The Bad

  • No Quote Comparison Available
  • May Not Be Available in Mexico

No Quote Comparison Available

State Farm sells its own car insurance policies. If you want to compare quotes from multiple insurers online, you'll need to work with each one directly or use a comparison site. This lack of quote comparison can be inconvenient if you're in the first shopping phase.

However, State Farm is a trusted insurer, has excellent policies, and offers many types of discounts, so you're likely to find a cost-effective insurance policy.

May Not Be Available in Mexico

Some car insurers sell policies that work in Mexico. These policies are important if you plan to drive your car in Mexico. Since State Farm doesn't mention a policy like this on its site, you probably need to find another company if you plan to drive in Mexico.

gavel

The Bottom Line

State Farm is an excellent choice for car insurance. It has a strong reputation and offers many different kinds of coverage. With all of these options, you'll find the coverage you need for your car.

You may need to look for another company if you plan to drive in Mexico. However, rideshare drivers, businesses, and people with classic or antique cars benefit from State Farm car insurance that is geared to cover gaps and meet specific needs.

You'll also benefit from the many discounts that State Farm offers policyholders. These discounts will help you be a better driver and save money.

I’ve been a customer of State Farm for 31 years. In the beginning State Farm was the best company ever. They paid their claims on time and the process was a smooth one. However, today they outsource their claims department therefore you never know who you’re going to get to take your claim. Also many of the representatives do not have full access to State Farm database so they’re only able to help you up into a certain point. It begins to get completely frustrating when every time you call it’s a different person answers the phone. So you’re not assigned a person claims representative. Also their prices is constantly increasing which is getting outrageous. Otherwise I have State Farm auto and homeowners insurance.

I was with State Farm for over 20 years. I used them for EVERYTHING. Auto, home, renters, even to insure my wife's wedding ring. Never had to file a claim so I have no experience there. But out of the blue they started raising my rates on my car and home insurance. Out of loyalty I stayed with them but after the second year of my homeowners insurance doubling, I had to leave. I went to an independent insurance agent who wrote me with different companies and my monthly insurance bill went down 62%. I'll never be "loyal" to a company again. I wasted a lot of money before I left. Customer service was always top notch.

I'm guessing not all State Farm Agencies are the same, because I've seen multiple offices where I live, each one with a different agent. So referring to the agent I have worked with, their office is difficult to get a hold of and get a response from. I had an issue with driving for 6 months using "Drive Safe and Save" to calculate how much my discount will be, but after 7 or 8 months I looked on the app and my premium increased to $100 more than I was paying! I called them and they couldn't explain why it increased, but at the same time I was driving more miles and also driving for Lyft so I know those impacted my rate. But overall, they should be able to explain why it increased, and they couldn't

Had State Farm for about 8 years. Was happy until I filed a claim- but not how you’d think. We got into a car accident while moving to a new state. Totaled the car. They paid the claim fine without any problem- in fact we got more money than we were expecting from them, so that was a plus. However, they kept pressuring us to change to an agent in our state instead of keeping the old one because “a local person could offer me better service.” I did switch. Then I found out when you change to a new agent your insurance rate changes, so we immediately started paying for the car accident with a higher rate than before, instead of getting the rates hiked when the insurance came up for renewal in 6 months. I felt like I’d been tricked and changed to a new insurance company.

About 30 years ago I had a car wreck which wasn't my fault. Other people hadn't insurance, and state farm stepped in and settled withe lawsuit and took care my hospital bills and even granted money so I was able to buy a new car.

They overcharge those customers whom have been with them for years. They're not transparent with the discounts for customers who drive less than 5000 miles - they just say they have applied discount - but not what it was and how they arrived with the amount. Looking at changing my car insurance co.

All insurance companies are about the premiums being paid you pay for 25 years with a company and your late for unknown reasons they inform buy a little nasty gram with payment due as indicated or you will be canceled after all of this time and care from your agent.

After being with this company for approximately fifteen years, I discontinued their service. They did have the most reasonable auto and life insurance at that time. However, they increased my auto insurance without informing me, debited the increased amount from my account, thereby causing an overdraft in my account. I discontinued their service directly following this issue. Previous to this, I had filed an accident claim against another State Farm insured and State Farm pretty much called my claim bogus and me a liar. I had to fight to get my car repaired.

In many years of dealing with insurance companies, I have discovered they start you out with a "teaser" rate and constantly increase the premium, even with no claims. If you are on one of those auto pay deals, you might never notice the increases. That happened to me with AAA, and I never signed up for auto pay with anybody again. Then I went to Geico and the same thing happened. Now, with State Farm, it is happening again. New insurance company time!

Coverage is very good, but after being a customer for 30 years, they raised our rates and dropped my teenage daughter. She had no claims, but 1 year after accepting her for coverage they went back 15 years on us as parents and penalized her for us having windshield claims and a couple other comprehensive coverage claims that had nothing to do with her. The rates are good but that is because they only want paying clients without claims.

After many decades of loyal coverage with them, they raised my auto rate 18% for a $900+ repair on a car in a parking lot that I backed into. Prior to that I had never had a vehicular claim!

I liked my agent, but didn't like that the rates continued to go up. Also, the initial rates aren't very competitive compared to what is given. There's definitely no accident forgiveness!

I carry the device in my car that monitors my driving and usage. I ws told by my agent to expect a 50% reduction in my premiums at the 6-month renewal because I drive so little. Didn't happen. Rates keep going upwards.

I liked my agent, but prices frequently increased and, at one point, they stopped writing insurance in my state. To my knowledge, they don't have local claims offices. When big storms hit our area, we were dealing with many people who were not familiar with our state. I found that others were getting better service with a local company.
