Variety of Cards

Capital One offers 19 different types of cards, allowing you to choose the best credit card based on your credit score, rate and fee preferences, and different rewards offerings.

Capital One seeks to provide a credit card option for every consumer. Those who are looking to rebuild credit can apply for a secured credit card, an offering that is not available with every credit card company. Those with excellent credit can choose from various cash back cards, or pick a rewards credit card, offering points or miles on airlines, hotels, or other travel expenses. Capital One also offers store credit cards for those with excellent credit scores.

Each credit card listed on Capital One's website lists the purchase rate, transfer information, annual fee, and credit level required for approval, making it easy to see at a glance what options might be best for you.

Pre-Approval Without Impacting Your Credit

If you'd like to check which cards you qualify for based on your current finances, you can do so without impacting your credit score.

Cards for Bad Credit

Capital One offers a secured credit card for consumers with bad credit, or those trying to rebuild credit.

Secured cards require a security deposit, which becomes your credit limit. Capital One requires a deposit of $49, $99, or $200 for an initial credit line of $200. This secured card is unique in that the security deposit is refundable, and the customer will be automatically considered for a higher credit line after six months. The card does not have an annual fee, but the APR rate is relatively high, at least compared to regular credit cards, at 26.99 percent variable APR.

Rewards

For the majority of their cards, excluding secured cards used for building credit, Capital One offers attractive rewards to its cardholders.

Rewards vary based on each card. It is important to note that some cards do not allow rewards, including cash back, on all purchases. Some cards, such as the Savor® Rewards and SavorOne® Rewards cards only offer cashback on dining and entertainment. It is important to read all details provided to choose the rewards card that will best fit your needs.

0% APR Credit Cards

Capital One offers credit cards with a 0 percent intro APR, which is not necessarily unique to this card issuer. For those with excellent credit, they can apply for a card that will not require interest rate payment for the first 12 to 15 months.

Consumers with poor to fair credit will not be approved for cards with a 0 percent APR offering, and can generally expect higher rates.

No Foreign Transaction Fee

Capital One does not charge foreign transaction fees, which is a nice benefit for cardholders who travel frequently. Instead, foreign purchases will be automatically converted at the foreign exchange rate at the time of payment processing.

Free Credit Score Check

Through CreditWise® by Capital One, customers can access and view their credit history at no additional cost, and with no ramifications to their credit score.

It is important to note that CreditWise uses a different credit scoring model than the commonly used FICO score model. Both models are based on similar key factors that lenders look at when considering you for a credit offer.

Fraud Safeguards

Customer security is Capital One's top priority. To protect a customer's credit card information, as well as bank account and debit card information, Capital One offers a number of fraud safeguards. Its associates are required to complete security training, and there are systems and protections put in place to protect a customer's personal information, such as their social security number.

If your card is lost or stolen, Capital One has listed phone numbers that you can call for immediate assistance. Upon contacting Capital One, your identity will be verified before account information is discussed or shared.

Positive Customer Reviews

The majority of Capital One reviews are positive with 84 percent of reviews rewarding the company 4 or 5 stars. These positive reviews most often highlight good experiences with customer service, including prompt responses and problem solving. In addition, customers are please with the ease of setting up an account, as well as competitive rates and rewards compared to other credit card issuers.

Customer Review: Beverly Schacher from Long Beach, Mississippi

"We have been very satisfied with our Capital One credit card. They don't charge an annual fee, their customer service is good. It let's you get cash advances and is accepted almost everywhere."

Of the limited complaints, customers outline being overcharged on fees as well as receiving high interest rates.

The Bad

  • Annual Fees
  • Late Payment Penalties

Annual Fees

Capital One offers credit cards with no annual fees, but there are various cards that have a required fee. Annual fees range from $39 to $95, which is significantly lower that other card issuers, such as American Express that has some cards with an annual fee of $250.

However, the higher the annual fee, the bigger the rewards that can be offered on that credit card.

Late Payment Penalties

Capital One charges a fee for late payments, which varies depending on the card.

gavel

The Bottom Line

Although Capital One experienced a large data breach in 2019, in which a hacker gained access to over 100 million credit card accounts, including access to personal information, Social Security numbers (Social Insurance numbers for Canadian customers) and bank account information, the company has bounced back, providing trustworthy service and fraud protection.

Capital One offers several great benefits, including a number of rewards programs and competitive APRs. However, the company does have annual fees and late payment penalties in place. If you have bad credit, Capital One has options available in the form of secured credit cards with refundable security deposits, providing an option for building or rebuilding credit.

The majority of Capital One customer reviews are positive, with the majority of customers outlining good experiences with customer service in which they received prompt service, especially in response to fraudulent card activity, which is good to see considering the company's past data breach.

Capitol One froze my parents accounts due to suspicion of fraud when I took over for their finances upon their concomitant medical emergencies. Despite providing POA, parents socials and my fathers ID, they have yet to unblock their accounts. They had the audacity to reprimand my father over the phone while he was in rehab recovering from a stroke for giving me account access. They also forced him to go into a Capitol One on his walker the day after rehab to unfreeze his accounts. They are still frozen. Now its an issue with my mother's account. She is bedridden and would need medical transport to go to their bank in person. All in all, this has been a horrible experience. They do not treat their customers with respect. No sympathy from the fraud team. I am now having to pay all their monthly bills and home services from my personal accounts. My attorney will be contacting them.

I want my money back to my card $198.18+49.54= $247.72 immediately, otherwise, I will write a bad review for capital one and also I'm telling to my all friends to write it down as a bad review for your company until you give it back my money to my account. It's up to you whatever day you want to send my money, today or tomorrow whatever day. I will stop writing bad reviews for you until I receive my money. I sent you all clear documents that the condor must NOT charge for luggages and put the red pin for you on the documents, but its looks like you want to play games with me ok no problem. When I talked to the manager of dispute cent Cathy, she was so rude and impolite that I saw capital one charge me again for $49.54. I want my money back because you have a lot of clear documents and the condor must NOT charge me. If you don't help me, I will sue Cathy, the manager of the dispute center, and capital one. Because you are stealing my money and you shake hands with fraudsters. This is 100% my right that my money back to my card.

I have had Capital One credit card for over 10 years, and with the exception of the first year of owning the card they have never raised my credit limit. All my other credit cards (Citi, Discover, and American Express) never had an issue raising my credit limit. But, it not just that. Capital One has the highest interest of all my credit cards, and is never willing to negotiate with you. With most of my other credit cards I'm able to negotiate down the interest payment after being with them a couple of years, but that is not the case with Capital One. Last I don't particular care for their online interface. I have found my other credit card companies interface more intuitive. My recommendation is to seek elsewhere if you are looking for a credit card company. I can guarantee that you can find a better product.

Worthless customer service. I disputed charges for fraud and even after Capital One' lazy Fraud Deptartment said I had to respond a second time I made sure to do so via signed confirmation along with 12 supporting pages to my dispute. Not one individual from Capital One could confirm receipt of this in Salt Lake City UT so now they are reporting derogatory to my credit report. Its not big deal because Capital One is a garbage company and I used to work in commercial collections so I will be handling this the legal route. In the meantime I recommend staying away from them and check out the other credit card company with 24/7 live USA support.

Mailed a CC payment to them and they supposedly never got it. Charged fees and interest. Finally 2.5 months later they finally cash the check!!!!! I seriously doubt the problem was with USPS because all the other mail I mailed with the cc payment made it fine. So they get paid twice and get all the interest and fees too. How convenient. Could be their way of forcing you to go paperless and set up auto pay. Wonder how many this has happened to?

just made a significant payment on my Capital One Platinum card but interest is still extremely high. i have a small balance to pay off and contacted capital one to see if interest rate could be negotiated or even card type. Spoke with a few CSR's and T2 escalation reps and they did not impress me at all- one CSR DID make a useful suggestion and told me to make a few smaller payments within the month. i will try this way again, i used to do this when i could afford it but as the holidays approach- i dont have this luxury but i will see after New year or close the account :(

I was a loyal customer and I made a purchase online and reported to capital one of my purchases and how I didn't want the online company to do any other purchases on my account I gave capital one my confirmation number that I was given from the merchant. I was afraid it would happen that's why I provide the information to stop any transactions. But they refused to listen to me I have no reason to lie but long story short I no longer do business with that card I was a loyal customer for over 25 Years and they chose not to believe me.And chose to take my business some where Else.

I had my credit card shut off because Capital One didn't send me the monthly bill. I pay my balance every month, credit limit is 3 times the amount owed and I called immediately when I received the July and August bill on the same day and told customer service about the issue and that a check would be sent the same day. They still shut the card down so I had no credit card over the Labor day weekend. Less than impressed I would never treat one of my customers in such a manner.

I have had a Capital One secure credit card for more than 5 years, I got it when I was trying to establish my credit. As my payment history increased, my credit score went up to 780. I bought a house and I have a 97% perfect payment history, but Capital One has never increased my credit limit in 5 years on this secure credit card. I have charged and paid it off this card many, many times, but still no increase. I have 3 other cards with 20k credit limit, but still no increase by Capital One and I have asked why over and over again. They say it is because of a report by Experian, but I have pulled my credit report from Experian and there are no negatives. I have filed a dispute with Capital One and still, I have been unable to get the matter resolved.

I know I was stupid and some of this is my fault, but Capital One really duped me and I am sure they are not the only credit card company that does this. I was offered a credit card quite a while ago with a nice large credit line and zero APR to begin with, I should’ve realized that was too good to be true. They said I would not be charged any interest for the first 15 months and I took that at its face value. I did not realize that once the 15 months were over the 15 months worth of interest, would then be charged to me in one lump sum . My minimum payment went from $140-$523 overnight. I think this is a common practice in the credit industry and so I wouldn’t say it is just capital one but I would say be careful whenever you get a new credit card .

No, Just No. Don't waste your time and don't give this company your money. I had 3 cards with this company, great credit, and it didn't matter. For years.... credit increase requests kept being denied. Customer service is terrible. At one point, I got locked out of my online account, could not remember my password, and even uploaded my ID to prove who I was. Tried several ways to say "this is me" to customer service but still could not get into my account online- only through phone and paper mail. Ridiculous. I ended up closing all 3 accounts, and when Walmart switched to Capital One from Synchrony, I closed my Walmart card solely for the reason it was now managed by Capital One. Never will use Capital One again!

I had services for over 10 years. After receiving a check from a potential employer to purchase equipment, the ding the check fraudulent. This was fine and the funds were returned, except for a portion I had spent, I was not aware that this was fraudulent, and was okay with there investigation, that the found out because when trying to get into Uch with that employer I had no luck! But instead of protecting me from the fraudulent activity they closed my account! I never ever had any bad activities for my account like this and begged them not to close my account they refused and give me minimal contact. I would consider this very awful business practices very unfair some which I would think would be in violation of banking practices and rules!

I used to have a Capital One card and bank account. I got scammed/hacked a few years ago and they told me they were not able to anything about it, which was terrible. I then moved to Chase and a similar scam/hack happened, but Chase made sure I was taken care of and that I didn't lose any money that was not of my fault. I was a Capital One customer for 9+ years before that scam ordeal, but sad to say I will never bank with them again. I don't think they care enough about their customers in this growing age of internet security threats and where scams and hacks were at an all time high! No thanks Capital One, and thank you Chase!

I enjoyed my Capital One card for many years up until the point where I needed their help the most. I was being fraudulently scammed By one of those deposit money into your account and send us back some and you keep the rest type scams. Once I realized it was going on I got a hold of their customer service team and was reassured that nothing was happening and everything was fine in my account. and in fact the funds were still there, while I was watching them being taken out of my account online. I kept telling them that they're taking my funds right now can't you see this and they kept assuring me that everything was good your money is still there. After my account was drained and I had thousands of dollars of fraudulent debt on my account I called and called and called. Tried to get their customer service team to work with me, They never worked with me. They wouldn't work with me so I slammed them everywhere I could, bash them on social media I turned them into the BBB but with no results and up having to pay back all that stolen funds and fake funds that were deposited into my account. other than them sitting next to the criminals while they were doing it all, the proof was right in front of their cs teams faces, And they still did nothing to help

I reported the incident and solicited help from Capital One to deny the charges. Capital One failed to advocate for me, the customer. I wrote a letter to the president regarding the 3,187.00 charges. The charges were removed but reapplied a few months later. I am so disappointed with their lack of customer service.

When my balance was close to the limit, they would hold my payment until after they added interest fees to cause an overage & charge me more. New laws may have changed their ability to make these types of transactions, however, I can further what they did in the past to drag more money out of me at a time when I was struggling to make ends meet.

They give you high credit starting points. They will draft multiple times from your saved bank account to process the payment and even when you don't have it in the bank they take it. They caused me to be negative $900+ over 2 weeks time. They kept trying to take the payment every 2 days and then the bank charged me a bounce fee for EACH one. I would not recommend capital one for a credit account.

So they had me owing them 500.00 for a card that only had a 200.00 credit limit, and I hadn't even used the card yet. I had to speak with the manager, and ended up filing bankruptcy on this card. Ofcourse I will never apply for a Capital One card again.

Terrible banking company. I use bill pay and my bills are NEVER paid on time. If I pay a bill it will take 2-3 weeks to process. They have caused me so much late fees it is not even funny. Not to mention their terrible credit card plans. Will not be going back to this bank!

For some reason, I've found a lot of people like Capital One, but I have had problems with them for several months straight before I gave up and closed my account. The customer service was awful and they hardly gave any information that was useful. Transactions hardly went through smoothly. I would never recommend them.

I had a horrible experience with Capital One during a fraudulent experience they were no help at all. In fact, at times I felt as if they were the enemy. There was a huge lack of compassion and understanding. With Capital One it is all about money not the human experience.

Cannot pay off. They charge interest by the day. You make a payoff payment and they charge interest until they post it. Then, you pay THAT off and they charge AGAIN!

They tell you over thw phone to call back after 1pm est to make a payment. When you call you find you were charged a late fee of $35 because you paid after 1pm. Scandalous.

Horrible customer service. They won't help you in anyway and are extremely rude. Tried to close my account and they wouldn't. They charged an extra yearly fee which was told I never had one to start with. Thiefs

Am so annoyed by the amount of time they soft pull my credit and send me firm offers. Wish it would come to and end since I’m not looking but could be beneficial if you are looking for a credit card!

Very disappointed we have asked for SCRA for my husband being in the service for over 7 years and they have not verified or even contacted us and the interest charges keep piling on

Charges a fee of $49.00 per year, refuses to waive the fee. I've been with capital one for many years. I decided to cancel due to the fee.

Overcharged without contacting me, I opened the card and never used it and then received a bill for over two hundred dollars.

Too much interest on the credit card, forty-four percent is legal theft, will never use another credit card from them again
