3 Things to Know Before Choosing a Pest Control Company

No one wants to deal with pests. Whether the problem is rodents or ants, pests do more than just disgust us. They can transmit disease, trail bacteria, and eat away at the wires and structures of our homes. Taking care of your pest problem preserves the integrity of your home’s structure and your family’s health. Pest control has become more popular over the last several years, but it is not a new practice. From the time people started farming, individuals had to find ways to ensure bugs and other animals did not disturb their crops. While setting cats on the prowl may have worked for the ancient Egyptians, you may need a more sophisticated option than your household Cheshire. Luckily, pest control, as a growing industry, has innovative plans to eliminate all types of pests from your home, all while keeping the Earth in mind.

Paying for Pest Control

The pest control industry has generally organized payments by plan, so most payments fit in one of the following categories:

  • Pay one lump sum
Some companies will provide an option to pay one large payment which covers all visits for the length of a contract. This is one of the least common payment methods in the industry.
  • First visit fee with subsequent visit fees being less
This is probably the most common payment option in the industry. After an inspection and first service, customers pay an initial fee. Think of this as a deductible. It will cover the first visit, and it will also be the most expensive payment. After this first visit, all following visits will have a less expensive fee. For example, if you bought a pest control plan under this payment system, you may pay $125 for the first visit, but for every quarterly visit, you may only pay $80.
  • Single service fee
Almost all companies offer a single service fee, but it is discouraged for several reasons. Single service fees are generally more expensive; most single service prices are around $130-$250, depending on the service. Companies also discourage single visits because one visit is not the best solution to completely eliminate most pests.
  • Monthly fee
A few pest control companies offer monthly payment options. These payments are generally the same price every month, which differentiates them for the second option.

Remembering Location

When looking into pest control, always verify the location of a company first. Because pest control companies send representatives to provide an in-house service, many companies only service local areas. While there are several large pest control companies that cover areas throughout the United States and even into other countries, they are less common. This may seem inconvenient, but it could actually benefit you. Keep in mind that local pest control companies likely understand the specifics of pest control in your region. After all, pest control needs in the desert regions of the Southwest will differ greatly from pest control in the humid East Coast.

Choosing Plans vs. Single Service Visits

While pest control companies would obviously prefer all customers to buy plans rather than single service visits, there are pros and cons to both.

  • Plans
Plans allow you to maintain peace of mind. Most bugs coming into your home require multiple services to eliminate them and then halt the reproduction cycle. An inspector will come and visit your home and give you a plan to suit those needs. They will continue to care for your home for approximately a year, returning either monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly. The added bonus to plans is that most pest control companies offer a type of guarantee: if pests come back between the scheduled visits, they will return and take care of the problem, free of charge. With a plan, you will end up paying more than you would for a single service, but you have longer, more assured coverage.
  • Single Service Visits
While plans are best for some situations, single service visits can also be ideal. For customers who may be dealing with something other than bugs, such as mice or even a raccoon, entering their home, a one-time service may be all you need. Keep in mind, though, that these services tend to be a bit pricier. Overall, a single service will cost less than a plan, but it will most likely cost about the same as two or even three visits within a plan.

What types of contracts do pest control companies use?

While some pest control companies use contracts, most rely on recurring service as a type of contract. For most plans, companies promise monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly visits after the initial visit, and those visits generally cover a year. A company will likely tell you it does not have any contracts, and that would be the truth. However, most service plans cover a year, so you are likely to be working with a pest control company for a year, regardless of a contract.

What pest control company is best for me and my family?

Make sure to research the best pest control company for your location. Consider the price, the extent of service, the chemical effects, etc.

How can I protect my home against pests?

There are things that you can do in addition to paying for pest control to help guard your home. First, keep your home clean. Nothing says to bugs and rodents “welcome to your new home” like a mess. Most bugs are drawn into homes to look for food, so keep the kitchen and pantry clean and free of crumbs. Second, check for openings in your doors, windows, chimneys, vents, pipes, and so on. Especially if you own an older home, pests could creep in the cracks of your windows and doors, so make sure to close them firmly and repair any damage. Third, don’t let water linger. Just like humans, pests need water, but not just for drinking. Water is often a breeding ground for pests, so fix your leaky faucets and dry up your bathroom floors.

Why is it so difficult to find pricing online?

Keep in mind that much of pest control depends on specifics. Most pest control companies require an inspection before providing a quote because they need to consider the following:

  • Size of the home
  • Location of the home
  • Type of pests to eliminate
  • Extent of any existing problems
  • Type of plan or service required
