The Good

  • Booking Process
  • Build-Your-Own Package
  • Moving Deposit
  • Certificate of Insurance
  • Hourly Services

Booking Process

Bellhop’s booking process is one of the easiest and most user-friendly we’ve come across. To schedule a move with the company, go to the website and click ‘Book a move.’ Once you’ve done that, you answer the questions. You can select whether you want to hire movers or if you need a truck and movers. You input how large your house is. You can even set a time for when you want the movers to be at your home.

Once Bellhop has all your information, the company will recommend the package it thinks is best for your situation.

Build-Your-Own Package

If you fill out all the information to schedule a move and none of Bellhop’s recommendations sound right to you, you can build your own moving package.

With this option, you can increase or decrease the number of movers, trucks and drivers, and labor hours. The difference with this package is that you are billed with Bellhop’s prorated pricing model. So, if you reserve more than our two-hour minimum at the two-hour mark, you are then charged in prorated increments, but only for the time you use.

Moving Deposit

When scheduling a move with a company, most moving companies require you to pay a deposit. Typically most companies will ask for 20 to 30 percent of your estimated cost.

With Bellhop, your deposit is only 5 percent of your estimated cost.

Certificate of Insurance

On Bellhop’s website, you’ll find its Certificate of Insurance or COI. This certificate is proof that Bellhop has insurance if there were damage to the building (apartment, condo, etc.). Some property managers may require proof of insurance, and, conveniently, Bellhop has this easily accessible on its website.

Hourly Services

If you already have a moving truck and everything is packed, you can use Bellhop to hire movers to help load and unload your belongings to its new location. However, you can also use Bellhop to hire movers to help set up an event or take down chairs and tables. Or you can hire them to help you re-arrange your patio or garage.

This service is convenient because you don’t have to use Bellhop solely for moving. It’s a great service for those who just need a bit of help around the house or have an event they need help setting up or taking down.

The Bad

  • No Packing Services
  • Strict Cancellation Policy

No Packing Services

Consumers will need to keep in mind that Bellhop does not offer packing services, something that most other moving companies do. You can purchase packing supplies (boxes, tape, bubble wrap, markers, etc.), but when it comes to packing up your home or office, that’s your responsibility.

Strict Cancellation Policy

Bellhop’s cancellation policy is a bit stricter than other companies. With many moving companies, you have until two weeks before your move where you can cancel for free.

If you need to cancel your move with Bellhop, do it within the first 48 hours. If you cancel after Bellhop charges your 5 percent deposit, you will not get it back. Additionally, if you cancel within 72 hours of your reservation date, not only will you not get your deposit back, but you’ll also be charged a $100 fee.

The Bottom Line

The moving industry doesn't have the best reputation — lack of transparency, brokerage, damaged and missing items, lack of control, hostage situations (companies refusing to deliver belongings until more money is paid), etc. And unfortunately, as the moving industry continues to grow, some companies choose to take advantage of their clients. However, Bellhop is one company that hopes it can change all that with its personalized services and easy-to-use technology.

Although Bellhop hasn’t been around as long as other moving companies, it has received high levels of praise for its transparent and reasonable pricing, superior customer support, and variety of moving services. The company prides itself on providing consumers with reliable services and exceptional customer support throughout your entire move.

Bellhop is also fairly transparent about its pricing, which is relatively uncommon throughout the industry. You can quickly fill out the online form and receive a quote. However, if you want more customization for your move, you can build your own moving package.

The company offers local and long-distance moves, but it is not available nationwide yet. Check out the company's website to see if Bellhop is available in your area. Also, make sure you familiarize yourself with the company’s cancellation policy, as it’s a bit stricter than others.

The guys showed up, but kind of randomly. One guys was late too. The initial moving part went along fine enough, however I found out that they had only committed three hours to my move and there were still things left to move. They hurriedly closed up what was done at that time and raced to the storage facility and hastily stacked the furniture and boxes. They told me another team would be assigned to me to finish that job, but I didn't get that call so I had to hire another company to come in and finish the work. We reorganized the storage room to better use the space and discovered much of the furniture was poorly wrapped or protected. It was very frustrating to learn this after the fact of paying for the service and tipping the guys for their work.

The overall move was ok. One of the movers barely lifted a finger. Also, after all the furniture was moved in, I noticed a few items had been chipped or damaged. I have one of the drawers in my dresser-that I use quite frequently-that no longer opens or shuts the way it used to.

Moving is extremely stressful. Having to find and rent a Uhaul at the last minute was extremely inconvenient. Also, I wasn't refunded the actual fee that Bellhop charges for the truck and mileage; I was only reimbursed the funds that I spent renting the Uhual. The MOVERS were AMAZING and extremely PROFESSIONAL.

The guys were friendly however they didn't respect our things very well. They were trying to complete the job quickly and ended up damaging many of our personal belongings by just throwing our things into the storage unit. I will not be using bellhop again.

The team lead and one of my movers was very nice and helpful. Had multiple billing and timeliness issues. They added an extra mover without my permission and the truck was an hour late in addition to two of the movers who were 1.25 hours late. They tried to bill me for the full amount of time even though they were late.

The appointment I made scheduled 3 people but only two showed up. I ended up having to pay more because we went over on time by a couple hours. The two people who came were very helpful and hardworking.

Damages caused, inefficient loading and unloading, unreliability (only one mover showing up for unloading out of two scheduled). However, they do have the cheapest prices. You get what you pay for?
