One-Way Destination

Moving can be stressful and frustrating, especially when you do not have the right equipment to make the move fast and easy. U-haul is determined to help the customers by offering on-way destination moves. The hustle of driving a rented truck to its original location is eliminated by offering a specific drop-off location in the state where you have moved to.

Low Prices on In-Town Moves

U-Haul offers low prices on the moving trucks if you need to use them in the town where you live. Prices start as low as $19.95 with $0.69 per mile, but total cost is based on the size of the truck and how many miles you will be driving. Also, you have the option to pick extended days and miles rates if you need the truck for certain amount of days.

The Bad

  • High Price on Between-State Moves
  • Restrictions on Ford Explorer

High Prices on Between-State Moves

Even though the prices on the U-Haul trucks are cheap for in-town movers, they are much higher if you need to move to a different state. Depending on where you are moving, the prices can range from $170 to $1,200 on a small truck, and up to $1,900 on the larger trucks.

Restrictions on Ford Explorer

If you decide to use U-Haul as your moving partner, you're required to enter the make, model, and year of the vehicle you'll be using if you'll be towing a trailer. If you say that you'll be towing with a Ford Explorer, you may receive a statement that restricts you from using any of the U-Haul equipment because of the excessive costs in defending lawsuits involving Ford Explorer towing combinations.

The Bottom Line

U-Haul is a do-it yourself moving service that provides moving vehicles, as well as moving equipment, storage facilities and moving help. To make the process even easier you have the option to drop off the moving trucks in the location where you have moved to, even though you might have picked up that same truck somewhere else. If you are using moving trucks in the same town you live in the prices are affordable and customizable based on the days you need it for; however, if you need to moving trucks to move from one state to another the prices might go up to $1,900. Also, if you own Ford Explorer, you can not use their moving equipment because of the excessive costs in defending lawsuits involving Ford Explorer towing combinations.

I have used U-Haul all most every time I have moved in my life and on the most part it has been good but this last time was horrible. My husband and I decided since we always had a good experience with trunk rental that we would use them for a storage unit, the setting it up on line went great, online said insurance was optional so we decide against it because we only need for a month or 2 then we got to uhaul they raised the price from online and demanded we pay for insurance though them even thro our renters insurance covered it. I called corporate they said that they would look into it but never got back to by phone or email. They also said that you do have to have insurance but their website didn't say that. I told them that was false advertising and they need to change their website. I have not been back to their sit to see if they changed it and I plan on never using them again for anything.

We used a U-Haul when we made a move to Arizona. We had a U-Haul trailer for my husbands Jeep attached to the back of the U-Haul, and about 20 minutes into our move there was smoke coming from the back of the trailer that the Jeep was on. Once we pulled over and contacted U-Haul they were not helpful or empathetic to the situation. We had to find a hotel for the night, as they said that we would have to drive to another city about 45 minutes from where we were to get a new trailer the next day. It's already stressful enough to move, but to another State is even more stress and then add on a broken axel on a trailer you rented and it's enough to make you crazy. Very unhelpful and unfriendly, the person that 'helped' us said that these trucks and trailers don't get the safety inspections that they are supposed to and are pretty much rented out as soon as they come back in. My advice would be to inspect the trucks/trailers before you leave and get the insurance.

I got our U-haul from a 3rd party location, which will be most locations outside of a city and you really gotta check the truck they give you before agreeing to anything or paying as it was the 1st time I had ever gotten one without a ramp in the back. The whole point of a U-haul is that they are lower to the ground and have ramps, its not easy lifting a couch up into the back with no ramp to go up but this is the nature of U-haul if you go to random locations and not their big ones in the city which can be a pain to get to when you live outside of town and are moving outside of town. if your trying to be cheap, you just have to watch out for what you get.

We had uhaul put a brake Controller on my SUV and they ran a wire over my gas pedal. Every time o pressed the gas beyond a certain point, my pedal was held down causing me to almost crash off a mountain road in Colorado. It was not until I could get into a parking lot to discover what had actually happened. I called the uhaul in Denver Colorado and they fixed the problem.

The day before we had scheduled to move with a U-Haul, they called and let us know the truck we had reserved was no longer available. So we had to drive 30 minutes in the opposite direction in order to get a truck that was available.

Online reservations aren't guaranteed! Made a "reservation" for a truck online only to be told by the local dealer they didn't have that size truck available and that the online system takes the reservation without checking inventory.

Having to put a credit card on file to rent the cargo can or utility truck blows. Perhaps a pay ahead of time and just an added expense to cover the possible cost would be better for some of us.

Uhaul has vehicles that have either broken down on me, or they are too expensive for the services. My personal experiences have not been too great, so I am hesitant to recommend the company to others.

Most of My Uhaul experiences have been negative. Their customer support isn’t very helpful with certain issues. The trucks are older and are usually beat up.
