While the company started as a small family business in the 1930s, CenturyLink has eventually become a household name in the ISP industry.
CenturyLink has a history of acquiring other companies to increase its nationwide reach. These expansion efforts led CenturyLink to become the third largest telecommunications company in the United States. It serves all 50 states with its extensive fiber-optic internet networks and DSL service.
CenturyLink offers Price for Life plans that don't have a contract and boast download speeds as high as 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps). Customers can choose plans that have a data cap of 300 GB or plans with unlimited data.
Recently, CenturyLink has expanded even further to offer entertainment like Century Prism and DirecTV service. If you're interested in purchasing phone or TV service in addition to internet, you can bundle services to save money.
CenturyLink strives for great customer service to help each of its customers have a unique, positive experience.
CenturyLink offers a wide range of internet speeds for its customers. These speeds are specific to an exact location and vary depending on the area, but they are typically among the higher speeds in the industry. In some areas, customers can have a download speed of up to 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps) in major cities with fiber-optic availability. This top possible speed is one of the fastest internet speeds available on the market, especially compared to the available speeds from other broadband providers.
Upload speeds range between 256 kbps and 5 Mbps. If you need a high-speed internet connection, check with CenturyLink customer service to see what is available in your zip code.
Like most ISPs, CenturyLink offers packages based on speed. You can determine what works for you based on the devices you'll use and the number of people in your household.
If you sign up for internet service online, CenturyLink offers four plans that don't require a contract in most states. The rates for these plans won't rise if you keep the plan without making any changes (like an address change):
You probably won’t need a contract, because CenturyLink can typically offer its packages on a month-to-month basis. You don't need to worry about pricing increases, an early termination fee, or rate changes.
CenturyLink provides reliable internet for a home Wi-Fi network. The company also offers good internet security and backup services with its internet packages through Norton by Symantec.
Making payments each month for internet is easy to do through an online CenturyLink user account.
You may have to watch out for CenturyLink's data caps; it's something that a few CenturyLink customers complain about.
CenturyLink sets limits for how much of the internet its customers can use in any given month, which is 1 TB. This is a generous amount of data, so most customers won't surpass it. Internet service providers do this to try to control the available speeds for all of their customers and make sure the system functions properly, but it can be a drawback if you use up a lot of data.
CenturyLink customers who exceed their data limits will not be required to pay an overage charge. If you eat up too much data, you'll receive a notice. CenturyLink might slow your service down.
The company offers 24/7 technical support, which is very convenient. If a customer is not satisfied with the services they receive from CenturyLink, they are protected with a thirty-day, money-back guarantee.
Be aware that some customers complain of poor customer support. Reviewers note that phone communication with CenturyLink takes a long time, and technician visits are sometimes missed and rescheduled. This is a frequent complaint in the ISP industry. Test out your commununication with a customer service rep through your preferred method of contact to get an idea of the average wait time and quality of response.
Not all of CenturyLink’s plan options and speeds may be available in your area. Fiber is typically available in select urban locations.
It is easy to view plans that are available in your area on CenturyLink’s website. Rural areas are more likely to have access to DSL service and slower speeds.
The CenturyLink Price for Life guarantee isn't available in all 50 states. Check to see if CenturyLink allows a package with a Price for Life guarantee in your area.
CenturyLink charges additional fees for the following:
The modem one-time purchase cost varies but is no higher than $150. Be sure to ask what the cost would be to you if you purchased it one-time versus paying an extra $10 monthly rental fee.
Some areas may have an option for self-installation, which is free.
If your plan with CenturyLink is based on a contract agreement, then you may be subject to an early termination fee if you end the contract early.
Customers complain about a variety of issues with CenturyLink, including poor customer service, connection issues, and connection speeds lower than their advertised plans. Be aware that most internet providers have similar complaints.

Very dissatisfied with this service. Cheaper than others but worse service. Customer service was terrible as well. I had many bad experiences. We changed and will never go back.
Good prices for internet and I rarely have issues with the connection.
I think the service is too expensive for internet
Les And Karen Duncan
We have had CenturyLink for about 8 yrs now and don't have any trouble ever with it.
We never have internet connection issues, nor slowness
never any buffering internet does not go down Several devices used at same time
Century LInk is extremely EXPENSIVE, they charge for everything including many charges that just seem to be added to pad the bill
CenturyLink has great service for a cheaper price than most competitors. They just implemented a "price for life" product that I like.
Found a great price with centurylink and have been with them ever since. They don't seem to want to stack hidden fees onto your bill. Very trustworthy company. Good price too.
They always seem to be pricy and the internet is ok

I switched to CenturyLink after having a bad experience with a previous provider and I have loved it ever since. They don't have mystery fees and they don't try to get you to buy a bunch of other stuff to raise their prices. They are a very trustworthy company and that is what I needed!
Warren C Whitehead
Their top speed is very slow. They keep increasing the price.
Fickle slow service slow at peak hours and in weather events
They get the job done that is the most important thing. I just wish they had the internet speed that I wanted in the area that I live in.
Service is great and so is their customer service
The service is not reliable made numerous calls to the customer service operator to have my service restored.
WiFi keeps going down several times a day and you have to reset the WiFi box for it to come back
Great internet service, terrible customer service - big surprise.
They sent me an incorrect bill every month and it took me more than an hour on the phone each time to straighten it out.
Bad service, and phone service, and service callers, wait time on the phone is way too long.
Marisa Dalla Valle
high cost /slow speed, we in my area have no choices for other service
I had to have the box changed three times in four months before service was adequate. In spite of this service
Mediocre service, quality, speed, and customer service.
The only thing good about CenturyLink is that their price is low and you get plenty of GBs of data. Otherwise, they are horrible to work with, customer service will tell you one thing, and then when it doesn't happen they say that they can't really do what they said they could do.
i would say the service is bad but sometimes especially in the evening it freezes up. During the day I work from home and never really have any problems. But you ca definitely tell the difference in the evening. I could possibly pay more but I don't want too. My husband and daughter complain a lot though.
Because no company is perfect, and when you deal over the phone customer service say what they think instead what customer want.
Overall they are a good company. I had difficulties when I first moved in, but after three different connectors being used, I have had no additional problems
When disconnecting it is a very big hassle.
They were quick to change my service and guide me through any problems when I moved. After being with them several years, they offered me a discount just for staying a loyal customer.
Stay clear of these criminals. I shut off my service (which was a HUGE pain in itself), paid my final bill, and due to a mistake on their representative's part, they charged me for another month of service that I didn't even use. I called to have this mistake removed from my closed account 3 different times, where they said it would be removed, and to let it go through a few payment cycles. The last straw was receiving a notice that they were sending the balance to collections if I didn't pay. Please stop giving your business to this company, they need to be shut down ASAP.
piss poor service and sorry repair service and responce times... months!!
The internet is slow, freezes, and is very unpredictable.
Slow speeds and antiquated infrastructure
No service when it rains (or is cloudy); inconsistent customer service
Very few problems after ten years...great customer service, very capable and pleasant employees.
Long wait for customer service, very low speeds, 3rd class company, unreliable internet, high prices.
It is fine for now as The Villages is expanding very quickly
frequent problems with email. web page not user friendly.
Interruptions in service. Misleading pricing and foreign customer service, and I have 10 years of worldwide call center experience
Five Oaks Vineyard
Very slow at times. Equipment requires reset too often.
service is not all that good the speed slows down than it says page can't be displayed
very helpful with my computer when i have an issue
They have provided reliable service with minimal interuptions

Do not get centurylink. This is absolutely the worst company on our planet. Their customer service is at best pathetic. If you have a question, you will get transferred so many times until you give up. If you have a complaint, they will just just hang up on you. Their service is slow, the equipment is sub-standard and cheap. When you return equipment, months later they will sent your account to collections as punishment. The one star rating is because there is nothing lower on here!
My service is stable until any upgrade then a 3-4 waltz of agonizing frustration with their inept, incompetent and clueless customer service system begins.
Bad customer service, and even though I am paying for higher speeds, it's consistently about 3 Mps. No one is willing to help or address it. The answer is always, "Restart the modem"
David and Lela Rice
I have nothing but trouble with my internet connection.
Good service and prices are pretty fair for products provided
Because the have slow intermittent service. With ancient wiring that needs updating
Lots of outages, inconsistent service. Customer service is very spotty and frequently either vague or dishonest..
