SmileDirectClub Cost

SmileDirectClub charges $1,950 for one-time payments — slightly lower than the average cost for the industry (cost may vary based on country and currency). 

If customers want to pay monthly payments, they make a $250 one-time deposit along with $89 per month for 24 months. Making monthly payments does end up being a bit more expensive than paying all at once, totaling $2,386. This cost averages to about $3 a day throughout the duration of the treatment, which is up to 60 percent less than the price of traditional braces.

This price, however, does not include a retainer set, which costs an additional $99. 

SmileDirectClub is slightly cheaper than other companies within the clear aligners and clear braces industry. This is especially true if you factor in that SmileDirectClub's treatment does not require you to make regular visits to a dental office, so you save on office visit costs. 

SmileDirectClub’s prices are much cheaper than traditional metal braces, which can cost around $5,000 without insurance and around $3,500 with insurance.

Straighter Teeth in 6 Months

The duration of each customer’s teeth alignment process will vary due to the severity of misalignment. On average, SmileDirectClub can straighten a customer’s teeth between four and six months of treatment. This is done by wearing SmileDirectClub aligners (a clear plastic retainer) 22 hours a day for a designated amount of time. This is generally quite a bit quicker than metal braces and traditional orthodontic care.

Nighttime Straightening Option

SmileDirectClub now offers an even simpler way to straighten teeth — SmileDirectClub Nighttime Aligners, aligners that only need to be worn in the evenings. For those who are not feeling excited to commit to 22 hours of aligner wearing per day, these new Nighttime Aligners are the solution. Those who opt for the nighttime option are only committed to wear the aligners for 10 continuous hours a day, most of which should be while you are asleep. Because of the shortened daily wear time, the overall process will take a bit longer, averaging around 10 months.

Easy 3-Step Process

There are three steps in the straightening process at SmileDirectClub. This process is similar to most other clear aligners.

1. Making an impression of the teeth — SmileDirectClub will make a 3D image of the customer’s teeth to prepare different sets of clear plastic aligners to straighten the teeth.

The 3D image is made in one of two ways: customers can visit one of SmileDirectClub’s SmileShops or partner network dentists for a free 3D scan of their teeth or pay $59 for SmileDirectClub to send an impression kit to the customers’ homes, which walks customers through taking an impression of their teeth by holding plastic trays with a tasteless putty in their mouth. This creates an impression mold of the customer's teeth so the company can create a 3D representation.

2. Completing the treatment — SmileDirectClub aligners will be produced that are specifically designed for each customer and sent to their house. Each set of aligners will be worn for a predetermined time, with each set becoming increasingly straighter, aligning the customer’s crooked teeth along the way.

One of the company's more than 250 state-licensed dentists or orthodontists will monitor your progress via regular virtual check-ins. The treating doctor will track progress remotely, eliminating the need for in-person visits. 

3. Purchasing a retainer — Once the teeth are straightened and the treatment is finished, customers will need to purchase a set of retainers for $99 to be worn at night, so the straight teeth don’t move out of place again.

SmileDirectClub recommends that customers purchase a new set of retainers every six months.

Flexible Pricing Options

So how can you pay for SmileDirectClub?

There are two payment options and costs for clear aligner treatment. You can pay all at once, or you can pay monthly. Monthly payments do not require a credit check. 

  • $1,950 for a one-time payment 
  • $89 monthly payments, totaling $2,386 (this includes the $250 down payment)

SmileDirectClub accepts payment through Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), Health Savings Accounts (HSA), and CareCredit. The company is also in-network with most major dental insurance companies, which means customers can often cover on average 50 percent of their treatment with insurance. Depending on your dental insurance plan, this may come as a reimbursement through your insurance provider.

Teen Treatment

In July 2020, SmileDirectClub launched a new treatment catered specifically for teens. The new SmileDirectClub treatment plan includes a patented aligner case with Tile bluetooth tracking so that teens will have a harder time misplacing aligners. In the event that aligners are lost, the Lost Aligner Protection Program is available to make sure that replacement aligners are expedited and treatment won’t be delayed.

SmileDirectClub is also adding new features to its telehealth program, such as aligner change and doctor check-in notifications for both teens and their parents. Teens with mild to moderate malocclusion can get started on their smile journey by requesting a doctor-prescribed impression kit.

Ships Internationally

SmileDirectClub is currently available in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, UK, Germany, Austria, Singapore, Spain, and Hong Kong.

Club Warranty

All customers receive their SmilePlan, or a 3D view of their treatment plan, within 72 hours of their scan appointment or impression kit return. Aligners are custom-made and shipped to the customer within about five weeks depending on the country.

Customers have up until 30 days after receiving their aligners to return them for a full refund. If customers aren’t satisfied with their results, SmileDirectClub offers free re-evaluations and can provide additional aligners. This is at no cost if SmileDirectClub is notified within 30 days of treatment ending.

SmileDirectClub also offers free aligner touch-ups for life if a customer notices their teeth moving out of place. This Lifetime Smile Guarantee is only valid if customers purchase two sets of retainers a year after finishing treatment. 

Customer Support

SmileDirectClub offers 24/7 customer support via phone, chat, video, text, and email. The company has a dental team that is available via phone, email, chat, and video to assist with concerns, such as fit issues, progress concerns, or general treatment questions.

Oral Care and Whitening Products

In addition to providing a cost-effective teeth straightening option, SmileDirectClub has expanded into oral care products. The company offers items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, water flossers, and even a UV cleaning machine. 

SmileDirectClub includes teeth whitening products in its teeth straightening treatment packages at no extra cost. Other companies in the industry will charge extra if you want to include whitening products. This is only available in the United States and Canada. 

These products are also widely available in the United States through SmileDirectClub's website and at Walmart (United States only). All products come highly rated on both Walmart and SmileDirectClub’s websites. SmileDirectClub is the only clear aligner brand to offer a one-stop shop of oral care products.

Down Payment Required

SmileDirectClub requires a $250 down payment to begin its monthly payment plan. On top of the cost for the at-home impression kit, it could cost customers around $299 to sign up for SmileDirectClub.

Retainer Not Included 

Not only must you pay $99 for a set of retainers at SmileDirectClub, but the company recommends that you buy a new one every six months in order to keep your teeth straight.

Customers should also note that while SmileDirectClub does offer a smile guarantee, you have to order two sets of retainers each year to maintain that guarantee. 

Some Customer Service Issues

Some customers have expressed frustration with SmileDirectClub’s customer service, often having to wait a long time before getting in contact with a representative to resolve their problems. Other customers have expressed their aligners caused discomfort to their teeth and gums. That being said, straightening your teeth requires teeth to be moved, so some discomfort, especially early on, is to be expected.

The Bottom Line

SmileDirectClub is the largest in-home clear aligners provider in the country and claims to represent around 95 percent of the doctor-directed at-home clear aligner industry. With over 6,300 team members and more than 390 SmileShops, the company provides invisible braces for a price slightly lower than the industry average. The average time for treatment is also about average, with most treatments ranging from four to six months. SmileDirectClub offers a standard daily wear aligner as well as nighttime aligners and a special treatment bundle for teens. 

In addition to each clear aligner treatment, SmileDirectClub also provides teeth whitening to each of its customers and a warranty. If within 30 of treatment a customer isn’t satisfied with their smile, they can contact SmileDirectClub and receive a free re-evaluation. This warranty combined with 24/7 customer service makes SmileDirectClub a great option. The downfalls are that after treatment customers must pay for retainers at $99 a pair to keep teeth straight after treatment and that it’s recommended customers buy those every six months to keep the smile guarantee. And although SmileDirectClub’s customer service is available 24/7, some customers have noticed long wait times to get in contact with a representative.

The in office experience was great. The online/call in/email support needs work. I would send an email advising of my concerns and be met with a generic auto filled reply email. Then, when I reiterated my concerns I was replied with the same generic auto filled email - very impersonal. When I called in to discuss my concerns of having to pay for moulds for my reassessment when, at my in office visit, I was told nothing further would need to be paid for besides my retainers at the end of my treatment. This was handled unprofessionally, due to COVID the in office option was not available and so my request had to be escalated to their Escalation Team, where I was told this would be a one off. Very misleading of the in office staff to advise that any reassessment would be covered under my full treatment payment and then have call center staff advise otherwise. They did offer to send me a Visa gift card in the amount I would have to pay, but I'm sorry that's not the same thing. In these hard times of COVID I shouldn't have to pay out of pocket up front when I was told there would be no additional costs. I wish I could of gone back to the in office staff to have my concerns addressed as they were much more understanding and supportive. I started the reassessment request the beginning of May and still don't have my concerns addressed. My treatment was suppose to be finished the middle of May.

Overall I'm glad for my overall improvement, however, 1. My front teeth did not move back as far as I would have liked them too. 2. I feel somewhat silighted because for the last 1-2 aligner treatments before completing my required time of treatment, I did not receive a reminder txt/email that is sent out each time you need to switched aligners. All coomunication had ceased at that point and I wasn't done being treated. So I feel like since I was nearing the end of treatment, I definitely did not receive the same customer service extended to me that was present at the beginning of me signing the financial contract....I'm just saying.

The experience was professional, however the support, follow up, and results were not as expected. The 3D scan was not how things turned out, and the final retainers took 9 months to arrive. So I was using my final aligner which was supposed to be for 2 weeks, for 9 months because Smile Direct Club opened in China. My aligners to begin with were jagged and tore up my gums. Wearing the final aligner was very painful, and to not have the results that were shown was very upsetting.

I would give them a 5 for the results of the aligners, but getting customer service to respond is a nightmare. Thus, 3 stars. I had to extend the wearing of the aligners because some of my teeth just didn't want to go straight. My bottom two front teeth are still not aligned properly, but I just don't want to do battle with the company to get more aligners.

Overall a good experience but I don’t like how now that I’m finished, the gaps in my teeth open up throughout the day. I know that’s the risk you take with aligners and retainers but my teeth looked so good towards the end of my time wearing the aligners. My gaps are closed when I wake up due to wearing the nighttime retainer but they open throughout the day. I could just wear the retainer all day but that’s not what you’re supposed to do.

The initial consult was fine. They sent us all the supplies quickly, Nd we have seen very good results. The problem is when you need to contact them for any reason. Nobody speaks English well, and sounds like they're in a gymnasium full of phone answered. Very strange. Also, nobody told us that we would have to pay $100 additional for each retainer. Sneaky!

the liners were never fitting well enough to wear them in public. so i only wore them at night, at home. i also only had minor changes needed and it didn't fix them to my standards. the retainers i bought at the end of the process didn't fit right and took nearly 2 months to get a new set that still didn't fit quite right and didn't want to go through the process again, so i am not even wearing them anymore. disappointed in the overall process and outcome.

Most of the process was awesome. When I got to my last set They suggested I order my retainers but I told them I didn't feel like my front teeth were street. I sent an email with what I thought the problem was and some photographs in December I'm still waiting for set to straighten out my bottom teeth. I was very pleased until the end when my retainers weren't fitting right And we're jamming in my gums... I talked to the 'dental' team and they said to go to my dentist with that problem... my Dentist tried to get more information on my case but they would not tell him and would not allow him to touch my retainers.. I was put on hold multiple times... the customer service is awful.

My experience was mixed. I really enjoyed using the liners but it took me a while to finish mine because there was a lot of work needed. But I mean overall it was positive because they really made my smile better. The original six months wasn't the right amount, I needed more time.

My first set of aligners fit ok. It cut my tongue a lot so I had to do a lot of filing. Then when it was time to switch my aligners the second set did not fit at all. It’s been two months since waiting for my new set. Other than that the service and people are kind.

Expensive for the minimal aligning of my teeth-have straight teeth from braces and mostly did this for retainer purposes. Should have lower cost options for people that need minimum movement. Also the bottom aligners were all too low and cut my frenum and had to do a lot of work to file them down.

It was kind of far to drive to have the scan done for the aligners. I was given a $25 gift card that did not work. After several calls and countless time on the phone, Smile Direct ended up crediting my bank the $25. I am on my 3rd set of aligners. They have really rough edges that cut my tongue and cut both sides of the gum between my front teeth. Filing didn't help much.

I think that it is risky, but people should do research before they use this product. They could do better with the aligners because they often get stuck on my gums when I put them in and have to pull the skin out, and I think they should be able to shave the aligners instead of making us do it.

Great start. Aligners often had very jagged edges and had to be sanded down a lot and I added brace wax to wear them all day. After a few months there was little engagement except a few automated emails. My bite is off slightly so one tooth moves back and forth and my molars don’t all touch anymore. Love the whitening pens.

The response of customer service. Very late turn around time. Accuracy of product is at 80%. I had an issue with the the aligners being both bottoms for one week and the finalization of the retainer is an incorrect fit. It's been over 2 wks and I'm still waiting o a response.

Some of the retainers I had to cut to fit because they dug i to skin. The retainers, after I was finished with the program, fit only on the top - not even close on bottom and I wore mine religiously!!! I'm wearing the last tray as my retainers. Waste of $99.

I can only rate them as good because my smile isn't what I thought it would be and talk to someone in their customer service is like shouting into the wind. They have the same generic responses for everything. I did this to save money and time. I guess I got what I paid for.

Some of the liners were not trimmed well so I had to do some trimming of my own. I ordered my retainer when I was prompted too but the order never went through and there was no follow up. Now Im stuck wearing my last set of trays for 4 weeks, I wish you would have followed up on your end

They were willing and proactive to provide refinements for a gap that opened up, but they are trying to convince me that a space in my bite is normal. They are made of a thicker plastic than your aligners, but just like your aligners they will wear over time. I was told to arrive 10 minutes early for my appointment and then didn’t get called in till 17 minutes after my scheduled time, so I was waiting for 27 minutes. Then I was told the appointment will take less than 30 minutes, it took 44 minutes. The person doing my appointment did not know what an HSA or FSA was when I asked her details about using it. She also took her mask off several times during our appointment, and there was no I protection being worn by staff as I expected that since the website said staff would be wearing it. When I wasn’t ready to put a deposit down the staff member I was working with got a different staff member to come in and talk to me about it and I felt as if I was in a high-pressure car sales environment. It did not feel like healthcare and made me feel like I was being pressured instead of helped. We did appreciate the detailed directions to get to the club and the validated parking. I feel it would’ve been more professional to have the staff and scrubs as opposed to professional dress clothes.

Good, but..... The place was great and my Tech was great. I explained to her that I was concerned about my slight overbite and my bottom teeth. I did go see an orthodontist to see if I was an Invisalign canidate. I did some research and thought Smile Direct as a more affordable option. As they explain they are basically the same. I chose the one time payment of $1750. I was sent an email that had only my top teeth plan. Since they are 99% there was ZERO change in their 2 year plan. I emailed asking for my bottom. I was told I was approved for top only, sorry for the inconvenience. I was confused since that was my only concern and mild crowding. Much worse in most before and after pictures online. I was told they would reach out with more information. I received a second email that stated my lower exceeds parameters and protocols for SD. I am not sure if SD liners are not as strong as Invisalign or if it was a longer treatment than the standard year and half. I would have paid more if it was a slightly longer plan. Since I started my bottom was my only concern and it was not approved, a phone call or explanation email would have been nice. I had to ask for more explanation. Back to the name brand.

I appreciate the way the product is presented (all at once) and the support products it comes with. However, my overall experience is disappointing. After a 4 month program, the primary result I was hoping for was only partially achieved. The large gap between my 2 front teeth has been 90% closed down, but that distance was covered by spreading other teeth behind them out instead of bringing all the teeth (front and rear) closer together. Furthermore, I've sent several emails requesting a consult with my servicing doctor to go over my concerns, but there's still been no response. My program cost about 35% that of [Invisaline], but the quality of the treatment has been deficient. The saving grace is that they've agreed to follow up my initial treatment with a second round- a bittersweet result since the program is a hassle to tolerate (improper fits, mild gum irritation, cleaning, protecting, taking them out for every meal, etc).

The impression package I was sent was the wrong kind for a person just starting your program. The pamphlet that was in the box said something like “it’s not uncommon to need a readjustment during your treatment send these and get back on track”. I however haven’t had impressions from you guys before and it was confusing as it didn’t come with instructions on how to take the impressions. I had to search videos on how to take impressions and when I watched your video they referred to instructions that my box didn’t have. I was still able to take great impressions however just wish I received the right box for them :)

The experience was easy, quick, and reliable up until I received my approval to begin treatment and 3D model of my transforamation. The email i received suggested that I was all set and approved to begin with my liners. Provided the link to purchase them. However upon reviewing my 3D model I noticed that the bottom teeth model did not appear to work. My teeth never moved in the model. I contacted customer service to ask about the issue. I was told that the liners would not work for me on the bottom, only the top. This information was not mentioned to me in the "congratulations" email I received. Only information email included was that I could now buy my liners and begin the process. Would have been nice to have the professionals explain to me the issue rather than have to search out the info for myelf.

I received my impression kit the next day after ordering. I was impressed at how quick it came. I sent it back the same day and was able to see the tracking the whole time. Once it was received on their end it said to allow 72 hours for the results of my smile. 72 hours came and went and my account still said the same thing. I reach out via live chat and was told to allow another 72 hours. Again it came and went. After a few different live chats the answers changes from 2-3 days to 7-10 business days. Meanwhile my account still said please allow 72 hours. I tried calling customer service but the wait was so long I hung up. Just under the 4 week mark I got the emailed results. I was prepared to move forward till I saw that my minor crowding problem was going to leave me when a gap between my front teeth which I do not have now. I opted to not move forward because this wasn’t the results I wanted.

My SmileShop experience was fantastic. I went to the Lehigh Valley pop-up shop and worked with Sasha. The experience was very professional and easy-going. Sasha was phenomenal and made me feel comfortable during the appointment and confident about moving forward with Smile Direct Club in the future. However, when I got home I reached out to Smile Direct customer support via Chat on their website to follow up with some questions. I was chatting with "Axl V". It was an extremely unpleasant experience. This individual seemed bothered by my questions. He terminated the chat while I was still discussing my concerns, which felt like the equivalent of being hung up on. There was also no use of punctuation during the chat, which made the understanding his responses a little difficult. After my session with Sasha, I was ready to jump into Smile Direct Club. She was FANTASTIC. However, since my discussion with "Axl V", I am extremely hesitant and don't believe I will be opting in. I do not want to risk joining a program where the customer service was this poor.
