The Good

  • Ability to Purchase Panels at the End of PPA
  • Example Scenarios
  • Member of the Indiana Solar Cooperative

Ability to Purchase Pales at the End of PPA

Unlike many other solar companies who offer PPA loans, Groundhog Solar allows customers to purchase the solar system at the end of the loan period for only $1. PPAs are normally agreements where the homeowner or business is required to return the solar panels when the contract ends or pay for the panels at a high price. With this incredible deal, customers can receive lower monthly electric bills and then purchase the panels at the end of the contract almost for free. Groundhog Solar does note this deal under its “nonprofit” section, meaning the deal may only be for nonprofit organizations.

Example Scenarios

Groundhog Solar provides numerous very detailed scenarios with different costs of solar, solar tax credits, loan lengths, and final costs. These scenarios give customers a great idea of how much their solar panels would actually cost. Few solar companies are as transparent with their prices as Groundhog Solar.

Member of the Indiana Solar Cooperative

Those who choose to work with Groundhog Solar can qualify for special group rates and discounts because Groundhog Solar is a member of the Indiana Solar Cooperative. Customers should be sure to verify if the group is still active, however, as the last posts were from 2019.

The Bad

  • No Batteries
  • Limited Purchasing Plans

No Batteries

Groundhog Solar doesn’t install solar batteries in the case of a power outage or storm. Instead, they can install gas powered generator systems for when this occurs. Although the pros and cons of using a solar battery are debated, many customers who choose solar want to be more eco friendly, and Groundhog Solar does not offer a solar battery to do so.

Limited Purchasing Plans

It is unclear whether Groundhog Solar offers more payment plans other than loans for all and PPAs for nonprofits. The top solar companies typically have a flat-rate purchase price as well as a lease option. For customers looking to go in that direction, Groundhog Solar may not be right for you.

The Bottom Line
