Americor is a debt relief company based in Irvine, California. The company has relieved more than $2 billion of debt. Its more than 400 employees provide debt settlement services to borrowers with at least $3,500 of debt.

Americor offers a debt settlement program in which clients submit their information, consult with the company, and apply for a program. Then, the company assigns you a negotiator who works to settle your debts with your creditor or creditors, typically for 55 to 65 percent of the original enrolled balance.

Like most debt relief companies, Americor works with unsecured debt such as credit card debt or sometimes personal loan debt. If you have significant secured debt, such as mortgage or car loan debt, a debt relief company is probably not going to be able to help you.

Comprehensive Debt Services

Americor’s debt relief program helps with common creditors, banks, and delinquencies including, but not limited to, credit card debt, payday loans, medical debt, private student loans, lines of credit (LOCs), and personal business debts.

While the services outlined above are typically offered by most debt relief companies, Americor sets itself apart by also offering debt relief programs for auto repossessions, mortgage debt, tax debt, and cellular debt.

Simple Process

Americor offers a simple path to debt relief. You submit how much debt you have and the company provides you with available debt relief options.

Then, the company helps you apply for the right debt relief plan, and if accepted, you are enrolled and assigned a negotiator that will work to settle your debts with your creditors. Typically, negotiators are able to settle for 50–60 percent of the original balance.

After you have completed the program, you work to pay off your remaining, lower debts, and ultimately achieve a debt-free life.

No Upfront Fees

Like many other reputable debt settlement companies, Americor doesn’t charge customers for its services until after it has settled their debt. This is a feature you should always look for in a debt relief company, and you shouldn't trust a company that does not offer a free consultation.

Accreditations

Americor has been certified by the American Fair Credit Council, the International Association of Professional Debt Arbitrators, and the Receivables Management Association.

The American Fair Credit Council is a consumer advocate group and the leading debt settlement company association. Certification by the American Fair Credit Council signifies adherence to a strict code of conduct, regulatory guidelines, and industry best practices. Additionally, all American Fair Credit Council members agree to not charge customers until after successfully negotiating their debt.

The International Association of Professional Debt Arbitrators’ certification communicates that a debt settlement company is committed to a high level of training and certification.

Companies that are certified by the Receivables Management Association must pass the association’s background check and adhere to industry best practices.

Americor Reviews

On BestCompany.com, 85 percent of Americor reviews are 4 or 5 stars. Satisfied customers frequently highlight the following about their experience with the company:

  • Stress-free process
  • Ease of tracking progress through email notifications and the Americor app
  • Courteous and knowledgeable company representatives — many customers remark how the reps they worked with helped them feel calm and comfortable, in addition to answering their questions and concerns.

It is worth noting that Americor has a near perfect score among clients in the service category. This bodes well for those considering working with the company. One Americor review mentions that the company is "always there" and calling back. General consensus among Americor reviews is that the company excels in customer service.

However, some customers mention receiving notifications from creditors and bill collectors after starting service with Americor, which can cause stress or concern. However, results of debt relief service aren’t typically immediate, and receiving such notifications are not necessarily an indication that your service isn’t working.

The Bad

  • Limited Services

Limited Services

While some debt relief companies offer multiple kinds of services, Americor appears to offer only debt settlement services, and not debt consolidation or credit counseling. This limits what the company can do for you but could also mean that Americor is more specialized in debt settlement than other companies that try to handle a variety of financial issues under one roof.

gavel

The Bottom Line

Americor offers debt settlement services in 34 states from its headquarters in Irvine, California.

The debt relief company has numerous certifications, which speak to the company’s commitment to ongoing training, adherence to industry best practices, and compliance with regulatory guidelines. For example, Americor’s certification through the American Fair Credit Council means the company does not charge for its services in advance. Thus, Americor customers can rest assured that they won’t be charged unless and until the company successfully settles their debt.

Americor primarily offers debt settlement services. However, additional services, such as debt consolidation or credit counseling, are available to those who have been enrolled in a debt relief program for some time.

To learn more about specific programs and pricing, it is best to contact Americor directly to find out whether the company is a good fit for you and your financial needs.

Americor Frequently Asked Questions

Will I owe taxes on the amount of debt that is forgiven through a successful negotiation?

Some creditors may issue a 1099c for the amount of debt forgiven over $600. If this occurs, you may be able to file form 982 with your income tax return to offset any tax liability. To learn more about the impact of cancelled debt and how to offset potential tax liability, read publication 4681 on the IRS website.

Will I be able to enroll all of my debts in Americor's program?

No. The program focuses on unsecured debt like credit cards, medical bills, and personal loans. Loans that are secured by collateral such as your home or an automobile do not qualify for our program.

Can I negotiate my own debts?

The short answer is yes. It is possible for you to contact your creditors directly and negotiate your own debts. However, Americor negotiators have years of experience and direct relationships with creditors and collection agencies. Unless you are a skilled negotiator and extremely knowledgeable about the credit and collection industry, you may not be able to negotiate agreements as favorable as the ones Americor negotiators may reach on your behalf.

Who is holding the funds I save each month?

By law, all debt resolution providers are required to use an independent third-party payment processor to hold consumer funds while the consumer is enrolled in a debt resolution program. After enrolling in Americor's debt resolution program, the company will assist you in setting up a savings account with a licensed, third-party payment processor who will hold your savings funds and distribute all negotiated payments to your creditors in a timely manner. You are the owner of this account and you control all of the funds deposited and debited from the account.

Does a debt resolution program help repair my credit once I have completed the program?

No. Americor is not a credit repair company, and it does not offer credit repair services. However, negative items remain on your credit report for up to 84 months (7 years), so the sooner you are able to resolve your debts, the sooner you will be able to rebuild your credit with new credit accounts and timely payments.

Does a debt resolution program affect my credit score?

If you do not make timely minimum payments each month, or if you allow your credit cards to go into a charge-off status after six months of no payment, your credit score will be negatively impacted. This is true whether you enroll in a debt resolution program or not. The sooner you are able to resolve your delinquent accounts or negotiate a repayment plan for less than you owe, the sooner negative items will begin to not be factored into your credit score and the sooner you will be able to begin to rebuild your credit.

How long does it take to complete a debt resolution program?

While each person’s situation is unique, and it is dependent on how much debt you enroll and how fast you can save, Americor clients are typically able to complete a debt resolution program in 24 to 48 months.

How long does it take before I typically see results?

Clients typically see their first account resolved in four to seven months.

Can Americor guarantee all of my debts will be successfully negotiated through its program?

Americor will not enroll a creditor that the company has not successfully negotiated with. Part of the enrollment process is to determine which of your creditors Americor can and can not enroll. Americor has been successful negotiating debts by most all credit card companies since 2009.

How are fees charged and paid in a debt resolution program?

Americor never charges a fee until it is able to successfully resolve one of your accounts. When the company receives an offer from one of your creditors, it will submit a written agreement to you for your review and approval. Americor's fees are then paid on a prorated basis once the settlement payment is made.

A Debt Consultant reach out to me quickly when I showed interest. Which was a good sign for me. After the Debt Consultant explained the program to me. I immediately became a client. The consultant, showed great enthusiasm in helping achieve my goal in becoming debt free, at first. However, after the initial phone call. The consultant showed little to no interest in contacting me when I had more questions. Which left me doubting my decision in becoming a client. I reached the decision to cancel my membership. And wanted to look elsewhere. When I called Americor to cancel. This very understanding and apologetic Client Relations Specialist was very sympathetic. Her name is Neyva Arias. Her sympathetic ear was genuine. Instead of trying to convince me stay. She asked me why I wanted to cancel? Since I was fairly new to the program. After explaining to her, how dissatisfied I felt with the Debt Consultant. Neyva asked if she could help me instead. Because of her genuine interest. I agreed in letting her help me. She then thoroughly explained the program. And listened to all of my concerns and questions. And made sure I was clear about what Americor was all about and how they could improve my financial situation. I did not feel rushed when speaking with Neyva. After a while I felt like I was talking to a friend. Before ending our call. I had a question that had come to mind. I had asked, “Does Americor have a budgeting tool that I could use?” She honestly did not know. Instead of ending our call with that. She immediately became determined in finding out the answer. Because it also caught her curiosity. She was 10 minutes into searching for an answer. Which had already been a long conversation between us by then. After a while she sadly concluded that Americor did not have a budget tool. But thought that it was something worth mentioning to be added. I cannot express enough how incredibly genuine and patient Neyva was in helping me. Not many people left in this world like her. If I could only speak with her throughout the program. I would be completely thrilled and confident that I made the right choice to stay with Americor. What an amazing and authentic woman. Thank you Neyva for insuring me that not all humanity is lost. You’re a rare gem!!

I got into trouble with about $20,000 in debt. Americorps was great in handling my case. They were very clear and what was going to happen. Now I'm debt free and I have my credit score back to $750. Very proud of that. Thank you Americorps. I give you five stars

I was a bit suspicious of debt reduction services, but the process is working. My credit has taken a bit of a hit as Americor arranges the settlements of my debts, but once they're paid off, my credit will rebound so I can build it correctly from scratch.

I am not happy with Americor I thought they were going to pay off my previous loan. And they didn’t I was making monthly payments to Americor For seven months and kept getting nasty notices from my previous lender with collection threats. my credit score went down from 800 to 600 they never paid a dime to my previous lender. They said they were still negotiating. I do not recommend them to anyone to get out of debt.

Yes, my debt was paid off earlier than it would have without them. We were told when we signed up that there was no need to worry about fees because they were included in the program estimates. What they don't tell you is that the amount of fees they charge are astronomical. The amount of money I saved in interest was paid in fees to Americor. They charge a fee for every deposit, every payment to a creditor and a huge fees is added every time a settlement is reached. They will also tell you that you will be eligible for a line of credit down the line to pay all creditors off, I tried a number of times to ask about this service and it took 2 years to get anyone to return my phone call. They also tell you that if you get sued in civil court there is no worry as they will take care of it. What they don't tell you is if you don't have enough in your trust account to settle the debt, you are on your own and the here is nothing they can do for you unless you make extra deposits.

I have only been with the company for approx 1 month. I can see how this will greatly benefit myself and my husband in the long run, however, in speaking with Mr M when we signed up, we have followed the instructions and used the verbiage with any creditors that have contacted us. I have emailed to let you know that we continue to receive calls from the same creditors and have not gotten a response. This is a bit concerning. I have also uploaded 7 of our 9 latest statements we have received in the mail. (Still waiting for the other 2). We made our first deposit right away, within 1 week, and nothing has been consolidated on your end. We did have 2 of the creditors that could have been chosen from to consolidate with just our first payment. Our second payment is coming up in under 1 one. How long will it take for you all to "hold" our money then decide to pay off some of this debt?

I was very disappointed with a situation I had this week. I having a medical procedure and my co-pay is $600, so I called to have my deposit date changed from August 26 to September 6th. So, apparently what I read about changing it 5 days before was not right. The Representative told me that I couldn't do that. She told me that if I changed it, I would have to make a double payment in the 6th because I was going to kiss my payment in August and I would also have to make a payment on September 26th also. So I would have to make 3 payments in the month of September. That's very deceiving to me.

When I was first introduced to the program I felt like there was good customer service at that time, but while being part of the program I felt like the customer service kind of declined from that. It feels like the availability wasn't as available as it seems to be when I was first contacted because there's a lot of times where I need to contact them but it was a weekend and I'm not able to contact them on the weekend and then anytime that they were available I had to work at that time so I was never really able to contact them at a convenient time for myself. One of the creditors did sue me and there is a whole issue that I had with them with Americor in particular. I had uploaded all these documents for them and it said that it was read but then when it came to it apparently there was one document in there that has a changed of court date and I had missed that because I was going through a bunch of things in my personal life and apparently Americor didn't bother to see that or let me know and they basically told me that it was all on me and they have the exact same date for my court date as well.

Things would've been much better off had I had dealt directly with the institutions. One of the institutions interest grew by more than $1000 because of the delay with no reduction with Americor's intervention. The fee charged - 29% - was either completely misunderstood or erroneously stated. Also there was a settlement offer of @$1400 from one of the institutions was not addressed a month prior to the final dealings and final cost for that debt was over $1800! I am most unhappy to put it kindly......

The intake was process was greatly flawed. When the customer service representative took my information, I made it very clear that I wanted my wife's information and debt consolidated with mine. The woman on the phone claimed she needed my information first, and then would collect my wife's data. She never did, and then tried to create a separate account so she would receive credit for two accounts. Unfortunately, my wife's debts were too minimal to qualify for the plan. That left her with her own debt, which isn't what I requested.

I have not received a call since they got my signature on their contract. My experience with Americor has been difficult because I can't get anyone to actually talk to me or call me when they say they're going to. Americor takes your money and then they don't get in touch with you so they don't really feel like your friend. They should be more communicative with their clients.

I was not aware that we would face actual legal action. We were served papers and went to court numerous times and the judge did not care that we were in a debt resolution program. My credit is the same and I'm done with the program. I would have rather figured out my debt on my own if i knew I'd have legal court cases on my record now. Not worth what they claim to fix.

Not forthcoming with information or guidance. It is effective but I don’t like how they do it. They need to make sure you don’t nee a loan. They were able to save me money but I was stuck with a higher loan payment as the only way to guarantee that I could pay it off. I think they should better explain how the program works. They did deliver what they said they would.

They could be more straight up with customers, that's all I can say. Get all the fine line to see what the company is all about. I was told that I had to contact the people myself through the portal or write letters to them to stop, that's not right that's not how it was explained. The gentleman said they would take care of everything, contacting everybody asked me if I had anything direct deposit they would stop all that and suddenly they called up and they said yeah I got one, is like oh you got to do that from our portal so I'm not too happy about that but we'll see how it goes.

Bait and switch. They advertise as a consolidation loan, you end up with a debt relief program. Was not exactly what I needed. I had good credit, and was making my payments. I needed a small loan in an attempt to improve the APR on my debt. That is not what I received. 2 stars because I did get a loan, however the terms are horrendous. The fees are hidden. The communication is not transparent. I was not really a good fit for this program. Now my credit is tanked, and I'm signed up for 36 payments. I will refinance, and pay this off immediately.

This company handled some of my debt even though they were supposed to handle everything then they closed my account and told me to take it up with the collectors . I appreciate them handling some of my debt but ultimately I would avoid using this company as it wil destroy your credit and cause you too waste money in the process.

There were some ridiculous fees I didn't even realize I was getting charged every time I was sending in the payment. Then they charge twenty five percent of the gross on every bill. Do it yourself you're better off and probably save fifty percent if you just take the time to. It wasn't cost effective.

My cards were on the table, there's were not. I didn't know anything about me sending letters to creditors, them not having the account numbers when they said they did, or having to upload statements which I don't have access to all of them.

I reached out to AmeriCore, after seeing an advertisement on Facebook. While struggling with my my finances, AmeriCore promised, within a short period of time, I can be debt free, and advised my credit scores would drop but after a year, I should see a major increase in my scores. Three of my four creditors were paid after 10 months (max debt of these three were approximately $1800). The biggest debt was $12000. After 7 months not paying this debt (AmeriCore advised not to converse with any debtors), the creditor sent me a settlement request to me reducing amount owed to $4600. This was sent to AmeriCore, I called to make sure it was received by them, as it was, but they advised me I did not have enough money in my account to negotiate any terms. I asked if I need to respond to creditor, AmeriCore told me “not to respond, as AmeriCore will wait until it goes to collections or to the creditors’ lawyers, in which AmeriCore lawyers will try and negotiate then, maybe to even a lower amount”. Again, I was “advised to do nothing”, that AmeriCore has everything under control. Fast forward to 01/2024, the creditor hired a lawyer and is now suing me for full amount of $12000+. AmeriCore’s response? Sorry but their lawyers will only negotiate no lower than 75% of full amount, which is same amount owed to begin with. The settlement offer of $4600 is no longer in play. AmeriCore’s negotiators only apologized and said that their credit department has me approved me to finance the amount requested by the lawyers, and my only option is to accept, or go to court and pay settlement plus lawyer fees. I unfortunately had to accept, and once Credit 9 sent me my loan paperwork, they wound up financing over $13000 at 28% interest, paying twice the amount I was paying to the original creditor! I tried to speak to AmeriCore for help, seeing how I had an offer in September for $4600 but was told to wait by AmeriCore until it goes to collections. No help was offered, other than apologizing for their error for not accepting the settlement offered. Even though “not enough money was in my account”, I could have accepted the $4600 offer, made payment arrangements myself, and I would not be stuck in this predicament I am in now. Long story short? If you are under AmeriCores guidelines and then f you can do something on your own, don’t wait for them to help I am NOT happy with my full service with AmeriCore, only the original first three settlements. The biggest debt wound up making my financial hardship even worse. With all this said, I cannot, will not recommend AmeriCore to anyone that is in dire need of help. They take your money, but doesn’t help when needed. My facts in this case is verified and as always stated, every conversation is recorded!

The representative I spoke with for the first time and agreed to proceed with the program did not inform me of the possibility of being sued by the creditors. He talked a lot about how to handle creditor phone calls, but, not a mention of potential law suit. This is, essentially, not full disclosure, and complete misrepresentation of what I agreed to. I was sued by the last, and largest amount, creditor. Of course, I was extremely upset. I was not going to allow this suit to go to trial and have to pay a lawyer. I have never had legal problems in my life. In addition, the customer service was disappointing, to say the least. A huge lack of continuity having to speak with a different representative with each call. I chose to pursue a loan with Credit 9, which has been completed.

I still do not see the light of the tunnel! You guys have bred slow to secure the agreement arrangement with my creditors! Only one in three months! My fico score has dropped another 100 points since I came on board… Furthermore, you did not tell me you would deduct my payment immediately… so that put me in an overdraft situation for two months, before my auto payment cancellation went into effect! Additionally, all these creditors are offering me direct, deep reductions or zero interest to get my credit back on track. Please tell me again what we are doing here?? Maybe I should cancel my subscription!

The company reps were friendly, however, they are not totally honest with all options open to someone in heavy debt, barely employed, and elderly. I only found out from a totally disrelated company (after signing up that Americor) that Chapter 7 bankruptcy was actually the best option for by Americor as I was in the 3 day window where cancellations were allowed. Then I found out from another company that since I don't have any assets that aren't protected by bankruptcy law, that I probably don't even need to file bankruptcy as probably no company will sue me. So Americor did me a favor by telling me to stop paying on my debts, but I didn't need to pay Americor to negotiate debt for me, or even to file bankruptcy.

For now my rating is going to be low because none of my agreed upon debts have been paid at all. I've been making monthly payments for a few months now but I'm still getting harassing calls and letters in the mail demanding I make payments. I inquired about this over a month ago and was told to send in all written copies from creditors and debt collectors. Americor responded with something about how they've already made agreements with these companies but nothing else has happened. Still paying in, still getting calls and bills and I was recently notified that my credit score has dropped over 200 points. Starting to wonder if this is a scam.

They will promise great things, and then spend the rest of your time with them saying no. If you live paycheck to paycheck don't be surprised if they message you asking for an additional 5k deposit next month. Lol. If i had 5k extra I wouldn't need their help. They promised a quick turnaround, its been 4 years and still counting for $30k in 5 accounts. They promised to try to get balances down to 50%, but it's been an average for me of 80%, meaning I paid more than I originally owed after their cut. And ps: some creditors never do 50%, so they won't bother trying for lower if it's within their typical range. They don't tell you what the percentages are, they won't bother starting negotiations until you have 80% of the money, and they require you to use their bank which charges big fees monthly and per payment. But allegedly they're not making any money off that. 🙄🙄 They handled the negotiations, but when I got sued they did nothing except send over a negotiation letter that the judge said wasn't adequate and dismissed in 10 seconds. Not that I had any assets to seize. Oh, and if you tell them to stop taking money out of your account they won't. When they get you a charge for an overdraft fee they won't fix it either. They'll offer to give you back your own money that you've already paid a fee to the./the bank to withdraw. And, if you call to change a payment better call 3 business days in advance because "it's already processing" is their favorite gabds-tiesld excuse.

Basically I don’t know if it is Americor or the person I originally dealt with but the information I was given at the start of the program was completely wrong. I was told I would receive letters to send to my creditors so I wouldn’t get calls at home, work, and my family bothered. This information was a complete lie. I was also told that I would only need to wait 6 months for the loan and it’s even in my emails yet I checked on this the other day because I’m at the 6 month mark and I was informed yet again my information is completely wrong and I need to wait a year. I really don’t understand how a company can conduct business like this, being transparent and honest is much better then feeding lies to get people to agree to use your company.
