LAST UPDATED: April 16th, 2024

The main focus of Synchrony Financial is establishing financial relationships between select sellers and buyers. After studying businesses with private label credit cards, like Walmart and Amazon, Synchrony Financial has been able to perfect their services and offerings, working with businesses and retailers to provide customers with hassle-free credit cards.

Instead of using Synchrony Financial's cards to purchase big ticket items, they are used to finance small purchases and future purchases, based on customer's available credit. Synchrony finances those purchases through Synchrony Bank, insured through the FDIC which means that your money is protected and that it is a safe bank.

Online Help

Synchrony Financial has a very helpful website. There is relevant information on it for everyone they work with. For businesses, Synchrony offers services through their business center, through which merchants can approve new applicants or access established accounts. The business center is also where credit limit increases are processed and payment options are selected. Using data from consumer purchasing patterns, merchants can develop sales that attract their customers.

For customers with personal accounts, Synchrony has a tool that allows you to compare Synchrony's annual percentage yield (APY) rates compared to dozens of other U.S. based banks. You can look at how much interest your money would make in a high-yield savings account, a money market account, or a certificate of deposit (CD). This tool allows you to see which rate will be the best according to the number of months you plan to have your money in the account.

For any of Synchrony Bank's accounts, you can manage your money directly from the Synchrony mobile app.

High Yield Savings Account

The high yield savings account from Synchrony Bank offers an interest rate of 2.15 percent APY no matter the balance in your account. This is one of the best interest rates among online savings accounts.

There is no minimum balance and no minimum deposit to start your account, and consumers can access their cash online, by phone, or via ATM. However, this account does not allow checking (writing checks).

Certificates of Deposit (CDs)

Certificates of deposit (CDs) with Synchrony Bank require a $2,000 minimum deposit. CD terms range from 3-60 months, and a three month CD will earn a 0.75 percent APY - the longer the CD (the more months), the higher the APY. A 60 month CD will earn 2.80 percent APY. After the minimum deposit of $2,000, your interest rate does not increase based on your deposit amount.

Synchrony Bank's CD rates are competitive compared to other banks, and individual retirement account (IRA) CDs are also available, an offering that is not true of all online banks.

Money Market Accounts

A money market account with Synchrony will earn a 1.20 percent APY. This account has no minimum balance, no minimum opening deposit, and no monthly service fees. It provides greater access to and flexibility with your money than Synchrony's savings accounts. With this account, you can write checks and make cash withdrawals online, by phone, or via ATM.

A money market account is a mix between a checking account and a savings account, and is a great option for when you want to earn interest on your cash, but don't want to tie up all your money. A retirement account option, an IRA Money Market Account is also available. Due to federal regulations, you can only make six withdrawals or transfers per month from a money market account.

The Bad

  • Issues with fraudulent activity
  • Inaccurate Statements
  • Customer service

Issues with Fraudulent Activity

Even though Synchrony Financial offers very attractive products to their customers, there is a pattern of reviews complaining about fraudulent activity.

Some customers report that they were overcharged interest in their credit card accounts. This usually happened to customers who were ending a purchase and had only one payment left to make. Upon making a payment or receiving a statement, they found that they were charged additional interest for the entire amount of the purchase or far more than what was owed.

Inaccurate Statements

Some customers have received inaccurate bank and credit card statements. This of course would result in an accusation that a customer owed more money than they actually did. One review stated that a phone call was received about a "missed payment". When the customer proved to them that he had made the payment, they sent him a letter in which they acknowledged the payment, but the ending balance on the letter did not show the deduction of that payment.

There have also been scenarios in which accounts were cancelled without permission or prior notice, especially when there had been a time period of inactivity. These accounts were not delinquent and the period of inactivity was not very long.

Customer Service

Synchrony Financial has many customer reviews that report poor customer service. Common complaints include incorrect addresses and phone numbers on accounts, inability or refusal to return phone calls on unresolved issues, locking customers out of their accounts, being put on hold for extensive periods of time, and no follow up after customer representative states there would be such, in order to reverse clerical errors.

If you pay off your account early, Synchrony Financial may not view this as being in good standing. Instead of receiving a statement to close out the account, several customers state that they were charged additional interest fees, late fees or amounts. The effected clients experienced adverse credit scores and reports. This terrible customer service makes online banking with Synchrony very difficult.

gavel

The Bottom Line

If you choose to work with Synchrony Bank, you can expect reliable online and mobile banking and great interest rates. Synchrony Bank has great interest rates on several of its accounts and multiple ways to withdraw money and contact customer service. However, it has a reputation for overcharging. Customers complain about having to deal with fraud charges. Ironically enough, Synchrony Bank customers who decide to pay their accounts of early might want to retain a lawyer, because instead of maintaining a good credit score, they in fact may be penalized with late fees and a hit to their credit score.

Synchrony Financial looks good on the surface, but is lacking in the areas where it really counts. Customer service is not reliable and many customers have reported difficulties getting in contact with and working with Synchrony's customer service representatives. I had a CD with Synchrony Bank for $60,000. I notified them of an address change early January prior to my CD maturing at the end of February. Two days ago, on the 11th of April, I was notified by my new bank that Synchrony had finally transferred the money; however, they had deducted $898.92, claiming I had withdrawn the money early! I have tried so many times I cannot count, to contact anyone at Synchrony Bank but it is impossible. All I get is a chatbot or someone who isn't even qualified to discuss banking. How does this continue to happen when it has been reported for months now, that other consumers have suffered similar losses. Because of their negligence, I lost the opportunity to invest nearly $62,500, at 5.75% interest. During the time they were “reviewing” my account to “potentially” release the funds, as though it were not mine- they claimed that I failed to contact them regarding the address change and then they put me under some kind of “investigation,” that not even my Wealth Management Bank could resolve. I wanted the money sent back to the bank from which it originated- so Wealth Management could then transfer it to another bank. They refused to discuss the reason why my bank- Northwest Bank, was not an option. My family has been banking there since 1988. Every time I confront Synchrony Bank about their negligence and gross mishandling of my account, they blame me because I failed to contact them. Classic projection and victim shaming is all I got from them. They refused to let me talk to a real banker that could help me- because they didn’t care. They kept me from three opportunities and then promptly took three months worth of interest away from me for no reason. I am at my wit's end. I'd rather put my money under a mattress than go through this again. You felt you were entitled to keep my money. I am mortified at their behavior. They kept telling me to document it in their app, and upload everything that was necessary- three different letters from other banks saying the address change was okay with them. They wouldn't transfer my money and they wouldn't write me a check either. They keep telling me to use the app and I swear to God they never read anything I sent them. Everyone else sent me a check either to my home or to my bank of origin within 24-36 hours. I have contacted everyone I can possibly contact about this issue. The way I have it figured out, if Clark Howard says Synchrony Bank is safe, then it should be. I just finished writing to the folks at the Clark Howard Show, to see if they will let me tell my story on the air.

Worse banking experience ever. They suspected my Verizon Visa card before due date. I couldn’t pay and they put a surcharge/ penalty. Never paid late. A fraud way of making money by this bank. They send me letter to verify credit history saying “To apply for a credit card”, when I have been customer since 2019. They want to lower credit history of the customer. Be very careful of doing business with this bank. Merchants should close there account with them like Walmart already did. Zero star Bank.

They lower your credit limit without warning to below your balance to hope you don't notice to be able to charge you fees. They also tell you they check your credit to adjust your limit based on BS factors. My credit has been better since opening my PayPal credit through them, but lowered it by half saying my score went down. The only time it's been down is due to them lowering my credit limit and raising my credit utilization. They are horrible. Queue the BS copy-paste reply.

Where do I start with Synchrony Bank. I first used them for care credit in which they refused to honor the interest free financing. Paid them off as fast as I could. Now they close a second card I had with them without even notifying me that the account was closed. In my state of they are going to close a consumer credit card the company is to provide at minimum 30 days notice in writing. However that never happens. By doing this they destroyed my credit. The cards are always being hacked. I had my PayPal card and Amazon card hacked multiple times. Each time they refuse to do anything and blame me for it. When it was on them. Now with them closing my card without notice I refuse to give them another cent. The DOJ needs to investigate Synchrony Bank and close the company down. If I could give them -50 stars I would. I would advise everyone to stay clear of them. The DOJ needs to investigate this fraudulent company and shut

Seems to be a very consistent concern with Synchrony Bank. I'm paying them off, making adequate payments, using some cards or not using others and then out of the blue I have a huge credit drop. They have at random cut my credit limit to $300, from $3000, stating a concern with credit inquiries. Then again, out of the blue, cut another card from $3000 to $2,250, no explanation. Card is being used correctly and paid off. They have destroyed my credit and one of the reasons they state for lowering credit limit, my credit score, that they lowered due to a sudden decrease. They have a monopoly on stores, but they are shady, scam artist and what they are doing needs to be looked into as fraudulent and illegal.

I would like start with saying this, if I knew this credit card company operate with poor standard and practices, I never would have sign up with them for the guitar center credit card. I sign up for the card to buy equipment for my local church. I had the card for over 1 year and half. Use it made purchase and paid card off not a problem. After that I used the card again an I noticed after the 3rd set of purchases my credit limit was decreased. A was sent a email that they are decreasing my credit limit. It didn’t make sense, because I was paying on it and using it and never had a late. Then yesterday was the last draw! I’m at work, I check my email, a saw I have a letter from this company(Synchrony financial) saying they made a decision to close the account. Now I can see if you are late all the time or don’t pay. I believe that is warranted of account closing. But if you make all you payments on time and this month made a double payment to pay it off and you close my account and I have credit and not behind that’s unethical and bad business practice. I have sent a letter, to attorney general office, bbb and complaint board. An after reading comment I will share my experience with my followers on social media to warn people how this company treat people.

I have several accounts with Synchrony Bank. Last month they lowered my credit limits across all accounts to where the balance was. I have NEVER missed a payment, Doing this screwed me over on my credit score, it dropped pretty drastically because my available credit to debt ratio dropped. With all the accounts, they dropped my available credit down about $5k. How I hate them... I worked so hard to bring my score up - always paying on time, always paying more than the minimum. Now my goal is to pay them all off and never do business with them again! And then a loan I have with Ally got transferred (or bought) by these fools. And for the record, Synchrony... your reasons are bull... I don't have a home loan BUT I own a home - so what's your problem?

Persistent Dreams

Had some plumbing work financed through the Synchrony Bank HomeCare card. Never again! Was waiting for my first statement to make my first payment. In that time, the balance was added to my account, pulled off as if I made a payment for the whole thing, added back, and pulled off again, ON THEIR END. It was only fixed because I called them to fix it. It appeared fixed so I set up a payment through my bank. Payment goes out, I check the SB website, it says my account is closed. They tell me it's because my first two payments (the ones I never made) were rejected. Then they lied and told me they informed me the day before I sent my actual payment. Now I'm waiting to see where my actual payment ends up so I can dispute it if necessary. Read the reviews. Stay as far away from this "bank" as you can. They are either a scan or totally incompetent.

HORRIBLE bank! I (had) a 785 credit score with no payment issues with this bank or anyone else. I was in really good shape. Out of no where, they closed all of my accounts stating I was a payment risk??? I have no idea where this came from? there is NOTHING to warrant this! Icing on the cake, I had monthly payments given to a charity taken from my credit card with them which they closed. I had to receive a letter from the charity stating they were unable to obtain payment.....there was NO reason for this....... please read the numerous reviews with my same complaint. I understand taking steps to ensure the safety of the borrows and the bank, but they are way out of line

The rep said no purchases for over 12 months!!?? I told her the least they should do is notify a good customers a purchase is needed. No she said we don't do that but you can reapply. Like others, I had accounts with Synchrony, then got snail mail about their concern about paying my accounts, even though I haven't missed a payment. They pulled the same stunt about 2 or 3 years ago. So, I've gone through this twice with them. So, from my perspective, if I could, I wouldn't give them a star at all. I will never EVER do business with them again. I will not have a savings account with, nothing at all. Their call centers are never in the USA, their foreign csrs know nothing, it's just simply too much.

Awful experience with Synchrony. Had the card for a couple years with basically no usage. I applied for it with Verizon and it allowed me to get a discount at the time for some promo. Eventually they told us we had to have auto pay on the Verizon account through the credit card to get the autopay discount. So I swapped my auto pay over and had my auto pay set up through my bank for the card. After 1 failed payment for who knows what since they wouldn't give me the information, they closed the account with no notification that the payment had failed.

Our payment on our loan was due on the 5th of the month. Due to a change in our payroll, we chose to pay ahead at the end of January, so we would not have any chance of being late when our next check came in February. These crooks are now telling us that we own them a 30 dollar late fee. Apparently by making a payment before the statement was generated, they did not consider this our normal payment and therefore they claim that our February payment was not made on time. They did this even though we are multiple months ahead on our payments. This is ludicrous!!! I’m very disappointed that I could not give them less than one star for the review!

I seldom give poor reviews because the world has far too many critics. However, your phone system/ communication lines are sub par. The fraud team flagged our card due to a high risk transaction at Walmart. I appreciated the concern at first, but the card has not worked properly since this date. We have called 4 times to have the "card turned back on" only to have it declined for our normal pattern of spending. Moreover, your customer service team has poor communication with transferring back and forth and is unable to help with basic transactions. We have given forgiveness 4 times in the past month...with no results of fixing the problem or any sort of compensation. I am embarrassed for this company.

I put all 1’s and for the NPS question at the bottom I put 0. Then it tells me I 80% finished the review. After looking back I didn’t omit anything so I decided to test and changed my NPS question to a 10 and then they say I filled out the survey 100%. I am submitting this scam review process to the better business bureau and the NPS team for forced hi scores

If I could leave zero stars I would. If you care ANYTHING about improving your credit score, stay AWAY from Synchrony Bank. They are infamous for closing accounts w/o notice. They've done this to me twice on accounts with long history that I have paid on time. They're justification was that they found something on my credit report that led them to (not simply reduce my limit) but go straight to closure. However, my credit status hasn't changed. Please do not support this bank and their borderline criminal behavior. Its companies like this that keep people from progressing.

I would give a zero if I could. DO NOT use any card from them. Thanks to them my credit score has went down over a 100 points. First they cancelled my long standing card, then lowered my Amazon account down to 300 when it was 1500. Then they lowered my Verizon card from 2500 down to 300. Now since they lowered it I still had like 25 available credit. For whatever reason they are now saying that I am over the credit amount. I just paid over a 100 on it and so shouldn’t be no where close to being over. I have NEVER had a late payment on any of my cards. I have paid all of them 2 weeks or so before the due date and over the amount that was owed. I’m so over them and would not recommend them to anyone. I worked so hard to get my credit up just for them to ruin it. I’m literally in tears.

I just had a letter read to me by a customer service lady, because I never got the email, she read it to me from her side. I started with a 1,200 limit at Belk and I've Never ever got my balance up that high and Always pay early and over the payment amount. Thats one card I did love at one time. I checked my monthly payment due ,as always, to find out that I went from 1,200 to 720 limit which lowered my score because it looked like I maxed out my card. Never ever mazed and paid over amount, I looked today to write my bills in my bill book and because I had an amount available they lowered my limit $20 below my available. So lowered my credit score Again. If you get it to 30 used on card they will mess you up and lower your limit. I've always made this card a priority and they are horrible at taking care of Good customers, predators are what synchrony is, can't wait to pat it off and be done with these pathetic people. I am so saddened that our banking system allows such a company to operate such misleading and deceptive trade practices as this organization. I signed up for a two year payment plan in 2021. As soon as I received my first statement, I quickly calculated that they were specifying a payment amount that was to set me up to not pay it off on time. After GREAT resistance I finally got the rep to change the amount to be auto deducted such that I would pay it off in time and avoid any and all interest charges. Upon the expiration date of the promotion, somehow they had added additional monies owed and passed on a doozie of an interest charge. They are unable to explain how that happened. Note that I have contacted them now four times tallying at least seven hours of explaining to each representative their error. Each and every time, they had no notes on the prior conversation, continued to deny that I ever filed a complaint. Eventually they agree they saw I had contacted them and then begin again the standard script evading any note of customer service and/or resolution. I even received emails stating I had messages in my account only to go there and discover no such messages. Their idea of customer service is to hide, deny, hide then deny. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES enter into any agreement with this company. They are designed to set you up and then run for the hills. How can this company be allowed to operate? They are a disgrace to business.

I have a care credit card through synchrony bank and am enrolled in auto pay. I had to change my account numbers because of some fraudulent activity on my bank account. I changed everything on my auto pay with synchrony and they still screwed it up. It showed I had made my payment on time and then a week later I look and see it's past due. I've never made a late payment on anything in my life and these incompetent fools can't get it right. So now I'm stuck with a late payment on my credit report because they have no idea what they are doing. Unbelievable how anyone can be so incompetent. All they do is answer a phone and can't even get that right.

Outdated a/o basic algorithms lead to customer service omissions. For example it's auto-withdrawal malfunctions, and the customer service staff on the initial phone or chat intake aren't trained or equipped to address it. So the bank will count it against you even though it's a bank issue. The year 2023 and I had to make manual payments. If you need the credit grab it, but if you're not pressed there are better banks.

I have a big complaint with Synchrony. After paying off a Crate & Barrel bill I got another charge for $1399 and NO ONE at the bank can tell me what it is for. So the inaccurate billing is one issue and the HORRIBLE customer service is another.

I would leave Zero. I agreed to sign up for a trade credit card with Crate and Barrel. Was the wrong thing to do. Incorrect statements and when I made Schedule Payments they didn't work on the date schedule! (Too Many Times!). Stay away....Far Away unless you want a head ache.

ZERO stars. This place has worked me over too many times and they don't care. They allowed a business to charge me 3x over and made my life a living hell. Not to mention the fact they are pushing for APR over 40%! Stay away from Synchrony and the creeps making money scamming the people.

If it would allow zero stars I would . DO NOT OPEN A CREDIT CARD WITH THIS COMPANY . I place in all caps for emphasis , They are the worst will closed your account even with you paying on time they lower your limit and mess up your credit. Avoid them they should be shut down and put out of business. Their customer service is mediocre and they are so out of touch , Avoid them and look elsewhere,

These people are crooks!! The agreement states they will charge 26.99% interest, they charged 39.98%. Nowhere in the agreement does it say that they were going to take the amount they should charge and multiply it by 365(days of the year) then divide that number and then multiply that number my the number of months for the promotional period to overcharge by nearly $1400. I do believe this is illegal and this company should be fined and shut down. I will be seeking legal action against them. This is unacceptable!!!

Do not use their banking, nor get a loan through them. The customer service is horrible, also not the best people to talk to and are not helpful at all. Plus I've been trying to pay off a loan that I did with them for dental work and have not once been able to pay on time due to the fact their auto-pay doesn't work and have been charged 200 dollars so far for something that wasn't my fault to begin. Use a different bank if you can, it will safe a lot of hardack

Run! Run far away from using this bank. We purchased furniture almost 6 months go with Mor and they put us in the wrong payment plan. It has been a literal nightmare. Even after we showed them that we were supposed to be in a longer agreement, it has been 3 months and this still hasn't been resolved and now I have a notice on my credit that I'm 30 days past even though we have made the monthly payment we were first originally told.

The worst bank I've ever had credit with. Closes your account for no reason when your bill is paid on time. Decreases your credit limits when you've been paying on time. They make no sense, once my accounts are paid in full I will be closing them all even if it hurts my credit and will never apply for credit or bank with them ever again in my life. Id give this company negative 5 stars if I could. Please bank/credit with anyone else but them.

Had this card for YEARS (4 to be exact)! Paid off my balance and haven't had one on it for at least 2 years. Just recently, in the last 6 months, I went through a financial hardship. I was then surprised to find an email from Synchrony Bank telling me that they canceled my credit card. Now again, I had NO BALANCE on this card, and have kept a great relationship with then, so imagine my shock upon receiving such an email. My credit score suffers further, I lose my available credit on that card, and I feel betrayed and hurt by this company to boot! I could see it if I was late on payments, or if I had an outstanding balance, but I was always on time for payments, and I NEVER kept a balance on this card. These people are scumbags. DO NOT do business with them. They won't hesitate to kick you while you're down.

Terrible customer service!! I paid off my account and had a zero balance, and 6 weeks later I had a balance again, and didn't use the card. The account was messed up for 2 months when suddenly my closed account through Synchrony from years ago also had a balance!! It was a closed account and suddenly showed a balance? I called 4 separate times in an attempt to straighten it up. When I called yesterday, I asked to speak to a supervisor and she got on the phone in a mood. She told me that my bank account was closed. It has never been closed. I have had the account for years. I kept trying to explain my issue and she kept saying over and over that my bank account was closed. Not true. I ended up closing the account for my JC Penney card due to the treatment. I have been a long time customer, I don't miss payments and I was treated horribly by Heather a so called supervisor from the call center. She was rude, and she didn't listen to the problem. Horrible customer service! Train your people!! I am contacting JC Penney to let them know how I was treated by Synchrony and why I dropped my JCPenney card. Also, I am reaching out to the State Attorney General to file a BBB complaint. I encourage others to do the same. I am disappointed in the way I was treated for a series of missteps on their end. Shameful.

This is a very low class lender bank. I have 3 credit cards through them two have not been used they are less than a year old. So they closed those two. I have one through this bank now that I have and making payments on it and they sent me an email saying that it was closed. So I get in touch with them and they say that the account with this card is good. So is it closed or is it opened. Once this particular account is paid I will never ever go through this bank lender again. Their customer service support is crappy. I have read numerous very bad reviews and seen lawsuits against this bank lender. My advice is if your applying for a credit card DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND MAKE SURE ITS NOT THIS PARTICULAR LENDER.

Their retail credit cards with promotional purchases are predatory and non at all transparent. I followed all of the prompts for auto-pay and paperless billing, set my payment well above the minimums and in-line with paying off the promotions in time and they misallocated payments to other purchases causing the promotional purchase to not be paid on time, therefore tacking on HUGE deferred interest fees. I didn't receive any notifications about the fees and I have tried calling so many times to escalate the issue but get forwarded to an "account manager" who is a third party call center that just repeats "there's nothing we can do about it."

I’ve paid three of my accounts off only to find out they closed two of them and dropped the other one from $4000 to $100. The interest is awful my care credit was closed due to the company not pulling the funds out of my account in a timely manner, and due to them not pulling the payment the other payments on my account had been taking out. But I was the one that was embarrassed inside Reeds jewelry store due to Synchrony closing an account that has been paid in full since May of 2023 makes no since to close account that were paid in full. I wouldn’t recommend this company to anyone. These are accounts I had for multiple years with a good history of payments before they were paid in full

They keep reducing my credit limit just because I made one time late payment for 2 days. I immediately paid balance and close this ridiculous account.
