BlueCross BlueShield vs UnitedHealthcare

Kaitlyn Short
Kaitlyn Short | Senior Editor

BlueCross BlueShield and UnitedHealthcare are well-known health insurers. Both companies offer plans in many parts of the United States. Plan availability will vary based on location.

BlueCross BlueShield operates through many subsidiaries, which makes it trickier to compare it to other health insurers generally.

However, the best company for you depends on the kind of plan you need and what kinds of plans are available in your area.

DETAILS

I paid claims for them for 30 years and found them to be completely reliable to their insureds, so when I became eligible for Medicare I chose them for mu supplement plan. Since the day I was insured, 02/01/2013, I have never paid a deductible or co-insurance amount. I only pay my premiums and I can go to any doctor or hospital at any time without referrals or pre-approvals. Choose Plan F - you'll be very happy!

They are charging me an out of network fee for a skin cancer surgery not available to me in-network. Denied my appeal to bill as tier 1. I received no upfront counseling that my bill would be 500% higher than I thought. They even identify the doctor as in-network.

I had United Healthcare for 5 years and I must say, I had nothing but good experiences with this company. I noticed when my primary care doctor would need authorization from the company to send me to a specialist, (nose, ear, throat doctor, pulmonary specialist etc.) I would get quick feedback, every specialist that I have seen, there was never a problem with my referrals. Since I had to see quite a few specialist, along with taking test constantly, I never had to cancel an appointment due to no referral from United HealthCare. Great Company!!!

DETAILS

United Healthcare loves taking premiums but no payments to Dr's, dentists or very little. Had a dental plan thru Medicare system only 1/2 of their alloted amount out of network(no dentist in network within 25 miles). Needed a filling and crown replaced not covered had to eat total Dentist bill. DROPPED THIS SORRY COMPANY NEVER EVER TO RETURN. HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU NOT USE AND LOOK ELSEWHERE
