DIRECTV got its start in 1990 and has since grown into a successful Fortune 100 company. The company offers over 190 full-time HD channels as well as high-speed internet and a streaming service. In a side-by-side comparison with other digital satellite providers, it holds up very well.

In June 2015, AT&T officially acquired DIRECTV, creating one of the largest television and communications companies in the world. The projections for this merger are positive for DIRECTV customers, giving them bundling opportunities on internet and phone service not available before.

DIRECTV is a digital satellite entertainment service provider that offers homeowners and businesses more than 250 channels throughout all 50 states.

Genie® HD DVR and Direct Remote

In decades past, TV plans came with one remote for one television. Now any iPhone mobile device can act as a DIRECTV remote, and viewers can watch up to four different shows in four different rooms at any given time. Android devices can be used as well. but only if they are running on at least an IOS 6.0.

The Genie HD can be used to record shows. Better yet, those shows can be recorded in HD, meaning customers can fully enjoy them without viewing them live.

The ability to view different TV channels in multiple rooms has many customers asking, "How much extra equipment will I need?" With DIRECTV, all you'll need is a Genie Mini in each additional room. Also, if you have a Samsung or Sony Direct Ready TV, you don't need any external devices to run multiple TVs through the network.

With each of the plans listed above, customers will receive a set-top box in the mail that allows them to do their own installation. Instructions for setting up your DIRECTV set-top box are sent with the package and customer support is also available.

Channel Lineup and Selection

DIRECTV has plenty of channels to offer. The TV provider has over 200 live HD channels and a plethora of movie channels. Customers can enjoy HD and 4K programming with each of its channel packages; however, you'll need to purchase a higher tier plan or upgrade to gain access to a larger variety of HD channels and premium channel options. You'll also need a 4K TV to access the 4K channels.

DIRECTV's PREMIER package gives consumers access to premium channels. If you're obsessed with HBO's Game of Thrones or if you can't miss an episode of Showtime's Billions, then this DIRECTV package is perfect for you.

Sports fans love DIRECTV because it is the exclusive TV provider for the NFL Sunday Ticket. This sports package lets consumers watch live, HD, out-of-market games every Sunday. This plan particularly appeals to football fans, but if you're a fan of another major sport, no need to panic — DIRECTV still has you covered. You can select from any of these sports packs:

  • DIRECTV SPORTS PACK: CBS Sports, ESPN Classic, Outdoor Channel, etc.
  • MLB EXTRA INNINGS®: MLB Network, MLB Network Strike Zone
  • MLS DIRECT KICK
  • NBA LEAGUE PASS

Every DIRECTV channel pack has plenty of options for even the pickiest entertainment buffs. There is plenty of original content, classic movies, and sports channels for everyone. Just be sure to pick a channel lineup that satisfies your entertainment needs.

DIRECTV App

The DIRECTV App lets subscribers stream live news, sports, along with their favorite shows and movies. The app gives customers flexibility as they can decide when and where they want to watch. Users can watch live, On Demand, or download their DVR recordings to their device, to view it anywhere. The DIRECTV app comes at no extra cost, can stream on up to 5 screens at once, and uses no data when customers have AT&T wireless.

The DIRECTV App can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.

Save Money By Bundling

When bundling your DIRECTV Satellite TV services with other services (phone and internet service), you can save a decent amount of money. The AT&T internet plan costs $50 per month and the most basic DIRECTV package costs $35 per month. The DIRECTV and AT&T Internet bundle costs $75 per month, saving customers $10 a month. What customers get is over 155 channels, internet speeds up to 100 Mbps, over 99 percent reliability, and the professional installation fee waived — a $99 value. Customers can even sign up for a 3-month preview of HBO®, SHOWTIME®, STARZ®, and Cinemax® at no extra charge.

Possible Monthly Fees

Before signing up with DIRECTV, it is essential to review the terms and conditions for each service to be sure of any additional fees or taxes. Too often, customers sign up and don't find out the terms until it's too late. Here are some possible fees a DIRECTV customer might run into:

Activation and Installation

For each of the DIRECTV packages, there is a $19.95 activation fee

While installing DIRECTV, the technician may need to make changes to a telephone line or provide extra equipment, etc. and a custom work fee may be applied. The technician should prepare a Custom Work Rate sheet to explain what was needed and the cost.

However, customers should also be aware that there is a non-activation fee. DIRECTV will charge $150 per receiver if it is not activated within 30 days of installation.

Equipment

There is an Equipment Lease Fee. The fee for the first receiver is waived; after that, each additional receiver costs $5 per month

At the end of their agreement, customers should return their equipment to avoid DIRECTV's Unreturned Equipment Fee, which can range from $55-$470 per receiver

Cancellation and Deactivation:

Customers who don't fulfill their Programming Agreements may be charged a pro-rated fee of up to $480.

There is a disclaimer at the bottom of DIRECTV's site that states there is an "early termination fee" or cancellation fee of $20 per month, for each month remaining on the TV agreement.

If a customer deactivates their service or if DIRECTV deactivates the service, there may be a charge of $15. This charge is made apart from the termination fee.

Extra Fees:

DVR Service Fee: Choosing a DVR or HD DVR receiver will automatically enroll customers in a DVR service. The cost is $6 per month, no matter how many DVR or HD DVR receivers they've selected.

HD Access Fee: For an additional $10 per month customers can receive HD channels

Late Fees: If a customer misses their monthly bill and fails to pay within the grace period, DIRECTV will charge $5 or the maximum amount permitted by law.

Price Increases

DIRECTV is known for locking customers into great promotional packages for the first year of their contract; however, once the first year of the contract is complete, year two can bring a substantial increase in monthly programming prices. While this is stated in the contract, it comes as an unwelcome surprise to many customers. A number of DIRECTV reviews mention these price hikes as one of the top frustrations with this satellite tv service. If this is a deal breaker for you, there are other service providers that offer set pricing for the length of your contract.

Signal Relies on the Weather

DIRECTV is satellite-based and is subject to all the disadvantages that come with a satellite dish: reception is at the mercy of weather conditions. Heavy storms are likely to affect the satellite connection. Weather does not affect the quality and availability of cable tv or fiber optic programming to the same extent as satellite TV service. Be prepared to deal with spotty live tv connections  as connections to local channels during considerably adverse weather.

gavel

The Bottom Line

There are plenty of reasons to consider signing up with DIRECTV.

DIRECTV offers an incredible assortment of specialty and local channels, and its initial promotional packages are hard to beat. However, be aware that after your one or two year contract is up, there will be a price hike; while this isn't unusual in the industry, this catches many customers off guard. Customer reviews did not take this lightly.

DIRECTV is the exclusive provider for the NFL Sunday Ticket. This is great for football fans who want to watch those out-of-market games, but if football isn't your game, then there are plenty of other sports packages to select from. You'll also have access to plenty of channels, so you can pick the perfect TV package. These perks make DIRECTV hard competition for a number of Satellite and Cable TV providers.

If you're looking for a TV provider that provides a plethora of HD channels, amazing sports packages, and gives you access to exclusive content, then it might be worth looking into DIRECTV.

Do not get me wrong by the star rating I do like my direct tv. The issues I have is that they keep going up on the billing to there long time customers. There are ads where you can get the same service I have for a third of the cost being a new member. One would think you would treat your existing customers better to keep them with you. As much as I love them and have been with them for 20 years I am looking to get out.

DIRECTV has been the trusted TV service in my family for over 10+ years now. Directv has had its faults in the past including having really bad service connection during a storm; whether it is a small drizzle or a big thunderstorm, the services and internet connection is automatically down. Another thing about DirecTV is that when it comes to DVR and recording shows/movies, there is a limit as to how many services can be recorded at once and it also limits how many people can stream at one time; for example if my mom and I wanted to watch a recording on two different tvs, my sister and brother would have to watch DVR and not regular tv because two people are already using it.

We were charged $135 for equipment we continued to use when we decided to remain with Direct TV. It has just taken me 32 minutes on the phone with two representatives to have this charge removed. We have had Direct TV for a number of years. In June 2019 it was going to nearly double in price. We called to see if we could get a better deal, although was refused flatly. Therefore we cancelled and was told we would receive a box to return the equipment. When we received the box, it had a leaflet stating "Do not leave us" and was offering the basic package for $35! After calling and finding out we could have the same package as our original one for $45, we chose to remain. We were told to keep our equipment and program in Direct TV. Having just received my bill, that has charged me $135 for non return of equipment and spending over 30 minutes rectifying this, I am annoyed at having to spend this time on something that should not have happened in the first place. Surely if a mistake is made, it should not take this amount of time to look at my bill and see I still have Direct TV and check the serial number !

BOTH DIRECTTV AND DISH ARE OVERPRICED THOUGH during the second half of the contract. You're not getting any bargains. Direct is better by far than DISH, at least for me. That being said, I am now stuck with DISH because Direct would not honor the prices that I received in a mailer that I received. They didn't value the fact that I was an EXISTING CUSTOMER. The reduced rates were only offered to NEW CUSTOMERS. So I left and went to DISH, went through that contract, Then time came to make a change again. The only reason I went with DISH this time was because they offer SIRIUS XM with their service, otherwise I would have selected Direct. I had Direct during the 2009 great ice storm and as long as I have electricity, I had TV. With my DISH service, it goes out almost by spitting on the ground.

Our system was out for about 4 days and trying to do what a computer is telling you is ridiculous. Not every one has a computer and their tv in the same area. When did get a real person did all the things I was told or suggested. Finely they said it was the tv not the dish. Thanks to the very nice service man (Zane) when he arrived it was all the wiring from the dish to the receiver. He moved the dish to the roof of the house and redid all of the wiring. He was great at explaining every thing where an older adult could understand it. The tv picture is better than it has ever been. Just a heads up Directtv. you have a number of customers who are older and speaking to a real life person is more to their benefit than a machine. If you read this fine and much appreciated but if not I have it said any way.

I have been with Direct Tv for over ten years and believe they are getting too expensive and they don't give anything to customers that have a long history with them. I had to cut back on my services and that makes me mad. They don't take care of there long term customers. No breaks. You have to call to maybe get a pay channel for a couple of months. That's not keeping there customers happy. I am considering going with cable. I don't like losing my connection when it's stormy. Right now I am unhappy with Direct Tv. Paying a lot of money for watching tv? My bills have been around $80 for limited channels. That stinks. If they treated there long term customers with offers and good deals I would consider staying with them. Be aware. The fees are a rip off. Depending where you live. Give me a break.

Not one of the best experiences I’ve had. It brings too much in Puerto Rico for me to have the service and reliable manner. There was a time where in one month I only was able to use this service three times. I have to say the customer service was really involved put the technology behind. The service was not good enough for the needs of my family. It was also very hard to cancel since they would not take no for an answer

I’ve been in my house 10 years & decided to go back to DirectTv after leaving them 4 years ago. Now into the last few months of my contract, I’ll be leaving them again. I pay $150 for the lowest channel lineup, the lowest speed internet, & only one box for 1 tv. It’s not worth it for the channels I’m able to get & that I watch. I have 4 other tv’s with no cable & I find myself watching those more.

The prices keep going up, I am paying $200 a month for service. We do not have any kind of sports channels. I get particularly ticked off whenever they send me an introductory offer for $35 for exactly what I'm getting right now for new customers. The price is too high. Unfortunately there is no other alternative at this moment. But the minute there is I'm switching.

DirecTV can be a joke. I have had them for about 10 years and I cannot stand renewing my contract, for the dumbest reasons. Want to add a box and give them more money, add 2 years for that. Seems like every time I am in contract, I get horrible service. When I am out of contract, everyone treats me well. Customer service is a nightmare! I cannot stand calling customer service, feel like nothing is ever resolved and are always pitching you ATT products and services.

The installation was all done in the way I requested. I asked for some specific routing into my house and the technician obliged. The service was mostly consistent. The monthly price was just too high for a price sensitive customer like me. I didn't have a need to contact customer service. They did not give me too much trouble when I made the decision to cancel. The advertising after I canceled was a little weak. The offers never seemed to get better.

As a DIRECTV customer of 4 years, I have always found their customer service to be friendly, informative and their service to be quick. The main issues I have, are the steady increase in pricing, multiple channels with the same programs and all the extra fees. I am slowly trying to wean my family off and over to Firesticks in order to save $170.00 a month for just news and DIY network.

Good service, customer service. Too many useless channels. Getting too expensive, however. Been with DirectV for about 12 years. Cable not available where I live. DirectV is a better option than Dish (which I have had, in the past). Biggest complaint: Their reps repeatedly call trying to sell me more premium channels, despite my complaining that I wish not to be bothered.

We have been using DirecTV for a few years. The major problem has been loss of service during rain--not necessarily storms but just any hard rain. My biggest complaint is that they continue to offer better and better deals for new customers but keep jacking up the rates for long time customers. You would think that loyalty would deserve some sort of reward.

Direct TV is very good. My only problem is they do not offer a seniors package for seniors on fixed income that is affordable. My mom told me that she will be forced to terminate with Direct TV as soon as her contract ends because of the increase in cost of the service. I spoke with a representative and they did reduce her bill for six months and it will go back up.

Love direct TV and have had it for many years, but I hate the fact that they do not offer Pac 12 Network and the caller ID has not worked right since I upgraded to the new DVR.If I wasn't under contract, I would have changed to Comcast months ago. They offer Pac 12 and have reliable caller ID. For older people with bad eyesight, it is nice to have caller ID. Seems to be at the bottom of your priority list! If you don't get it figured ou, I will be changing when my contract is up!

Don't remember old email directv to high you offer 7.99 or 10.99 movies that suck and same programming month after month on your movie channels should have more and better choices for amount paid each month and once your a customer you don't care about them all promotions go to new customers should do something for customers who have been feeding you for years

We subscribed to DirecTV as a cable service from 2007-2014, and then again as a streaming service from 2018 through the change to ATT.TV in mid 2019, and then through the change to DirecTV Stream again. The cable service was generally okay and customer service was not the best though they were at least reasonably reachable. Our main issues were billing and cost for which we terminated the cable service in 2014. I hate paying for channels I do not use. I had to create a monthly item billing matrix in Excel, which then allowed me to effectively and fully understand my bill at a glance each month and for which I was then able to catch some of their errors. I am not certain if those errors were intentional or not, but I am just a hair short of being certain, and sincerely believe, that their billing statement was intentionally confusing. I believe this is because when we actually understand how and why we are being billed, we are more upset than when we do not understand why our bill is going up, because in the latter case we do not know if there is an appropriate reason for increased or changed billing. The more uncertainty, the less likely we are to challenge the item, particularly since it is a major deal to have to change our TV subscription source. The streaming service was better based on cost/knowing what we are billed for and being better tailored to what we use. However, we still do use at least 2/3 of the channels (down from 5/6ths). When you add the cost of 1gb internet which is too often necessary to get decent uninterrupted service, then I think this is no better than cable, particularly when we still get streaming and software glitches and interruptions. Glitches and issues got slightly worse with ATT.tv and now is even worse with DirecTV Stream. Anyone who has followed the cable TV issue knows that the root problem is paying for channels we do not want. It is unequivocal that the great majority want an à la carte choice. But since they get less money for that, they refuse to allow that - at least in a cost effective way. You can buy many things à la carte today, but it will cost 2-10 times as much or more and purposely so. In this way, ALL CABLE AND STREAMING OPTIONS SUCK!

I like Direct Tv for the most part, but there are a few things that need to be addressed, like for instance when I told the guy on the phone I did not want “free” movie channels because they claim they are free but then show up on my bill for payment and they gave me the movie channels anyway. I then spent way too long trying to get it removed from my bill. It seems the more you watch certain programs, they remove the program from your package and then tell you you need to pay more money to keep the program, no I don’t think so. Also with any satellite, when it rains you loose connection, if it snows too bad you loose connection and end up having to go out and clean off the receiver.

Used to be a member of Direct TV for 12 years but their prices were getting too high. Customer service wasn't interested in offering a better price to a long term customer yet often deeply discount service to new members? I've never understood that. In any event, I liked their product and service, just felt it was over priced and they treat an unknown customer better that a 12 year customer so I went to DISH network basically same product but better price. I get calls all the time now offering discounts you snooze, you lose guys. One beef is seems you have to buy service on a tier level to get certain channels especially in sports and the channels I want Golf SEC etc... forced me to pay a good bit more and get many channels I'd never watch just to get one or two channels I do want. Be nice to have a basic package and then buy other individual channels. DISH is the same and the hulu and others too hate that

I've been a DirecTV customer since 2007. Through the years, the service has been good. A few mishaps over the years due to reps not notating my account for billing issues which resulted in my account being closed and early termination fees being applied. I always kept the service, even through price hikes. Since the AT&T merge, customer service has went downhill. Hard to get reps that understand your issues; package pricing being out of this world. Channels are in higher tiered packages which has you paying $20+ to access one channel that is not included in a smaller package. With the news of DirecTV not being a good purchase for AT&T, I don't know what the future is for my service, but for the most part I appreciate them providing me with loyal customer promos to discount my bill over the cost of 12 months. Helps a lot.

I pay $$$ monthly and there is nothing in my package to watch. I don't understand why I pay for Latina channels and home shopping networks when they don't apply to my lifestyle or choices. Why can't I select from a menu of channels what I am willing to pay for and would like to have? Additionally, I do appreciate the bundle savings now with the merger with AT&T cellular and my high speed internet. It just feels like I could get all the bank for my buck if I had better channel options within my budget. I realize I can upgrade my viewing package for a "nominal fee ", but I still have channels I would never access but must pay for.

We have two problems that haven’t been ironed out. 1. The TV shows will periodically freeze while we are watching them for a few brief seconds and that’s annoying. 2. For close to a year we were unable to receive KSL because the two companies were negotiating a deal - or NOT negotiating a deal. We were told to call in to receive some money taken off our bill, but when we did, they only gave us $10 credit and 3 months worth of the Smithsonian channel and channels that go with it. The way the credits were given was by Direct TV using ALL of their channels and dividing them up by the days missed, therefore we were penalized because we had a huge different package. We should have been given a MUCH bigger credit in our opinions! We do like the channels that we are receiving, though.

We changed from Dish to DirectTV and I've had nothing but complaints from my family. They just don't think DirectTV is as intuitive as Dish and my husband is a computer programmer and my boys are great with computers and devices. I'm not an expert so my expectations are much lower. I'm fine with DirectTV and the service and I feel like we've had better satellite reception, but here are their complaints: When it's in alphabetical search they aren't finding all of their recordings. Latest recordings shows most everything they think but alphabetical shows much less. They hate having to switch between menus to find the type of recording they want. They'd like the default to be all recordings on the first screen they look at. They say FF and Fast Reverse, it's like a jump forward but only a shuffle backwards, they think these should be equal. They feel like Dish does a better job with FF and getting the result you want. They hate the inital warning about inactivity and having to hit Select again. They hate that sometimes they can't FF through a show's commercials (even though it's a show they told the TV to record). They don't like that the jump forward button only goes 10 minutes forward at a time. And as you jump back it just shows you the last image so you don't know where you're at and it's hard to hit the right place. Anyway, if we ever switch from DirectTV it'll be because the guys are nitpicky about the remote and DVR. The two things we use the most. Thanks!

I would say with moving they where great at helping get things going for my home but still had to leave them due I was unable to view my favorit shows.

I liked the amount of live television stations provided by directv and the video on demand selections. I did not like how their prices increased unexpectantly and their lack of willingness to work with me on a reasonable price for their service.

We are long time customers, overall I am happy though we have had issues in the past. The biggest issue we have had is the disruption of local channels due to contract issues. With that said we have liked it for the most part.

I refuse to get this service again. They conveniently built their program selection to include and exclude certain channels to keep you wanting more, which obviously came with more money. No option for individual channel subscriptions makes this a dud. Not worth the money!

Before they merged with AT&T they were the best. Customer service was spot on. Now spotty. We had recently moved and was having issues with on demand it took several call backs and 3 techs to come out at 3 different times to get it fixed.

I had DIRECTV for several years and had good service. We rarely had any problems and when we did, they were resolved very quickly. I finally did quit DIRECTV because I was paying $140 per month for just basic. I tried to get a better price, but couldn't.

we have had directtv for years and since we are a long time customer and not a "new" customer all the promotions are solely based on getting new customers, the only way a long time customers gets any special perks is to call in

Would be far better if you did not have multiple of duplicate channels and them wanting you to pay for very old movies and TV shows you can pay little next to nothing on Hulu or Netflix or Doing etc. You would pay, in their right mind, for OnDemand old stuff found on the channels offered?

Their equipment remains outdated until there is an issue and then they will offer to upgrade, but it usually comes at a cost or an extension of your contract. Their customer service reps are usually friendly and helpful, but can't always answer the questions.

Overall I didnt have any issues with DirectTv although the price could be a little costly and when you call in for customer service be prepared to wait. The actual reception is great and it worked even with bad weather when you are stuck inside.

We've been a long-term customer and have had mixed results with the TV offerings and the customer service. One of the biggest challenges was during the most recent Olympics. The signal was weak and spotty. The movie offerings are not refreshed on a regular basis and they tend to recycle the same movies over and over..

Have a hard time finding channels, they need to have a list of them available. Would be nice to have just the channels that I watch in a bundle and not have to pay a lot for ones I do not watch. Have talked to you about this, but no one listens.

I am unhappy with any dish like TV. Before I got DirectTV I had Att U Verse which was a true cable company. But I was told AT&T was doing away with U-Verse so I changed. I have seriously thought about changing to a true cable company again. As everytime it rains or the wind blows the dish is blown off of the sattelite.

I get DirecTV for free with our HOA. The picture quality isn’t great, but that’s mostly because it’s free. We did have to call customer support once, which was not a fun experience. They kept telling us to do things we had already tried to get it working. Overall, not bad, but not great.

The product is good. Reliable tv. I hate how much I pay. My promotion pricing ended and my bill almost tripled. I can never find another deal. If I ever have a question on my bill, I dread calling customer service. Takes so long to actually talk to a real person. So many fees and taxes too. Wish it was cheaper and had better customer service.

Although I think any major Satellite TV company is robbing people, I have enjoyed usingDirect TV. This is what my family had growing up and we never had too many problems and the only time we did was because of severe weather.

Not the greatest selection in variety of movies and Loss of power during a storm. We also were hoping to save more money than we are by switching from another service. Other than that, We are satisfied with quality of service and crystal clear Hi Def programs.

I have had Direct TY since 1995.My only complaint is the way they bundle there channels. I watch maybe 40 channels. Why should I have to pay for more than 150 channels I never watch. I am retired and my wife will retire in a few months and we may have to cutback on some things.

The service is very reliable, but be prepared for the price hikes that will follow. Honestly, you will likely only ever watch about 20 of the 200 or so channels that are made available. In that regard you'll end up paying for useless junk. This is why they need to have a custom package offer, available at a reduced rate.

The prices are too high. We used Directv for over 20 years, but after moving, we decided to go with cable and a triple play plan for far cheaper than we had premium Directv for. The customer service was always good, I don't have any complaints about that. Even their CS rep said they don't use Directv because of the prices. But since AT&T took over, service did change and prices went up more.

We decided to end our service with Directv and they hounded us to the point of being rude trying to get us to stay with them and that really made it so we would not go back. Our initial decision to get rid of the service was due to the rate increases that and changes to programs that we could no longer see unless we went with a more expensive package. Also there was the issue with the service cutting out with storms but that was understandable.

I was happy with my service and had a great service plan wasn't too expensive until I moved and was told in order to transfer my service to my new address they would have to come out and set up the satellite dish and it was going to cost me $2500 that they only do the free installation when you are a new customer so by not agreeing to that I canceled my service only to be stuck with the remaing months of the contract they wanted me to pay ended up going to collections and I don't plan to ever pay it can sit there until it falls off my credit..
