Americor is a debt relief company based in Irvine, California. The company has resolved more than $3 billion of debt for over 450,000 clients. Its more than 1,000 employees provide debt consolidation and debt resolution (sometimes referred to as debt negotiation or debt settlement) services to borrowers overburdened with at least $7,500 of debt.

Like most debt relief companies, Americor works to negotiate down their clients’ unsecured debt, such as credit card debts, personal loan, and medical debt with their creditors. If you have significant secured debt, such as mortgage or car loan debt, a debt relief company is probably not going to be able to help you with those secured debts.

Americor offers a debt resolution program in which clients submit their debt information, consult with the company, and apply to enroll with Americor’s program. Once enrolled, an Americor client can get immediate financial relief with their monthly debt payments lowered by up to 40%. Additionally, Americor assigns each client to an expert debt negotiator who works to settle the client’s debts with their creditors, typically reducing the total debt owed to creditors by up to 50%.

Comprehensive Debt Services

Americor’s debt relief program helps with common creditors, banks, and delinquencies including, but not limited to, credit card debt, personal loans, medical debt, private student loans, and unsecured lines of credit (LOCs).

While the services outlined above are typically offered by most debt relief companies, Americor sets itself apart by also offering clients some of the fastest settlements in the industry along with additional client support with access to a 22,000+ online community of Americor clients and program graduates who help, support, and motivate each other and answer questions about the program and process as they work to become debt-free.

Simple Process

Americor offers a simple path to becoming debt-free. You can contact the company by phone or online via their website to receive a free consultation. You only need to answer a few simple questions about your debts, and if you qualify, you can get started immediately.

Americor provides you with a 100% personalized debt relief plan. And for those who wish to get started with Americor’s debt resolution program, it typically takes between 24-48 months for clients to complete the program and to be debt-free of all their debts they enrolled into their program.

After clients complete their program, they receive a certificate of completion and all of their enrolled creditors are fully paid off, and the client is debt-free.

No Upfront Fees

Like many other reputable debt relief companies, Americor doesn’t charge clients for its services until after it has received settlement offers from clients’ creditors and the clients have approved of those settlement offers.

Accreditations

Americor has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) with an A+ rating. Ratings range from A+ to F, with A+ being the best and F being the worst, and are based on factors like customer complaints, transparency, and responsiveness.

Americor Reviews

On BestCompany.com, 90 percent of Americor reviews are 4 or 5 stars. Satisfied Americor clients frequently highlight the following about their experience with the company:

  • Stress-free process
  • Ease of tracking progress through email notifications and the Americor app\
  • Courteous and knowledgeable company representatives — many Americor clients remark how the reps they worked with helped them feel calm and comfortable, in addition to answering their questions and concerns.

It is worth noting that Americor has a near perfect score among clients in the service category. This bodes well for those considering working with the company. One Americor review mentions that the company is "always there" and calling back. General consensus among Americor reviews is that the company excels in customer service.

However, some customers mention receiving notifications from creditors and bill collectors after starting service with Americor, which can cause stress or concern. However, results of debt relief service aren’t typically immediate, and receiving such notifications are not necessarily an indication that the service isn’t working.

The Bad

  • Limited Debt Relief Services

Limited Debt Relief Services

While some debt relief companies offer multiple kinds of services, Americor appears to offer only debt consolidation and debt settlement services, and not credit counseling or bankruptcy services. This limits what the company can do for you but could also mean that Americor is more specialized in debt consolidation and debt settlement than other companies that try to handle a wide variety of financial issues under one roof.

Americor Frequently Asked Questions

Will I owe taxes on the amount of debt that is forgiven through a successful negotiation?

Some creditors may issue a 1099c for the amount of debt forgiven over $600. If this occurs, you may be able to file for FInancial Hardship with IRS Form 982 with your income tax return to offset any tax liability. To learn more about the impact of cancelled debt and how to offset potential tax liability, read publication 4681 on the IRS website.

Will I be able to enroll all of my debts in Americor's program?

No. The program focuses on unsecured debt like credit cards, personal loans, medical debt, and personal student loans. Loans that are secured by collateral such as your home or an automobile do not qualify for Americor’s program.

Can I negotiate my own debts?

The short answer is yes. It is possible for you to contact your creditors directly and negotiate your own debts. However, Americor negotiators have years of experience and direct relationships with creditors and collection agencies. Unless you are a skilled negotiator and extremely knowledgeable about the credit and collection industry, you may not be able to negotiate agreements as favorable as the ones Americor negotiators may reach on your behalf.

Who is holding the funds I save each month?

By law, all debt resolution providers are required to use an independent third-party payment processor to hold consumer funds while the consumer is enrolled in a debt resolution program. After enrolling in Americor's debt resolution program, the company will assist you in setting up a FDIC-insured savings account that you control with a licensed, third-party payment processor who will hold your savings funds and distribute all negotiated payments to your creditors in a timely manner. You are the owner of this account and you control all of the funds deposited and debited from the account.

Does a debt resolution program help repair my credit once I have completed the program?

No. Americor is not a credit repair company, and it does not offer credit repair services. However, once a person progresses through their debt resolution program and settled accounts are paid off, they often see their credit score improve due to a lower debt to income ratio.

Does a debt resolution program affect my credit score?

If you do not make timely minimum payments each month, or if you allow your credit cards to go into a charge-off status after six months of no payment, your credit score can be negatively impacted. This is true whether you enroll in a debt resolution program or not. The sooner you are able to resolve your delinquent accounts or negotiate a repayment plan for less than you owe, the sooner negative items will begin to not be factored into your credit score and the sooner you will be able to begin to rebuild your credit.

How long does it take to complete a debt resolution program?

While each person’s situation is unique, and it is dependent on how much debt you enroll and how fast you can save, Americor clients are typically able to complete their program in 24 to 48 months.

How long does it take before I typically see results?

Americor clients typically get their first settlement offer within 3-6 months after enrolling in the program. However, some clients receive their first settlement offer within 30 days of making their first deposit into their dedicated FDIC-insured account.

Can Americor guarantee all of my debts will be successfully negotiated through its program?

Americor will not enroll a creditor that the company has not successfully negotiated with in the past. Part of the enrollment process is to determine which of your creditors Americor can and can not enroll. Americor has been successfully negotiating debts with most credit card companies since 2009 and has relationships with over 1,000 clients across the nation to assist their clients with their debts.

How are fees charged and paid in a debt resolution program?

Americor never charges a fee until it is able to successfully settle your accounts for less than what you owe. When Americor receives an offer from one of your creditors, it will submit a written agreement to you for your review and approval. Americor's fees are then paid on a prorated basis once the settlement payment is made.

Arianna McNeil was the first person I spoke with at Americor. I called with great apprehension even after doing an extensive comparative search on the internet. To begin, her phone presence was understanding, reassuring and patient. I am 81, have suffered a stroke and find myself unable to work as an artist any longer, She was at all times able to address my questions and waited patiently while doctors and nurses administered to my physical needs. It was a unique experience for her I am sure, which she handled with compassion and professionalism. In a world where personal contact via telephone is rare, Arianna is golden. As an initial contact person representing Americor...she is a keeper!

I had an outstanding experience with Christin Escaross. From the very beginning, she was professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely committed to helping me regain control of my finances. She took the time to explain every step of the process clearly, answered all my questions and provided all detailed information. Overall, I felt very safe during the duration of my phone call. She was very honest and transparent. I believed my concerns would get better with time as along as I follow through with this process.

This review is only based on my initial call to Americor and the Debt Consultant that I have spoken with. I will update my review once I finish the program or if need to stop. The Debt Consultant I worked with is Ayman Ibrahim. Ayman was personable, and seemed with just the first call understood how I was feeling and how I was struggling. He helped explain the program and has been punctual with our meetings and following up. Ayman is kind, empathetic, and is making a stressful situation so much easier to handle. Truly appreciate his professionalism and compassion throughout the process.

Patrick Sandoval was just the person, I needed, to help resolve my debt problem. I was enrolled in a program, with another company, and was not satisfied with their performance. When, I received your letter, I thought I would just call, and get some feedback. I am grateful to have been helped by Patrick. He took a lot of time, to get my account set up, explaining everything to me, as we went along. I feel very confident this is the best solution for me. Thank you Patrick, for making me feel you have my best interest at heart. I also spoke to Carlos, when setting up my portal. He was also knowledgeable, walked me through the process, explaining everything. A wonderful experience speaking to these two gentlemen.

At a point when I became very frustrated with this program and wrote a long email expressing my disappointment and displeasure, Linda took the time and had the patience to explain everything to me in a very clear and concise manner. Her explanation vis email gave me the assurance that I am on the right path to financial freedom and encouraged me not to give up but to trust the process, because it truly works. Thanks Linda.

I liked it at first. But…..I was told to “trust the process”. In this “process” I got sued twice. Sent in the legal docs, court dates came and went, I lost the case - of course - but then they garnished my wages. And STILL no one contacted the 2 creditors who now have judgements against me and are garnishing my wages. Once I finish paying off one, the next one kicks in. Yet, no one has contacted them IN 18 MONTHS. Not once. When I ask them about it they say “ well, there’s nothing we can do now”. So, I sent in the docs regarding the garnishments to have my monthly payments reduced - you know, since I’m now paying another $300 a month off my paycheck in addition to my monthly payment - and 2 months later, still nothing from Americor. No reduced payment. If you call, you’ll get someone who is basic call center trained who can’t tell you anything helpful. They know nothing of the process. In fact, one of the creditors who now has a judgment y against me for the full amount I owed, offered me 40% of the debt to settle. I asked the agent I spoke to and she said “in my experience we can do better than that”. Well, guess what? No one even contacted them so now I’m $2000 more in the hole. What do I pay them $100 a month for again? My credit has taken a 200 point hit - not the “70 or so” from the videos and literature they send in the pitch. I would have done better to file for bankruptcy and will have been well on my way to repairing my credit. Lenders seem to be more forgiving of bankruptcies rather than credit ratings like I have now. Plus, why am I paying them $100 a month to not even contact all my creditors?? I should’ve gone with a non-profit, but I fell for the sales pitch. So annoyed. Go with a non-profit, 100%!!

I like how they do all the leg work involving the settlement of accounts. I dislike how they take fees from you for every thing they do. And they try to force you to drag out the length of the program. I was told it would take approximately 3 years. They just got a settlement offer for final card and they want me to go another 2 years. That’s so unprofessional. The overall experience has been ok. They say that you have control over the dedicated account, that’s not true. They say in order to present a settlement offer, you have to have at least half of what the settlement amount is. Again, shouldn’t matter if you are trying to force people into being in the program longer so that you can collect more fees from them. The purpose of debt consolidation, is to relieve stress from the customer and allow them to get back on their feet sooner. You should look into charging a one time fee, for resolving all accounts, and make that fee dispersed over the length of time in program. Would I recommend Americor, I would suggest people to look at others as well. I made Americor my choice on a very short notice and was very unwavering in the beginning. I’m thankful for what they’d done for me, but don’t like being dragged down another 2 years.

I had 3 credit cards. Americor made agreements with the two right away but the third they waited and they kept telling me that I had to get more money in my account. But then I got a notice from that company. They were taking me to court. The first couple times I called Americor nobody said anything, but I finally called in desperation the week before I was supposed to go to court and the person I talked to that time put me on to a solution, she was great. I have a lot of stress in my life and I didn't need the stress of worrying about getting sued in court and it was taken care of and I'm happy with it. But I don't understand why when I called earlier when I first got the first notice about court, that the person I talked to at that time did not put me on to this. I'm happy with the settlement. I just don't understand why I had to go through all this stress, why nobody told me until the week before I had to go to court.

I really don't know exactly what to think yet as it has been a rather short time. I would like a bit more contact for example to say things like we have sent this communication to your creditors, listing the creditors and the specific communication and date sent. In addition I would like to see any return communication from the creditor, perhaps set up in a grid form. There really needs to be good documentation provided all along the way. And with each grid a reiteration of the steps to be taken by the client should they be contacted by a creditor. If this sort of documentation is being provided it isn't obvious enough for me to pick up on. I have a great many things going on at this time that are proving quite challenging for me so I hire others to do those things I can't. However it is still my responsibility to be sure those things are accomplished.

I told and told them I'm on disability and they wanted the payment to come out of a different account, to open up an account so I can just put that single payment in there. Since I'm on disability I do not have two banks account so they are not happy with me about that because I cannot have two bank account being on disability. Other than that I'm not getting any information other than "check your portal" and I look at my portal and update what needs to be updated and I never hear from them. They're nice to talk to but I'm not opening another account just to get in trouble with disabilities. I follow disability rules, not Americor rules, and she shouldn't have accepted me as I had to open up another checking account. She got kinda nasty with me so I canceled the whole thing.

I had a payment for one of the credit cards that they said that they will take care of I had a payment come out of my account. When I reached out to them to possibly get my payment date pushed back because I had already paid the credit card. They told me that I wouldn't be able to push it back I would have to double up on the payments and that is not something that I can afford. The reference representative was saying that she would have to cancel my application all together because I can't go more than thirty days without making a payment. So she gave me a number to call to cancel it. I called that number back in on the phone number that you could push it back without making me double up payments and it'll be taken care of beautifully, but it could mean two phone calls to get it done. It wasn't a convenient program for me.

They are very nice, very kind and they hear me out and I appreciate that. They created a program for me to pay my debt off in a longer time frame with lower interest. When I first set up my account they took a payment from me sooner than they were supposed to, so it really set me back financially as it made my account overdraft $41.00 and made my account negative. But they actually gave me the refund of the $41.00 because that's the payment my bank took and Americor gave it back. They have given me stress relief knowing that I won't have to pay out all the payments that I have been making that have been so stressful and overwhelming.

I haven't seen the funds released to me yet. When I first signed up for americor this guy was helping me and I had a question for him and he still hasn't responded a week and a half later. But the other times I called customer service I got a response within minutes. I recommend so far, I wouldn't recommend the customer service but I feel like what I'm paying every month is reasonable. Some of the processes are hard to understand and some of the tutorial should be made simpler. Because I didn't realize I put a deposit of money going towards some my monthly payment. There should be better customer service.

I haven't been in it long enough to see any results. My representative with Americor has been very good about helping me. It's been kind of a mixed experience. It was very easy to set up. I'm a little leery of when my unsecured debt providers start calling, 'cause I don't totally understand that. And they said it would take three to six months, but they've assured me that this is what happens. The paperwork said it is exactly what happens, so I'll just wait and see.

The people I talked to with this company were friendly and knowledgeable but honestly, I am a better fit for bankruptcy than this type of debt handling at 67 years old. That was NOT suggested to me as a possible solution, and I am truly glad I cancelled my contract with Americor before it went into effect after talking to another debt handling company.

Unfortunately for me, I contacted Americor right before Covid hit the world. But the explanation of what Americor really is was not clearly stated for my understanding. I just felt that in the end my process could have been completed way better. But finally I completed this process with 2 lawsuits I didn't want or need. Although they get your owing amount down at the time, those companies still come back to collect from you with a 1099 form.

As a company, the employees did a great job of taking care of me and my debt. Having said that, I would never have engaged them knowing what I know now. First, I was not expecting that I would be visited by the sheriff so many times, nor that I would have to go to court. Additionally, while Americor reached out to me when a settlement was reached, sometimes the communications were not clear or obvious. When reaching back for clarification, it often took time and energy on my part.

I didn't feel they were very helpful. They were very friendly and I know they tried but they really didn't have the answers I was looking for. Everything was going really good up until yesterday, and it's not really Americor's fault, it's kind of sort of a combination of my bank and Americor. My bank account got all screwed up and I'm really wondering how I'm going to get it fixed.

My debit relief was going great until I had a snag with Capital One. I could not include this creditor due to the fact that I made a payment in November 2021. I sent all the statements and was told in March 2022 that it was eliminated. I now have to go on a payment plan to pay them off. 5 months of interest has been added to this creditor. I am very upset about this.

Just be aware that if you use a service like this just be prepared to have your credit destroyed. There are a lot of fees, and the fees are more than I thought they would be. My credit is destroyed, it's under 600 now. I did not know that it would go that low because my credit score was good before this and it had this huge negative impact after using their services. They are responsive when you call them, they do answer the questions.

Every time I've called the customer service when I got through to them was really good, but a lot of times the wait times to talk to someone about a concern were either from five to ten minutes. With Americor, at first I was just very confused. because Americor I had contacted credit nine for a credit debt consolidation loan. It took me a bunch of research and then I talked to them three times until I understood. It was a good experience, a lot was resolved, we're rebuilding my credit and it really did relieve a lot of my financial pressures.

Not happy with the way they have and still are handling my Best Egg account. I feel this account could have been resolved way before I got a summons for court. Now I need to find an absorbent amount of money to try and negotiate with Best Egg before the court date to avoid a garnishment. So not right.

Do not hide anything. You have to talk clearly from the beginning because after I closed the deal with you guys, there were other fees that the advisor didn't mention to me at that time and that's not fair. You have to talk about all the fees involved in the transaction.

Everything seems to be ok. I wish there was more communication during this initial stage. I'm very nervous about all of the collection calls and not one about the start of negotiations on my accounts. I even sent in an extra payment to get things going faster.

I haven't been able to get return calls from the guy that set me up. He said, you know, call him anytime if I have any problems. And I've called him twice and I still haven't heard back from him. I had problems navigating the portal and getting new bills in there.

Still to early to really give a fair rating . Just getting started, but since far everyone seems to answer all my concerns. I believe that they will treat me right and get me back on track with my financial freedom. So far, so good.

They did alright on part of it, but they didn't listen to me and take my advice since it was my stuff. They just weren't very helpful and most people I talked to weren't very knowledgeable. They always had to send me to somebody else. It ended up being a circus show every time that I tried to call and ask questions.

Some people were very knowledgeable, you could tell they had a lot of experience and they were super helpful. And then others, while they wanted to be really helpful and they were, they were nice, they just weren't as trained as the others, I think.

The guy I talked to was really professional with that he had to say, and he could run the whole business. But when I got to talk to the second one, he gave me some negative input, about how they can't make me go to the court nowadays, all my bills and I just wasn't very pleased. I believe his name is Rick.

They didn't leave me with enough information on how it works. I thought they were gonna do a settlement now and just take money out of my account for it, but now they're taking money out of my account and I'm still paying to settle and I don't understand. I need to actually get out of it.

It's been okay. People have been willing to help at any given moment. I get a lot more phone calls than I think are necessary. I don't have a deep understanding as to how the how the company works I guess. They did explain it to me, but I don't really understand how that works. I think there could be more transparency.

Just started. So far things have gone smoothly. However, the 'welcome call' I was supposed to get was horrible. An automated system called me and when the person picked up, I had to go through the verification process. Then they asked why I called. That's a horrible process.

It was a much harder process than I originally thought it was going to be. They did keep in contact with me every month to let me know what was going on. In the end I still have the same if not more debt than I originally started with. I'm just paying someone else.

Don't be skeptical, always call and ask questions and make the right choice based on you and your needs. The rep I talked to was pretty easy to talk to and she communicated to let me know exactly how the program will go. Everything was smooth.

It's been two months that I've been in the program but I haven't heard from Americor if they are talking to my creditors, I'm a little scared and getting calls and emails, text messages that payments are late. I can't rate any higher until I can visually see that my agent is working on my creditors.

So far I'm not real happy because they quoted me a monthly price and it's a big difference compared to what it will actually be. I just got an email today saying I'm going to be paying about double what they told me on the phone when I signed up with them.

Not the worst and not the best. I wish the procedure of how things would work was laid out clearer. I wish our experience with them was a little better. They were not completely honest about the program. They should be more upfront about things.

Sometimes it was confusing talking to them and I think they should advertise better. I think they need more explanation as far as borrowing the money. I had no idea that I was going to be paying when I was going to pay so I kind of went ahead and paid the account out I didn't stay long. My experience has been ok.

Because I just started with this company and have not experienced anything except a lot of confusion with calls/emails/text needing information that had already been submitted. And the changing of contract I dropped one creditor, but not reflected on my account online.

I trusted them and later I found out that they weren't able to negotiate and take over my medical debt and it started a legal issue. They're always up to help but sometimes it's so hard to reach them. I have to leave them a text messages or a voicemail in the office. They actually helped me out but not completely.

I didn't understand the process of me having to do a lot of paperwork. Ask all the questions upfront because I have a question I need to ask. It would have been nice to be notified about how much I would need to do on my end.

Get as much detail and upfront information as possible before committing. I've gotten my questions answered quickly. It can be annoying to talk to a different representative each time you call in instead of having an assigned rep. Overall it's been good, not great, but I would use the word good.

With the initial call, you're very much encouraged to sign up for the program. Afterwards, I considered my options and decided not to go that route. And cancelling was extremely difficult. Multiple times, I had to call in and tell them I didn't want to do this

I feel y'all take to long to start your end of the agreement. I gave you everything in a timely manner and y'all have yet to make a payment to any of my accounts. Getting out of debt should not kill my credit the way it has. Wish I would have done it on my own

The beginning would have been a 5, but it felt like it deteriorated as time went on. We lost our main contact and we were just a number. That's not how it was signing up, so it was misleading to then no longer have a relationship and just be shuffled off to anyone.
