Founded in 1979, Mechanical Protection Plan (MPP Co., Inc.) provides third-party extended vehicle warranties and other protection products through auto dealerships in ten U.S. states. All of its warranty plans, technically known as vehicle service contracts (VSCs), are insurance-backed by AM Best A-rated carrier Old United Casualty Company, which, along with MPP, is part of Old United Insurance Group.

Based in Kansas, MPP supplies consumers with quality, extensive, and flexible service contracts for new, used, and certified pre-owned vehicles. It also offers a variety of other protection products, including the following:

  • Dealer limited warranties
  • GAP coverage (GAP waivers and GAP insurance)
  • Lease wear coverage
  • Mechanical service contracts
  • Paint and fabric protection
  • Paintless dent repair
  • Pre-paid maintenance
  • Theft protection products
  • Tire/wheel road hazard
  • Powersport, marine, and recreational vehicle (RV) extended warranties

Only participating dealers sell MPP warranties and other products. They can be rolled into your initial vehicle purchase financing or added soon after your initial purchase. Cars must pass an inspection and fall under the following requirements to be eligible for MPP warranty coverage:

  • Max mileage — 90,000
  • Max age — eight model years old

For covered repairs, Mechanical Protection Plan extended service contract holders only have to pay their plan deductible, rather than the full repair amount. Repairs can be handled nationwide at approved dealerships or any ASE certified auto repair shop. Helping to limit your out of pocket expenses, the repair team will contact MPP for authorization, and covered repairs will be directly paid for by the warranty company.

Since its inception, MPP has served over 5 million customers and paid out more than $400 million. Currently, it serves a customer base of over 1.5 million.

Variety of Warranty Plans

MPP offers vehicle service contracts, sometimes referred to as extended warranties

It's not a factory warranty. It's not really an extended warranty, bumper to bumper, or powertrain warranty policy.

Unlike a factory warranty, a vehicle service contract is automatically included when you buy a car. It's a separate protection contract. The payment structure includes premiums and deductibles. You can have a VSC even when your warranty has run out.

When you buy a new car, it comes covered by a manufacturer's warranty. An MPP extended service contract covers potential issues than a vehicle's basic manufacturer coverage does. This company's protection plans include parts and labor on over 1,500 components (Platinum) when they fail due to regular use, wear, and tear.

Are you worried that an extended warranty will leave you paying for coverage that you already get for free through your car's remaining warranty policy?

MPP's website states, "You never pay for double coverage; if you purchase an extended service contract during the manufacturer’s warranty, that coverage is taken into consideration when rates for your contract are determined."

If you shop at a dealership network that offers a Mechanical Protection Plan, your selection of plans and products will vary based on your location and the car you are purchasing.

All Mechanical Protection Plan options include the following benefits:

  • Emergency roadside assistance and towing benefit
  • Disappearing deductible option
  • Rental car reimbursement — up to $35 per day

There are multiple coverage levels for both new and used vehicles. The more expensive and elite plans include optional add-on packages, which add benefits like maintenance services, including scheduled oil changes and tire rotation service.

MPP Plan Customization Packages

MPP vehicle service contracts are customizable. Adding one of the following service packages will give you ongoing, prepaid maintenance:

  • Elite — Covers components that require routine replacement, like lightbulbs, belts, hoses, wiper blades, and even your car's battery and brake pads
  • Care — Covers manufacturer recommended maintenance, including oil and oil filter changes, tire rotations, and chassis lubrication
  • Care Elite — Combines Elite plan's coverage of commonly replaced components with Care's ongoing maintenance coverage

MPP Used Car Plans

Mechanical Protection Plan offers several different varieties of vehicle service contracts for used and certified pre-owned cars.

Bronze Powertrain Covers major mechanical components in these systems:
  • Engine (diesel or gas)
  • Transmission/transaxle
  • Front and rear-wheel drive
Silver Powertrain + Extras All bronze coverage plus components in five more systems:
  • Steering
  • Brakes
  • Electrical
  • Factory-installed AC
  • Front suspension
Gold Stated Coverage All Bronze and Silver coverage, plus many in-depth added components that aren't covered in Bronze or Silver, but are in the systems covered. For example:
  • The Silver plan includes 11 components of a vehicle's suspension system, but only the Gold plan will pay for repairs of the suspension strut mount and bearings.
  • The Silver Plan covers 8 braking system components; however, there are more than 8 parts that could break. You will need Gold to cover parts and labor costs for the following brake components: brake seals, gaskets, pressure modulator/valve dump, brake pump motor assembly, and the brake accumulator.
Platinum Exclusionary coverage for most systems Platinum is MPP's exclusionary policy covering most mechanical and electrical components. It includes everything in Bronze, Silver, and Gold, but adds coverage for these components:
  • On-board computer system
  • Fuel system
  • Cooling system
  • Factory-installed audio/sound/navigation
  • Factory-installed comfort and convenience
Platinum Wrap Bolsters existing factory warranty coverage Combines with a used car's remaining factory warranty to provide broader coverage for most components.

MPP New Car Coverage Plans

Warranty coverage for a new car purchase adds more protection to your factory warranty. MPP's warranty policies for new cars cover parts and labor on more than 1,500 components.

Platinum When buying a new car, a third-party car warranty protects your finances from failures not covered by your factory bumper-to-bumper warranty. This basic exclusionary warranty covers most electrical and mechanical components.
Platinum Elite Adds coverage for one battery replacement, one set of front and rear brake pads/shoes, fuses, headlights, lightbulbs, engine belts and hoses, one replacement set of windshield wiper blades or inserts, one wheel alignment service.
Platinum Care Adds regular covered maintenance to the Platinum.
Platinum Care Elite Everything in Platinum Elite, plus CARE — regularly scheduled maintenance, including oil changes and tire rotations.
Luxury Plus This warranty package is designed for new luxury vehicle purchases. Additional benefits provide coverage for the following car problems:
  • Battery
  • Brake pad coverage
  • Electrical
  • Enginge belts and hoses
  • Headlamps
  • Paintless dent repair
  • Tire/wheel road hazard
  • Wheel alignment
  • Windshield repair
  • Windshield wiper blades
Included in your Luxury Plus contract is a membership to Road America Motor Club, Inc. Perks of this membership include the following:
  • Car theft reward
  • Collision assistance
  • Custom trip routing
  • Emergency message relay
  • Emergency travel reimbursement
  • Key replacement assistance
  • Lockout assistance

Alternative Service Contracts

In addition to car warranties, a variety of alternative protection products are available through a Mechanical Protection Plan. These include the following:

  • Wear and tear coverage for leased vehicles
  • Anti-theft protection (OnGard or Skylink)
  • MPP Motor Club
  • RV coverage
  • Boat and other marine vehicle coverage
  • Heavy-duty and commercial vehicle coverage

Roadside Assistance

Your vehicle's extended service plan even comes with emergency roadside assistance, covering $100 max per service, like the following:

  • Battery jump-start assistance
  • Spare tire help
  • Lockout assistance
  • Fuel delivery when you run out of gas
  • Towing services

Financing Options

Another thing that you have to consider when looking for mechanical coverage offered by an extended warranty is how you will pay for it. With MPP vehicle service contracts, you have two payment options. If you are financing, you can include it in your loan. Or you can finance separately and pay out over your term's plan.

Disappearing Deductible Option

With a vehicle service plan from MPP, you may be eligible for a Disappearing Deductible plan if you have the covered mechanical failures repaired at the dealership where you purchased it.

Refundable and Transferable Policies

Mechanical Protection Plan's services can be canceled or transferred. So, if you decide you don't want the policy anymore, you sell or trade-in your car before your contract ends, you aren't stuck paying for something that you no longer need.

Cancellation Policy

If you decide to cancel within 30 days of your purchase, you are eligible for a full refund, if you haven't made a claim yet.

After your 30-day grace period has ended, you can still cancel. Your refund will be less a $50 fee and prorated based on how much time has elapsed. This policy is helpful if you wish to trade-in your vehicle or sell it before your contract ends.

Transfer Policy

MPP plans are fully transferable, meaning that you can sell your car and transfer the coverage to its new owner. The ability to offer buyers a vehicle already covered by an extended warranty can help your listing stand out.

The Bad

  • Limited Availability
  • Online Presence
  • Confusing Plan Structure
  • Contact Dealer for Cost

Limited Availability

This third-party warranty company offers its service contracts through partner dealerships in just ten states. Eligibility is minimal.

Unfortunately, MPP service contracts only available to consumers making a vehicle purchase at participating dealers in the following states:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Mexico
  • Texas

They don't have to be repaired in those states, though. Your MPP contract can cover repairs at nationwide dealerships and authorized ASE certified repair facilities.

Online Presence

This company has been serving customers since 1979. While it does have a website, it has very little detectable online presence. The lack of social proof or adequate online reputation may make some potential customers wary of working with MPP.

Confusing Plan Structure

Hours of reading this company's website can leave you still confused about which plans are which. Sometimes, the same policy is referenced with a similar but different name on different site pages and even on-site brochures.

Many MPP service contracts offer very similar coverage. It's hard to compare and understand the differences between new car policies and lease policies and used car vs. certified pre-owned coverage plans.

In the same vein, some warranty plans are only one or two coverage items away from the next. Choosing between nearly-identical coverage combinations can be confusing for car shoppers, especially if they are in the dealership's F&I office.

However, interested consumers can view all plan details, including contract examples, on MPP's website. Additionally, dealership employees are trained on MPP products and your purchase won't be eligible for all options.

If you are still confused, you can always call Mechanical Protection Plan's customer service directly to avoid paying for a warranty that doesn't offer the protection you want.

Contact Dealer for Cost

How much does it cost to get coverage from MPP?

Quotes aren't available online. Pricing depends on your locale, the dealership, the car that you are getting, its condition and current mileage, and the plan you choose. Whether you want basic vehicle protection, or a more extensive plan, including regular maintenance like oil changes and tire rotation, will affect your plan's cost.

Is the car new enough that the manufacturer's warranty still covers it

Not to worry.

While the FTC warns consumers against vehicle service contracts that don't provide coverage until your manufacturer's warranty has expired, with MPP, that's not the case. You won't be paying for double coverage, either. This outside warranty company factors any existing manufacturer warranty coverage into your MPP coverage rate.

However, since online information about the company's plans, costs, and policies is limited, it is essential to check for eligible dealers, who have more specific information. Ask lots of questions when you get there and make sure you know whether a vehicle service contract is right for you.

The Bottom Line

MPP car warranties offer car buyers financial protection against mechanical issues due to normal wear and tear (not covered by your car insurance). Only available from select dealerships in ten states, this company offers eligible car buyers pretty standard, reasonable policies and excels in customizable options.

While comparing plans can cause some confusion, MPP offers car shoppers lots of options. However, its add-on protection services and car care options are both unique and welcome products.

MPP's extended auto warranty policies can help consumers budget for inevitable and costly mechanical repairs. Unfortunately, to be eligible for an MPP product, you have to shop at specific dealerships in a limited number of states and get a vehicle less than eight years old.

I had this on our 2009 Nissan Altima and it was a godsend. We had our share of electrical issues that probably shouldn't have happened but they were paid for 100%. They even paid for a tow that my insurance company had already paid for. I told them it was paid by insurance and they said "that's OK we'll still pay for the tow". So I ended up making money on getting the car towed. I guess the only people that post here are probably shills for other companies which isn't very fair to a company that's been around for a long time and as far as my personal experience goes they are responsive and of value if you have a problem with a vehicle out of warranty. You may never use it but if you do this company is reliable and responsive.

Nothing

I bought a car, and bought the silver plan. Car broke down with in the warranty. Sat on side of road for 3 hours. Tow truck driver was swerving out of his lane. Almost in two accidents. My plan is covering the repairs. But they refuse to get me a rental car which I'm covered. Can't get to work. Don't buy this coverage from this company. Will be filing against this company.

One star is giving them too much credit. I purchased my vehicle October 2021 and I purchased gap insurance with MPP CO in the midst that my vehicle is involved in an auto accident. In December 2023, my vehicle was involved in an auto accident with a drunk driver. My insurance paid their amount and I contacted MPP Co for my Gap warranty claim on January 10, 2024. MPP requested over 50 documents, all of which was supplied. After 2 months of constant communication efforts, I finally received an email regarding the warranty status which indicated I would only receive the prorated gap warranty funds of $396. Mike R, the claims adjuster cancelled my policy without discussing the claims finding with me. He is rude and created a false narrative and deducted a $2850 amount blaming the insurance company. This amount should have been used to payoff the remaining balance of my vehicle. There was not a $2850 adjustment on any of my documents such as the vehicle valuation, that he claims. They gave me the run around from day 1 and didn't want to pay the policy. This company is a scam and after reading the reviews and complaints, I'm not the only person they have done this to.

Only put 1 star. If I could do zero I would. I purchased a car from ford in August . Paid for the extended warranty. November 11 2023 I traded the car in . I canceled my warranty. No response 2 weeks goes by. I receive an email stating they need proof. Fine, I wait a week. I receive my paid in full letter from my bank . I upload that as a pdf. Again now we are past Xmas 2023. Now in Jan . I get an email asking to click on a link. Fine I do that. Nothing for 3 weeks . Come to Jan 31 I get an email stating a check was mailed to my house. It’s now Feb 13th . I have zero mail issues and no resolution. This company is piss poor customer service. All lip service and this may have to turn into a legal dealer with the dealer.

ZERO STARS!!! Purchased the Platnium plan with the purchase of my used 2018 Chevy Equinox. Exactly one year later the brakes go out as I’m driving on the highway resulting in me needing $5,000 worth of work. Me thinking the warranty will cover it, oh I was so wrong. There were 3 oil changes on the car in that one year and they still denied the claim saying I didn’t get the proper maintenance on the car. And since we never received the service contract we didn’t know that you’re required to keep service records. Never will I ever waste my money on this crap again. Total SCAM!!!

Worst company as far as follow through! I have tried getting a refund for a cancelation for a month. I have been given links that don't work, excuses about, that's how we send refunds and no follow-up from anyone. This company is a D- at best. I have no idea why Ford Motor Company uses them, they are subpar at best.

I would give no stars if I could. Was kept at the dealership an extra hour while they tried to get me to sign up for this, after repeatedly saying no. They manipulated me into thinking it was a much lower price than actual so I finally agreed so I could just buy the stupid car. I realized I was an idiot when I got home, and have been trying to cancel this warranty ever since. Starting day 1, which was September 30, 2020, I have called 5 times and its always an excuse. I was told I'd get an email from them to cancel, I waited a week for that, but nothing. I called the dealership back and was eventually given a phone number, after much arguing and more lies, clearly the dealerships are very much invested in selling us these scam warranties. I called and got the link within an hour and put in the cancellation request. I was told I would get a 100% refund since it was only 7 days after I purchased it. I waited a few weeks...and nothing happened. I called back and was told they could see the cancellation request and it was processing. I waited a couple more weeks... I called back and was told it HAD been cancelled but the money was in a reserve account for the dealership. I was told they'd look into it and call me back. No call came, of course. I waited a few days and called back and was told the check was being mailed the next day. Here it is 15 days later, and I'm about to call back AGAIN because it still hasn't been refunded. I'm assuming maybe I need a lawyer? I currently have no warranty coverage but they still have my $2700, if that's not a scam, I don't know what is. NEVER BUY FROM THIS COMPANY OR LET YOUR DEALERSHIP PRESSURE YOU INTO THESE WARRANTIES!!!!!

As an RV repaired company we are appalled by This company and their genuine lack of concern for their clients! They sent out an under qualified adjuster who had a serious attitude not only with us but with our clients to diagnose and air conditioning during 50゚ temperatures. When we explained we cannot show adequate amp draws in 50゚ temperatures they denied our claim. When we appealed for A-day of at least 70゚ temperature they told us that perhaps they could send another just are in the middle of August! By then our clients will be burning up and we'll have already replaced the AC out of pocket! It is obvious all this warranty company Is intrested in is getting your money! bad job MPP. Perhaps you should pull all your concerning and want to help you statements off your website to not further Mislead clients!

Had stabilitrack light, traction control light, chugged at idle and check engine light come on while the warranty was still good. Took it in to the place that I bought it, Husker Chevrolet, it had multiple cylinder misfires, mainly cylinder 2. They suggested an engine replacement. MPP warranty company said they wanted to do the bare minimum and just replaced the one cylinder(#2)/one bent push rod. One month later cylinder 1 does the same thing, lights, check engine, chugging, all of it. Husker Chevrolet suggests finishing the tune up by replacing the rest of the spark plugs. Did that. 4 months later all those lights come back on again and it started chugging at idle again. Multiple cylinder misfire AGAIN! This time with cylinder 7 being the main culprit. All the spark plugs had black sludge all over them again and 3 quarts low on oil when I just had an oil change one month ago! Husker Chevrolet said to come back if the SAME problem happened and they would make the warranty company do what they suggested from the get go. MPP won't fix it!!

WARNING!!! A few months back a bought a vehicle from this dealership along with a MPP 2 year extended warranty for an additional $2,000 (Silver Plan). The staff at Peoria Acura assured me that MPP was a great warranty company. Overall it was a very good purchase experience. However now 5 months later a simple window motor went out on my rear driver side. So I thought no worries its just a simple window motor & I have the MPP extended warranty. So I called MPP and they told me that a simple window motor is not covered on the $2,000 Silver Plan I purchased! What!! In the past, I have had other third party extended warranties before that were much less in price that did cover a simple window motor; but NOT MPP. So my advice is when you are buying a vehicle at this dealership & your in the finance office signing papers stay CLEAR of this MPP warranty company that Peoria Acura does business with and find a legitimate third party extended warranty company online. Last, when I spoke with the rep at MPP his method of handling this issue was to tell me I can cancel my extended warranty coverage and they will reimburse me the difference. SAVE YOUR $$$$ & don't buy this MPP Warranty Coverage when at Peoria Acura or at any dealership. MPP is just after your hard earn money!

This company is not good, do not buy from them. If you want used parts put on your car with a 2-3 week "down time" that they need to send an inspector, inspector is late, we will give you a rental, but FYI the rental is only partially paid, hey we have a used part that we are going to ship to the mechanic to save some money and by the way it will take about 5 days to ship the part....and on and on and on. Really? If any real company did this and you could actually review them like products on Amazon, they would go bankrupt in a couple of days. I am warning you, do not fall prey to them.

I was told when purchasing the plan that my tires would be covered for road hazards. They told me I would get a replacement tire, same make and style. I took my tire to the dealership and was given a “comparable” tire but not the same tire I purchased with the truck. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT. When it comes time to fulfill their end of the bargain - they back out and crawfish like crooks. Shouldn’t have expected anything less from a Berkshire Hathaway company...what a joke!

Totally unfair and misleading. My vehicle had a circuit board failure which shorted out my tail light assembly. This would be a common repair and the purpose for investing in a warranty policy. Categorizing a tail light assembly as a “lamp” so that they can exclude it from coverage is unfair and misleading. A good reason to not use this company or other warranty companies!

Purchase 2007 Tundra from dealership. Purchased Bronz plan. Less than 100 and 4 days later VSE light is flashing. Diagnosis; Secondary injector air pump. Repair cost; $1,900. Dealer callsMPP who says not covered. MPP's warranties are completely worthless. I do not and will not recommend to others. I hold the same sentiment for the dealership; Texas Toyota in Grapevine, TX.

Needed a new wheel bearing on my RAV 4 which was covered by the MPP warranty. Their rep required I get a new set of tires prior for him to make a warranty decision. Got the new tires they just OK'd the warranty claim after I bought the tires but did not come to look at the vehicle. This process took four days to get approval, it took two hours for the dealership to make the repair. Buyer Beware. Trying to cancel another vehicle policy, they want me to jump thru hoops again.

I have called twice to cancel service. I was told both times that I would receive an email from them within 2 hours for a link to cancel the service. Both times, the emails came later than 24 hours later. Both times a broken link which did not work was provided. I will call once again to attempt receiving the money I am owed in full. Reading reviews of this company does not make me optimistic, however. Admittedly, I did not submit any claims while having their protection plan. It appears there are much better companies out there to choose from when looking at extended warranty companies.

This is the worst customer service I have ever had, "Matt" and the amount this plan would cover while I was stranded is rediculous. Changed the routine mileage just as I was going for my last covered oil and filter change. Did not read the fine print in the contract . . . Had the plan for 5 years, was a very expensive purchase for 8 oil changes. They would not cover the first oil change because the vehicle did not have 5k miles on the odometer.

Waiting for months for a final answer and I pay out. My insurance made a mistake and didn't pay full amount so MPP decided that they needed to wait for the additional 15$ so they put you on the back burner for another month and make you constantly question your existence.
