Customer Review: Kimberly from Hurlock, Maryland

"United Health Care is definitely my choice for health care. All bills are quickly and competently dealt with. In addition, when I have called for more information or to check the status of a medical provider, United Health Care has always had excellent customer service. The representatives are intelligent, extremely polite and very anxious to help. Their attitudes are very positive and cheerful. They are one of the best companies in any area that I have ever had the pleasure to turn to."

UnitedHealthcare has received many postive reviews on BestCompany.com. These reviewers mention satisfaction with the claims process, provider network, and coverage.

Coverage Options

UnitedHealthcare has more specified insurance policies as well, including short-term health insurance and supplemental hospital and doctor insurance plans. These options have different specifications regarding out-of-pocket costs (coinsurance or copayment), deductibles, network coverage, and prior authorization requirements.

Common network structures are Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). An HMO plan only offers coverage for care from in-network doctors. A PPO plan offers coverage in- and out-of-network coverage, which gives you more flexibility when choosing a doctor.

You'll want to consider all of these plan features and costs in addition to the monthly premium when choosing a plan.

UnitedHealthcare also offers Medicare and Medicaid plans for consumers seeking Medicare or Medicaid services. It also participates in the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). UnitedHealthcare's Medicare plans include Advantage plans and prescription drug plans. Individuals seeking a Medicare supplement plan (Medigap) can also find one from UnitedHealthcare.

Original Medicare is not available through any private insurer because it is managed by the government. A Medicare Advantage plan covers the same medical services that Original Medicare does. Most Advantage plans also include qualifying prescription drug coverage, which means you don't need to buy additional coverage.

Plan offerings vary by state. Specific information regarding available plans, premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses can be found on the UnitedHealthcare's Medicare site.

Some of the plans at UnitedHealthcare are open-access, and others are in-network only plans. In-network only plans cover patient care received from professionals UnitedHealthcare has contracted with. If your preferred provider is out-of-network, you'll pay the full cost yourself.

When considering a health plan it's important to look at the covered services, premium rates, and out-of-pocket expenses to make sure that you find an insurance policy that meets your needs.

Because the cost of a health plan varies based on several factors, including the number of people insured and the kind of policy chosen, those interested in a UnitedHealthcare health policy should research plans on its website to understand more about how much you'll pay for medical services with different plans.

Common health insurance plan network structures include Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). HMO plans only offer coverage for care received by network providers. PPO plans offer more flexibility because they offer coverage for out-of-network care. Often, in-network service has lower out-of-pocket costs than out-of-network service. You can get the most value out of your health plan by visiting in-network doctors. This will help keep your medical bills lower.

The dental and vision coverage at UnitedHealthcare is also good. The company has websites dedicated to both dental and vision insurance. For dental coverage, there are employer-sponsored plans, individual, and family plans.

These are great resources for individuals buying insurance and employers seeking to offer good health benefits to employees.

As far as individual and family plans work, preventative care is generally covered fully without a deductible or waiting period. The cost-sharing for other kinds of dental work varies by plan. Dental benefits differ for every state, but even if the dentist you want to see is out of UnitedHealthcare's network, it has some plan options for you still.

Vision insurance typically includes 100 percent coverage for an eye exam, glasses, and frames, including an option to add a scratch-resistant surface to your lenses. Other benefits depend on the individual plan.

In addition, UnitedHealthcare offers Consumer-Directed Health Plans (CDHP) options that are compatible with Health Reimbursement Accounts (HRA), Health Savings Accounts (HSA), Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).

In addition to health care insurance, UnitedHealthcare offers disability, critical illness, accident, and life insurance.

Short Term Health Plans

UnitedHealthcare offers short term health insurance to people under age 65. These plans are great if you need temporary health coverage. They offer low premiums and primarily cover preventive care and emergency services. They also cover care related to any new illness that you develop while the plan is in effect. Most of UnitedHealthcare's short term plans also cover prescriptions.

Keep in mind, however, that these plans do not cover pre-existing conditions.

Online Resources

Most healthcare insurance carriers offer their policyholders member resources. United Healthcare's member resources are not in short supply. When you enroll in a UnitedHealthcare plan, you sign up for a personal account in the online portal, myUnitedHealthcare.com. Through it, you have access to any of the following:

  • Downloadable forms
  • Tools to help you locate a network provider (primary care doctor, mental health professional, dentist, etc.)
  • ID card resources
  • Claims management (for filing a claim and checking its status)
  • A list of the prescriptions you take
  • An explanation of the benefits of your health plan
  • A tool to estimate the costs of various types of medical care with your insurance plan before you receive treatment

These tools and resources help you understand and budget money for out-of-pocket expenses (copay and coinsurance).

Even before becoming a member, customers can tour this portal and get a free quote on a health plan. There are helpful tools like a FAQs section, a list of healthcare terms to become more informed about the industry, and even a section for healthcare current news.

Support for Healthly Living

Members also benefit from other plan features, including virtual visits, or online meetings with a physician, and a 24/7 nurse hotline. These tools make it convenient to get non-emergency care and medical advice. UnitedHealthcare also offers additional support programs for health and well-being.

Source4Women is a program devoted to women's health. Rally is another health-promoting program offered. Through it, you can take a survey that will reveal your health age in relation to your actual age. From there, participants set health goals, called Missions, and have the chance to network with others trying to improve their health. You can earn rewards for healthy activities you participate in as well.

UnitedHealthcare has made a lot of unique efforts to encourage its customers to get healthy, stay healthy, and become more educated about health. These initiatives include the employer-sponsored BabyBlocks program and the Longevity Network.

The BabyBlocks program is another feature for women's health and is designed for pregnant and expecting mothers to help them get the prenatal care they need.

The Longevity Network, which UnitedHealthcare established with the AARP, helps aging customers to stay their healthiest.

Other tools that make UnitedHealthcare unique are myEasyBook, which gives members 24/7 access online to set up a doctor's appointment.

UnitedHealthcare offers a tool to help customers find a primary care physician or specialist, but it also helps customers find dentists, mental health professionals, and hospitals as well.

The mobile app provided by UnitedHealthcare is pretty unique too. Some companies have an app that just helps you locate a doctor; others provide an app that is simply a mobile view of your online account.

UnitedHealthcare's Health4Me app does these things and more. With it, you can check a claim status, speak with a nurse at any time, order a prescription refill, email your ID card, check your health records, and even save favorite medical contacts for easy access later on.

What's more, UnitedHealthcare has provided a tool called the myHealthcare Cost Estimator, which lets you see how much a medical procedure would cost with your benefits before you actually commit to having it done.

If you want to lose weight, stop smoking, get nutrition advice, or learn how to manage stress, to name just a few, UnitedHealthcare has options to save on those services as well.

Taking advantage of these additional features will help you get more out of your plan.

Customer Service

UnitedHealthcare is a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group (UHG), which has decades of experience. Backed by this insurance company, UnitedHealthcare puts an emphasis on technology and innovation. It strongly encourages both individual and societal health.

For five years in a row, Fortune named UHG one of the World's Most Admired Companies in the insurance industry. In addition, the company won a Stevie Award in 2015 for its customer service model, called Advocate4Me. All of these facts about the company add to their overall positive customer culture.

UnitedHealthcare is dedicated to helping people. To contact UnitedHealthcare, people can use phone numbers and a tool to provide feedback to the company online.

UnitedHealthcare further demonstrates its dedication to helping its members live healthier lives and have better health outcomes with its Health4Me app. The Health4Me app contributes a lot to customer service as well.

Through its 24/7 nurse hotline, its tool to refill a prescription, and its capabilities to estimate costs and check medical records, UnitedHealthcare has removed many hassles associated with health insurance logistics. The app even allows members to let customer service know they want to be contacted-making it possible to avoid being put on hold on a phone call to customer service.

The Bad

  • Negative Reviews
  • Complex Website
  • State-Specific Health Plans

Negative Reviews

Unfortunately, UnitedHealthcare has a substantial number of negative reviews. Having negative reivews is common for the industry. Reviewers who left poor ratings mentioned difficulty with communication, coverage, and claims denials.

As you read negative reviews, pay attention to where reviewers are from. Consider your situation and medical needs with what reviewers share about theirs.

If you're in a similar situation or in the same area, you may want to weigh concerns more as you make a decision. Even if you are in the same area, remember that UnitedHealthcare may offer multiple plans in your area, so you may still be able to find one that meets your needs.

Complex Website

The website is extremely detailed and informative, which is a good thing in most respects. But in some ways, it's hard to navigate.

For example, you won't find all information about vision insurance in one place; there's a website devoted to UHC vision insurance, as well as a handful of other web pages that discuss different options for vision plans. It can be frustrating to have to search in different locations for just one topic.

State-Specific Health Plans

One potential disadvantage here is that some health plans and their benefits are state-specific. UnitedHealthcare's website filters its offerings by state. It's easy to see what's available in your state when you look at health insurance options online.

You should make sure that you understand the fee schedule (premiums, copays, and coinsurance), out-of-pocket limit, how the plan covers pre-existing conditions, and prior authorization requirements that are part of your plan.

The Bottom Line

Choosing a good health insurer and finding a good insurance policy will help keep your medical expenses affordable. UnitedHealthcare is easily one of the recommended insurance companies to get health insurance from. UnitedHealthcare has lots of plans to choose from, which makes it easy to find affordable medical coverage. UnitedHealthcare offers health plans across the United States. Moving to a new state may require enrolling in a new health plan to ensure that the benefits apply.

UnitedHealthcare takes especially good care of its members, providing lots of resources. These include logistical forms, health education, discounts on health products, and several ways to contact a health professional for individual assistance.

The pros outweigh the cons with this health insurance company. Plus, UnitedHealthcare highly values quality and tries to bring convenience and ease to health insurance. We recommend working with UnitedHealthcare.

I have UnitedHealthcare and it has worked great for me and my family. There is a high deductable, but this supplemented through work and my HSA. They do all of the needed checkups and preventative care that I need. When I do need care, there is an extensive list of doctors available and they are easy to work with if I need to go to a specialist. The claims are easy to process, and I can track things online, even the results of my exams and visits.

Horrible! I spent extra time listing/verifying my medications with a representative to ensure I was purchasing the correct plan. After months of not being able to pick up my prescriptions, paying almost $200 a month, trying generic brands my doctor did not want me on that made me sick and waiting on additional forms and paperwork from my doctor as requested by UnitedHealthCare to ensure approval of my medications, I am told that there is no plan that covers my medications!? What a horrible, expensive, waist of time!

I have had to go back and forth for a couple years now with UHC over their prior authorization. First it is approved so I go to the pharmacy, nope it won't go through so I call why won't it go through. UHC says your doctor office messed up the PA so I call the Dr office. Then they send letters that say it is approved, great right? It would be if they had the right med and milligrams! This goes on for a month at a time all the time I am without my medication. I have gone so long I just went and paid for my script because I could not longer go without my meds. Health Care if should say United health because there is no care at United Healthcare!

United Healthcare is the worst insurance company in the world. It does not care member's health, and only care how to save money. Due to changing job, United Healthcare became my provider this year. Since then, I had been in trouble with almost every things. Firstly, doctors say that United Healthcare is very difficulty to deal with, and so they don't like to accept new patients with United Healthcare as a provider. Secondly almost everything need prior approval, and it take you a very long time to wait for this process. I had taken a medication for treating HBV for over two years, and my previous insurance covered it without any problem, but United healthcare denied the claim for this medication, and requested my doctor to replace it with a cheaper one, which made me have no medication to take for over a month. I have to change my job again because I want to find an employer providing healthcare with a company other than United Healthcare.

As long don't have an HSA or need any help, it's probably fine. Online access is terrible and you have to call for assistance. I'm currently waiting for my eligible medical expense to be taxed because I can't provide "acceptable" proof of eligibility, and I don't have hours to spend to get this resolved for something that is fault of my own.

I am so upset. I had Anthem bcbs for many years through my employer. July 1,2019, my insurance co. changed to United healthcare. I am having a vein procedure done soon, that Anthem was going to cover. United healthcare denied the claim, saying it is not serious enough. Now I have to pay 4,000 for s necessary procedure.

My husband has been severely discriminated against by this company because he is and immigrant. His insurance was cancelled because as they claim “there was a change in his immigration status”. He has been a permanent resident for five years and has a green card that expires in another five. Not to mention his citizenship is being awarded this year. While a representative and a supervisor were both repeatedly asked for proof of this and evidence of this so called change, hey would not provide it. I will be filing a formal complaint with the BBB and a discrimination suit against United Healthcare. I am appalled that an American corporation that provides health insurance can engage in blatant discrimination against immigrants.

I thought it was a good insurance company until my son needed a surgery my Dr said they are the hardest to get approvals for surgery. I still thought we would be good but we now are going into the second summer of trying and fighting to get this surgery my son(16) needs before he turns 18 and his condition gets worse. It already causes him pain but United healthcare considers it a cosmetic surgery. When my son has a dent in his chest so big my fist fits in it that's not cosmetic it causes pain when breathing and doing activities. So I advice if you have a choice don't use united health care.

AARP and United healthcare don’t care about their clients. They just care about making a profit even if it means cutting off the free gym membership they offered under Silver Sneakers. The benefits of Silver Sneakers helps so many seniors stay healthy, and now by cutting the coverage, seniors, will slowly go downhill. I am dumping AARP and United healthcare and going with Humana. Same coverage similar price and they pay for the full silver sneakers membership. I sure hope this move backfires on you AARP. !

The absolute most incompetent workers and unorganized system I've ever encountered in customer service. Spent literally a year calling back to get a simple reimbursement because every time I called and even provided reference numbers, they seemed to have no record of my case. I would re-explain it EVERY SINGLE TIME... the amount of transferring calls was also ridiculous. I’ve just enrolled in United Health Care. The bottom line here is, they don’t care about my health at all. They only care about how much money they are saving the company. I’m allergic to some of the cheaper generics for diabetic medication that they only approve. They only want to approve the cheaper brands. But at the same time, they approve some name brands that have world wide class action suits. It takes their office forever to approve prior authorization and it always end up in a denial. My doctor and my pharmacist are having a difficult time getting anyone to cooperate. For this past week alone, I’ve gone through 4 different prescriptions that are listed on their drug list coverage, to be only denied and suggested a cheaper brand. Also, they go the cheap route by not given you the requested doctor prescribed dosage only approve the lower dosage to save them money. Thus, putting my health at risk. They don’t care about if I need life saving medications nor care that I am at the brink of becoming critically crippled by diabetes. They should be exposed for their heartless and I unethical tactics. They give my pharmacist and doctor the runaround hoping they just give up and try the cheaper brands they will only pay for. This insurance company doesn’t give one flip about your health. They care only for their increase in profits and stakeholders than their consumers.

I guess i am still miffed with how expensive healthcare has become in the United States. I pay over $800 for myself and my newborn per month. That's a huge chunk of my paycheck! That being said, i have had a good experience with United this year. Thankfully they covered a large portion of the hospital expenses for the birth of our baby. We will certainly hit our out of pocket max this year.

United Healthcare is what I have right now. I like that they try and do preventative care and take care of that for me. It is easy to find an in network doctor and I also like the online access to the results. easy to use my HSA with it as well.

Pharmaceutical & Preauthorization’s Takes your Premiums & Kick you right in the Berries. I have never had so much frustration from an insurance company trying to get my medications, the preauthorization process which has already taken 4 weeks because they continually request one more thing from the doctors over & over. Then after you have the preauthorization’s & go to fill your medications they deny the preauthorization number that they just issued you & tell you that they need to reevaluate the previous authorizations as a whole & your doctor now needs to make a direct call & provide the same information in order for United to issue a new preauthorization for the already preauthorized medications; have I lost you yet? Ya me too, as well as my Doctor being frustrated with United (they are now evaluating whether to accept new patents covered through United due to this garbage), my Pharmacy has had it with them, all have said they have never had so much problem with an insurance company. We are now going on two months in this review process for medications that I have been on for 10 years, something is wrong with their system. I don’t have enemies but you know how they say “I would not wish them on my worst enemy” I would have to wish them on themselves. I was once on Medicaid & in my humble option these guys are 10 times worse, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THEM & would advise you to RUN THE OTHER WAY!!! JR Giles

AVOID IT COMPLETELY. This was my first time getting healthcare alone and being off of my parent's or employers plan. I was previously with Blue Cross Blue Shield where they broke down everything for me and really educated me on my benefits. I took that information when I changed jobs to United and was told I was getting the equivalent of what I previously had. My biggest concern that I said up front was that I wanted my prescriptions covered and they told me yes that's what you're getting . WRONG. I did my best reading through my contract before signing, but I'm in my early 20's and it was a bit confusing as all insurance is. I asked the representative questions about it and she transferred me to someone who could barely answer my questions. No one seemed educated on what was being provided and assured me on each question of what I was signing up for. I sign up and then weeks later go to the pharmacy where all of a sudden 3 month of my prescription is $500. I give them my insurance card which doesn't have a BIN or GROUP number so I called United. Their automated system provided this info so I go back to the pharmacist and this info doesn't work and I don't have an authorization number. I call again to speak to a rep and she gives me an entirely different BIN and GROUP with authorization number and I asked her why is this info different than the automation and she couldn't give me an answer. I go to the pharmacist with this new info and it is info for a Discount Card, not a Pharmacy Card. I'm livid. I've been at the pharmacy for 2 hours now. I call back again to figure this out and the rep tells me I didn't sign up for a Pharmacy card in which I assure her I did and the broker told me that is what I was getting. I also ask AGAIN why does the automated system provide a different GROUP and BIN number than the Discount Card anyways and she can't give me an answer and told me if I didn't like it I can cancel my plan. I walked away with only one month of my prescription instead of 3 and they had a little discount for me so it was $93. I attempted a reimbursement since they mislead me and gave me false information just for the difference because I ended up finding a coupon code after the fact so I can receive my prescription for $37 a month, reminder my previous insurance covered the cost entirely. The representative was unapologetic, rude and still wouldn't address the misleading broker or the conflicting automation I receive every time I call. United isn't interested in helping or educating their customers. They won't address any wrong doing, won't give answers or provide necessary information to understand what I have. Luckily I'm getting married soon so I can cancel altogether and go back to Blue Cross.

They are horrible. They process thing appointments and lab work stating that they aren’t covered in network and have state they wrong the wrong “tax ID #” I went through hoops to try and get it fixed. I even had a representative from the hospital on hold to get the # updated and all they could say was “it’s not processing correctly on our end.” They’re great at making you feel like they’re trying to get things resolved and not doing anything about problems that they create.

The coverage has been good. The claims process has been a nightmare. I tried to pay through their portal and the provider never gets it, I get double billed, I get my portion paid from HSA listed as insurance portion, I can't get a statement easily (kicks me off HSA site), and list of claims is a mess. I had Cigna before with almost same coverage, and paid bills as I got them. Easy peasy. UHC is an administrative nightmare.

United Healthcare (UHC) has unfortunately been my provider through work for 3 years. I suffer from chronic dry eye and have been on a prescription for 3 years. This year they decided to increase the copay astronomically and have denied my appeal for coverage twice. I have called multiple times to find out if there is anything I can do and was told this time by Michelle, a supervisor, to Google it. Needless to say, I will have to go to an India-based pharmacy to fill this prescription as UHC refuses to fill it at a price that any reasonable person could afford. It is eyedrops for Gods sake!!!!!!! UHC is filled with CROOKS and is only in it for money. I really hope I don't get really sick because my family and I would be screwed. DO NOT USE UHC! TERRIBLE COVERAGE, TERRIBLE SERVICE, TERRIBLE ORGANIZATION!!!!!!!!!

I have PPO insurance with UHC and its the worst insurance I have ever had. They have very onerous policies and find any way to possible to deny payment of treatment or reduce payment. They are misleading in their definitions within their plans so you find out things are covered way differently than originally thought. They are unreasonable in coverage of pharmacy medications as well.

United Healthcare customer service is terrible. You talk to machine that transfers you to more machines and then it will hang-up on you If you’re lucky enough to push the right Button you might get a person to talk to that will transfer you back to a machine that will hang-up on you. I’m sure its not the people working there it’s the company police. The people at the top don’t wont to answer questions.

United Healthcare is the worst insurance I have ever come across they refuse to pay claims because the Scott & White Health Centers which are scattered all over in stand-alone buildings because those bills say outpatient Scott & White outpatient hospital because it has Hospital on there they refuse to pay it on a deductible or where tests are covered 100% we had a test that was supposed to be covered 100% and because it said outpatient hospital United Healthcare refuses to cover it so it's going to cost us $900 not all only that but with doctor's visits were the copay is 35 or $50 because where the bill comes from says Baylor Scott & White outpatient hospital they refuse to pay them I give United Healthcare zero Stars absolutely the worst Insurance you can buy. This review made me give United Healthcare one star it wouldn't let me give it a zero.

If you have any choice whatsoever do not choose this insurance! They are heartless, this is not about good healthcare, this is about a huge moneymaker. I, like many others do not have a choice but if you do, do your research and look at the reviews. The last conversation I had with them was pathetic and I told them "you are doing a better job killing me than helping me". Do your research and good luck.

Automatically OPT into this Healthcare through my employer East Side Medical Center, Snellville, Ga. Unaware I was even paying for the healthcare, because I never checked my wage statement. My fault, for not having a need for the money and not checking. After 8 months I heard of other employee's being Opt into benefits they didn't want and decided to check my statement to only find out I was paying for healthcare. Thought It would be a simple fix, but apparently this company enjoys robbing me without a gun. Company reviewed my case and stated you can only Opt out during the open/close season. I'm a retired military veteran with disabilities and I've had healthcare since I was 18, but that not good enough. If unable to find legal help I will have paid this company close to $2800 before I can Opt out. Only in America can you serve your country and still get treated like this way. Never will I or anyone and my immediately family be affiliated with this company. -No stars from me-

DO NOT ENROLL IN UHC IF YOU LIVE IN MA AND ARE PLANNING TO HAVE KIDS. They are a total scam. They claim to provide breastfeeding support (Lactation consultation) to newborns but do not have anyone licensed within 50 miles of Boston. Imagine having to drive to CT to get Lactation support when you are not in a good physical health. We spoke to a ton of customer service reps at UHC about getting Lactation help, but no one there seems to care or put you on hold for few hours and then later lie about the status of your case. They do not follow up with your requests either. It’s been over 5 days and a few hours on phone everyday, but our issue hasn’t been resolved. Please choose other service provider if you care about your baby’s health.

United will gladly take over $600 per month for a mediocre plan but first thing that happens when I actually need to go to the hospital is I get a letter from them saying they’re going to deny my claims because they think someone else should pay for my health care costs. I had Aetna for a long time and never had an issue. United is just a scam that’s been going long enough to have a call center.
