When choosing a home security system, two prominent providers to consider are ADT and SimpliSafe, both offering distinct approaches to protecting your home. ADT has built its reputation over 150 years, providing professionally installed systems, extensive home automation features, and 24/7 professional monitoring. On the other hand, SimpliSafe is a newer player in the market, offering a modern, do-it-yourself (DIY) approach to home security, with no long-term contracts, affordable monitoring, and flexible installation options.
While both companies are committed to ensuring the safety and security of your home, they cater to different needs and preferences. ADT may appeal to homeowners who want a full-service, hands-off solution with robust automation capabilities, while SimpliSafe is ideal for budget-conscious individuals looking for a simpler, customizable option. This comparison will help you weigh the benefits and drawbacks of each provider so you can find the perfect match for your home security needs.

Great customer service! When I called them to cancel service because I was unemployed, they worked out a payment for me. Thank you ADT for your world class service. I have peace of mind and feel safe.

You get what you pay for. Its Simply Safe. Name says it all. I have set the alarm off by accident a few times over the years. I had the panic button on silent and the cat sat on it had the cops show up quickly. (Don't do silent anymore). Whenever I have forgot it was armed, I got fast response from monitoring service to cancel. It does what it claims, is cheap, and I feel SAFE.

Until today, I have had positive experiences with SS. I woke up this morning and found that my garage door was wide open all night. I had armed the alarm from the bedroom, with apparently no problems or notifications that a door was open. The system allows arming with any door or window open with only a brief message from the base which may be in another room and unheard. My expensive ADT system, whatever other faults it had (mostly rising prices) was much better at this. It allowed the arming with open doors, but with explicit commands.
ADT requires a 36-month contract, making it a long-term commitment for homeowners. While this model works well for those looking for consistent service over the long haul, the commitment may not be ideal for renters or those planning to move soon. ADT’s contracts typically include cancellation fees, so it’s important to understand the terms before signing.
SimpliSafe offers no long-term contracts, making it one of the most flexible options on the market. This allows homeowners to cancel at any time without worrying about penalties. This is particularly attractive to renters, first-time buyers, or anyone who values freedom and flexibility in their home security setup.
If flexibility is a top priority, SimpliSafe’s no-contract model is the clear winner. However, if you’re committed to staying in your home long-term and want a professional system, ADT’s contract-based service may be worth considering.
ADT requires professional installation, which ensures the system is set up correctly and optimally configured for your home. This service is particularly useful for homeowners who want a hands-off experience or have complex setups requiring expert attention. However, professional installation comes with a fee, typically starting at $99.
SimpliSafe offers flexible installation options, including DIY setup, which is straightforward and designed for even non-technical users. For those who prefer professional assistance, SimpliSafe also provides optional installation services for an additional fee, starting at $99.
ADT is ideal for homeowners who prefer an expertly installed system, while SimpliSafe caters to those who want the flexibility to install the system themselves, saving on installation costs.
ADT offers comprehensive home automation capabilities, integrating with smart home devices such as smart locks, thermostats, lights, and garage door controllers. With its app, users can control their home systems remotely, schedule automation, and receive real-time alerts. ADT’s advanced automation is well-suited for tech-savvy homeowners looking to build a fully connected smart home.
SimpliSafe provides limited home automation features, primarily focused on security. While it does integrate with some smart home devices, such as Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and smart locks, its ecosystem is not as extensive as ADT’s. SimpliSafe prioritizes simplicity, making it a better fit for those seeking basic automation rather than a fully connected home.
ADT takes the lead for homeowners wanting a robust, integrated smart home experience. SimpliSafe is better suited for those who value simplicity and don’t need advanced automation features.
ADT’s monthly monitoring costs start at $45.99, which is on the higher end of the market. In addition to the monitoring fees, ADT charges upfront fees for installation and equipment, which can make the initial setup more expensive. However, ADT’s comprehensive service, professional monitoring, and home automation features justify the higher costs for many users.
SimpliSafe’s monthly monitoring starts at just $17.99, making it one of the most affordable options. Additionally, SimpliSafe offers the flexibility to purchase the equipment outright with no ongoing fees if professional monitoring isn’t needed. This affordability makes SimpliSafe an attractive option for budget-conscious homeowners.
For cost-conscious individuals, SimpliSafe’s lower monthly fees and lack of contract requirements make it the more budget-friendly option. ADT is better suited for homeowners who prioritize a full-service experience and are willing to pay for the added benefits.
