it ,, but when it came to start paying the loan payments my payment was double the amount I had been paying and now at the age of 78 I am worse of financially than I have ever been in my life, it's devastating. The loan officer never came out and said this amount will be a total of the number shown.. it did give numbers listed that were options, but I understood by monthly as the $371 was to be divided into two payments instead of a total of $742 as a payment.. now I cannot pay that payment and they will not work with me..

It’s nice to have my bills cut down and paid. However, the companies do not consider the money they get as payment and it still goes against your credit. FDR charges a high processing charge monthly also. My husband and I were on a plan similar to this years back and it seemed to go on for less time and our credit did not get affected this bad. We are also going through a pandemic. Fees should be less. One other really important point is that you need to set up customers with their own particular Agent. Someone who knows your case. I have no trust. I have called about the same issue and received 2 totally different answers from different agents. Not good. We cannot wait until we are done with FDR. Thank You

It's a good move to pay off debt, however, Freedom Debt is taking more money from clients than they rightfully should. They also don't work for their clients in a timely manner for the best outcome of the clients they have.t however Freedo

We appreciate you voicing your concerns regarding our program, Cheyenne. We ask you to consider the following when it comes to our settlement fees. Our program payments are often much lower than the required monthly minimum from creditors, offering clients some cash-flow relief immediately along with lower costs in the long run, even when accounting for our fee. The good news is if you can afford the monthly deposit, our fees are already included! Compare our fees to the 100% debt + interest % + late fees + penalty fees if someone can't meet the monthly required minimum payment. We offer a proven solution at an affordable monthly cost that helps our clients pay down their entire debt - principal, fees, interest and all. Trust in knowing our negotiators will always take the first opportunity to obtain the best settlements possible. We encourage you to speak with our Client Services team to learn what options are available that would allow you to accelerate your Graduation Path. Client Services is available 7 days a week to support your financial needs. Your feedback is valued. Thank you for trusting Freedom Debt Relief to serve your financial needs.

Due to the amount of time it took and interest and fees being accrued with creditors and fees charged by FDR, even after the "50%" reduced debt I ended up paying the same amount I would've just paid to the creditors. And my credit score didn't benefit in any way. In short I could have just closed the accounts and paid off the balance myself and benefited more. I wasn't going to bring this up but I was sent numerous emails asking over and over so there's my experience.

For the first 8 months or so my experience was extremely good with Freedom Debt Relief. Once I started dealing with some of my bigger debts my experience hasn't been as good. Particularly with one customer care representative in specific. The way my debt was getting resolved at first made me excited, but soon it turned to disappointment. I was so depleted on funds paying settlements and fees that I was almost not able to reach an agreement with one of my debts. This caused me to have to raise my monthly deposit by a lot. It's going to make the rest of my obligations hard to meet outside if the program.

Thank you for expressing your concerns with us, Jesse. We are constantly working to better our client's experience in our program. Please understand our settlement fees are a bigger savings than having to pay your creditors the full balance of the debt owed, plus the interest, plus any additional fees they charge. I cannot rate this until they actually give me back my overage and provide the graduation package they've promised me for nearly 2 months now. I've had to call them four times since I completed the program and they have not only misdirected me on the first three calls, but did not follow through in getting the graduation packet to me. The fourth call I am hoping is successful and I should finallyseethe overage back in my back account to the tune of $700+. Very frustrating having to follow up so many times to keep demanding what they should have already taken care of. Please note that Gail a customer service agent gets 5 stars from me. The previous three agents get 1 star from me.

My experience has been pretty good. What I didn't know in the beginning was how long it would take to start a resolution. I also learned that the same settlements were offered to me directly from the creditor so I wouldn't not of had to pay all these fees which are factored into the settlements between Freedom and the creditor. Also, there was one account that they marked as settled but I continued to get calls from the collectors about daily. When I called Freedom about this issue they didn't even know that the account was still outstanding because they marked it as settled. I am still trying to figure out where my 2 payments to this creditor went.

Reply from Freedom Debt Relief

We apologize, Ms. Lonati, if the proper expectations were not set for you. Making sure we educate our clients regarding what to expect when enrolled with us is top priority. Also, the creditor may have offered settlement options to you. However, please know that our negotiators resolve nearly 44,000 creditor accounts each month. Negotiating with hundreds of creditors over the past 16 years gives us a huge leverage in being able to obtain the best settlements possible for all of our clients. You made mention of an account that we show as resolved, but the creditor is still attempting to collect on the remaining balance. We are very sorry to hear you are dealing with this situation. One of our team members will be reaching out to you shortly using the contact information we have on file. We certainly want to make sure that us and the creditor are on the same page when it comes to the balance. Thank you for honest feedback.

They are not upfront with you in regards to who will negotiate with them. They know that Discovercard and Walmart will not bend . Yet they tell you that they can. They also convince you to add their Lawyer group in case you have a court problem, I did, and after court representation I was right back at the beginning with Discover card, no help at all plus had to pay extra filing cast to go to court. card. They will tell you that can not negotiate with your creditors, but you can and you can withdraw them from your account. I am close to finishing the program, got a little money and asked if I could pay off the smaller of the two accounts left. Was told no, but i could pay the extra money into my standing account ( not sure if this is name)and the money would remain there until the near the end of my term and then only would it be used to pay off the remaining account. This goes for for any extra money you pay over your monthly payment Last but not least, since now I am close to the end I am being solicited to take out a loan to pay off the remainder by a sister company!! Why now. I just don't think they are upfront. that is all, ask the questions and take notes, or record. Ron

Satisfied for the most part. There is an account that has been paid off for several months, but still shows in process. It was paid off in three payments. I have contacted FDR 4-5 times to inquire why this account is not showing paid off. Each time I am told it is being escalated, but nothing changes. I'm not given any further information, but the account status does not change. Very frustrating not to see progress. The only thing that has changed is that it shows 2/2 payments made. Don't know why this was changed because I am certain THREE payments were made. I've stopped inquiring because I am given no information. Even have sensed an attitude when I try to get answers. It is not easy going thru this process and feel I am just a number with FDR rather than a person.

They can always answer my questions and are always willing to help. Though I don't think they do things very well. I think that they could pay some of the debt I have a little bit faster than what they are doing, but I don't understand how it all works. Right now it's still looking like I still have quite a lot of debt. I assumed that they would take care of the two major ones first, but I have not had anything paid or taken care of yet, so I'm a little bit nervous. I also don't know how much it's going to cost me. I don't think it's going to cost as much as the debt I have, but I'm still worried about it.

Anytime I had a question they were ready to answer and would walk me through the whole thing. They also made sure that I took my time to think before making a final decision on things. They always wanted to make sure that I knew what was happening and that I understood the situation. Everything that gets done is put up in the dashboard so I can look at it. They also send me messages when they need me to look at things there. There were a couple of times when I had to call them because I hadn't heard back from them in a while. I'm in the middle of things right now and I feel okay so far. I'm down to the end of my program but I'm a bit concerned about the last debt. It's taking longer than anticipated and I feel like they're not being aggressive enough with it. It's dragging and it's obvious. I totally trust them though.

To settle an account is super expensive in my eyes and the constant text messages when you skipped a payment are super annoying. Due to the high settlement costs I'm thinking about going somewhere else. The accounts are forever unpaid, and by the time you settle, the interest and late fees are going to the roof. Also every settlement needs to be reported to the IRS and will cost a fortune

Reply from Freedom Debt Relief

Hello Daniela, thank you for your feedback. We are the leading debt settlement company in the country and are actively finding ways to improve the experience of our clients. Keep in mind that our settlement fees are bigger savings than having to pay your creditors the full 100% of the debt owed + interest % + any additional fees they charge. Yes, your creditor may have presented a lower settlement amount, but that is just to pull you back in so they could hit you with having to pay the full balance. Our settlements are secure and offer you a reduction in your debt that will lead you to become financially free. We understand constant alerts regarding missed payments can be annoying but we work very hard to have active communication with our clients to ensure they're fully informed of any impacts to their program. My debts were resolved but not without fear. Twice having been served was frightening. The first time by a constable , the second by the sheriffs office. The first time was extremely confusing and I walked into a courtroom thinking it was solved. The judge called me because I was a no-show out of ignorance. When I showed up at the courtroom I told my story and explained what I was doing, the lawyer representing the creditor tried to get around the negotiations! The second time I was angry !

Up until now they were great, very pleased. Our last account has drug on forever. I feel now the longer it takes the more money they will get out of us. I've had issues with communications. They don't call you back when they say they're going to call you back. I'm having issues with some of the representatives doing one thing and refer on another and nobody was working on the same page. It's a little irritating to deal with them. They've solved a couple of my debts already. But it seems like they're kind of lax about getting to my creditors and talking to them on my behalf so I had several issues with that.

There is NO assistance on how to contact 2 settled accounts which have not sent out 1099-C. My requests receive the same "canned response" with the add on of contact IRS. All we need to complete our 2019 taxes is a way to contact these accounts. Surely they have a phone # which we are not privy to. Last year received one on 4/13 letter and form dated 01/31/2019 and envelope the type which did not get postmarked. HELP below reflects this issue with a boost for great service on all other matters

It has been my experience that you should try to pay more than what they budget you out in the beginning. I have had two (so far) debtors to sue me and want to take me to court. However with being said the lawyers they ask you to get in the beginning are hands on it! You just have to go through the humiliation of a constable showing up at your work. Thankfully the constable was nice and told me if it's too good to be true then it is.

I was doing OK until I was offered a consolidation loan that was denied. I do not like "no", especially when the loan was not my idea. Anyway, it should be understood that people use debt relief companies because of being overwhelmed with bills for a period of time and want to get adjusted. Saying "no" for the same reason (excess bills in relation to income) does not make sense to me. I contemplate dropping FDR and negotiating the bills myself.

We appreciate your honest review, Vikki. Our sister company, Consolidation Plus, is a great option for some, however, it may not be the best choice for everybody and we're very sorry to hear that you were denied for their loan offer. Sometimes I talk to excellent people from customer support and other times I get people that just give me the run around. Depending on which account I was working on, some kept me in touch really good and others danced around and it was an email or I was having to call them. The attorney they use is probably one of the worst attorneys I've ever dealt with.

The staff is very nice. They don't hesitate to answer any of my calls when I call or answer my questions. They email me all the time. They didn't tell me until after the fact that if you don't have enough funds then the companies that you're filing against take you to a magistrate and then you receive letter after letter because no one contacts you and tells you 'if you get a letter you go to contact us.' That's the only part that I didn't like.

They are hoping but they take too much commission on each credit card they close, I think 23.% is way too much. better if they take a monthly small amount until all accounts are paid then take balance of their commission. It has been almost 11 months on our account and only 3 have been paid off with over |$6000 or more that has been our account. Wont have any money in account to pay off the biggest accounts until June so not really please with this.

We appreciate your honest review, Alene. We're very sorry that you're dissatisfied with the way we process our fees, however, please keep in mind that because we abide by the Federal Trade Commission guidelines, Freedom Debt Relief will not accept a fee until we actually settle a debt. Additionally, if you compare our fees to the 100% debt + interest % + late fees + penalty fees, we offer a proven solution at an affordable monthly cost that can help you pay down your entire debt - principle, fees, interest and all. Also, you can accelerate your program by making additional deposits, please contact our client services team to learn more at (800) 655-6303 or email .

Everytime I've called in to ask a question, they've answered and explained everything in detail. They let us know what's going on with creditors and the companies they work with. I really like not having creditors call me, because Freedom handles all that. I'm very pleased with the service they provide, and everyone at the company is very nice and listen to your questions. If they don't know the answer to questions, they find someone who can help me. I have no complaints, they are a very trustworthy company.

They have created a structured plan where I only have to make payments to them instead of multiple places. I was a little disppointed in how long I had to let my accounts be in collections begore a settlement was reached. The people I owed money to were offering me much lower deals almost immediately compared to the amount of time it took to reach a settlement with FDR. Knowing what I know now I would do things differently.

They looked like my best option at the time. Their customer service is somewhere in between. I've had some good experiences and some bad experiences with them. They connected with me mostly through text messages. Some parts of the service have been satisfactory but some others haven't been that way. It all came down to the fees that I had to pay in the end. Still, it served its purpose so I feel good about going with them.

At the time they looked like the best option for me. I haven't run into a situation where I needed support from them yet. So far I just signed up with them and make my payments. They take care of the negotiations and I can check on the progress online. I'm glad I signed up, I needed to do something about my situation. I just wished I had thought a bit further about my actions because their fees are quite high.

We were in an unusual situation where we didn't know who could help us get out. We were facing bankruptcy so we tried Freedom Debt. It certainly helped me and my wife. It was something I didn't necessarily want to do, but it was unfortunately necessary. They helped us in a time of need with the banks and credit card companies. They are very expensive though, I was not made aware of that. If you're in a situation between a rock and a hard place, it's something I'd recommend.

It has been ok. The only bad experience was them telling me I had to pay an additional $230 a month for an additional account. I ask them to wait until January or it would hurt my budget badly. The man I talked to said ok. My very next payment was $1210 instead of $980. This increase is still hurting me.

So far they are negotiating for us. But at the same time we haven't gotten a straight answer since we started the program. My accountant and financial advisor have both told me now I am going to be hit with taxes on the money I supposedly saved by going into this program. I am very private and independent and made the decision to go this route to get down my debt. It was advertised in AARP so trusted it.
