LAST UPDATED: March 25th, 2022

Founded in Rapid City, South Dakota in 2003, GenPro Energy Solutions has since become one of the largest energy efficiency distributors in the Midwest. In addition to residential solar solutions, the company conducts commercial, municipal, and community solar projects in four states, as well as several energy-related projects across the nation.

The solar installer has earned Solar Power World's "Top 500 Solar Contractors" award every year since 2015 for its commercial solar services, cracking the top 150 list in 2018, 2019, and 2020. The company is growing fast, with 2019 accounting for more than a third of GenPro's all-time installations. GenPro also secured a $2.5 million investment from private equity firm South Dakota Equity Partners in February 2020 as part of its ongoing effort to provide clean energy to underserved communities.

The Good

  • Strong Community Focus
  • Range of Solar Solutions
  • Quality Equipment
  • Full-Service Provider

Strong Community Focus

GenPro offers a number of community-focused programs that maximize access to solar energy at a minimum investment. Through the company’s SunWise℠ program, solar customers in participating communities may purchase solar energy without having to install a solar system on their home or business. This program drastically reduces the upfront costs associated with traditional solar panel systems by eliminating maintenance and installation fees, and extends the benefits of solar energy to areas and residents who can neither afford nor accommodate a solar panel system of their own.

GenPro also provides custom solutions at the municipal and commercial levels, partnering with cities, schools, farmers, and hospitals interested in offsetting their electricity costs with renewable energy. The company has likewise empowered some of the Midwest’s indigenous communities by training members on solar panel installation and maintenance.

Range of Solar Solutions

With an array of robust solar energy solutions, GenPro is ready and able to design the best system to suit your family or community needs:

  • Grid-tie solar systems — offsets your electricity costs by connecting your solar system to the power grid through an inverter. Any unused energy your system produces is fed back into the grid and results in an energy credit from the utility company.
  • Grid-interactive solar systems — essentially functions as a back-up generator in the event of a power outage. Grid-interactive systems allow users to store energy for self-consumption at no additional cost.
  • Off-grid solar systems — best for rural areas where access to a utility grid is too expensive. Solar panels store their energy in battery terminals that power the electrical functions of the home.

All of these systems can be installed on the ground or mounted to a roof depending on system requirements and space limitations.

Quality Equipment

GenPro employs a variety of high-quality solar panels and solar inverters into their systems. From an array of both monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar modules to a series of reliable string and micro inverters, the company is well equipped to match the specifications of every project their team undertakes:

Solar Panels Solar Inverters
  • Trina 330W
  • Sun7Solar 190W
  • BlueSun 320W and 400W
  • CSUN 320-72P
  • SunEdison 265W
  • Helios 195WP
  • Enphase IQ7 and 7+
  • APSystems QS1 Micro Inverter
  • APSystems YC1000-3 Micro Inverter
  • Sol-Ark 12kW Hybrid Inverter
  • Sol-Ark 8kW Hybrid Inverter

Full-Service Provider

GenPro markets itself as a "one-stop-shop" for solar customers; the company consults for, designs, engineers, installs, and provides support on each solar project. It does not partner with subcontractors, but rather employs its own specialists to ensure quality control across the entire installation process. Each member of the GenPro team is NABCEP-, ASES- and SEI-certified and keeps apprised of the latest solar industry and technology trends and relevant code requirements.

The Bad

  • Limited National Reach
  • Lack of Payment Options
  • Commercial and Municipal Focus

Limited National Reach

While GenPro facilitates energy projects around the world, it appears most, if not all of its residential solar installation projects are relegated to North and South Dakota, Nebraska, and locations of all the solar projects featured on the company’s site.

A search into the company’s corporate listings through third-party database OpenCorporates suggests the company has opened branches in Colorado, Arizona, and New Jersey in addition to its South Dakota and Nebraska offices; however, we can neither confirm whether the company has claimed these listings, nor whether it conducts solar-related business in any of these states.

Lack of Payment Options

While GenPro does provide its residential customers the option to fund their solar systems via a power purchase agreement (PPA) and its municipal partners to buy their systems outright, we cannot confirm whether the company offers solar loans or solar leases. The company does invite potential customers to take advantage of the Federal Solar Tax Credit on its “Residential” page; however, the site does not explicitly mention either of these payment options.

Commercial and Municipal Focus

Although GenPro has expressed commitment to helping homeowners manage their energy consumption, the company appears to dedicate the majority of its resources toward commercial and municipal projects, partnering with cities and essential organizations like hospitals and schools.

Per Solar Power World magazine, the company has consistently listed its primary market as “commercial” (though, Solar Power World is careful to disclose a company’s ability to operate across multiple markets, be they commercial or residential).

The Bottom Line

For rural and underserved communities throughout the Midwest, GenPro Energy Solutions is a great option. As one of the most established solar companies in South Dakota, GenPro has committed itself to providing low-cost and renewable energy to cities, indigenous communities, and essential businesses and help them lower their dependence on fossil fuels. The company is reputable, and employees highly trained technicians to install quality products.

Although the solar panel installer appears to primarily serve commercial and municipal markets (including community solar projects), the company does offer sufficient information concerning its residential solar panel installation efforts. The presence of an industry-certified team should indicate to homeowners that the company is qualified to handle their solar project.

Homeowners are encouraged to read verified GenPro Energy Solutions reviews and compare their findings to top solar companies in their area.
