The Bad

  • No Professional Installation
  • Company History

No Professional Installation

ADT Self Setup is a DIY installation home security system. ADT provides plenty of resources and customer support to help homeowners properly install their ADT security system, customers are responsible for installing every component themselves, which may lead to some issues including connectivity problems.

Company History

The company's overall history has been relatively unstable. The company was founded in 2004 and then purchased by DIRECTV in 2013, which then became a part of AT&T in 2015. In April of 2017, the former CEO of Blue by ADT, previously known as Lifeshield, acquired the company from AT&T and brought back the original self-installation platform with a direct-to-consumer approach.

However, in 2019, LifeShield was acquired by ADT. Recently rebranded to ADT Self Setup and with ADT support, the company is now taking product innovation to the next level, while continuing to make excellent customer service a top priority.

ADT owes me over $500. I don’t have time to give accounts of all of my calls with the company and their failure to resolve right now but I just wanted to get the process going. I joined ADT back in 2021. (I will provide exact details later.) So far I have gone through at least 8 ADT Blue malfunctioned cameras which have been fedexed to me after failed attempts to get my cameras connected to my Wi-fi. After about the 8th pair of failed camera connections, I just gave up in August of 2022. However I have receiving a $56/monthly bill faithfully every month since then. My blood pressure would get dangerously high after navigating through countless 1-2 hour phone calls with customer service, and I just couldn’t tolerate nor did I have the previous time to devote to these fruitless, frustrating, attempted but failed trouble-shooting calls sometimes incompetent representatives. I am a teacher in public schools and have very limited extra time to devote to things like this. In the meantime, since August, and previously, during these lapses of time, I have not had ANY security services. My neighborhood and condo complex is in a dangerous area in Memphis, TN, which is a city with one of the highest crime rates. So every day, I feel very unsafe, and worry for mine and my daughter’s safety and well-being. Just last weeks I had a very expensive Thule bike rack stolen from my shed, which is right in front of a camera. But since the camera is broken, I could not catch the thief on video and therefore lost a very valuable piece of equipment. I have had to put all of this on the back burner because of my busy job and being a single parent to 2 kids, one who is in a residential treatment center. Not ONCE have I EVER gotten a call about my customer satisfaction with the Blue by ADT service. In fact, about 5 minutes ago, a customer service age

DO NOT BUY BLUE ADT!!!! They assured the Blue ADT alarm system would not be triggered by pets, the attendant mentioned clearly, at first call, no cats or small dogs can trigger it. I had a cat jumping from the table and the system has been triggered, I called them and another attendant said sorry if we didn't mention, but do consider cats on the floor not on the table. Really this blue ADT system NOT WORKS as it was sold to me. In two months I already had a false alarm calling the police, more one and I will be fined. Had other two more false alarms due bad function of the sensors. Already have two entry sensors replaced, two motion sensors replaced. The cameras always loose the connection. The system is very slow. Started the Blue by ADT service in January of 2023. Since that time I have had to call into customer/tech support for several issues that are still not resolved. I have asked that they would accept the return and refund me because I spent more than 30 days to install everything and to realize how bad this product is. They said once it's after the 30 days, they will not accept the items return. Now I am digesting the idea to accept loose around $1000, because once I am not an expert in installation and spent more than 30 days to install it, I can't return these items after 2 months of use. My recommendation, avoid this bad quality product.

LifeShield's system is simple, easy to understand, easy to install, and it works effectively. I've had it for 3 years now, and I haven't had a problem with it; it's done everything I expected. The unit looks modern, it works effectively, and I'm very pleased. It's not like the previous system I had. The other one had 2 extensive wired systems that weren't reliable, and they always needed some sort of repairs. With LifeShield, I can control it with my iPhone; I love that! I would only recommend them to expand their product line, but besides that, it's been a very positive experience.

I was pleasantly surprised that, whenever there was a problem, the police did come out, or the sheriff I should say. For some reason, the technician forgot to plug in the keypad into an outlet, and the system was operating mainly off the battery. Of course, the battery would completely drain, so that caused the police to come over. Fortunately, I already changed the battery and plugged it into an outlet. Besides that, it's very simple to use, however, I still think that having a dog would be a wonderful alternative.

This company refuses to give return equipment address labels until the lease is complete and account is closed. They didn’t allow me to close my first account until I established a second account “trial” that was actually a 3 year lease. They’re refusing to allow me to return in-used equipment I never used and told me to give it to another person to use. I’ve tried to send back equipment for a year, but they will not allow me to until my lease is completed And account closed by them. I don’t suggest this company to anyone.

I decided to go with LifeShield because of a burglary to my house, and ever since, I have sleeping easier at night, not being worried when I'm away from home. However, the only thing I'd suggest them to polish is their alert notifications because the text messages and email alerts have a delay, they don't go out at all sometimes.

I am very happy with the assurance that we have, everything's safer when we go to vacations. With my phone app I can track what's going on the house, I can see who's in, and who's out the house. Their customer service is great, they're very helpful and responsive, it's easy to replace batteries or any warranted items. My only suggestion is if it was easier to get new cameras into the system, so it can worth the monthly fee.

Lifeshield failed to deactivate a recent alarm that was set off due to a mistake from my part. I confirmed my information and requested to the agent that the alarm be stopped while on my way to work, but instead the police showed up unnecessarily. It was a major waste of time from my part and the part of the officer, which could have been easily prevented from Lifeshield.

They should have regular updates on customer satisfaction. We've had some issues with the equipment, and we haven't really heard any feedback from LifeShield about fixing it or replacing it. We did appreciate the ability to look at the cameras when we're away from home, and to know that our home is safe when we aren't there.

My husband was going out of town a lot and I needed something to make sure I was safe, so I decided to go with LifeShield. I like the fact that it alerts me as soon as the door is open, so they gave me the secure feeling of knowing that if somebody opens the door, it will set off. Another thing I really like is the notifications you get when the alarm goes off, they call right away.

Thinking positive about LifeShield, we just lock up everything and set the alarm every day, before we go to bed. However, the alarm has gone off, and we never had a call back from anybody. I would think somebody would call back and find out why the alarm went off. I don't know now if there's going to be any response, as far as local authority, if it goes off.

After my husband died, my car was broken into, so my son-in-law recommended a security system. I think the biggest benefit LifeShield has provided is that we feel safer now. We installed it ourselves, and it was actually very easy to install. Plus, technical support was excellent, and everything they've had to deal with has been terrific.

I purchased the system because I believe that it would keep my home, myself, and all my valuables safer. I would say that I appreciate that when an alarm goes off, they call to identify if there's a problem, instead of automatically sending over the base officers. I've had these few false alarms, but I've also had legitimate alarm go off. One thing I did notice is a deduction on my insurance policy.

A few upgrades would be beneficial to the customers. We've had a few issues where the sensors didn't work properly. My wife set the alarm off, and she thought the alarm was on, so she walked away. When I got home, the alarm wasn't even on, so I guess the alarm didn't catch. My previous providers didn't install properly their systems, so this is my last hope, and besides that situation, it's been working just fine.

We've really loved the LifeShield system! We've had it for about 3 and half years, and we've been very pleased with it! Due to technology upgrades, the equipment has changed. AT&T has offered us their own system, but LifeShield is still better. It gives us a peace of mind, knowing everything is protected when we leave. If someone were to try to break, there would be a response by our security system to call the police, or fire department, and that peace of mind is very important to us.

We had Brinks for a long time, but the lower cost solution that LifeShield offered was the reason we switched over. They should take more advantage out of the smartphone integration, and stuff like that. Their website goes down quite a bit, and It makes it difficult to turn things on and off with the smart device when the website is down. Also, some of the equipment is low quality. Actually, the touch pad is very poor quality; it works, but it has a big crack, even though it sits on the table and never gets touched.

man, some of these criticisms are just BS. I've had this for over 10 years. Yeah, there were some installation issues but the customer service is excellent; they are always there and very helpful. Once it is installed i've had few problems that weren't related to dying batteries. Monitoring service is excellent; i don't know what these people are talking about. I've often gotten alarms that I didn't even know about because I didn't answer the phone. I get email, text or calls. Door and window monitors, motion sensors are all fine. Never had a problem. I have dogs and cats and the alarms never go off. Easy to use interface on web and phone. Maybe if I was doing it again i'd use simpliSafe because the monitoring fee is less but i'm happy with the existing system.

If I could give zero stars I would. This company is a NIGHTMARE. Every time we get the sensors up and running one of them craps out. We call, they walk us through the whole tedious process of resetting them, they claim they’re fixed, a couple days to a week later they aren’t working AGAIN. So, we call again, same process, we request new sensors, still not working! We have repeated this horrible go round multiple times with them! We’ve even had a new hub sent to us. I’ve asked twice now for them to deem the equipment as malfunctioning and waive our remaining contract fees but they REFUSE. What a nightmare. I’m a Navy Veteran and my husband is currently serving as active duty (we live on a military base) and we will definitely be putting out a warning for all our military friends living on or off base to STAY AWAY!

Blue by ADT has gone completely downhill. When I first signed in 2021, the technical support was actually pretty good. For one, someone answered the phone. Today, it is horrible. There is no way they should still be receiving high ratings after all the complaints I see online now and my personal experience. I have been trying to get someone in techn support on the phone for two months now because one of my sensors and my doorbell camera stopped working. Each time I am waiting for up to an hour and then I get cut off or when I ask to be called back, I don't get a call or it's not until days later. And I missed the call and the process starts all over. Once, I got a call back and the call terminate in the middle of the conversation. The representative never called back! Clearly, they have my account information with my phone number. When I answered a customer service survey and gave a bad review, someone called me back, but I missed the call. They left a voicemail. I haven't been able to get anyone in tech support since then. Contrast that to the sales department. They answer the phone in 1 minute or less. I did an experiment and tried the billing and account management department. Not a surprise, I was also on the line waiting and waiting. I chose the general customer support option (the line you pick when your issue doesn't fit neatly into the other options and they have to direct your call) and they answered pretty quickly). The woman actually told me that the complaint department and the tech support lines both had wait times of over 45 minutes, and were experiencing high call volume. She was unable to connect me directly to a person. So the only option was to transfer me to the same line that I have already been waiting on for months. Seems to me ADT needs to make some changes. I think they are banking on the reputation they have built over the years. But, they are NOT the same trust-worthy company they used to be. I'm annoyed I paid money for their equipment and now have to lose the money I paid and look for anew company or stick with them. Neither choice is great. At the point I feel like I have completely wasted my money.

I just like the fact that I can view it in anytime on my smartphone. My wife feels more secure when I'm not home. Also, I like that we can leave our house, knowing that it's secure, and that's valued.

I have a greater sense of security now, and I really appreciate the weather alerts. My only recommendation would be that they should find a way to help maintain their sensors. I've had a couple of sensors go bad on me.

I've always had a security system, and the reason I chose LifeShield was that it's wireless and a self-install system. I'm happy with the system itself, except for the battery. Besides that, it works just fine.
