Checking Account Options

BB&T Bank offers five different checking account options. Each option provides a number of useful features and include there own set of restrictions. Those that bank with BB&T can upgrade their checking account or open a new account online without having to visit a physical branch. All BB&T checking accounts come with paper statement capabilities. Additionally, all BB&T checking accounts offer online and mobile app banking with personal financial management tools through its app, U by BB&T. Consumers also have access to BB&T ATMs. Each checking account option is broken down as follows:

  • BB&T Fundamentals Checking: A basic account with a fixed monthly fee that's easy on almost any budget. Includes a $5 monthly maintenance fee.
  • BB&T Bright Checking: For those who intend to set up direct deposit for a paycheck or other regular deposits. Includes a $12/month maintenance fee, but there are ways to avoid it.
  • Elite Gold: Designed for those who have a mortgage or other high-balance account with BB&T. Requires a $30 monthly maintenance fee but it can be waived if certain restrictions are met.
  • Student Checking: Perfect for a student who wants stress-free checking with no minimum balance requirement. There is no monthly maintenance fee.
  • Senior Checking: Specifically for those who are at least 55 years old, want free checks and easily-waived maintenance fees. There is a $10 monthly maintenance fee, however there are ways to avoid having to pay it.

Savings Account Options

There are also two different types of savings accounts available to those that bank with BB&T. Similar to the varying checking account options, each savings account is designed to fit specific consumer needs and comes with its own benefits and restrictions. Both of the BB&T savings account options include combined statements, online banking, mobile banking and account alerts. The accounts are broken down as follows:

  • BB&T eSavings: Designed for clients looking for competitive interest rates. There is no minimum deposit and interest is compounded daily.
  • Investor's Deposit Account: This account meets the needs of investors seeking premium interest rates. There is a minimum deposit requirement of $10,000 and interest is compounded in a tiered system with premium money market rates compounded daily.

For those looking for investment options, BB&T offers a wide range of services that are almost guaranteed to help individuals save for retirement or other milestones. Consumers can plan accordingly and make sure that they are staying on track to their specific savings goals.

Certificates of Deposit (CDs)

BB&T Bank offers four certificate of deposit (CD) rate options, allowing consumers to gain interest on a lump-sum deposit left in the account for a specific period of time. When looking for CD options, it is best to find the highest interest rates available and that you qualify for. All BB&T Bank CD options have no monthly fees, automatic renewal, guaranteed rates, and FDIC insurance. CD rate options include:

  • Personal CD Rates: Personal CDs require a minimum opening deposit of $1,000 for terms greater than 31 days or $2,500 for terms of 7 to 31 days. For whatever term you choose (7 days or up to 60 months) you will receive fixed rates.
  • Can't Lose CD Rates: This rate requires a minimum opening deposit of $1,000 with a 30-month term. Protecting your investments whether rates rise or fall, this option can help you earn more money overall.
  • Stepped Rate CD Rates: With the stepped rate CD, you can enjoy rising rates in any market with rates that are guaranteed to rise once every year. A minimum opening deposit of $1,000 is required with a 48-month term.

BB&T Bank's variety of rate options allows consumers to choose the best option for them, helping them make money on their investments.

Credit Cards

In addition to traditional banking services, BB&T Bank offers three credit card options including, the Low APR Credit Card, the Cash Rewards Credit Card, and the Travel Rewards Credit Card. Each card is backed by Visa, and offers average rates with no annual fee. BB&T's rewards cards offer competitive rewards compared to other credit union credit card offerings.

Mobile App

BB&T Bank allows consumers to bank anywhere on their phone with the U by BB&T mobile app. The app is available on iPhone, iPad, and Android and is ranked #1 in Customer Satisfaction with Mobile Banking Apps among National Banks by J.D. Power.

On the app consumers can pay bills, send or receive money, make transfers, check their credit score, and locate bank branches, among other helpful benefits and features.

The Bad

  • Limited Insurance
  • Limited Availability
  • Monthly Maintenance Fee
  • Customer Reviews

Limited Insurance

For those who wish to purchase insurance can do so through BB&T. However, the insurance services are not FDIC-insured, nor are they guaranteed by the bank. The insurance is also not backed by any state or federal government agency and may go down in value over time.

Limited Availability

BB&T's service can only be found in sixteen states across the U.S. This eliminates a large portion of the nation's population and is therefore not an option for a number of prospective consumers. Those who wish to bank with BB&T will need to reside in one of the following states:

  • Alabama
  • Washington D.C.
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Maryland
  • North Carolina
  • New Jersey
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia

Monthly Maintenance Fee

The majority of BB&T accounts require some sort of monthly maintenance fee. While some accounts have stipulations that can be met in order to avoid this charge, that is not an option for all account types. These monthly maintenance fees can typically be found on the basic forms of banking and consumers should be aware of these charges.

Customer Reviews

BB&T Bank reviews are limited, but the majority of them are negative with customers only awarding the company one star. Of these reviews, customers most often mention poor customer service and complicated banking overall.

gavel

The Bottom Line

BB&T offers a number of the standard banking and lending services that are common within the industry, but they provide several options that are designed to help each consumer get the most out of their banking experience. Those that bank with BB&T can choose from a variety of checking, savings, and CD rate options to best fit their needs. In addition, consumers can choose from various credit card options with competitive rewards, average rates, and no annual fees.

Overall BB&T Bank is comparable to many other banks in the industry; however, based on customer reviews we would recommend researching other banks before making a final decision, as many customers have noted that they have not been satisfied with their experience with the bank.

If you bank, or have banked, with BB&T, please tell us about your experience by leaving a review.

We have used BB+T for sometime now and we really like their services and staff. We use the check deposit by phone feature all the time and that is a game changer especially during the pandemic. My wife uses the text alerts to keep up with all of our purchases and it has saved us when there was a purchase not made by us and was stopped and fixed immediately. The customer service has always been helpful and any issues that we have ever had.

Carolyn C M at the Aberdeen , North Carolina Branch is a wonderful asset to BB&T. She is so professional, thorough, and very efficient. It was so easy doing business with her. She is the reason I am bringing more accounts to this company. In a day where Customer Service is hard to find she exceeds your expectations! Thank you.

Well, first off I'd like to say I've had a checking and savings account with BB&T for 15 years. In these 15 years I haven't had much issue with BB&T and the staff I interact with in-person are always delightful. I'm a young adult who never took student loans and never used credit to this point in my life, meaning I do not have an existing credit report. Late to the game, I know, to get a credit card and begin building credit but the time has finally come. I go to my local BB&T branch to discuss applying for a credit card, I submit the paper work. I wait. I ended up having to submit the paperwork, 3 or 4 times? According to BB&T's credit department, my 'credit score' had an error code that suggests fraud. Well, I call Equifax, who they require me to speak with, and both times I speak with Equifax I am clearly told I do not have an existing credit report whatsoever. I inquire as to why I have an error code on a credit report that doesn't exist. They can't help me. I return to BB&T to inform them there could not possibly be an error code on a non-existent credit report. Do they care? No. BB&T refuses to give me a credit card despite the fact that I have no credit score to speak of, and despite the fact I have 15 years of business with them and they could reference my banking history for their felt need for ‘proof’ on eligibility. How, pray tell, am I supposed to build credit when I’m not given the opportunity for even a basic credit card and have no need for loans? I’m looking to take my business elsewhere, because clearly BB&T doesn’t care much to keep the people they have worked with for many years.

Do not ket the new name Truist fool you into believing these people are trustworthy. Had a new car for 16 hours before a young girl turned in front of me and totalled it. Her insurance and my insurance had to sit and wait for the loan to " process through the normal channels" for months. Meanwhile, I buy another car after weeks of a rental. Tuist/bb&t wanted payment for a car that the insurance companies cant settle the claim on because they still had not processed the loan. I called and called to make sure they were updated. I have notes of who I spoke to and when. They still sent it in to the credit bureau as over 30 days late. Do not expect any compassion with these people. Nor even, just common sense. Because after it was all over they sent me a check for overpayment. Geez.

Do not bank with this bank. I opened my business account with them about a month ago and was not told they don't trust you for 90 days. Any checks or card payments you put through get put on hold for 9 days each for 90 days. I have good credit and have banked with SECU for 30 years, I have ask multiple people about this and no one has ever heard of it. I have had my own business since 2015 and the bank I dealt with in Asheboro NEVER did this. She tells me its to combat identity theft. I don't believe that at all. So I do not recommend them and I guess I will continue were I was. thank goodness I had since enough not to close the other. If anyone can recommend one in Thomasville I would be grateful. Although this was a recommendation also, ugh... The worse service EVER!

This bank is horrible. I went by one day to get some penny rollers and to change out some Pennies for cash. The woman said that if I didn’t have a account she couldn’t give me cash and couldn’t give me any penny rollers! I asked her “isn’t there a change shortage?” She said “yes but without a account we can’t help you”. Wow. Is all I could say. Also, right before that I drove around and got penny rollers from that exact bank! Like 5 minutes before! These people are something else. Banks are supposed to give out penny rollers and you don’t have to have a account to get them. Also you don’t have to have a account to change out coins for cash. The place was in Norton/Wise Va. She was very unprofessional. I would give the bank zero stars if I could.

This is the most awful bank to deal with. Hassle, hassle, hassle. Do not ever do business with this bank. I have tried to close out my checking account for three days now & I still have to wait one more day. Day 1- I go inside branch to close the acct. I closed it out with the branch manager who stated for me to call the next day to make sure it was closed out. It was not. Day 2- I called customer service to close the acct. After holding for 20 minutes, someone finally answered. After answering 10 questions to verify I was who I say I was, the csr told me that I had to go to branch to close the acct because I couldn't verify the email address I had on the act from 3 years ago. Day 3- I go to the branch which is clear across the other side of my town. When I opened the acct, there was a branch closer but has since closed down. Anyway, after waiting 20 min. For someone to help me, I finally got someone who happens to be the person from day 1 that supposedly closed the acct but didn't. So we will see if the acct actually gets closed this time since I have to call back tomorrow to verify its closed. Also I've tried to make a deposit in the past into my mothers acct to help her since its hard for her to make deposits during the say cause she works. I wasn't allowed to make the DEPOSIT cause I wasn't on her acct. I can see if I was trying to make a withdrawal but a deposit. Come on that's ridiculous. There's been other crap that's happened but you get the point. Trying to do anything where this bank is involved is nothing but a problem & a big hassle.

I do not recommend banking with BB&T for your business needs. They lie just to get your business! I asked specific questions to ensure this checking account would be compatible with my business needs and was told it was. After signing up I attempted to do these transaction, that I was previously told were possible, and couldn’t figure it out. I then reached out to their supposed and was told “with this business account these types of transactions weren’t an option.” THEN WHY WAS I TOLD IT WAS BEFORE?!?! I 100% would NOT have chosen this account if I would have been TOLD THE TRUTH! Also, they did nothing to try and resolve the issue or see if there is a different type of account that would work. They simply acted like my needs were not important and moved on. I am VERY dissatisfied and will be finding a new bank that can TRULY meet my banking needs.

Worst bank ever!! I have the BB&T app. I knew I had 2 withdrawals coming up. I planned a transfer from my other non-BB&T account to my BB&T checking account to cover these automated withdrawals. I went to bed with positive money in the account that next morning I check my account to verify my transfer went through and the bank charged me $72 in overdraft fees. I called I was informed the transfer did not occur until 1:30am and the withdrawals came out at 12am so my account was charged overdraft fees(2) and that’s the policy of BB&T bank. In under two hours my account went from positive to negative to positive creating non reversible overdraft fee of $72 or $36 per transaction even though the money was available. They intentionally set the processing payment system to scam their customers. I would highly recommend avoiding this bank, Clear example of issues with the big banks stealing money from people and justifying themselves. Report: FDIC Data Shows that Banks Collected $11.45 Billion in Overdraft Fees in 2017 By using unfair business practices. AVOID AT ALL COST!!!

I have asked numerous times over the years in person, on the phone, email and via automated system for this account to not be allowed to have overdraft protection for a fee of $36 per transaction. I have had numerous conversations via customer care, email and in person about this situation, have filled out a form in person which there seems to be no record of. Yet there is record of my email correspondence. They refuse to remove the insufficient fund fees and keep telling me they need to do more research. I'm done with this bank account and will only use my primary account with a credit union in which Ive never had an issue with in the past 20 years. I've also noticed on Bankrate.com it leads to believe they offer free checking. I have been charged $5 mo with this account, while my credit union charges nothing no matter my balance.

I first opened an account with bbt when I was 16 years old. At the time I didn't know anything about banking and only opened an account there because my father had an account there. From the very beginning every part of how bbt operates has been completely asinine. The customer service is just terrible it's absurdly complicated and you always end up having to call in be on hold for at least 45 minutes and good luck getting ahold of anybody that knows anything. The worst part of bbt is the overdraft fee. I thought that the check I had deposited would have gone through. So I bought gas and end up over drafting about about 20 dollars, which is bad enough, but what really hurt was the 72 dollar fee. Overall bbt offers nothing that other banks don't and they have really high fee.

I thought I had sent my mortgage payment and even called BB&T to see if it had arrived. In reviewing, I discovered that I had not mailed in the payment, but had subtracted it in my checkbook when I was writing other checks. I sent in a double payment, but they still reported me to the credit bureau. 1st time in many years of having credit that I was late for ANY CREDIT . I tried to explain the oversight to BB&T to no avail. They claim there is nothing they can do. By law, lender is required to report info to the credit bureaus. They are the absolute pits. My credit report is spotless except for this BB&T report. They do not want to help. Someone must get a lot of brownie points for making a report to the bureaus!! Can I give a rating of less than one star?? If so, that's what it is. Since I initially wrote this, BB&T changed their position to a more favorable response!

Bank has horrible policies. Definitely not looking out for their customers. I went to deposit cash into my elderly sisters account as she was out of town and running low in money and guess what they would not let me as I was not on the account even though I had her account number and explained the situation. So now I have a sister stranded in New Jersey with no money. The banks solution was to put the money in my account at BB&t and then write a check out of my account and put it into hers. How stupid. Would not put the cash in her account but more than willing to do extra work and put it in mine. This kind of service has me looking at changing banks as BB&T does not care about its customers. Shame on you BB&T!!!! What a Circus!!!!

My father had a joint account at BB&T with my mentally retarded brother. My Dad passed away. I obtained legal guardianship of my brother and became his representative payee, and am executor of my dad's estate. I went to BB&T and gave them the death certificate, guardianship paper, trust papers, etc. They took my dad's name off the account, but refused to put mine on. So I had my brother "sign" a check to pay his group home. BB&T refused to accept it, saying my dad had to sign it. Kind of a hard thing for him to do, being that he is not alive. It has been a month since I gave them the death certificate. My lawyer says they cannot refuse my brother his money! Tried calling BB&T - they said reps were available at that time (I called after 5 pm ET). NO option to get a rep. I called 4 times and starting pushing any number. Robo lady finally said they would transfer me, but 18 minute wait! So I gave up. Luckily his group home is understanding, and he will get whatever care he needs. But now I have to go back to the bank again to see if I can close the account out, which I am sure they will not let me do. I guess all I can do is pray for my dad's ghost to show up at the bank! I guess I need to call the lawyer again! Those in the bank were very nice and tried to help, but it is all on the corporate level.

This is literally the worst bank I have ever banked with. I have lived in four different states all over the country and have only had a problem with this bank. I recently moved away and do not have a BB&T near me, so I chose to switch to PNC (highly recommend). When I first moved to my new state I lost my debt card and needed a new one. Unfortunately, they could not do an address change over the phone so they had to mail me an address change request form to fill out and send back. I did exactly what they told me to do and never received a new debt card. I then needed a new credit card and never received one. It got to the point where I wanted to close my account. In order to do so you have to go into a BB&T location and do it there or physically write yourself a check or wire transfer all of your money to your new account. I did exactly what they told me to again and they charged me a return item fee and denied my transfer. When I called he argued with me saying PNC was charging my BB&T account (yes the transfer was trying to go through) he said I was wrong and continued to go around in circles with me not helping me solve my situation. So, I STILL have a BB&T account and will most likely CONTINUE to be charged return item fees when all I want is to leave this bank.

I have had an home equity line of credit with BB&T for nearly 20 years and have always made my payments. Out of the blue I receive a letter stating" This is to advise you that we have suspended you ability to obtain advances on your line of credit. We have taken this action because we reasonably believe you will not be able to meet your account repayment requirements due to the following material change in your financial situation: Delinquent credit obligations with others." This stems from me co-signing a student loan for my daughter about 7 years ago and yes, she had been late on several of her payments, but she was still paying. The letter went on to ask that I could write and ask to be reinstated. After about four weeks of settling down I decided to write. Basically I asked why they were using such a bases for their action and was my relation with the bank for the past 20 years not considered. I sent the letter to the address stated in the letter to me, only to have it returned to me four weeks later with a sticker from the post office saying "No mail receptacle unable to forward". What a joke this is. So I took the returned letter to the bank and dropped it off with the drive through teller. Now, over two more weeks have passed and not a word from the bank. When I can to this Best Company site I was not surprised to see such a low rating for BB&T. I would not recommend this bank to anyone. Who ever is writing their algorithms to determine credit needs to be fired. They use to be a local back with a personal touch, but seems now a computer program makes all the decisions.

We have been customers with BBT for over 10 years. Yesterday we parked in BBT parking lot the "BRADENTON DOWNTOWN" branch, used the ATM machine to get cash out, walked across the street to pay a fine and they TOWED our car. If this is how they treat customers DO NOT EVER GO TO THIS BANK OR THEY WILL TOW YOUR CAR IF YOU STEP OUT OF THE PARKING LOT. BRUCE watches through a window for this and can't wait to get someone. He then tells it only costs $100 but it costs $180 to get your car back. He was very happy doing this and feel it was because my husband is SPANISH. There were TONS of vacant parking spaces. BRUCE DELIBERATELY TARGETED MY SPANISH HUSBAND. DO NOT GO THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! unless you want to lose $180 and have a prejudice white person get you. I will be closing our account there. I gave Bruce an opportunity to correct the situation by paying the tow bill but Bruce refused to pay the tow bill and actually told me "I HAD EVERY RIGHT TO DO THIS". Bruce wouldn't even apologize. My husband had to jog 3 miles to get the car because it was so close to closing or we would have been without a car for the night as well. What a jerk and the WORST customer service in history.

I am trying to monitor my aging parents accounts. I am POA and so is another family member. I went to the bank to put myself on as POA but not access myself to any transaction. I didn't get very far since the "agent" told me I could not do such things with the copy of the POA . I need the original. Okay , not a problem, The other family member that is POA (we do not get along) has the original and BB&T has that copy of the original. so, long story short, the agent shut down the conversation and would not let me ask questions. I don't understand why they need me to provide the original POA when BB&T has a copy of the original and my name is all over it. AND......another thing. I did go to the bank with aging father. He said he wanted to take money out. The teller knows him and did not even question him who I am...ask for any ID and proceeded to give my father a large amount of cash. I could have been anybody!

Opened an account with no overdraft protection or overdraft review yet in the last month I’ve been charged over $1100 in overdraft fees even though I’ve deposited $3800 & have had only $3200 in debits or transactions- how can this be you ask? I can’t answer that because Idk either and BBT is reviewing the issue and I was told they’ll let me know in 15 days. It shouldn’t take that long to review a months worth of transactions- I am not a banker and I did it with a calculator in less than 5 mins. I’m going to add to this that I’m not one, but 6 different occasions I’ve opted out of all overdraft coverage and either customer service is trained to ignore it or they are just horribly trained and don’t do it. A bank that is going to steal their employees 401K and lose the lawsuit last year obviously isn’t above stealing from their customer either.

I signed up bc they are giving a promotion for new customers. Little did I know they would just be paying me back for the money in the fees I have to pay. Firstly, I can never access my account from the the customer service line and it just hangs up on me. I have never had so much trouble getting a live person on the phone with a bank. I have to manipulate the the system to get a banker and they don't know why I am having so much trouble. They charged me 4 $36 fees for $1 transactions and told me they don't care if it's a penny, they will charge me a fee. They told me I could only get 1 fee back per year which is absolutely ridiculous. Everyone that answers the phone is country and ratchet and have terrible customer service, no empathy, no good vocabulary, even the supervisor was rude. Then I called my personal banker and he was clueless too. On top of that they ask if I want to have my overdrafts paid but despite my selection won't pay for overdrafts but still charge a return fee. This bank sucks.

I will not ever refer anyone to your company BB&t bank nor will I ever bank there. My parents deposited some money in their account, and the teller #1 didn't have them to fill out a deposit slip and # 2 she manually filled out the slip out for them . After like a week my mom notice and when she called the back to notify them, Amanda the manager was very nasty to them. She asked them questions that were very discriminating and pretty much said that my dad stop somewhere else and I guess dropped or did something to the money so when he got the bank it wasn't correct when he originally deposited it. It was forwarded up to the Corp level and they did another investigation due to the original investigation with Amanda she stated there was no inconsistencies in the video but my parents were never offered or allowed to view the cameras. So I was in touch with Debra and she pretty much told me the same thing...which was nothing she could do.(She quoted that she was very sorry) I just feel that as a big high end company where is the customer service. My parents basically just got the door slammed in their faces. My parents were very upset because that money was given to them as a gift to use it toward a bill. This has been the worse experience for my parents and I can't understand why nothing was done except for "I'm sorry" For those of you that have to take money to the bank whether it's a big amount or small amount PLEASE not only count your money but take a pictures of how many bills and the sequence of how you deposit them. Because as they say ITS YOUR WORD AGAINST THE BANK...Sad!!!!

I had a bank account at BBT in St Cloud Florida. Beware there is an issue in their bill pay system! They will dispense your money without your consent to your scheduled bills and pretend you did it! Then their next ploy is to hit you overdraft fees before they actually pay the bill even if your account can totally cover the bill at the time they actually pay the bill! Beware of their scheme! Go to a more reputable larger bank that operates above the board!! Their local managers are neutered and have no ability to do anything!!! They overall probably get a kickback and wait for the fees to be in affect and then cashes in! Beware of BB&T practices!!!

Been a bb&t customer since 2014. They are awful. Firstly, there are basically NO Brick & mortar locations, very annoying. Second, their ancient banking system doesn’t work worth a crap with Apple Pay or any other app requiring you to link, without calling in and waiting forever on hold to get it all linked. Third, deposits seem to lag (everything lags but even more so), whole withdrawals are instant. Meaning overdrafts and incorrect balances happen ALL THE TIME because they can’t get it right. Lastly, my card gets disabled every time I go to a shell gas station. They are never helpful. BB&t is a joke, not worthy of anyone’s money.

I have has previous business bank accounts at other well known banks but decided to give bb&t a chance since they are just a few doors down from my office. While they have many of the same positives and negitives as some of the larger chains, I caution anyone looking to open a business account to go elsewhere. This is long, but worth the read. Allow me to explain: 1. Online banking bait & switch Most of the other banks I've crossed will show your pending transactions in your online account, they will also show your balance +/- the pending items. (For example, if your balance is $100, and you have a -$25 transaction most banks will show an available balance of $75. Not BB&T. They do not calculate your pending transactions. This can be problematic if, like me you often have multiple transactions +/- moving through your account. The reason I call this a bait and switch is because more than once a month, they will clear the -$ transaction before 6am and hold my credit, charging me overage fees only to have my deposit clear after 8am. How this can be legal, I have no idea. To date I have been charged nearly $650 in fees for this alone. 2. Their customer service is terrible On multiple occasions, like the problem listed above; they explain that they have the right to refund up to 2 overdraft fees a year (common at most banks as a courtesy) yet, they won't do it. Literally, they flat out said they just won't. 3. Pesky check verification Each pay period I issue an average of 40 checks from my account. (Each with the proper signature on trusted checks with verification and watermarking) The first week I issued payroll, I received at least 15 verification phone calls. It wasnt enough that they needed to know that I wrote the check they wanted me to verify the total and the check number. Imagine being at the grocery store on a Saturday morning with a bank teller explaining that they won't issue the employee their earned wages unless you can provide that information. Insanity. When I called the mananger and explain how ridiculous this was, he offered an additional service "at a low, low cost!" That would keep the employees information in their system to avoid this issue. I politely explained there was no way I would pay them extra to cash checks I had in fact written. He later came up with a work around, now my hr person has to email a list of each employee, check number and total to the manager each week and my employees are only allowed to cash them directly at the local branch. Inconvenient, annoying and ridiculous. 4. Random check holds Understandably, when I first opened my account with bb&t they held any check I received for 2 weeks. Now Ive been banking with them for nearly 3 months and they decide at random how long and what amount they will hold. Literally. Last week I deposited nearly $4,000 in checks that cleared immediately. Today, I deposited $2,500 and was told "$100 is available now, $100 will be available tomorrow and the rest will be available next week." When I inquired about the hold the teller condescendingly replied "well, the system wants to hold it for 7 days but as a courtesy I over rode it to only hold for 2. Your welcome." Literally, that was the explanation. 5. Local tellers are rude. I don't think its fair to rate the tellers nationally since I can only speak for the tellers at my local branches but overall they have some of the worst customer service attitudes. For lack of a better descriptive term they are hood. They roll their eyes, the one I interacted with today sucked her teeth at me and they are dismissive. They play on their phones while you wait and don't explain anything throughly. Unfortunately this seems to be the case at the 4 different branches in Maryland that I've walked into. Overall, I'd leave this bank immediately except that I just transferred to this bank and have nearly $1,000 worth of checks that I just ordered. As soon as my stock gets low, I'm absolutely getting out of their clutches. Honestly, each bank has their draw backs but I have never worked with a bank this terrible ever. Run, take your money anywhere else.

I was lied to just so i would open an accout. I was yold when i opened this accout that i wouldn't be charged the monthly maintenance fee if i deposted 500.00 a month in the accout. I set up direct deposit to the amount to keep from getting the fee. Every month i have been charged this fee when i called to questioned it with customer service i was told they where unavoidable. Then i had the funds in my accout to cover 2 small transactions but i was charged the OD fees. Because they said that i did not have the funds. There was 6+ in the accout i made a charge for 1.97 and one for 2.30. Today i get a survey in my email i complete the survey and because i do not give them good feedback it was rejected because they said i do not classify this bank as my primary and they only want feedback from those people. So my feedback did not matter. So i wasted my time to complete this survey.

I would like to preface this review with the fact that I have been a BBT customer for 8+ years, I opened my very first checking and savings account with this bank, and opened my very first credit card and line of credit with BB&T as well. I'm very disappointed with the way this bank uses maintenance fees to essentially take your money if you do not deposit enough money every month and your balance falls below a certain threshold. It treats its customers who live pay-check to pay-check as lower-class citizens and basically penalizes you for having a bank account and trying to make ends meet. They don't really care about you as a person and they essentially treat you as a number. I have had my identity stolen over 3+ times with this company and am just overall dissatisfied. Often times I will have to wait 10+ minutes to get a customer service rep on the phone and when I do they always refer to "Well, you knew this when you signed up for the account." It really just seems like poor customer service. You might as well be taking to a robot or a scripted salesperson. I will be closing out my savings account today and only be using a checking account to pay my bills from here on out and eventually switch banks to another bank that won't penalize me for being poor when I can find the time.

*****************************************************************This company is a fraud and deserves 0 STARS !!!! DO NOT sign up with this bank PLEASE. They steal your money. If you don't have enough funds and an automatic payment tries to come out they will still charge you $36 without the automatic payment going through. This company is the worst. I WOULD NOT recommend this company. My banker did not tell me about this until I called customer service. I've been with this company for over a year. PLEASE SEEK ANOTHER BANKING COMPANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! **********************************************************************************************************************

You can look at the percentages and statistics on the reviews from this Bank compared to Wells Fargo and see Wells Fargo scores way above. I got into a bad situation and had to leave everything I own and go to a domestic violence shelter to avoid Danger. A friend of mine and an advocate helped me to put me and my daughter in a shelter and find a safe haven until we can get our lives back together. Unfortunately when I took a check in there they didn't want to hear any of my problems they were insistent that I pay an $8 check cashing fee. No I do not have an account with this bank but the person that wrote the check sure does and has for several years so in order for me to get $80 which I was using to get my water cut on I only got $72 out of an $80 check. I shared this with my friends and they are now going next week to look into going to Wells Fargo who was never charged me a check cashing fee. I completely understand there's rules and policies to follow but I also know that this bank has waived check fees for others. My Advocate was so disgusted by their customer service and the way that I was Trading that she is now contacting her sister who had a check cashed there a few weeks ago and does not have an account with them she is going to find that price from the check writers account and we are going to go to the BBB in the meantime IRG anyone to go to any bank but this one. When I told the teller I was staying down the road at the women's shelter is there any way she could help me she didn't say I'm sorry to hear that or anything like that she simply said no and took the money. Rude crude socially unacceptable they're going to lose a good customer and apparently by the ratings they've lost many already

I opened up a checking account in Jan 2018. I am newly single from being married 35 years and am learning how to budget. Anyways, long story short, BB&T does not show transactions until it's too late, charge 12.50 for transfer from saving to checking if overdrawn, and poor customer service. Yes, I know I can do better but it seems they have left me by myself at the helm to keep clear of rocks by not answering simple questions. From what I'm seeing on my online statement, they are applying all the bigger transactions before allowing the smaller ones go through, then applying any deposits (in that order), thereby creating a loophole in hopes the account gets overdrawn. Bam!! They are benefiting themselves by charging me overdraft fees. If they would let things go as they happen, this wouldn't be an issue. Changing banks!! Stay away from this one!!!

Someone used my debit card info to make an unauthorized purchase. I spoke to Delia (sp?) told me there was no need to open a claim bc the charge would fall off because we caught it so fast. 3 days later it posted & I have multiple overdraft fees. When I called BB&T back they asked why I did not file a claim, at that point I was livid. Since then I opened a claim with the merchant who accepted the transaction and filed a police report. BB&T basically said they could not confirm that I would get the funds back and even if I did it would not be anytime soon. This will be the second time this year I have overdrafts that are BB&T’s fault. I am closing my account and going to PNC, because they have customer service skills.

I have been banking there for 10 years a business checking account and have never had a check that I deposited bounce but If I am overdrawn they put ridiculous holds on the checks (I2-16 days) and I work for banks so the checks are actually directly from other banks. Once that's done they send back all my payments charging me 36.00 for each and by the time the checks clear- I'm overdrawn again. I am running from them. I don't mind the overdrafts I mind that they will attempt them over and over again knowing the money isn't there. I read a review that a sadistic CEO must have taken over DITTO (They actually put a hold on a check after we were evacuated for a hurricane which severely damaged my home, I wasn't her to deposit so account was overdrawn. Seriously??????JUST WRONG

I've been banking with BB&T since 2006 (the only bank I've ever used) and I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU LEAVE IF YOU HAVE AN ACCOUNT WITH THEM. They were awesome at first, not one complaint until 2017. A sociopathic CEO must have taken over because they have become extremely predatory. First of all, transactions do not show up on your account until several days afterwards. In the meantime, they don't reflect on your available balance, so it causes confusion. I admit I could take more care in balancing my "check book," but this was NEVER an issue with BB&T before. I used to pay a bill, refresh my online banking page, and immediately see the charge there. The big issue is overdraft fees. Their Overdraft Protection is an absolute joke. First, if your checking account doesn't cover a transaction, they use your savings account to make up the difference. Sounds like a great idea. Very caring of BB&T...NOPE. What they literally never tell you anywhere on their site, is that they charge you $12.50 TO USE YOUR OWN MONEY every time that happens. Second, even though I have it set to decline all transactions if I don't have the money, the fees still keep coming! So all told, every overdraft costs $48.50. Outrageous. I had a really hard financial year last year, and being hit with over $1000 in fees makes it nearly impossible to recover. I'm leaving and won't look back. Do not consider using them. Because they WILL use you.

We use BB&T bank for our mortgage accounts and have found that when we are speaking to a representative they are extremely helpful, but their website is a little hard to navigate and is definitely not user-friendly in comparison to others. They do provide lots of useful services though.

My loan payments have been being put into the wrong account for several months. Why I have two loan accounts with the same account number is anybody’s guess and each month when I call after receiving a late notice I have been told that the problem has been fixed. Even the people I talk to can’t explain the reason for two accounts. This just started when it changed to Truist. Sounds kind of shady to me. I plan to pay off this loan and never go back to this shoddy run corporation.

Very long lines on tellers lanes. Very slow service. Not many branches open on saturdays. They make you wait outside in the 90+ degree heat for 15-30minutes to get waited on then wait more time for them to process your transaction. Teller lanes are covered with mold and look like they were never cleaned. If you complain about it their response is they cant do anything about it. This bank has very poor customer service.

By far the worst bank I have ever used. Confirmed that my direct deposit information has been received, told it would deposit midnight that night, two days later still no sign of my direct deposit in my account. I can never get an associate through the phone to help. Overcharged numerous times for fees that shouldn’t have been placed from BB&T to begin with. As soon as I finally get my direct deposit I will be closing my account IMMEDIATELY. WORST BANK BY FAR

The overdraft policies they have in place are set to screw you over. Everything takes forever to post and if you overdraft, they will charge you over and over again until you bank is hundreds of dollars in the negative. When you call them, they won't do anything to help you! AVOID THIS BANK AT ALL COSTS IF YOU LIVE PAYCHECK TO PAYCHECK. Because they LOVE to take money from the people who struggle enough as it is! Thank you BBT, you ruined my vacation!!

This bank is TERRIBLE to deal with. Payments made online, on time are charged a late fee, and I am told it's a glitch in their system and they are working on it. When I spoke with customer services rep at my branch, she didn't even ask for account information. Just said it's a glitch in their system. They very clearly do not care about their customers. Bank with bbt at your own risk.

I recently opened an account with BB&T, set up direct deposit, transferred some fund to the account. After couple of days: I discovered that I was not able to login to the account, call customer service and they kept on kicking me around on the phone and they later told me that my account was close nobody can tell me why the account was closed, I went to the branch and they told me the same thing. I hope I will be getting my deposit back (hopefully).

IF I COULD GIVE THIS BANK 0 STARS I WOULD. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND STAY AWAY FROM THIS BANK, THE SERVICE IS HORRIBLE, WHEN YOU ESCALATE YOUR CALLS NO ONE CALLS BACK, AND THEY WILL CHARGE YOUR ACCOUNT LATE AND OVERDRAFT FEES LIKE THEY ARE ON STEROIDS. THE SERVICE IS HORRIBLE AND I WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED IF A CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT IS FILED AGAINST THIS COMPANY. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND READ THE REVIEWS, STAY AWAY FROM THIS BANK.

DO NOT BANK HERE! This bank steals from you! They will hit you with 8 overdraft fees for the same transaction even if you overdrafted by $5! One transaction for me turned into 5 overdraft fees! When I overdrafted by $1! Their system purposely hides transactions so theh can give you overdraft fees. Customer service is terrible and they don’t even help with anything.

Do not borrow from them for car loan. Daughter had stubs where there were attempts to pay , only 3 to go but repo'd anyway. Shipped the car 150 miles away in attempt to sell vehicle. She explained the issue (covid is no excuse) where attempts to pay the on loan but issues with site. Avoid this company, do not trust them.
