For small repairs that are are difficult to get out of, Choice covers the cost of repairs. However, when it comes to larger amounts that are close to (or higher than) the covered amount for an appliance, they give unreasonable excuses to get out if covering it. For example, they claim that a malfunctioning mechanism in a built-in microwave door is because of "damage" because a part inside the door is "broken" and the only option is to replace the entire door. On the other hand, the replacement cost for an appliance is nowhere close to the cost of even a Builder-grade equivalent. They also try to default your payment to a Lowe's gift card instead of a check.

In the 8 years that I have had choice I have had to replace a built in oven and they only paid me $300 and they are at least minimum 1200 plus installation. I had a dryer That needed to be replaced they plaid nothing and said it was my problem. I have had An air Condition replaced 2 years ago$4,000 out of my own pocket And it took 2 months in the middle of summer. I had a bathroom leak upstairs they tore out my ceiling downstairs Fix the leak which was only Something something in the bathtub that needed to be replaced so they didn't need to rip out the wall Then I had to make a new claim and pay again to get the drywall down stairs fixed Which they did not texture they just filled the hole and drywalled but not texture.And now I have My heater not working it's 52 in my house And Looked at it Looked at it and said it probably really switched And left and 2 weeks later I had to call him back They said they would have the part on mon. I waited all day and never heard from them. I still have no heat. ( 1st call was Dec 12)

I’ve been a customer with Choice Home Warranty for about 7 - 8 yrs. I have coverage on three properties. One being a rental property. The cost of the plan is what initially enticed me. My dislike is when it comes to larger cost items they are quick to deny a claim and then if you appeal they give you a fraction of the cost of the repair in “pity money” things that should be deemed normal wear and tear are met a denial. They do not offer accurate replacement value when appliances need to be repaired. Good technicians are a needle in a hay stack. I’ve also been with worst companies so in comparison they’re just ok. It sometimes feels like you’re penalized for filing a claim but that’s why we pay for coverage to use it when needed. I only file when absolutely necessary.

I have only had one encounter. I was extremely disappointed that my refrigerator was dismissed as having a prior problem. I hadn't had a problem with it before I reported it to you. My microwave was fixed without incident during same house call. The repairman expressed his dislike of having to travel so far. I hope in the event of an appliance failure in the future, it will be faster to get a repairman to my house. I don't have the money to pay upfront. The repairman himself was awesome. He was very professional, courteous, and explained his findings accurately. I referred my sister in law to choice and I was suppose to get a reward of some kind. I have not received anything.

On the positive and every employee that I dealt with has been great. On the negative side it’s a warranty that is designed to cover some, but not all of the repair. Example your air-conditioning system goes out. They have to replace the outdoor unit because if its age, the indoor unit needs to be replaced as well, but they won’t pay for that Because they say it’s not broken. Well they can’t replace the outside unit without doing the indoor unit so it seems like a package to me accommodation so instead we had to pay about $3000 out-of-pocket. I’ve dealt with other home warranty companies over the years. An example would be First American And never had to have that experience. I always buy the premium plan and I guess I assumed, my mistake that the premium plan covers stuff like that. Also had a hot water heater that went bad again out of pocket we had to pay 300+ dollars 125 of which was to dispose of it and the other was because they have to replumb it to make it work. Would make sense to me that anytime you replace a hot water heater. You have to replumb it. With First American we had a similar repair and we did not encounter any of those extra cost. So my advice is read the fine print.

I pay for a service every month that I might not use for years and when it’s something major they don’t want to pay for it to be fixed so the customer is paying out more money. For example my microwave went out and all they gave me was 249.00 on a 500.00 dollar microwave and I had to pay for the installer to replace. It ended up costing me out of pocket 600.00. Same with the hot water heater it cost me 700.00 out of my pocket. They lie and said it was for inspection but no one came and inspect. So where did my 700.00 dollars go if that was the case it was cheaper for me just to go to Lowe’s and buy one

This last interaction was a 5 star , the technician came out quickly and completed the oven repair. The last interaction was not so good as the refridgerator was leaking and they could not locate a repair person. I had to disassemble and get the unit out of the house as it was damaging the hardwood floors. Since it was no longer serviceable they only would pay $150 of the replacement. I had no choice but to except it however it was not my fault they could not locate a repair person. They felt offering for me to find one was acceptable and then they would consider reimbursment all while leaking on my floor. So one good experience that was a 5 and one that was a 1 so I felt 3 is fair.

I did not have any experience with home warranties. I asked around my friends, family, and neighbors. I was quite surprised to find out that they all had quite a range of different home warranty companies. None of them really stood out, but Choice Home Warranty seemed like it had a pretty good average satisfaction rating across the board. So I decided to go with Choice. I recently made a claim for my garage door opener that stopped working. Everything was fine and I am satisfied with the service, except ( according to the technician, the SOP for Choice was to always try to repair first and replacement was the final option if all else fails ). My repairs took 4 separate visits, spanning a couple of weeks due to having to order parts and waiting. The parts were major components of the opener and it did not make any sense to me, seemed faster and cheaper to just replace the whole complete unit ? He replaced a part, it failed... replaced another part, and it seemed fine. But a few days later the opener failed again. He replaced parts again and it failed. He came back a few days later and replaced the main assy, and things have been good since. Now, I understand that for a major appliance like a refrigerator, or washer / dryer, I can understand that. But a garage opener ? The repair technician was great, friendly and professional. The claims taker at Choice was also great, friendly, professional, and honestly seemed like she wanted to take care of my issue. My one and only concern is that the monthly rate for coverage is way too expensive. And this is what I hear from everyone. Some have cancelled their coverage stating that is is probably better to just set that money aside for when you need it. That is and average of about $ 700 a year. Go 2-3 years without a claim and you have $ 2,100 stashed away for when you need it. What about 5 -6 years that you don't have a claim ? Look, i'm not stupid. Its like any other insurance coverage, it's a gamble. There is always a possibility for a future expensive disaster. And when that time comes, you will be happy to have the protection and coverage. BUT, regardless, the monthly cost is still rather high. I'm on the fence about it. I'll continue to keep my policy, but I don't know for how long I can afford to do so ? Just my 2 cents worth, thank you for letting me speak. Mike M.
