The process of creating a GoFundMe campaign is quick and easy. Users must first create a GoFundMe account, through with they set a fundraiser goal, tell their story, and then share the campaign with friends via email, text, and/or social media. Once donations begin coming in, users can easily manage funds and withdraw them as needed.

Fund Type

GoFundMe uses a 'Keep What You Raised' funding type. With GoFundMe, reaching your goal is not required. This works well because you keep each and every donation you receive, no matter if you are running a personal campaign or a campaign on behalf of a team or organization. Some other crowdfunding campaign platforms operate under an "all-or-nothing" model, meaning that if you don't reach your fundraising goal, you won't receive any money.

Fees

GoFundMe doesn't charge anything to create and share your online fundraising campaign, nor do they charge for using the platform. GoFundMe is almost entirely free except for the payment processing fee or transaction fee, which is approximately 3 percent and will be deducted from each donation. This fee helps GoFundMe remain as a safe place to donate.

There is no partial or non-completion fee in the case you do not complete your campaign. There are crowdfunding companies that do charge you a fee if you fail to meet your campaign goal, so this is definitely a perk of going with GoFundMe.

Maximum Allowed Raise

Many crowdfunding platforms using donation models for individuals have a maximum amount or limit to what funding amount you can raise. GoFundMe has no funding limit. This lets you raise as much as you want or need in one campaign.

Deadlines

With GoFundMe, there are no deadlines or time-limits. Your campaign will remain live until you choose to stop donations or remove the campaign altogether. In some cases, users have left their campaigns up indefinitely as a lasting memory of all the wonderful comments and support they received. This is a great policy for personal fundraisers. Sometimes people can't donate within 30 or 40 days (a typical deadline for many crowdfunding platforms), so having an indefinite deadline can work well.

GoFundMe Charity

Through GoFundMe Charity, charities across North America can support and amplify their causes, subscription-free. Designed specifically for nonprofit organizations, the platform provides access to a variety of resources, including donor analytics and event registration software and more. 

Administrative Work Options

GoFundMe offers users several automated features for administrative tasks, which are extremely helpful for individuals trying to run an effective campaign without past experience. Even if they have experience, admin tasks take a lot of time and can get confusing the larger the donator pool gets.

GoFundMe's automotive administrative task features include: Thank You Messages: You can thank donators individually by selecting a recent donation and clicking the 'Say Thanks' button. GoFundMe will let you personalize the message and send it directly to the donor's email address.

Update Feature: In doing so, you can choose to share the post with your current supporters and donors - you can even share the Update on Facebook to attract more support. Update messages can also include up to 3 photos or videos. GoFundMe's 'Update' feature is a great way to keep your campaign fresh and your donators up to date without having to do it manually, which would take a lot of time away from campaigning.

Quick Assistance: GoFundMe will generally respond to your emails within 30 minutes during the day with any questions you have about your campaign.

Receiving Funds

Typically on crowdfunding platforms you have to wait until the end of your campaign to begin collecting funds. With GoFundMe, you can request your money right away as the donations come in or you can choose to withdraw your balance directly to your bank account (campaigns in the US may also request a check). Withdrawals may be made daily, weekly, or monthly and will always process for the full available balance in the user's WePay account. Funds may be received via electronic bank transfer within 2-5 business days, or paper check within 7-10 business days. (Daily checks are not available, weekly or monthly only.) 

Although you can request a withdrawal at any time, the time it takes to receive funds is a bit long when compared to other crowdfunding sites that can sometimes do it in as soon as 24 hours.

Model Type

GoFundMe operates as a Donation Model. Equity model campaigns are not offered through GoFundMe. A donation model is a good thing for personal fundraising, but GoFundMe recommends signing up with your Facebook account if you want to appear in GoFundMe's Public Search Directory. 

Although this is optional, it actually isn't if you want your campaign to be featured publicly on their website. Not everyone has a Facebook account or wants to open one, or perhaps they would prefer to keep their profile off a public platform like GoFundMe.

No PayPal

It's important to note that although PayPal Giving Fund is GoFundMe's payment processor for their charity campaigns, there is still no PayPal for personal fundraising.

The Bottom Line

It's no surprise that GoFundMe is one of the world's most popular crowdfunding sites. The company is highly successful. Customer Happiness representatives deliver answers to questions in a timely manner, (often within 30 minutes or less of submission), there's plenty of flexibility with funding options, and there are no limits on how much you can raise and no time restraints. GoFundMe is also the cheapest crowdfunding platform out there. A downside is that equity model campaigns are not offered and PayPal cannot be used for personal fundraising, but all in all, users can expect a convenient, simple experience when funding.

Based on customer reviews, the majority of which are positive, we would recommend GoFundMe for your fundraising needs. Satisfied customers most often remark on how easy it is to use GoFundMe, including setting up a campaign and managing funds. In addition, they note how GoFundMe is a trustworthy company and they feel comfortable donating through the platform. Of the negative reviews, customers most often detail withdrawal difficulties and unexplained account issues.

Not sure how this company got started, but it is a lifesaver. It is fairly new to us in the past 4 years, but we have given at least 4 times to someones GoFundMe page. Twice it was for medical expenses that a dear friend of ours had due to a horrible accident their son was in on a three wheeler and hospital expenses were extremely high. Another time was for an officer in our town that had been killed in the line of duty and a GoFundMe page had been set up for his family, wife and 3 children. The other was for funeral expenses of a friend of ours whose child was killed in an auto accident. This is a wonderful organization that is trust worthy, and people when they hear a GoFundMe account has been set up, don’t hesitate to give toward it. There are so many other means out in this world today that people do not trust and would not give. However, this company has earned a name for itself and I will continue to give my money to it when someone or a tragedy happens that I am aware and know of.

I was creating my Go Found Me page in the middle of the night - 3 a.m. I stopped and tried again and again. I checked the FAQs. No luck. So I contacted GFM directly and within 10 minutes someone got back to me telling me that within 20 minutes they would have someone working on the problem (I wanted to change the dollar amount for the account. Actually, I didn't, but I kept getting an error message to enter a dollar amount. Nothing worked so I contacted support. I did have to take a few screen shots (which I learned how to do - a good thing and then embed in them in an email - another good thing to know!) After two emails, the problem was fixed and I was up and running with my account. YEAH!

I recently contributed to a flood relief fund for folks in Mazomanie, WI. Since I have contributed to other Go Fund Me requests in the past, I didn't realize that GFM had implemented a new tipping system that automatically applies 15% to a contribution to help support GFM. You have to opt out of that my clicking on a pick list, selecting other, and putting in 0 or whatever tip you are comfortable with. Knowing that GFM already collects around 3% of your contribution, I didn't want to add a TIP (which in my case added $30 to my donation). So when I got the email about this added fee, I immediately send an email back to their support system to ask for a refund of that fee. Someone responded in a very timely manner explaining that the TIP was not mandatory and they would remove the charge for it from my card in a few days. I suggested that they think about changing their system to perhaps default to 5% instead of 15% and they might find more people allowing that to go through to help support the GFM system. So assuming the refund comes through, I am happy with their response and now understand how their new interface works.

Well, this appears to be very important for you, as this is the second time I have written a review. We had a problem with the site in that I could not administer the monies because the original creator is an American and I am a Canadian. I contacted tech support and was contaced by Ese. Sorry I do not know her last name. Her contact was within the hour, and basically she answered all of my questions and provided excellent support (Something that even today is rare, because many times the people do not answer your specific question) She contined to provide excellent service until the issue was resolved. I wrote he an e-mail thanking her for her service. That it is! I told her that if I was in my prime and hiring staff again, I would hire her in a minute. Thanks RC

I have been so impressed with GoFundMe, since recently setting up a campaign to benefit an orphanage and ministry in Uganda. Recently, a friend accidentally donated twice and I emailed GoFundMe Customer Service asking if one of the donations could be refunded. It was about 9 pm in the evening and I was amazed that I received a live person emailing me back within a few minutes. She had already looked at my fund, saw the duplicate, and with my subsequent approval she stopped the second donation from being processed. The whole process was completed in less than half an hour. The representative was very courteous and professional.

Recently my daughter found a puppy that had suffered abuse. She took it upon herself to find a solution and started a GoFundMe account. I needed to assist her with the account info and such. Not being very tech savvy coupled with a computer that chose to act slow on that particular day, I needed assistance. The representatives that helped me were quick to respond, personalized their emails to me, and solved the issue. Athena, the boxer puppy, is healing nicely, gaining weight, and looks happy. I think this is a wonderful organization. Up until now, I had only seen it on news coverage. Now, I can speak from experience. I cannot day enough about how wonderful and easy it was to get the help we needed. A heartfelt thanks goes out to all who helped.

Let's admit it there are some hesitation when sending money to others on-line. I recently had an experience that I like to share and why I will only use "GoFundMe" app. My nephew sent a post through facebook on our family page. The young man wanted a new note book. Always, the aunt that help out....I donated to his fund. Great - Well not at first. As the app will always send you back a receipt of you payment, I notice that an extra $20.00 was taken out. I almost fell out all those old worries came back. Blessings to me, the app had an area where I could send feed back on my experience. I told "GoFundMe" that it seems like I donated $20.00 to "GoFundMe" However, I didn't authorize that payment. Someone from them company immediately reached out to me and refunded my deposit. I thought that was GREAT!!!

I was unable to make an online bank donation into someone's funeral fund because GoFundMe failed to recognise any of my bank account numbers. I contacted GoFundMe and had three very quick responses apologising and telling me they would sort out the problem as quickly as possible. It was not long before I received several other emails advising me that the situation had been resolved so I was able to make my donation. I am very grateful to GoFundMe because being able to make this donation was very important to me. Thank you so much to everyone on the team who contacted me and resolved the problem.

I was going to list my dog Mikey on the site as he had a liver shunt and needed very expensive surgery. I had not thought of asking, but an owner of a litter mate, whose puppy, Rowan, also has a liver shunt has her puppy listed. She is receiving much needed funds as surgery is $7000 - $9000. Unfortunately my Mikey died 10 days before surgery, so he was never listed. Go Fund Me was very helpful. I was going to to list, then changed my mind because I didn't know anyone to ask for donations. Decided to try anyway but Mikey died before I could list him. All communications were helpful and considerate. I think Go Fund Me is doing great things for many people.

I had donated a couple of years ago for my daughter who had cancer and when my husband was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, I set one up for gas and other related costs for Chemo and radiation. We were about 40 miles one way from his doctors and the radiation part of his treatment was for 30 days. When he died, I had just edited the campaign from the previous one. He had no insurance and wanted to be cremated. Since I had taken money from the account previously, they were going to send the donations to that checking account. My name was not on the checking account. We had opened one for donations The support that I received from Go Fund Me was excellent! Even after my husband had died and because I only had edited the existing campaign, they still helped me tremendously by stopping the withdrawals on one account and letting me input another account number. They were there for me and it was done very timely. I really did appreciate them because of what I was dealing with. I lost my husband. They were there for me!

My co-workers set up a GoFundMe donation to help cover medical expenses associated with caring for my dogs. I had to say good-bye to my three dogs within 5 months, two of them within 4 days of each other. It was and still is devastating, but the generosity I received was simply amazing. After I set up the account information to have the donations sent to my bank, I saw that the transfer would take up to 10 days. I did not check my account until the time they stated and did not see any transfers. I became very concerned the money had gone to a wrong account. I contacted customer care and within 15-20 minutes received an email from customer care. They looked into the issue and provide all the information I needed to verify the funds transferred properly...it just happened sooner than I expected. I should have checked earlier! Regardless, the prompt service I received was fantastic. I highly recommend GoFundMe!

GoFundMe is an exceptional service upon which you can raise money for "charity". I have participated numerous times giving donations to various different fund raising events through GoFundMe, which is why I suggested it to the person who was looking to raise money. I never encountered the issue of a refund of my donation, but as a result of the fund raiser deciding to return the monies, I was most impressed with the service provided. I inquired about this return policy (since I never experienced something of this nature before) and the GoFundMe rep was prompt in looking into the matter, providing the link needed for me to submit the information in order to process the refund promptly. Within 3 days the monies were credited back to my credit card. What a breath of fresh air to see that competence, excellent customer service and prompt service actually DO exist! I will never hesitate to use this service in the future and will continue to recommend them for those seeking fund raisers for various purposes. Kudos to GoFundMe!!

I rarely give five stars to any company, but GofundMe earned this rating from me!! I highly recommend them as an online source to raise money for a specific project, family, or individual! Their customer service is superb, and quite honestly, one of the best I've ever encountered! Questions not answered by the extensive FAQ and Answer pages, receive almost immediate attention, with response times surprisingly quickly! I was unable to use my fund as planned and requested an expedited refund to my supporters, rather than waiting 30 days, which is established policy for accounts that don't have a withdrawal within that time-frame. Unfortunately, I forgot which e-mail address I was using at the time. Because of the back and forth communication, I worked with FIVE different Customer Support (Happiness) Specialists. EACH one of them addressed my specific problem and stuck with me until I resolved the issue! I was amazed that I didn't have to completely describe the problem to each and every one of them! Each one knew exactly what my problem was and worked with me to help solve it! Amazing! When I finally got the email address I needed, they IMMEDIATELY started issuing refunds to my contributors! No delays, no questions, nothing except refunds!!! How awesome can you get? They were so helpful and kind and never snooty or arrogant (like HOW could you forget your user name for heaven's sake?) and did everything possible to assist me! Imagine - customer service that actually provides customer service!

I could not be happier with the gofundme process! Thanks to this I was able to save my dogs life and now I'm able to help an employee after a horrific and,fetal car accident killing her mother ands her aunt and leaving her in the ICU for over 2 weeks!it's completely up to me to update post share tweet or instagram the campaign. I had a minor issue with updating my phone number I emailed the "happiness" team and within 15 minutes the issue was resolved with a one on one email. The young girl"leah" was extremely sweet and helpful. She was also very personable. I am 100% a gofundme supporter, and would recommend anyone who honestly needs them to buse them! They do takee a small percentage which is understanding as they need to help fund the program. The withdrawal process is simplified just like everything else making it that much easier to manage an account.m

I was a little skeptical at first, but setting up my campaign was easy and it let me express everything necessary for my campaign. I didn't feel limited in my involvement; I received emails for everything that happened with my account in real time. I was able to get my message out and raise MORE than my goal within 3 days because the message was so easy to spread. The only issue I had was there was a hold on my banking information so my money won't be processed in time for the surgery (what my campaign is for). Thankfully with the help of a GoFundMe representative, a request was immediately sent in and within minutes of the email reply, my account showed all the information it was supposed to.

My youngest sister found her husband passed away in his bed when she returned home from work on March 1. This was a shock and totally unexpected. They have three children with two in school and living at home. I was asking for help for my sister to help with finances while she is in the mourning period. Without her husbands support she needs our help until she can get everything together in her life. I just started the Go Fund Me after the funeral yesterday. We have raised $600.00 in two days. My goal was $8000.00 but any amount we can raise will help her have some peace of mind. I used the email contact for help on the Go Fund Me site. It took about 30 minutes to answer my questions. It was very helpful the information they gave me! I have been very pleased so far. I donated to the Go Fund Me for another person. There goal I believe was 10,000. but raised much more. This money raised really helped a family in an accident where mother was badly injured. Had to learn to walk all over after many operations. Plus she lost her 9 year old son, broken bones in her daughter. This Go Fund Me site was a blessing for this family. If you have a need start a campaign, it is easy.

I started a fund raiser on my own. Progress was very slow and my goal impossible. Folks encouraged me to use GoFundMe. I am far from a techy and feared it would be too complicated for me. I found that the directions were clear and very doable. I have had questions along the way and found the support great. I feel as though I have a team of friends supporting me. When I can’t find answers to my questions in print, I contact the team and get an answer within the hour. The team is professional and personal . They always provide their name so I know who I am working with. The tips they provide are very helpful. I always know what is going on activity wise and I am notified whenever a donation is made and encouraged to send a thank you. The percentage that goes to GoFundMe is a small price to pay for the amount of expertise you receive. I just wish I had a larger contact base!

Well my experience so far has been uplifting mentally and spiritually. It's just a nice idea to have developed someway to help those who need it most. This system disguised as a website or app ,,,can help others that want to help themselves. Personally it has only been a couple weeks that I have been on go fund me, and also I have not accumulated very much money but , the first week that I had been on I wasn't very active due to other obligations. Through experience I had spent a couple hours on here and that's when I was able to promote and get my personal ad out to a small variety of people and then the donations started to come in. All in all , if you put a little effort into it ,,,,it can go to extents you wouldn't believe it could ever reach

I reached out for support asking if there was a way to have my campaign on your GoFundMe Facebook page. I did this by email, and the response was speedy! I understand that sharing is the best way to get the word out about obtaining contributions, and the support representative explained there are many requests for the word getting out on your main page; however, she would bring the request to marketing. She replied several times to me where I felt like she went above and beyond with kind words! It was a very personal experience being heard on such sensitive matters-the sudden death of a hero in many peoples eyes who leaves behind a young daughter whose family made him an organ donor! He lost his life, but saved 100 others! Thank you for listening!

This is a top-notch company! My wife and I were recently the beneficiary of a fund raiser due to my wifes diagnosis of cancer. The funds raised were important in getting the proper treatment and taking care of day to day expenses because working was not an option during treatment. When it came time to receive the funds, I had a question and contacted customer service for help. They got back with me PROMPTLY and answered my questions. I'd donated money through GoFundMe in the past but I'd never raised any money through the organization until recently. This past summer, I decided to raise money for a very important cause. Unfortunately I fell sick during the campaign which forced me to put it on hold for a few months. Just recently I re-opened the campaign but was afraid I wouldn't be able to withdraw the money because of how much time had elapsed since it was first launched. I immediately contacted their staff personnel who greeted me with kind words to make sure I could withdraw the money and launch my event! GoFundMe, made the process really easy and for that I'm thankful.

I recently lost the only, and most important person in my life to me, my dad. I was convinced to start a go fund me and so far it’s grown to $1,000 in just a few days. I’m trying to reach more people to tell my story so I pray the marketing team picks me to showcase on their site because then your seen by millions as many use this great company. At least I know for sure now I will be able to buy him the best urn I like, while my dad only deserves the best. Also when I had a question I got a fast response from a wonderful woman named Katie who listened to my story as well, and offered an open ear if I ever need one. Top notch!

I don't really use this service often and when I do- it is to donate to what I feel is a "worthy" or "heartfelt" cause. I appreciate that the website lets you filter what kind of profile/cause you want to give to. I have never used it to ask for donations myself. I do think overall the idea is fantastic- to help others and it really brings us as a community together! I also appreciate the company will shut down ads/profiles that are scams and also refund donations given when it comes out that there is a scam.

I have used GoFundMe many different times to help raise funds for people in their time of need. It's simple to do and I trust that my money is going to the person I am wanting to help. They also provide updates to the donors about how much has been raised for your cause and allow an update on how the family/person is currently doing. Nice to have the updates.

GoFund me is an easy way to crowdfund online. The site makes it so easy to share through social media to get your cause out to the world. GoFundMe only takes a small percentage of the funds raised which is my opinion is reasonable. I was able to help a woman in need get her water turned back on and more by using GoFundme paired with social media platforms. Great Website.

I am very appreciative of the staff at GoFundMe for their understanding and assistance to rectify an error that I made in my donation. I inadvertently selected the wrong campaign for my donation. After a few unsuccessful attempts at resolving this issue with the campaign I donated to in error I contacted GoFundMe and they were very responsive, helpful, understanding and assisted me in correcting my error. What could have been a very unpleasant experience for me turned out to be a positive one all thanks to the staff at GoFundMe.

Celine was incredibly helpful and supportive and prompt with replies. Even if there was nothing to report, Celine replied by email that she was working on the situation which really helped ease potential stress! Once the banking was set up properly, everything has been easy and deeply appreciated. This has made a big difference in our financial stress levels as my husband moves closer to his surgery.

Everything went great until it wanted a photo. After several tries at downloading one I was ready to forget the whole thing. I sat here and cried. Finally I reached out to the HAPPINESS TEAM for help. They sent an email so I could send them the photo but for some reason that would not work for me ether. Now I kept sending calls for help the wrong way. Crying the whole time they sent me an email telling me what I was doing wrong. In just a few easy steps after that all of my problems went away and I was started in GO FUND ME. Thank you so very much for your staying with this old coot.

Easy to get started using the site, but the flow of content authoring, fees, coordinating withdrawals with beneficiaries, etc. is not immediately clear without needing to consult piecemeal documentation. Lacking on very basic web content management features like publishing, rich text, resizable images, and mixed content. Also short on configuration of notifications; I wouldn't mind not getting notified, for example, every time someone donates. Support is extremely helpful and responsive. Overall, good value despite the usage challenges due to relative simplicity and very reasonable fees charged.

I was in the process of making yet another donation on your site, and accidentally reversed the amounts of the donation and the handling fee. I contacted GoFundMe immediately online, and had the charges cancelled so that I could make the intended donation. I was told it might take 6-7 business days for the transaction to be completed, but it took about 12 hours! Good job!!!

I had a small issue with a potential donor not seeing her donation show up. I asked for help to make sure she wasn't donating twice and got an immediate response. Quick, professional, courteous...and solved the issue instantly. Very impressive customer service. I was able to tell the donor within minutes that she could safely re-enter her data (her cell phone had dropped the call while she was donating).

Friends set up a gofundme on my behalf as I was recently diagnosed with two different kinds of breast cancer that has started to spread. I’m a small, self-employed single mother. When we tried to set up the withdrawal section , we were having difficulties and the customer happiness representatives were extremely helpful and helped get it straitened out very quickly. For this I was very grateful as I do have much going on in my life right now, between trying to work, getting treatments, tests and just running a household.

My go fund me experience was, with every question I had I got a prompt answer that was helpful everytime. I would use this program again if I ever need help to raise money for something again. When I had trouble closing my go fund me the lady that answerd my question did it for me. That was so great of her to do that for me and one less worry for me to try and do.

This was my first experience with GoFundMe, I set up the account for someone else after a family member passed away. The money was to be transferred directly to Foundation on behalf of the loved one. I contacted the customer service team to ask how to do this and for a few other questions. I was so impressed with how fast they responded, how positive, understanding , professional, and willing they were to email me and the beneficiary of the foundation to make this work. I am doing this fundraiser for a friend who is dying of cancer. He changed his mind at first and I had to work with GFM to put the fundraiser on hold and then turn it back on. They were extremely responsive and sympathetic to the situation. I then had to work with them and the wife to set up the bank info and the beneficiary. Again, they were quick to answer any and all questions. Most of this was going on while I was on the road traveling, so I wasn't always able to get to my e-mails. It has been a great experience so far and we have brought in much needed funding for my friend's care.

It was the first time I've ever used GoFundMe and it was a pretty positive experience. I put in the wrong name by mistake and deactivated the account thinking the transaction was fine. When it wasn't I contacted GoFundMe and help was nearly immediate. The process was a little lengthy (due to payment complications) but customer service was very good.

I like the way GoFundMe works, and I like the various forms of data provided to document donations. However, I do not like the way the help/contact us feature works. It tends to circle back and back to the same window. I couldn't get to an online chat feature, and there's no person at the end of the phone. I missed something I should have seen, but when that happens, it's extremely difficult to get out of the loop. When I didn't see the answer the first time, I didn't see it the second or the third or the fourth, either. That's how it usually works. I don't get frustrated easily, but this frustrated me.

I did not understand how this program worked so for me it was the wrong approach. I thought you just posted your needs and it went into some data base where it was looked at but I realize now you have to be on social media, which at 84 I am not nor do I ever want to be. Also, I wanted to do this for my grand daughter who did not know it. She would probably not like the idea of asking for money if she knew I did this. We are a family of take care of yourselves. However, there is nothing wrong with legitimate causes for people. I reached out the help section of Go Fund Me and got an immediate reply by a nice person who was very thoughtful and told me that the best way to reach people was through social media and your friends by email. My friends are old people on SS so I would never expect them to give any of their hard earned money to help my family,, when they have families of their own in need. So I thank your people for the kind response and I am sure this is a good program for some people who have more out reach than I do.
