Highlight: Chase Sapphire Reserve® Card

The Chase Sapphire Reserve card is one of the most popular rewards credit cards in the industry. Offering exceptional travel rewards and benefits you can get three times the points on eligible dining and travel expenses.

Through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal you can redeem your points and use the program’s travel-booking tool, powered by Expedia. The travel-booking tool allows you to purchase travel accommodations and other expenses with accumulated points instead of cash.

Co-branded Credit Cards

Chase offers a variety of co-branded credit cards, allowing you to earn more rewards and points with certain airlines, hotels, stores, etc. Chase is partnered with, and offers co-branded cards from, the following companies:

  • Southwest Airlines
  • United Airlines
  • British Airways
  • Aer Lingus
  • Iberia
  • Marriott Bonvoy
  • Hyatt
  • IHG Hotels
  • Disney
  • Starbucks
  • Amazon Prime

Co-branded cards generally allow you to earn points on all purchases which can then be redeemed for specific perks and purchases. For example, you can earn 1 percent in Disney reward dollars on all purchases made with the Disney® Visa® Card; reward dollars can be redeemed toward most anything at Disney or Disney locations.

Low Introductory APRs

Many Chase credit cards, including some co-branded cards, offer zero percent intro APRs for a certain number of months after opening a new card:

  • The Chase Freedom Unlimited® and Chase Freedom Flex℠ credit cards offer a 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening.
  • The Disney® Premier Visa® and Disney® Visa® credit cards offer a 0% promotional APR for 6 months on select Disney vacation packages from date of purchase.
  • The Ink Business Cash® and Ink Business Preferred® credit cards offer a 0% intro APR for 12 months from account opening.

After the introductory/promotional period, your APR will typically range from 14.24 percent to 23.49 percent depending on your card and creditworthiness.

Free Credit Score Monitoring

To help you keep track of your credit and manage your credit score, Chase offers free credit score monitoring through its Credit Journey program.

You don't have to be a Chase customer to access Credit Journey, but you must make an account which will provide you with a variety of credit monitoring services:

  • Check your score — get your credit score at any time without affecting your credit
  • Protect your credit — protect yourself from identity fraud
  • Receive real-time alerts — get alerts when your credit score changes
  • Get personalized insights — learn how you can build and maintain your credit

Positive Customer Reviews

The majority of Chase reviews are 4 or 5 star, with customers highlighting generous rewards, excellent customer service, and helpful online tools and features. In addition, many customers mention that they have had their Chase card for years (upwards of 30 years) and are still pleased with its features.

Customer Review: Jeremy Balls from Kaysville, Utah

“I have several rewards credit cards through Chase. They are straightforward and easy to understand and use. Never had any issues. It is nice that I can move my approved credit between credit cards.”

Poor reviews and complaints are limited, and the majority are outdated. But, some customers do mention high fees and difficulty being approved for a credit card even with a high credit score.

The Bad

  • Annual Fees
  • Foreign Transaction Fees
  • No Secured Credit Card Option

Annual Fees

The majority of Chase credit cards have an annual fee. Fees range from $49 to $550, depending on the card.

The popular and highly rated Chase Sapphire Reserve card has the highest annual fee of $550, but offers exceptional rewards for both dining and travel purchases. In general, cards that offer generous rewards will have a higher annual fee.

If you would like to avoid an annual fee, there are Chase credit card options available. But it is also important to note that a good to excellent credit score may be required to qualify, particularly if it is a co-branded card.

Foreign Transaction Fees

Some Chase credit cards, such as the Chase Freedom Unlimited card, do charge a foreign transaction fee of 2 to 5 percent on purchases made outside of the U.S. or in a different currency within the U.S. (e.g., buying a product online from Canada).

Chase does offer a variety of cards that don't carry this fee, but there are also other credit card issuers that don’t charge a foreign transaction fee on any cards, such as Discover or Capital One.

No Secured Credit Card Option

If you are looking to build or rebuild credit, a secured credit card can be a viable option for you. However, Chase does not offer a secured credit card. Thus, if you have bad credit or a limited credit history, you may find it difficult to qualify for a Chase credit card, especially for the use of building/rebuilding credit.

The Bottom Line

Chase is well known for its generous rewards program, and offers a variety of cards with competitive cash back offerings or point redemption systems. You can choose from a wide selection of Chase-branded or co-branded credit cards, providing you with more flexibility in how you use your credit and what rewards would be most beneficial to you.

With a wide selection of co-branded hotel, travel, and airline cards, you can save money on travel, but it is important to note that Chase does charge a foreign transaction fee of 2 to 5 percent on some cards.

Chase customer reviews are mostly 4 and 5 star. Customers frequently confirm the generous and flexible reward offerings and are quick to praise the company’s customer service. In addition, many customers mention that they have had their Chase credit card(s) for a number of years, suggesting that Chase could be a good and reliable long-term credit option.

I had a credit score in excess of 800 and over $100,000 worth of credit card spending limits across all cards including 2 Amex cards. I had 4 Chase accounts including one for Amazon and one for United Airlines (for which I paid a fee). I became disabled temporarily and went no more than one month late on some competitor cards. Not all of them, just some and my credit limits were getting reduced by several. I was 100% on-time and making more than the minimum payment on all my Chase cards, but they wrote me a letter saying they were closing ALL my accounts because of what was going on elsewhere in my credit scene. That shocked me. And I used those cards. I liked flying United and getting double miles and shopped at Amazon a lot. Since those businesses chose to use a card company like Chase I now fly other airlines and shop elsewhere online. And now that my credit is back up, it will be a cold day when I take a Chase offer over the dozens of other competing offers I get.

I recently purchased a set of tires for my RV ($3,200) using a seller that required I use a Credit Card. I deposited that amount in the card, and after they credited my account they IMMEDIATELY LOWERED my allowed crfedit by that amount. Essentially, I lost the $3200 andI had to again pay the tire company (using a Mastercard Debit from my account instead)

Super bummer about our experience with this company. We have 3 Chase cards and have been excellent clients for over 10+ years. We had a large, fraudulent charge on our account in April and spent literally 100s of hours and many trips to town for faxes and certified letters to get it remedied only to be completely scammed. Chase did NOTHING. We followed their advice to a T and were told by multiple agents it was on their end that the ball was dropped, yet we could not get any resolution for the scam charge on our card. We are getting a jumbo home loan and will need to keep these accounts open until that happens for credit purposes. But the minute we are able, we will be cancelling our accounts and taking our business elsewhere. Chase did not stand up for our rights, did not reward our long-term loyalty and did nothing to support us in a very stressful time.

As an employee from a company who uses Chase daily, i've been very disappointed in how they treat me, a customer. I bring business from 10 different accounts, and everytime i walk in to make a deposit, i get treated like im in the wrong for bringing in so many deposits. I've been tempted MANY times to change banks.

Scammers had to dispute numerous transactions, but would get flagged when I was using my own cards at hotels for booking flights . They stole $ from me when SSI made a back payment deposit owed to me . Account was closed and funds were never returned. They justified keeping funds by reversing disputes that were already investigated and ruled in my favor

Worst bank ever! They canceled my credit card for no reason and didn't even tell me! I found out from a company when my payment bounced! When I called they were extremely rude and would not tell me why they cancelled my card! I had been a customer for years and always paid on time! After posting a bunch of warnings all over their social media someone eventually reached out and said it was a mistake and reactivated my card but it was too late... I would never use Chase ever again based on that experience!

Terrible I can't say much more than that. Online isn't that bad but having to replace a business card took over a month, and five trips to the bank for a business card I have had for over twenty years. Not only that but Chase bank has screwed up every loan they have bought. Horrible bank but I've had a business account there since 1984, and they could care less.... If it wasn't for the automatic payments already there I'd dump them.

Not very good. They have been a very poor company to deal with. They want your check in the mail before you ever get the Bill. The want access to your Bank Account. I won't do that.

Do not honor their promise to increase card limit after six on time payments and I had the card for 6 years, never made a minimum payment and never missed a payment. I just paid them off and will never use them again.

These people are awful and they’re criminals using loopholes to succeed. I have a small bank account, and then two big bank accounts. Capital One is much better overall, and I’m sure a homeless man would be too. I can’t express my dismay for Chase enough.

Zero Customer Service, trying to get one of their credit cards, with an "excellent" FICO score above 790, was not good for these folks. I dump them and ended -up with better credit cards with very comfortable lines of credit.

Chase has the worst customer service and longest hold times. My bank account was closed without my knowledge after I was a victim of unemployment fraud. My paycheck was direct deposit. Account was closed. Took me 3 months and a call to the local News. Thumbs down.
