Customer Review: Kimberly from Hurlock, Maryland

"United Health Care is definitely my choice for health care. All bills are quickly and competently dealt with. In addition, when I have called for more information or to check the status of a medical provider, United Health Care has always had excellent customer service. The representatives are intelligent, extremely polite and very anxious to help. Their attitudes are very positive and cheerful. They are one of the best companies in any area that I have ever had the pleasure to turn to."

UnitedHealthcare has received many postive reviews on BestCompany.com. These reviewers mention satisfaction with the claims process, provider network, and coverage.

Coverage Options

UnitedHealthcare has more specified insurance policies as well, including short-term health insurance and supplemental hospital and doctor insurance plans. These options have different specifications regarding out-of-pocket costs (coinsurance or copayment), deductibles, network coverage, and prior authorization requirements.

Common network structures are Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). An HMO plan only offers coverage for care from in-network doctors. A PPO plan offers coverage in- and out-of-network coverage, which gives you more flexibility when choosing a doctor.

You'll want to consider all of these plan features and costs in addition to the monthly premium when choosing a plan.

UnitedHealthcare also offers Medicare and Medicaid plans for consumers seeking Medicare or Medicaid services. It also participates in the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). UnitedHealthcare's Medicare plans include Advantage plans and prescription drug plans. Individuals seeking a Medicare supplement plan (Medigap) can also find one from UnitedHealthcare.

Original Medicare is not available through any private insurer because it is managed by the government. A Medicare Advantage plan covers the same medical services that Original Medicare does. Most Advantage plans also include qualifying prescription drug coverage, which means you don't need to buy additional coverage.

Plan offerings vary by state. Specific information regarding available plans, premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses can be found on the UnitedHealthcare's Medicare site.

Some of the plans at UnitedHealthcare are open-access, and others are in-network only plans. In-network only plans cover patient care received from professionals UnitedHealthcare has contracted with. If your preferred provider is out-of-network, you'll pay the full cost yourself.

When considering a health plan it's important to look at the covered services, premium rates, and out-of-pocket expenses to make sure that you find an insurance policy that meets your needs.

Because the cost of a health plan varies based on several factors, including the number of people insured and the kind of policy chosen, those interested in a UnitedHealthcare health policy should research plans on its website to understand more about how much you'll pay for medical services with different plans.

Common health insurance plan network structures include Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). HMO plans only offer coverage for care received by network providers. PPO plans offer more flexibility because they offer coverage for out-of-network care. Often, in-network service has lower out-of-pocket costs than out-of-network service. You can get the most value out of your health plan by visiting in-network doctors. This will help keep your medical bills lower.

The dental and vision coverage at UnitedHealthcare is also good. The company has websites dedicated to both dental and vision insurance. For dental coverage, there are employer-sponsored plans, individual, and family plans.

These are great resources for individuals buying insurance and employers seeking to offer good health benefits to employees.

As far as individual and family plans work, preventative care is generally covered fully without a deductible or waiting period. The cost-sharing for other kinds of dental work varies by plan. Dental benefits differ for every state, but even if the dentist you want to see is out of UnitedHealthcare's network, it has some plan options for you still.

Vision insurance typically includes 100 percent coverage for an eye exam, glasses, and frames, including an option to add a scratch-resistant surface to your lenses. Other benefits depend on the individual plan.

In addition, UnitedHealthcare offers Consumer-Directed Health Plans (CDHP) options that are compatible with Health Reimbursement Accounts (HRA), Health Savings Accounts (HSA), Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).

In addition to health care insurance, UnitedHealthcare offers disability, critical illness, accident, and life insurance.

Short Term Health Plans

UnitedHealthcare offers short term health insurance to people under age 65. These plans are great if you need temporary health coverage. They offer low premiums and primarily cover preventive care and emergency services. They also cover care related to any new illness that you develop while the plan is in effect. Most of UnitedHealthcare's short term plans also cover prescriptions.

Keep in mind, however, that these plans do not cover pre-existing conditions.

Online Resources

Most healthcare insurance carriers offer their policyholders member resources. United Healthcare's member resources are not in short supply. When you enroll in a UnitedHealthcare plan, you sign up for a personal account in the online portal, myUnitedHealthcare.com. Through it, you have access to any of the following:

  • Downloadable forms
  • Tools to help you locate a network provider (primary care doctor, mental health professional, dentist, etc.)
  • ID card resources
  • Claims management (for filing a claim and checking its status)
  • A list of the prescriptions you take
  • An explanation of the benefits of your health plan
  • A tool to estimate the costs of various types of medical care with your insurance plan before you receive treatment

These tools and resources help you understand and budget money for out-of-pocket expenses (copay and coinsurance).

Even before becoming a member, customers can tour this portal and get a free quote on a health plan. There are helpful tools like a FAQs section, a list of healthcare terms to become more informed about the industry, and even a section for healthcare current news.

Support for Healthly Living

Members also benefit from other plan features, including virtual visits, or online meetings with a physician, and a 24/7 nurse hotline. These tools make it convenient to get non-emergency care and medical advice. UnitedHealthcare also offers additional support programs for health and well-being.

Source4Women is a program devoted to women's health. Rally is another health-promoting program offered. Through it, you can take a survey that will reveal your health age in relation to your actual age. From there, participants set health goals, called Missions, and have the chance to network with others trying to improve their health. You can earn rewards for healthy activities you participate in as well.

UnitedHealthcare has made a lot of unique efforts to encourage its customers to get healthy, stay healthy, and become more educated about health. These initiatives include the employer-sponsored BabyBlocks program and the Longevity Network.

The BabyBlocks program is another feature for women's health and is designed for pregnant and expecting mothers to help them get the prenatal care they need.

The Longevity Network, which UnitedHealthcare established with the AARP, helps aging customers to stay their healthiest.

Other tools that make UnitedHealthcare unique are myEasyBook, which gives members 24/7 access online to set up a doctor's appointment.

UnitedHealthcare offers a tool to help customers find a primary care physician or specialist, but it also helps customers find dentists, mental health professionals, and hospitals as well.

The mobile app provided by UnitedHealthcare is pretty unique too. Some companies have an app that just helps you locate a doctor; others provide an app that is simply a mobile view of your online account.

UnitedHealthcare's Health4Me app does these things and more. With it, you can check a claim status, speak with a nurse at any time, order a prescription refill, email your ID card, check your health records, and even save favorite medical contacts for easy access later on.

What's more, UnitedHealthcare has provided a tool called the myHealthcare Cost Estimator, which lets you see how much a medical procedure would cost with your benefits before you actually commit to having it done.

If you want to lose weight, stop smoking, get nutrition advice, or learn how to manage stress, to name just a few, UnitedHealthcare has options to save on those services as well.

Taking advantage of these additional features will help you get more out of your plan.

Customer Service

UnitedHealthcare is a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group (UHG), which has decades of experience. Backed by this insurance company, UnitedHealthcare puts an emphasis on technology and innovation. It strongly encourages both individual and societal health.

For five years in a row, Fortune named UHG one of the World's Most Admired Companies in the insurance industry. In addition, the company won a Stevie Award in 2015 for its customer service model, called Advocate4Me. All of these facts about the company add to their overall positive customer culture.

UnitedHealthcare is dedicated to helping people. To contact UnitedHealthcare, people can use phone numbers and a tool to provide feedback to the company online.

UnitedHealthcare further demonstrates its dedication to helping its members live healthier lives and have better health outcomes with its Health4Me app. The Health4Me app contributes a lot to customer service as well.

Through its 24/7 nurse hotline, its tool to refill a prescription, and its capabilities to estimate costs and check medical records, UnitedHealthcare has removed many hassles associated with health insurance logistics. The app even allows members to let customer service know they want to be contacted-making it possible to avoid being put on hold on a phone call to customer service.

The Bad

  • Negative Reviews
  • Complex Website
  • State-Specific Health Plans

Negative Reviews

Unfortunately, UnitedHealthcare has a substantial number of negative reviews. Having negative reivews is common for the industry. Reviewers who left poor ratings mentioned difficulty with communication, coverage, and claims denials.

As you read negative reviews, pay attention to where reviewers are from. Consider your situation and medical needs with what reviewers share about theirs.

If you're in a similar situation or in the same area, you may want to weigh concerns more as you make a decision. Even if you are in the same area, remember that UnitedHealthcare may offer multiple plans in your area, so you may still be able to find one that meets your needs.

Complex Website

The website is extremely detailed and informative, which is a good thing in most respects. But in some ways, it's hard to navigate.

For example, you won't find all information about vision insurance in one place; there's a website devoted to UHC vision insurance, as well as a handful of other web pages that discuss different options for vision plans. It can be frustrating to have to search in different locations for just one topic.

State-Specific Health Plans

One potential disadvantage here is that some health plans and their benefits are state-specific. UnitedHealthcare's website filters its offerings by state. It's easy to see what's available in your state when you look at health insurance options online.

You should make sure that you understand the fee schedule (premiums, copays, and coinsurance), out-of-pocket limit, how the plan covers pre-existing conditions, and prior authorization requirements that are part of your plan.

The Bottom Line

Choosing a good health insurer and finding a good insurance policy will help keep your medical expenses affordable. UnitedHealthcare is easily one of the recommended insurance companies to get health insurance from. UnitedHealthcare has lots of plans to choose from, which makes it easy to find affordable medical coverage. UnitedHealthcare offers health plans across the United States. Moving to a new state may require enrolling in a new health plan to ensure that the benefits apply.

UnitedHealthcare takes especially good care of its members, providing lots of resources. These include logistical forms, health education, discounts on health products, and several ways to contact a health professional for individual assistance.

The pros outweigh the cons with this health insurance company. Plus, UnitedHealthcare highly values quality and tries to bring convenience and ease to health insurance. We recommend working with UnitedHealthcare.

Terrible website design, terrible customer service, mostly a sham that keeps charging you money till you have to take time out of your working day to talk to multiple people about cancelling. Also, their network included Americas Best Contacts and Eyeglasses, which i regretfully ended up at, in which i was never even asked for my insurance information, got a terrible prescription, and even went back and they still couldn't find my insurance information, thanks a lot for the headaches United

Over 1/3 of the reviews of this insurance are single stars. Nearly 50% are 3 stars or fewer. Does any one at UHC care about these reviews? Your organization is a disgrace and you customer "service" a total failure. The left hand does not know what the right is doing, though I suspect that it is a tactic to stall the process and discourage callers/patients. The resources invested in trying not to renew prescriptions or issue prior authorizations is staggering, and we are paying for it. This pitiful insurance is just one window into the overall debacle represented by the American health delivery system. What will it take to bring some order in it?

They call many times to determine if there is anything they can help you with. They have become more knowledge able as to what seniors need and want. The now offer medical response items free. The offer many services either free or for a minimum feel. The call and tell me about services that I might not know about.

Unfortunately, they were the contracted group coverage company for my husbands employer for many years. I must say when we first started with them 15 years ago, they weren't as bad, but in the last 4-5 years I'm having a hard time finding anything good to say. The website is woefully misleading with wrong information at every turn. It's not updated and if you call customer service, they are anything but helpful. And there isn't enough space here to mention all the problems with Optum Rd. I gave up on them years ago.

we've had them years ago and have them again now. They seem to be fairly decent about paying on our few and far between bills. I usually only have bills for $300 - $500 to be paid by them for a year. Hubs probably the same. This year will probably be different .. our ages, we want to kinda check how our bodies are holding up. .Oh and I love the help we get with them paying some of our gym bill.. I have chronic medication and United healthy care as my primary and only health insurance provider managed to prevent the refill of my prescriptions for over 4 weeks. Countless hours of calls to inefficient and inexperienced staff and overseas call centers. Some of the calls taking more than 80minutes. At the end of each call they tell you the matter will be resolved however two days later you get another message stating that there is an issue with your refill. To date the matter is still unresolved

Absolutely awful. I have breast cancer & will be having a double mastectomy. I have just been advised that uhc doesn’t cover my prosthetic breasts or bras I will need. Every time I see my oncologist I have to pay a $70 copay & there are medications I needed while I was going through chemo to help With nausea that they declined to cover saying it wasn’t needed. This company is a bunch of crooks! Now I have to go through an appeal process to see if I can get prosthetic breasts!!! If I could give 0 stars I would. It’s disgusting how much I pay in premiums to only get screwed over. Thank uhc!!!

When I stumbled upon it they did not give my money and later they did not let me redeem it as the website was down and then date Dec 31 ran out! The co. Is a worst possible.

I recently visited Peachtree Immediate Care (an in network provider) in Fayetteville Georgia after being hit in the face during a sporting activity. It was a Sunday so my Primary Care Physicians office was closed, I figured I would go to the bottom of the priority list at the ER in addition to it being more expensive, and did not want to risk needing to have tissue debrided if I waited until Monday. I ended up needing 5 stitches, six weeks later I get a bill in the mail from Peachtree Immediate Care for $493. United Healthcare only covered a portion of the office visit and did not cover any of the cost of the stitches whatsoever. I called United Healthcare to appeal the claim and was informed that their appeals department does not have a phone number. Instead I was directed to a P.O. Box in Utah, after explaining that the bill was due in 2 days, I was finally provided with a fax number. Really? An appeals department for a major insurance company does not have a phone number? Who still owns a fax machine? At the end of the conversation, my takeaway was, sorry sir, we have paid what we are going to pay, you need to take the remainder up with Peachtree Immediate Care. Otherwise, you can mail your appeal into a black hole and maybe someone will get back to you. This is absolutely ridiculous, and makes me question why I am spending hundreds of dollars a month on health insurance when I'm going to get a $493 bill for 5 stitches anyway. Do better for the consumer United Healthcare!

I may as well not have insurance. They argue if I need a prescription. Just a back pain med, anti inflammatory. But apparently they thought I was undeserved and should have the med they wanted (one that earlier gave e hives, allergic reaction) so amid intense back pain, I had to argue for another 2 weeks. Then just a yearly exam, nope you shoudnt get a cholesterol screening, never figured why no answers there now can't get Physical Therapy, just not ready to say yes or no too much paperwork? I am a runner and not walking, no help from United without constant moaning and phoning dumping them !! We have choices! Make another one !!

December 17, 2019 I applied for insurance with United Healthcare on December 11, 2019. I spoke with Matthew G M. He suggested the Triterm Medical Plan and a Hospital Safeguard plan. You should budget for a "Medical billing advocate" if you use UHC and have any actual need for your medical insurance beyond just prescriptions and routine doctor visits. The service agents are as incompetent as possible. They appear to read from as script that is to "assure you their processing of claims" is correct. I have dealt with many different agents from UHC who seem to not only be following the same script, but trying to find inventive ways of assuring you their processing is correct. In one case I used their online portal to dispute a double charge for the same service. The agent replied assuring me their processing was correct and I should pay the amount. So then I called in and argued with this agent on the phone for 48 minutes who was giving me all of the reasons it must have said in her handbook as to why the claim was correct. After 48 minutes, I finally was able to get through to her. She called the provider, found that they had been double billed, payed twice on the bill, and had mistakenly expected me to pay twice on the same bill also. However, months later, the patient portal site still shows the original claims. Today I get to speak to these morons for another hour. Another time I was asking for an explanation of their processing of a medical bill that 10 months after the date of service and it had been fully paid, they decided to reprocess it with some suspect codes such as urgent care for outpatient surgery. On the third iteration, the agent copied and pasted some text from the claim that listed the medicines that were used in outpatient surgery as to why this cost so much and it had a line item of about $3,000. The line item from the hospital had charges for these medicines being about $250. Of course I provided this evidence. The next round was a different set of reasons why the billing was correct and they could not provide me the actual negotiated rates that would be required to understand the bill. UHC agents are either untrained and don't understand their job, are not given any more information than the patient portal and just follow a scripts assuring the customer everything is right, or are knowingly attempting to get the customer off of the phone and not resolve any issues. This is not the insurance for you if you need insurance.

I am a former CEO Of a relatively small financial services organization. After retiring in March of this year (2019) and joining UHC, I have literally spent more than 100 hours trying to correct errors, mistakes, and trying to get them to follow up. While the phone reps are very nice, they are basically clueless; uninformed, unknowledgeable, and unempowered. The company has multiple databases, reps do not have access to all history. Over 5 times I called and was promised call backs which never came. I finally looked up the email addresses of top executives and communicated with them directly Only then did I get follow up and resolution to their major errors. But the issues and problems continued. Different information was received from various reps. In my entire life I have never been subject to such incompetence. Astounding that they remain in business. Needless to say I am leaving them ...in favor of USAA, who handles their own claims and had the highest client service rating in the financial services industry. Yes they are endorsed by AARP, but I’m guessing that is because AARP gets paid by UHC.

I have been a BCBS customer for many years but our company changed insurance plans. We are now under United Healthcare. Under BCBS my screening mammogram and US were covered at 100%. I called United prior to my doctor ordering the tests and they told me they would be covered under the screening codes 76641. After the tests, I now have approx $1000 they are not covering!!

Do not trust this United Healthcare. They do not care if we suffer. They do not care if we are in pain. They only care if you pay them. I get migraines sadly a lot. The Rizatriptan pills helps so much that I don't loose work or suffer. Up until this year I could only get 12 pills a month. I could cope with that. But now I can only get 4. Yeah just 4. So suffer very much and be in pain? They have made it very clear that they could care less,.... And oh I have to pay them to do this to me. They said to contact my doctor to get him to give me more. That makes no sense at all. !2 pills a month is not many, not many at all. So why force the doctor to add more to the 4 limit. They probably will only allow him to give me 5 pills but never 12. BUT my doctor contacted them to increase my subscription. UnitedHealthCare said "NO". Obviously cruel. Plus I strongly strongly suspect that the 4 or 5 pills will cost what the 12 before did, about 150. Do not trust them, they could care less about us. They really only care about us paying them to be mean to us. Wish there were negative stars available. If my migraines take over my life. I may decide that it's time for pain to end. Thanks United Hate Care ............. United HeathCare. You've made life so bad and you probably laugh all the time. BUT you can trust Kiwi Drugs. They are in New Zealand and yes it takes a bit of time to ship the prescription BUT you can get what you need and not pay a ton of money as United healthcare wants.

Absolute garbage coverage. You would think that between the company and my out of pocket expenses of about $25k a year they would afford coverage. They look for any reason to not pay a claim and not afford coverage. Oh and the "Family Specialist" assigned to me Holly is by far the worst person I have ever spoken with in regards to anything. Zero empathy, zero care, not sure what her job is aside from just telling people no all day.

We have had United Healthcare insurance through our employer for many years. We had a PPO plan for many years and have had a high deductible plan in recent years. One of the biggest advantages of United Healthcare has been its large network of providers that accept it as insurance. The myUHC.com website makes it fairly straightforward to see one's insurance claims and to look up in-network providers.

The rudest people I've ever dealt with. You are NOT doctors, you deserve to be investigated. I wonder how many people have died from denials because this company wants to play GOD, and tells the doctors what they can and can't do. I am taking this as far up as I can.

Pharmacy ran out of medication. I transferred my prescription to another pharmacy and explained what happened but United denied me medication. They said it was too soon to refill a prescription disregarding what I told them about the pharmacy across the street being out. I’m canceling my plan. This is ridiculous. You should never deny someone medication. Atleast give them some to take that day so they don’t skip a day while things get sorted out

I would avoid this insurance like the plaque. We purchased a family plan, and the first time my wife had to use it for a one night stay in the hospital for heat related symptoms, UHC cancelled her. The customer service is argumentative, and it takes a LONG time to get through all the animated dialing system when you call them, and then you sit on hold "HOURS". A one night stay at the hospital with tests cost $20,000.00! We are still fighting with customer service to provide information on what they will cover. We were told it was an 80/20 coverage policy however, to date we have paid over 50% of this one claim. Health insurance is a mess in this country, (thank you ACA), and this company will punish you for using their coverage. Now since the word heat "STROKE" has been initiated, my wife will find it very hard to get insurance now that she has a "pre-existing" condition. A terrible, terrible experience, and I fear that many will die because they are afraid to use these kind of policies for their health needs. If you use UHC, be prepared to suffer the consequences if you use it for anything other than doctors visits and wellness visits. Bad, bad experience, and a bad uncaring company.
