UnitedHealthcare offers Medicare, Medigap, Medicaid, and plans compatible with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). UnitedHealthcare also offers excellent member resources.
Before purchasing a health insurance plan, it's important to know if UnitedHealthcare is good insurance. While different UnitedHealthcare plans have different premium rates and cost-sharing rules for medical expenses, customer reviews offer great insight into the quality of the insurance coverage and customer service.
Overall, UnitedHealthcare is a well-known health insurance carrier and worth considering.
UnitedHealthcare insurance company is a health insurance provider that is owned and operated by its parent company, UnitedHealth Group. This company was founded in 1977 and, with almost four decades of experience, offers a really wide variety of health insurance plans.
UnitedHealthcare ranks in the top ten health insurance companies. This high ranking shows that UnitedHealthcare is a reliable health insurer. While it could have a higher star rating, it's star rating is average for the industry.
Customer Review: Kimberly from Hurlock, Maryland
"United Health Care is definitely my choice for health care. All bills are quickly and competently dealt with. In addition, when I have called for more information or to check the status of a medical provider, United Health Care has always had excellent customer service. The representatives are intelligent, extremely polite and very anxious to help. Their attitudes are very positive and cheerful. They are one of the best companies in any area that I have ever had the pleasure to turn to."
UnitedHealthcare has received many postive reviews on BestCompany.com. These reviewers mention satisfaction with the claims process, provider network, and coverage.
Some of the plans at UnitedHealthcare are open-access, and others are in-network only plans. In-network only plans cover patient care received from professionals
UnitedHealthcare has contracted with. If your preferred provider is out-of-network, you'll pay the full cost yourself.
In addition, UnitedHealthcare offers Consumer-Directed Health Plans (CDHP) options that are compatible with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs).
As is typical for the industry, you'll need to work with UnitedHealthcare to learn more about options available in your area.
When considering a health plan it's important to look at the covered services, premium rates, and out-of-pocket expenses to make sure that you find an insurance policy that meets your needs.
Common health insurance plan network structures include Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). HMO plans only offer coverage for care received by network providers. PPO plans offer more flexibility because they offer coverage for out-of-network care.
Often, in-network service has lower out-of-pocket costs than out-of-network service. You can get the most value out of your health plan by visiting in-network doctors. This will help keep your medical bills lower.
Because the cost of a health plan varies based on several factors, including the number of people insured and the kind of policy chosen, those interested in a UnitedHealthcare health policy should research plans on its website to understand more about how much you'll pay for medical services with different plans.
UnitedHealthcare also offers Medicare and Medicaid plans for consumers seeking Medicare or Medicaid services. It also participates in the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). UnitedHealthcare's Medicare plans include Advantage plans and prescription drug plans. Individuals seeking a Medicare supplement plan (Medigap) can also find one from UnitedHealthcare.
Original Medicare is not available through any private insurer because it is managed by the government. A Medicare Advantage plan covers the same medical services that Original Medicare does. Most Advantage plans also include qualifying prescription drug coverage, which means you don't need to buy additional coverage.
Plan offerings vary by state. Specific information regarding available plans, premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses can be found on the UnitedHealthcare's Medicare site.
UnitedHealthcare offers short-term health insurance to people under age 65. These plans are great if you need temporary health coverage. They offer low premiums and primarily cover preventive care and emergency services. They also cover care related to any new illness that you develop while the plan is in effect. Most of UnitedHealthcare's short-term plans also cover prescriptions.
Keep in mind, however, that these plans do not cover pre-existing conditions.
The dental and vision coverage at UnitedHealthcare is also good. The company has websites dedicated to both dental and vision insurance. For dental coverage, there are employer-sponsored plans, individual, and family plans.
These are great resources for individuals buying insurance and employers seeking to offer good health benefits to employees.
As far as individual and family dental plans work, preventative care is generally covered fully without a deductible or waiting period. The cost-sharing for other kinds of dental work varies by plan. Dental benefits differ for every state, but even if the dentist you want to see is out of UnitedHealthcare's network, it still has some plan options for you.
Vision insurance typically includes 100 percent coverage for an eye exam, glasses, and frames, including an option to add a scratch-resistant surface to your lenses. Other benefits depend on the individual plan.
In addition to health care insurance, UnitedHealthcare offers disability, critical illness, accident, and life insurance.
A few other health insurers offer similar types of supplemental insurance, so these offerings make UnitedHealthcare competitive for those interested in buying supplemental insurance plans.
UnitedHealthcare offers group plans for small businesses, large businesses, and national accounts. However many employees you have, UnitedHealthcare offers plans to meet your needs.
UnitedHealthcare's offerings vary by state, so it's best to work with UnitedHealthcare directly to learn more about your options.
Most healthcare insurance carriers offer their policyholders member resources. United Healthcare's offers competitive and helpful tools. When you enroll in a UnitedHealthcare plan, you sign up for a personal account in the online portal, myUnitedHealthcare.com.
Through it, you have access to any of the following:
Many of these features are also available through UnitedHealthcare's app.
The ability to estimate healthcare costs based on your plan and search costs by service, health condition, and doctor are advantageous. It allows you to understand costs, avoid surprises, and budget for out-of-pocket expenses like copays and coinsurance.
Through this tool, you can also view quality ratings for in-network providers. You can use this tool to find high quality and cost-effective care. This kind of tool and cost transparency is difficult to find in the healthcare industry, so its availability makes UnitedHealthcare stand out from other providers.
Members also benefit from an online glossary of medical terms, a Healthy Pregnancy app, and access to Virtual Visits (telemedicine).
Members also benefit from support programs that help them live healthy lives. Programs support behavioral health, disease management (e.g. heart disease and diabetes), addiction, weight loss, and fitness.
If you're eligible, you can also access UnitedHealthcare's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to get referrals for assistance with life situations.
Many health insurers offer support programs to their members, and UnitedHealthcare's support resources make it competitive.
UnitedHealthcare is a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group (UHG), which has decades of experience. Backed by this insurance company, UnitedHealthcare puts an emphasis on technology and innovation. It strongly encourages both individual and societal health.
For five years in a row, Fortune named UHG one of the World's Most Admired Companies in the insurance industry. In addition, the company won a Stevie Award in 2015 for its customer service model, called Advocate4Me. All of these facts about the company add to their overall positive customer culture.
UnitedHealthcare is dedicated to helping people. To contact UnitedHealthcare, people can use phone numbers and a tool to provide feedback to the company online.
UnitedHealthcare further demonstrates its dedication to helping its members live healthier lives and have better health outcomes with its Health4Me app. The Health4Me app contributes a lot to customer service as well.
Through its 24/7 nurse hotline, its tool to refill a prescription, and its capabilities to estimate costs and check medical records, UnitedHealthcare has removed many hassles associated with health insurance logistics. The app even allows members to let customer service know they want to be contacted-making it possible to avoid being put on hold on a phone call to customer service.
Unfortunately, UnitedHealthcare has a substantial number of negative reviews. Having negative reivews is common for the industry. Reviewers who left poor ratings mentioned difficulty with communication, coverage, and claims denials.
As you read negative reviews, pay attention to where reviewers are from. Consider your situation and medical needs with what reviewers share about theirs.
If you're in a similar situation or in the same area, you may want to weigh concerns more as you make a decision. Even if you are in the same area, remember that UnitedHealthcare may offer multiple plans in your area, so you may still be able to find one that meets your needs.
One potential disadvantage here is that some health plans and their benefits are state-specific. UnitedHealthcare's website filters its offerings by state. It's easy to see what's available in your state when you look at health insurance options online.
You should make sure that you understand the fee schedule (premiums, copays, and coinsurance), out-of-pocket limit, how the plan covers pre-existing conditions, and prior authorization requirements that are part of your plan.

Best coverage I have had. They are contracted with great providers and make it easier to get the help I need. The customer service is trash and I have a few problems where I just keep getting transferred from person to person and never get help. One time they refused to put an emergency room visit in network because the hospital was contracted but the emergency room doctor on shift was not. If I am on my death bed, I should not have to ask if the only doctor available is in my network, especially since everything else in the hospital is contracted.
Coverage is pretty good. The out-of-network claims process is onerous as they're clearly trying to defer you from submitting them.
I have loved United Health Care! They have a lot of providers and offer great plans for me and my family. After dealing with hip surgeries, car accidents, ER visits, and pregnancies, they always take care of us.
I love the plan options I have with UHC. They are the most complete and comprehensive health care our family has ever had. They have helpful programs that can assist with finding providers and plan benefits.
UHC has been solid and consistent. Claims are processed efficiently, correctly, and no need to fight for what is covered or not. They are much better to deal with than Blue Cross.
I have only had one billing issue since they have been my health care insurance and it was resolved favorably in one phone call.
Great care Plans great thanks for taking care of my family Information and let’s us heads up when it’s time for some test we need

Having a nurse come to check on me 1 a month or every 3 months is great. Now my 80 year old father has United also and he loves them too. Answers to all our healthcare needs is fast and discreet and they help my dad with all of his healthcare needs.
Do not recommend, hard to work with, constant battle to get claims submitted and approved, rates are low to start with, then skyrocket
Have no problem getting information or help with my insurance question are anything medical wise
UnitedHealthcare is my current insurance provider for myself and my children. I’ve had nothing but good experiences with this company. My benefits are affordable and any time I need something explained to me, customer service is always willing to help.
It's easy to find good physicians in network with United Healthcare, both for primary care and specialists. Despite multiple options through my job I choose United Healthcare every year because of the quality of the physicians in their network.

UnitedHealthCare is a disgrace and a joke in every sense. Forget whatever they self-describe themselves as, as a consumer of a good or service, I find them to be not only woefully incompetent, but they lie, have out of date data, and I cannot understand how this does not equate to FRAUD. If you charge for a service – to provide medical resources for allegedly QUALIFIED, IN-NETWORK entities – and the database they allegedly maintain for subscribers (paying customers) has companies in it that are closed, have moved, or otherwise don’t exist (primary doctors, orthopedists, radiology), how is that not FRAUD? I even asked a call center representative to ensure a place was open and taking patients. After being on-hold for quite a while, she came back on, gave me a phone number and an address, and said they were taking new customers. I drove to the address. The building was almost vacant and that provider was certainly no there. I called the number and could not get through the IVR to a person; it kept looping no matter what option I choose. Did the rep lie to me? I think so. This is not a one-off as it has been happening for many years, and when you need routine care, when you need emergency services, to spend hours and hours in frustration not being able to take care of yourself or a loved one… There is no accountability in UnitedHealthCare. Their service is essentially a sham, and I intend to take this as high as I can, especially to the Attorneys General office.
I have never had a claim denied . My wife and I have had a lot of surgeries and they have been taken care of very well.
i used united health one time and they stood by me in time of my needs its agreat company to be with
Had the insurance for years. Never had any issues with claims. Every place I’ve been to takes the insurance .
I have been 100% pleased with my coverage. I have been with United Health Care over 3 years and the Service is Superb.
I had knee surgery, and this insurance saved my parents so much money! Did not owe a penny after my 25,000 dollar surgery. Just paid copays for physical therapy! Overall amazing insurance!
I wish they had better coverage for mental health help. I have been trying to find a counselor for teens. There isn’t very many counselors that are covered to get them in to see when it becomes a crisis. More coverage of counselors would be great!
I'm grateful for their large directory for healthcare providers. I appreciate getting a choice.
I like the providers I can go to but my husband and I both used to have insurance through United and they made it very difficult being double covered. It should have been extra smooth since it was the same company.
We were with United healthcare for a couple years and they did a good job of helping us manage our health care and benefit management. Customer service was always reachable and friendly.
The customer service there has been very professional. The wait time has been good
Good coverage from my employer. I wish they had more providers in network. Also wish they had better coverage for mental health care (counseling, etc.).
Affordable and have taken great care of our medical needs. We have been with them several years and had no issues.
I have UnitedHeathcare and have had it for about 6 years. We have had some major medical events and UH has been very helpful and understanding when it comes to the occasional dubious claim. We almost always hit our out of pocket max and then things get a little easier, pay wise. The claims are easy to understand and if I dont understand, I can call UH and talk to a person. I take a star off because I have called and talked to someone to help me understand why a claim was denied and they gave me wrong information, repeatedly. I called back and talked to someone else and they gave me the right information. When I called back again at a later date, I talked to the first person and again they gave me the wrong information about the same claim. I fought this claim for about 3 months and was ultimately paid back every cent, but I could have done without the runaround.
The insurance is affordable and the deductible is low, but they iften slow pay the doctors. They also change my prescriptions that my doctor gives out because apparently they know better. Also forced to use cvs pharmacy to get 90 day supply because they have a "deal" with them. Reeks of collusion
I like the coverage but I pay way too much for it. the prices keep going up and up. I have this through my job. It does offer things like free gym and ways to earn "dollars" and other free services and discounts but still. the price is just ..a lot.. Not as bad as other companies but still. I shouldn't have to pay so much out of pocket when using their services for dental and health care. Maybe they should try bundling their insurance since some people have more than one of their services.
The absolute worst! Senior management at this company must all be morons to allow this idiotic business practices. The customer service is like amateur hour with nothing but mentally challenged people. Even the simplest of business things are practically impossible. Senior people here sure don;t deserve their pay!!
We have had United healthcare for a previous employer. Although we understand that it is the employer the pics the benefits and not the insurance company, it seems like the insurance company always wanted to argue if they thought a procedure was necessary etc.
A great healthcare and very reasonable price for everything I love this company. Would recommend
UnitedHealthcare offers comprehensive plans and many providers that are In Network. We were covered during a pregnancy, and were pleased with the coverage.
I have been a client of United Healthcare for about (5) years now. Their app is extremely easy to use - as well as having a multitude of healthcare providers to choose from. However, I am not thrilled with the fact that they are dropping many healthcare providers because UH is refusing to negotiate their rates. I am in danger of losing not only my primary caregiver, but also my gynecologist, because of their refusal to compensate their providers fairly. Come on UH. If you drop my providers, I will be dropping you also.
They have incentives to be healthy. They have been pretty seamless to use the insurance.
I like United Health Care because it fits us better than any other health insurance. They are cheaper than the other health insurance but that doesn't mean they are bad. They have actually been very good to my family. The rates for prescription and health insurance is better than what I was paying for with other companies. They have co-pays that are very compatible to other companies.

I love my benefits from United healthcare I also get medical supplies at no cost
Ong what is this in network but not tier 1. The difference is paying an office visit copay or having your entire visit go to your deductible and you unexpectedly get a bill from your provider. Only uhc understands this stuff and doctors think they're sitting pretty until you inform them that they are not. My pcp comes up at the top of the in network provider list whether I filter for tier 1 doctor or not, but she is not tuer 1. Ironically the only one in her practice who is not, but the most highly rated on their site. I'm appealing the claim. Even the insurance department and credentialing staff had no clue what I was talking about and they were just as surprised as I. Check your provider carefully, as for me I want to go #back2bcbs!
UHC gives prompt friendly service, would recommendto anyone, happy with my benefit
Good care if you could find a doctor that was on the list to go to.. sometimes they denied charge which I thought were covered. Some of their reasoning didn’t make sense to me. They would wear you down until you just ended up paying the bill to get it to stop.
Insurance coverage was good and they paid the claims quickly when submitted. I never had any issues with them.
We have been with UHC for 4 years with our company and I have been extremely impressed with their service and handling of claims. Customer service and sales are very efficient and easy to work with.
United Healthcare paid my claims in a timely manner and were contracted with my doctors and hospitals.
My family has had UnitedHealthcare for years. They have been easy to work with for the most part.
I have had this health insurance for the past 4 years. They offer good rates on healthcare and prescription drugs .
They paid our claims in a timely manner. There isn't anything I dislike. They sent me helpful catalogs and products quickly.
I have them now and am very pleased with them. They seem very concerned with me generally.
I liked united healthcare in Utah because it seems like INtermountain Healthcare accepted them and Mountain star accepts them
We've used United for years and they've always done a good job with our insurance needs! My daughter's Pediatrician had a hard time finding our coverage and the customer service team jumped on the phone with them immediately and got me all taken care of. I definitely appreciate the personal touch they give!
We've had UnitedHealthcare insurance for a long time now and have been really happy with the coverage and customer service. We unfortunately had a terrible experience with a hospital and the customer service rep was so patient and helpful with working to get things figured out.
We've been pleased with the service that UHC provides. We use the HDP which works fine. All of our claims are processed quickly, and the app is intuitive. User friendly, and even allows me to sync my HSA account to it. I can also use my app to see and present my insurance card.
