Verizon Wireless is the largest service provider of wireless telecommunications in the United States with over 150 million subscribers nationwide. In business since 2000, the company was originally a merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE, and over the last several years it has picked up several smaller regional carriers to build the largest wireless network in the United States.

Verizon has a wide variety of products and services to offer customers, including wireless phone service, basic phones, smartphones, tablets, wireless Internet, cloud storage for photos, videos, and other media. Verizon is one of the few companies that allows customers to integrate their Internet devices and cloud media.

Regarding Verizon's quality as a cell phone provider, there are several pros and cons worthy of consideration in addition to the 700+ Verizon reviews below.

The Good

  • Devices Available
  • Plans Offered
  • Top Features
  • Smart Family
  • Deals

Devices Available

Verizon has the best selection of phones, including all of the latest Android and Apple devices, including ASUS, Google, LG, Motorola, Palm, Apple, and Samsung brands. Notable recent models include:

  • Apple iPhone Xs
  • Apple iPhone Xs Max
  • Apple iPhone Xr
  • Samsung Galaxy S10
  • Samsung Galaxy S10 plus
  • Samsung Galaxy S10e

Customers also have the option of device trade-ins or bringing their current phone. In fact, when you switch to Verizon with your current phone, you get a $250 PrePaid Mastercard in addition to a free SIM card when you order one online and pick it up in the store.

In addition, the Verizon store has basic phones (Kyocera, LG, and Sonim brands), certified pre-owned phones, pre-paid phones, and phone accessories like the Apple watch, other wearable tech, HD security cameras, voice-activated wireless speakers, and charging pads.

Plans Offered

Verizon offers a broad variety of plans in order to suit a range of customer needs. Plans include:

  • Unlimited ($35-$60 per line per month with autopay)
  • Shared data plans ($35-$70 per month total for an individual or family)
  • Prepaid plans ($30+ per month)
  • International plans (options for travel, prepaid international services, or talk and text from the U.S.)
  • Connected device plans (for tablets, hotspots, and connected devices)
  • Single device plans (for basic phones requiring only talk and text, or a tablet or hotspot requiring minimal data)
  • Business plans for 5+ lines

Top Features

Verizon's premium plan, the AboveUnlimited plan, you pay $60/line per month plus taxes and fees, but you get several unique perks. Here's what you get:

  • 75 GB data at 4G LTE speeds
  • Unlimited talk and text
  • HD-quality streaming (720p upload speeds)
  • Unlimited mobile hotspot (20 GB at 4G LTE)
  • Verizon Up Rewards
  • Talk, text, and data to Mexico and Canada
  • 5 TravelPasses per month to use in 185+ countries
  • 500 GB Verizon Cloud
  • Apple Music account

The GoUnlimited and BeyondUnlimited include some of the above features, (including some mobile hotspot data, limited-time Apple Music account, unlimited data, unlimited calls, and unlimited texting) but not all.

Smart Family

Verizon has an in-carrier parental control system that works with the Smart Family app, which costs $9.99/month after a 30-day trial. The app has content filters for apps and websites, location tracking, the ability to pause the internet, and contact blocking capabilities. If you don't want the location tracking feature, you only pay $4.99/month.

Deals

The carrier is continually providing promotional discounts for new phones and new customers but also consistently offers exclusive deals to military and veteran-status personnel, first responders (firefighters, police, EMS workers, retirees, and volunteers), and employees.

The Bad

  • Customer Complaints
  • Pricing

Customer Complaints

Customer reviews give insight into some of the challenges customers can face despite the strengths of the provider. Some customers report that they did not like the original phone that they received and had to wait for an extended period of time to get a Verizon credit so that they could move over to a new device.

There are also customers who have experienced long wait times or failure to get their questions answered by tech support. In this case, the popularity of the carrier can be a detriment to the customer service experience.

Pricing

Verizon's reputation as the carrier with the best network coverage comes at a price. Prices for Verizon's unlimited plans start at $35/line per month and cost up to $60/line per month. Other carriers are generally more affordable. However, you usually get what you pay for.

Per Verizon's terms and conditions, if you cancel a line of service after 14 days of signing a contract, you must pay an early termination fee.

The Bottom Line

Verizon offers one of the most complete cell phone service packages available on the market, excellent network coverage, and it has strong overall customer reviews despite the occasional negative feedback.

Customers who decide to go with Verizon as their cell phone provider can expect the following:

  • Extensive phone selection: Verizon has all phones in high demand and offers financing
  • Unlimited talk and text: this is standard with all packages
  • Unique perks: an Apple music account is included with the unlimited plans
  • Easy to expand service: add lines or set up a business account with ease
  • Billing features: customers can text in to inquire about their account usage status for that billing cycle
  • Parental controls: the Smart Family app gives parents phone monitoring tools

Verizon is no better or worse than any other cell provider. The reason for the medium rating is service is not available in some of the areas I cover and the fees when replace phones. This day and time there should not be dead spots as big as some I have seen. If there was an emergency I would be in serious trouble.

i have used verizon for a long time, and have found them to be just ok..the service area is good, but the phones offered are no longer "free" to customers as they once were and to upgrade, you must pay a lot..you CANNOT get a real person on the phone and must do it all online or on your phone, whether its an issue with billing or your phone..i paid online one month and then got a "nastygram" e mail saying they had not receive my payment..i had to jump through hoops online to get a new log in code, doing it over several times, and then it didnt stay online! ifinally just went online, paid the double amount and never got a thank you or a notice of my other payment, even though i had a confirmation number..i may switch to someone else...!

I miss the days when they offered phone upgrades. I’m currently on a family plan and while my rate is low ($50/line for unlimited text calls and internet) I’ve also got the same phone since 2018 because I can’t afford a new one. Their service area is unmatched and I often flaunt in front of AT&T customers that if I didn’t have Verizon none of us would have service to call an Uber. Verizons website is a tad clunky but it’s also easier to reach a human than it is for other customer service lines

The best part of Verizon for me was their selection of phones and reliability in coverage. Their customer service is lacking because their hold times have always been lengthy prior to COVID. If your call is disconnected with AT&T, they will at least call you back. With Verizon, you might as well try your call again. The departments that transfer you do not do a good job of noting your accounts which means you have to repeat your issues over and over. I wouldn't go with Verizon as long as I have a choice.

I had Verizon for over 15 years because they always had the best signal. last year I bought a house just north of Phoenix and could not get any kind of call through. Texts made it sometimes, but not always. When I talked to the local store they had no idea if they were going to be adding towers in our area. I had to switch to ATT who just built a tower I can see from my front porch. Now I get 5G.

I like that they have good coverage in our mountain area. The have a good number of stores to get service. Wait time can sometime be long but usually a 15 min wait. They have poor customer service in both the stores and 800 support. Used their One Talk product for my business. It was not good. Dropped calls, poor reception. Took it back after 6 months and went to Vonage. Rates are high!

Verizon is easy to work with. I do like having their app on my phone. As with any other product you have to do your research. For instance as a family we were considering going with their unlimited data plan. Everything customer service said sounded good and we could actually save money. I love Excel spreadsheets so I made one up for each family member and entered the cost information in for the unlimited plan. The outcome - two of our family would actually save money, and the other three would be paying much more.

They are the highest quality of phone carriers and often have the best service, but they have terrible customer service. It feels like they just try to sell you everything and there are always more fees than you would expect. If you are coming in for a simple question on phone upgrades or adding a new line, expect to spend $15-30 more a month than you anticipated.

Not to long ago I would have given Verizon a 5. However, they have started making changes to their plans and not only would my bill go up they also charge approximately 40 dollars for start up fees, per line. Second the quality of phone calls has diminished also. Several times a day my phone cuts out, or it can not hold a call and you get dropped. I am hoping for change.

For the most part Verizon's service is great, however I live in a somewhat isolated area and the only time we have cell service, though limited, is when we have a wildfire in our area such as the Carr and Delta fires this summer. During those episodes we get limited service through the temporary tower set up by the US Forest Service group. Our local volunteer fire dept. (Coffee Creek Volunteer Fire Department) has offered Verizon use of our tower but it has not been even considered. No cell service = no warnings of a disaster!

The service is decent, but it's getting more expensive. The dropped my employee discount when I upgraded to unlimited. I was a loyal customer for well over a decade. Now I might switch if I can get a better deal from AT&T. I have some dead spots I hit in both Texas and California. I also have issues with sound dropping when I'm switching towers. If it was perfect, I might think twice, but now that the rates are higher, and I'm adding more lines, I'm willing to try the competition.

Verizon has gotten a lot better over the years. Their customer service has vastly improved and their treatment of your bill and related policies are now a lot more customer-focused and less skeezy. I hate having to get a sales pitch for a different plan half the times I call customer support, but aside from that their support is generally helpful. Their physical stores and kiosks, however, are still strange, sales-y places that feel like they're run by kids who don't really know what they're doing and are overly focused on "upselling" you instead of helping you.

I was with these guys for a long time. I felt constantly like I was being overcharged, but I stayed with them because they had the best coverage. I was always unhappy after customer service calls and it seemed like no one quite knew what they were doing at their offices. They do have great coverage but you are going to pass through the nose for it.

Verizon provided me with great service the only problem I had was that they weren't able to make adjustments for me to get a new phone even though I was willing to pay the price. This was due to the contract that I signed that I wasn't able to make adjustments when I wanted. I have no complaints on their employees or the wireless connection I had with my phone.

I had Verizon for about 6 years. I flel I had a love hate relationship with them. I loved having good cell phone coverge, but hated being locked in to a plan. Since we had a family plan someone was always locked in and couldn't change carriers if we wanted too. The cost of a new smart phone and data plan at Verizon was why I changed carriers. I just couldn't afford what it was going to cost for my husband and I to have smartphones with Verizon.

Service- PERFECTION Price- INSANE I have had LEGIT $750+ bills EVERY month since COVID-19. NO assistance, No break- just "Pay it or lose your service". I pay it, and I cannot wait to get out of it in March! They late fee everything. They credited my account almost $500 the first outrageous bill... Then it got taken back. CLEARED with NO EXISTANCE! Customer Service is A JOKE! In-Stores are mainly NOT CORPORATE so they cannot pull up this information and CORPORATE stores managers do not even know what to say. They shut phone off twice in one month after they took away the credit. AND CHARGED ME $60 TWICW that month for doing it. THIS IS FOR 3 LINES. IPHONE 11 PRO MAX IPHONE 11 PRO BS MIFI that I got scammed into buying without them mentioning a monthly contracted service fee for the service on it.

The cell service is good, with good coverage. When I'm out of the country the global coverage is really confusing so I don't use it unless it's absolutely necessary or I'm it on wi-fi. I've been a long-standing customer and I just feel like they should give some sort of 'discount' on a new phone or a service plan or something to acknowledge long-time customers. So while that has nothing to do with the quality of service, it just makes me feel like they are average. Phone costs are insane (I'm sure it's price fixed) so how about a special promo now and again, one with no strings attached!? And STOP trying to sell me an iPhone. The sales guy pushed and pushed for me to get an iPhone. I don't care if your grandparents have one - I DON'T want one! He was sooo annoying and wanted me to tell him why I don't want one. I don't owe anyone an explanation and at that point, I left and bought a phone through Google! Seriously, train the salespeople properly!

I loved Verizon so much for so long. Even used them traveling overseas. But the local tower that serviced our house had some issues and I called every week for 5 months to report an outage because it would barely send texts, data was out of the question. We had 59mbps download speeds from this same tower before the issues happened. I couldn't pay them $300 a month to only be able to send texts. ATT has since can't through and installed new towers through our whole county. We live in a town of 300 people have speeds that exceed 100mbps download over the cell tower. You can't even get home internet in our area. But this cell signal powers our whole home internet use now and couldn't be happier.

I have been a Verizon customer for years. Their service was great when I lived closer to a larger city. Now that I live on the coast it seems I am on the fringe of Verizon’s coverage. I also do not use a lot of data, but Verizon wants me to upgrade to a “better” plan which would only cost me more per month and not add much benefit n

In the beginning, they were not true keeping their advertizing promises. FIOS works well most of the time. Speed is almost always what it is supposed to be. But, boy, when you gotta call for help, what a nightmare. Next to impossible to get the reps to LISTEN when you don't have a run of the mill problem. They keep repeating their scripts that don't apply.

Bait and switch sales tactics. Signed up for unlimited data based on the sales associate explaining that throttling would only occur when network volume required it. Found out that Verizon automatically restricts data speeds to near dial up speed as soon as a device reaches its cap, regardless of volume on the network.

Really nothing to compare it to but land line. Never had a reception problem. But I do believe they really aren't interested in business. I get better responses from individual owned Verizon stores than Verizon owned stores. This has not always been the case. You can sit forever to buy a new phone. People do like to shop in person and when you set up a shop for that purpose, then you should make it the best available. Online help not bad. I like the app and the freezer kickbacks jeeps my daughter drowning in Starbucks. So three stars because the brick and mortar sucks.

Verizon gets the job done with lots of options of the newest and top-of-line devices in the market. I’ve always been pleased with device availability and pricing. Connection is quite good in both rural and metropolitan areas of my home state. The review is a 3 because of the customer service I have received from the business side of their services. Otherwise, in store and on the phone, I have been given excellent customer service with personal-use phone services.

I have been a Verizon customer for over 15 years. I liked how they used to offer free upgrades and upgrade fees. Now, you have to purchase a new phone over a 24 month period of time which most of the time the phone is junky by the time you are done paying for it, so then you have to purchase a new one. It's perpetual phone payments verse just paying for a service. If you ask for them to waive the upgrade fee they usually honor that, otherwise it's a sly way for them to make more money off of you. Good luck!

Verizon is probably one of the best phone providers out there. However, they are not perfect. Some of the experiences I’ve had with them have led me to consider other phone providers. For instance, I was charged $50 twice for the same phone and never got a refund. I tried calling and visiting one of their stores, and just kept getting the same thing. Eventually, someone I called gave me a partial refund but it still didn’t make sense as to why I could not get all my money back.

My wife had Verizon for a number of years, and we have had a lot of issues with the prices of her bill going up quite randomly. They have great quality service and reception, but the prices are definitely way higher than those of their competitors.
