Sun Up Zero Down is a residential solar panel installer founded in 2011 and serving residents of New Jersey. As the name suggests, the solar company offers customers a way to take full advantage of their home’s solar energy potential for zero money down, often at fixed rates that won’t increase for 20 or more years.

The Good

  • Authorized SunPower Reseller
  • Multiple Financing Options

Authorized SunPower Reseller

One major advantage of signing up for solar with Sun Up Zero Down is the company’s partnership with SunPower, one of the industry’s leading solar equipment manufacturers. SunPower solar panels are second to none in terms of reliability, durability, and energy efficiency.

All SunPower products are backed by a 25-year equipment warranty, meaning if a system component like a solar panel or inverter is found to be damaged or defective in any way, SunPower will cover the cost of the replacement part.

Multiple Financing Options

Sun Up Zero Down is one of the few local installers to provide customers with a full slate of financing options to help them go solar. In addition to direct purchase of a solar panel system, the solar installer also provides third-party solar loan financing for zero money down. Solar loans have the distinct benefit of qualifying for state rebates and other incentives like the Federal Solar Tax Credit.

Additionally, Sun Up Zero Down offers homeowners the option of a solar lease or power purchase agreement (PPA). Both options allow customers to invest in solar energy without paying anything upfront. A Solar lease acts as a long-term rental agreement between the homeowner and the installing company. The company pays for installation, while the customer rents the system at a lower rate than the utility bill.

A PPA works like a solar lease; however, instead of the system, the homeowner only pays for the energy the system produces, again at a low rate.

The Bad

  • Only Available in New Jersey
  • No NABCEP Certification
  • Undisclosed Labor Warranty

Only Available in New Jersey

Sun Up Zero Down is only available to residents in New Jersey. Though the company has completed several successful solar installation projects across the state, the narrow service area may disadvantage the company to larger, nationally known brands. New Jersey homeowners are encouraged to read Sun Up Zero Down reviews and compare what they find to other companies in their neighborhood.

No NABCEP Certification

Sun Up Zero Down does not appear to be certified by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP). The NABCEP is responsible for industry-leading certification programs designed to improve technician performance, and protect consumers from both subpar installation and predatory sales tactics.

The lack of a certification is not a judgment on the company’s professionalism or service quality; however, the certification can make the difference to homeowners comparing multiple solar providers.

Undisclosed Labor Warranty

Though the company offers a competitive equipment warranty through its partnership with SunPower, whether that warranty also extends to the company’s workmanship is unclear. SunPower Master Dealers qualify for the SunPower’s Complete Confidence Warranty, which covers parts, labor, and production for 25 years. Whether Authorized Dealers like Sun Up Zero Down also qualify for this comprehensive warranty is undetermined.

The Bottom Line

If you live in New Jersey, and would like to work with a local installer that supplies industry leading products, Sun Up Zero Down could be the right choice for you. The company offers multiple financing options designed to fit almost all budgets. While the lack of certification and labor warranty disclosure may require customers to take a closer look at the service agreement (along with verified Sun Up Zero Down reviews), New Jersey homeowners are encouraged to obtain a free energy analysis and see how this company compares to top solar companies in their area.
