Welcome to our Shield Security review! Shield Security was founded 29 years ago by a police officer and investigator whose family home was burglarized in 1976. He then made it his mission to help prevent others from becoming a victim of crime. This company receives extremely high ratings from its customers. Additionally, they don't require you to sign a contract and their rates are very competitive ranging from $18.50 to $42.95 per month. And they not only offer home security options, but they also offer a variety of home automation options as well.

The Good

  • No Annual Contracts
  • Very Competitive Rates
  •
  • 29-Year Business History
  • Wireless Cellular Connection
  • Power Outage Protection
  • Total Connect Service

As we mentioned above, Shield Security doesn't require you to sign any long-term contracts like many security companies do and they offer very competitive rates, which in most cases is lower than the industry standard. Additionally, they have an extremely positive 29-year business history which is a good indication they must be doing something right. Shield Security prides themselves in providing a wireless cellular connection that doesn't allow for the possibility of an intruder to cut the wires to your security system. And, they also provide you with a battery back-up for your system so you and your family will be protected in the event of a power outage. Shield Security will also provide you with their Total Connect app which will enable you to access, monitor and control all your systems remotely from any computer or mobile device.

The Bad

  • Steep Installation Fees
  • Doesn't Offer Any Moving Services
  • Undisclosed Equipment Warranty Policy, If Any

Shield Security does charge an installation fee that starts at $395, whereas other companies offer free installation if you sign a long-term contract. On the other hand, Shield Security's monthly rates are lower than most and they don't require you to sign a contract; therefore, depending on what's important to you, it looks like it's all about the same in the long run. According to the Shield Security website, it doesn't appear they offer moving services for your system. However, they do state that they look forward to servicing your new location. So it's possible that moving your system is something they would consider, but it's unclear as to what their exact policy is regarding this matter. That means you will have to contact them for more information. Additionally, Shield Security's equipment warranty policy is not publicly disclosed on their website. So they might have one; however, if they do, it's nowhere to be found. Therefore, once again, you'll have to contact them for more information regarding this matter.

The Bottom Line

Shield Security appears to be a reputable security company with a positive long-standing reputation in the industry. There are some very good aspects about choosing their services such as not having to sign a contract and their low monthly monitoring rates. However, they do charge some hefty fees for installation and they potentially don't provide services for moving your system should the need arise, or providing you with a warranty on their equipment, albeit they might actually have a warranty, but that information isn't disclosed on their website.

Don't do business with this company. They have salespeople who lie. I switched to them from ADT several years ago because the monthly fee was lower and their control box has a feature that allows them to talk to me in an emergency. I got a minor upgrade after my initial 2 year contract. When I agreed to do the upgrade, my fee went up. I was told that it would be a $5 increase but that it included new batteries and a home visit to install them every year. I just called them for the first time in 5 years and was told that my "warranty" does not include batteries and I would have to pay at least $89 for them to come out for anything. I asked why I would have paid the extra money and the rep said she had no idea and got testy. Furthermore, I specifically told the sales guy that I wasn't interested in more than a 2 year extension of my contract. He left that off the app, and the fine print signed me up for 6 years. They want 90% of the cost of the remaining contract value to end it early. Every time I've had to call their office, they are inefficient and rude. I told the most recent person that their service was beyond bad, and she hung up on me. That is no way to run a business. On the few occasions that my alarm has gone off, either I don't get a call at all, or it takes them 15 minutes to call me and ask whether it's for real or not. If it was for real, I'd already have been robbed or killed or whatever. Shield Security Services suck.
