Verizon Wireless is the largest service provider of wireless telecommunications in the United States with over 150 million subscribers nationwide. In business since 2000, the company was originally a merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE, and over the last several years it has picked up several smaller regional carriers to build the largest wireless network in the United States.

Verizon has a wide variety of products and services to offer customers, including wireless phone service, basic phones, smartphones, tablets, wireless Internet, cloud storage for photos, videos, and other media. Verizon is one of the few companies that allows customers to integrate their Internet devices and cloud media.

Regarding Verizon's quality as a cell phone provider, there are several pros and cons worthy of consideration in addition to the 700+ Verizon reviews below.

In addition, the Verizon store has basic phones (Kyocera, LG, and Sonim brands), certified pre-owned phones, pre-paid phones, and phone accessories like the Apple watch, other wearable tech, HD security cameras, voice-activated wireless speakers, and charging pads.

Plans Offered

Verizon offers a broad variety of plans in order to suit a range of customer needs. Plans include:

  • Unlimited ($35-$60 per line per month with autopay)
  • Shared data plans ($35-$70 per month total for an individual or family)
  • Prepaid plans ($30+ per month)
  • International plans (options for travel, prepaid international services, or talk and text from the U.S.)
  • Connected device plans (for tablets, hotspots, and connected devices)
  • Single device plans (for basic phones requiring only talk and text, or a tablet or hotspot requiring minimal data)
  • Business plans for 5+ lines

Top Features

Verizon's premium plan, the AboveUnlimited plan, you pay $60/line per month plus taxes and fees, but you get several unique perks. Here's what you get:

  • 75 GB data at 4G LTE speeds
  • Unlimited talk and text
  • HD-quality streaming (720p upload speeds)
  • Unlimited mobile hotspot (20 GB at 4G LTE)
  • Verizon Up Rewards
  • Talk, text, and data to Mexico and Canada
  • 5 TravelPasses per month to use in 185+ countries

The GoUnlimited and BeyondUnlimited include some of the above features, (including some mobile hotspot data, limited-time Apple Music account, unlimited data, unlimited calls, and unlimited texting) but not all.

Smart Family

Verizon has an in-carrier parental control system that works with the Smart Family app, which costs $9.99/month after a 30-day trial. The app has content filters for apps and websites, location tracking, the ability to pause the internet, and contact blocking capabilities. If you don't want the location tracking feature, you only pay $4.99/month.

Deals

The carrier is continually providing promotional discounts for new phones and new customers but also consistently offers exclusive deals to military and veteran-status personnel, first responders (firefighters, police, EMS workers, retirees, and volunteers), and employees.

The Bad

  • Customer Complaints
  • Pricing

Customer Complaints

Customer reviews give insight into some of the challenges customers can face despite the strengths of the provider. Some customers report that they did not like the original phone that they received and had to wait for an extended period of time to get a Verizon credit so that they could move over to a new device.

There are also customers who have experienced long wait times or failure to get their questions answered by tech support. In this case, the popularity of the carrier can be a detriment to the customer service experience.

Pricing

Verizon's reputation as the carrier with the best network coverage comes at a price. Prices for Verizon's unlimited plans start at $35/line per month and cost up to $60/line per month. Other carriers are generally more affordable. However, you usually get what you pay for.

Per Verizon's terms and conditions, if you cancel a line of service after 14 days of signing a contract, you must pay an early termination fee.

The Bottom Line

Verizon offers one of the most complete cell phone service packages available on the market, excellent network coverage, and it has strong overall customer reviews despite the occasional negative feedback.

Customers who decide to go with Verizon as their cell phone provider can expect the following:

  • Extensive phone selection: Verizon has all phones in high demand and offers financing
  • Unlimited talk and text: this is standard with all packages
  • Unique perks: an Apple music account is included with the unlimited plans
  • Easy to expand service: add lines or set up a business account with ease
  • Billing features: customers can text in to inquire about their account usage status for that billing cycle
  • Parental controls: the Smart Family app gives parents phone monitoring tools

i tried there home internet service and it was horrible from day 1 I had to had to have multiple modems and when I decided that it wasn't going to work for me it was a real headache to even send the 2 modems back. I was told that I would get a credit on my account for the inconvenience I never received it, I had to call numerous times just to get the charges removed from my account and this ending up being a nightmare as I have had their cell phone service phone 20 plus years and they are just going down hill. I am truly disappointed that I never received what promised and that the service has gotten so terrible especially the customer service as they don't do what they keep their word on what is to be done

I was a Verizon customer for nearly 20 years. The service was very reliable and I was reluctant to leave because of this. The sharply rising prices, especially recently however, finally prompted me to switch. Immediately after switching, Verizon cut off my access to see my bill. As I recall, when I signed up for Verizon all those years ago, I had to prepay for the first month of service. I ended my service with Verizon at the end of my billing cycle yet they oddly owe me only 39 cents which even that, I doubt I’ll see. While I enjoyed the quality of the service, I will not miss the expense. My new service is $100 cheaper per month and is working great.

Had Verizon for 5 years, expensive, but no problems. My dog has heart failure, spent $5,000 last six months getting her set. She is stable and outlook is as good as could be expected. All my creditors helped me financially by deferring payments, except Verizon. They gave me one extra week, my bill was $452, which i accepted, they charged me $10 for speaking to a representative. Verizon never processed the payment. I called to see what happened, they made another arrangement, added a late fee and another $10. When I got the text about the fees, I am furious, call back to dispute because it was Verizon's error, not mine. They told me too bad about the fees, then charged me another $10. I told them that I am not paying these extra fees because of their error. They said they will be making a negative report to the credit bureaus damaging my credit. After 5 years, they would do this, even after learning of my dogs condition. I just needed some extra time to catch up. Verizon just hammered me with baseless fees and intends to damage my credit. Buyer beware of this company.

Moved from another carrier which was a nightmare. I've spent hours trying to get service, register as a customer, sign up for Autopay, apply for military discount, redeem my rebates, etc. Nothing has been easy & I've spent hours on hold for customer service. Customer Service & tech support are helpful once you finally get a hold of someone but you might be on hold for an hour or more. Online instructions are unclear & you get locked out of tasks without warning, if you make too many attempts. The entire process of becoming a new customer is such a hassle. It almost seems like they purposely make it difficult just to discourage you from taking advantage of rebates & discounts.

We've had Verizon for 22 years and have 5 lines on their unlimited plan. Great coverage is their only pro, which is actually huge. We recently switched to Xfinity Mobile to save $100 per month. To our shock, we were billed for our entire billing period when we switched, even though we switched mid-cycle. We also realized we had been being billed for Disney Plus, which we never used. I do recall Verizon sending a text over a year ago announcing they were providing a free trial of Disney Plus. We never used it and had no idea we were being billed $8.99 per month, since we auto-pay our bill each month. Their site doesn't recognize my log in, so I've had to call them and wait on perma-hold to try and resolve. One rep said he was putting thru a request to credit us $180. I never heard back and never received a credit. Finally called back and eventually got through and was told NOPE!! Super shoddy customer service IMO. You should treat exiting customers with the same level of service you would treat existing customers.

The actual phone service quality might be solid, but their call in support is TERRIBLE! I have had a Verizon corporate account for over 20 years and anything to do with their phone support has been bottom of the barrel. In store support is the way to go, when you can manage that. In the last 22 years, I have made one or two payment errors and they have ZERO cooperation for resolution. I was out of town and they actually (supposedly) terminated service on our lines. After paying with a credit card immediately, to regain service, they charged an additional $208.00 to "reconnect" the service on our 8 phone lines. I have been on hold for 45 minutes now to speak with a representative. I wont bore you with the rest of the details. This is NOT how I treat any of my customers. Big time FAIL!

Don't ever buy a phone from Verizon. I just bought a phone a week ago bc my old one (only a year old) kept looping and would not charge or turn on. When I bought the phone, I asked if I was locked into their service or anything, and the employee (kind of new) said no, they don't do that anymore. I explained that my dad retired and was cancelling our family plan, so I would have to switch services soon, as well. I was not told about any 60 day lock policy on new phones. I paid for my phone in FULL PRICE. Yesterday morning, I finally started to set up my new Mint Mobile service, put in the SIM card... and found out the phone was locked into Verizon. I couldn't (and have not been able to since then) make/receive calls or texts. Ugh--I waited on the phone for 30 min, then gave up and went in the store and then spent another 30-45 min on the phone. Finally, someone sent in an unlock appeal... I waited 24 hours--all the find out this morning that the appeal was denied! I have not been able to use my phone, and I spent $400 and so much of my time (buying the phone and trying to unlock it) on this. :( Verizon is a big company with all the power, and all they are interested in is power and control. I can't believe that I paid for my phone in full, and I can't even use it, and they are not helping me. I feel powerless as a customer and consumer. I just know that I am NEVER buying a phone from Verizon again, and I will think long and hard before ever using them as my service provider again.

We had good coverage with Verizon, but did not like their business practices. A Verizon rep called us to say we were not using the amount of data which we were paying for and she was going to help us change our plan so we would pay less money. Very soon after our plan was changed, we started to receive overage charges. No surprise here: when we called to get back on our previous plan, rep said we couldn't go back to that "loyalty plan/service/special" (or whatever they called it) because we agreed to another plan. So, they solicit us under the guise of saving us money, but it turned out to be a sneaky way of getting rid of long-time loyal customer plans (must have been losing money on us).

If this was 4 years ago I would give Verizon a 5. But we've moved from the area and having to rely soley on cell service Verizon is a 1 star. I give an extra start for the past years. Checking thru Cellmapper.net I can see that Verizon's coverage stops just outside my property line. We are surrounded by shopping and I found if I go shopping I have excellent service, less than 1/4 mile away. So why does Verizon's coverage stop short? No one can answer that. I can find two T-Mobile cell towers that cover our home with a long reach of coverage. Verizon's is all about the shopping area nothing else. And G5... will have shorter coverage areas. Coverage map is awesome! Voice provider rating, probably 4.5 out of 5.0, due only to the occasional loss of calls in areas where coverage really should be excellent. The "Unlimited" data plan gets about ' star!!! They are fine if all you want to do is download occasional updates, emails and such. But our internet requirement is between 35GB and 40GB per month. Now, under their new plan, at 15GB, they reduce speed to less than or equal to 600 kB per second. That is not much more than dial-up and is completely insufficient for normal Internet use! And they charge a fortune for two phones and one data line.

Terrible experience after being a customer for over 15 years. Had two different CSR's give me two different upgrade options. When I asked the second person why I was not getting the same upgrade as the previous CSR she tried to tell me that she has never heard of that program. Strange....I have the message here from Verizon showing me my options. After she tried to do the bait and switch, I held my ground and notified her I was going to call corporate. She went in the back room and ...Shazaam...a program appeared. Now, after I complained to corporate about the incident, I received a message that they have been trying to get a hold of me to discuss the issue. They did not....only the one message saying they have repeatedly tried to discuss the issue with me. Spent $700 for two IPhones and additional data....and accessories which is where they make a great commission. Sad thing.....Sprint, At&T, T Mobile, are the worst in terms of coverage and upgrades on phones after two years.

Connectivity pretty good. But petty, grasping, and bureaucratic. Dreadful customer service. It takes ten minutes to get through their telephone maze to a live person. They charge me $10 a day for "international roaming" when I never left America. When I complain, it's "it must have been your fault," and "our system doesn't lie." Oh, and I do? Trying to sign up for an international roaming plan, they tell me "you don't qualify."

Switched because they gave Veteran discount, but very disappointed. I only travel to work and then I’m usually home. Unfortunately, Verizon does not provide coverage at my place of business. I never have any service in my house is very spotty. Once my contract is up, I will be looking for a new company again. Also, even with the discount for the military it’s still too expensive for just one line.

Terrible customer service. Terrible reception. We had Verizon when they were the only cell phone who serviced our area. When we found out they actually didn't service our area and had no towers in the area (Verizon sent a truck out to instigate), they admitted that they had no towers and no service in the area, but still charged us to cancel our plan with them! Shady and shiesty!

Horrible customer service. Trying to get help from Verizon is all but impossible. Their “chat” procedure is terrible and by phone is futile. A Verizon store connected me to “customer service “ to resolve an incorrect item they shipped. After over an hour, and 6 people, it was agreed that i was due a refund. Many months later i have had no communication or refund. Another large company that really doesn’t care, just pay what they bill you don’t ask for correction. The cell service is fine, but horrible customer service.

Their customer support chat the worse. First you explain why yr calling and they give you a site to go to that doesn't help or the computer asks you to repeat question or add more info. when you ask for a real person they give you another robot. You can't get a decent answer for your problem. I gave up after 20+ calls w/o solving anything. Their customer service # is not 24/7 and they are not trained. I get so frustrated I try not to call them since it is a big waste of my time. I only keep them because i live in country and they are only cell service that works.

I have been a Verizon customer for many years. Over time, I have seen customer service go down and prices go up. The only reason I have stayed with them is because they seemed to have the best reception in my area. I have recently seen commercials for other companies claiming to be as good or better than Verizon in this regard yet they offer much better prices. I may give them a try.

Typical big box cell carrier. Complicated and hard to understand billing charges and never ending taxes. The coverage was iffy in my area a year later the company changed my area from 4G to 3 G and I subsequently lost all coverage. These companies are quick to remind us that “we” are in a contract with them but in this case the tables were turned and I had to remind “them’ that they had entered a contract with ME and that was to provide me with cell service…which was no gone. After some haggling I was provided with a no charge micro cell tower to regain service but I did not appreciate the complications.

Crappy customer service. No one can ever fix your problem. Their service is never any good especially internet. I have blocked a number on my line and it can still call and text me. so that feature i pay for and it doesnt work. I also had the insurance on my phone i pay for it extra every month so if my phone break i dont have to work out all that money for a new one. They advertise it as you can get your screen fixed anywhere at no cost if your have the insurance. and that they can come to your house and do it !! 100% a lie ..i had to pay over 200.00 for a new phone after i pay all this money on insurance. Not to mention i bought my phone brad new and i had to send my broken phone in to get fixed and instead of sending me a brand new phone like i had originally purchased less than 6 months prior they sent a used phone

Neve again, and YOU don’t have too! Had them over 8 years, the highest possible charges for 1 line. They just are evil and greedy. They are however intelligent and hire pretty intelligent people. So you will get someone to help you and explains how to do something, however you will pay a high price—-but WHY would you? Due to their greed many left and others have stepped up their game. I feel more wholesome business motives or roots in other companies with similar service than Verizon. Never want to be part of that again. Suck you dry—-bad roots Excellent coverage Excellent service Smart people and managers Start a business relationship in place that is healthier: Now you have choices and that means you the customer can be in a better and more in control of both your who provides for cell service and their customer service capacity. Hidden fees! What they don't tell you in the awesome $49.99/month deals for internet is that they require a $150 security deposit that they keep for A YEAR! Also, their autopay set up is not intuitive. Also, once you're done with that awesome deal, they raise the price to $54.99/month and constantly try to add hidden fees. If I didn't check my bill every month, I would have been charged for random fees that I don't understand and then go through a difficult refund process. For the actual quality of internet, I have the deal I listed above and it's mostly fine except the range doesn't cover my whole apartment (1100 sq ft) and our two desktop computers that both use ethernet get disconnected randomly for reasons unknown.

Verizon has the best Fios and Cell / Wireless service. However, Verizon also ruined my perfect mid 800's FICA and I never had a negative report in over 20 years of my credit. It all started with a text and email they sent me that they owed me money for an over charged. All of a sudden, they reported to all credit bureaus that I was the one who owed the money and also that I owed $4000 or $5000 recurring for at least a year which is hard to believe for just Internet service (no TV or Cell)... All because one rude agent after I called decided that I owed the money and not Verizon. Luckily with enough proof and a great lawyer, I got my perfect Fica back with a letter of apology and clearing all negatives from credit report.

The company has great mobile and internet services, cust svc reps are polite, but needs some major improvement in some areas: Calling customer service: Loooong hold time Package changes: be careful with any changes, adding or removing a service might cause you to lose an existing deal or discounts and reps won’t tell you because they think that simply what you want. Even if I say I’m trying to get the best value, while reducing or maintaining the same monthly rate. Ability to fix their mistake in the system: awful! We returned a rented router at the shop, they didn’t ask if we were canceling (which we weren’t), but they went ahead and canceled our account. Lost internet for 2 days, they were unable to reinstate my account. They had to create a new one and applied manual discounts to match what I used to have. However, I received my bill recently and it’s majorly higher than what I used to pay. So gotta call them again, what an ordeal! Billing: simplify the way you bill, and your statements will be less complex too.

Honestly the only good think about Verizon is their connectivity. To my experience, nothing else matches that. Other than that I haven't been satisfied with their customer service or pricing. $80 per line is an absurd price to me and once we switched, Verizon didn't make any kind of counter offers.

They use to be great but now service sucks and it seems like they are just looking for ways to squeeze more money out of you and nickle and dime you in return. I'm really thinking about switching. Lots of these smaller companies are making mergers that will give them access to a robust network.

Verizon recommended a Samsung phone to me as a new phone. Sales person told me amazing things about it. After using the phone for less than 6 months, it started acting up. It would call the wrong person when tapping the name in contacts. Call merge didn't work if the person didn't pick up. Verizon wouldn't switch the phone out and said it was my responsibility to do the research on the phone not the sales person. Impossible to do research on a new phone and they pushed it to me. Samsung didn't warranty either. Match made in heaven.

I had a bad experience with Verizon. The customer service was very poor. They did not try everything to help me out with a very high bill and additions I didn't approve. They were also very expensive, the most expensive then other companies.

There nationwide, that’s pretty much the only thing I like about them. There no very helpful to you nor do they seem very knowledgeable when you in serious need of there help with a problem.

I've been with Verizon for more than 15 years. They are the only one that I found works best in my neighborhood, but I still get a lot of missed and dropped calls. It's very expensive.

We had Verizon for the longest time, but they have really gone downhill. I would say they are on par with T-Mobile and ATT helm when they used to be the clearcut leader in mobile.

I was looking for a new cell service and I didn't choose Verizon because of their confusing plans and expensive phones. I feel like they're definitely over priced and the cell service isn't that great like they claim to be.
