Positive Reviews

Auto insurance customers mention claims satisfaction, State Farm's dependability, and good customer service.

Reviewers also trust their State Farm agent. Some positive reviews comment on the fairness of rates. Other positive reviews mention switching to another auto insurance company for a lower rate.

Because State Farm has earned high praise from customer reviews for its auto coverage, it has our recommendation.

Good Coverage Options

State Farm offers excellent coverage with its car insurance policies. You can include the following types of coverage in your insurance plan:

  • Collision coverage
  • Comprehensive coverage
  • Liability coverage (bodily injury and property damage)
  • Personal liability umbrella coverage (beyond bodily injury and property damage)
  • Car rental and travel expenses coverage
  • Rental car coverage (repays up to $500 of the deductible expense if you have an accident in a rental car)
  • Uninsured motor vehicle coverage
  • Underinsured motor vehicle coverage
  • Medical payments coverage (for covered person and covered person's passengers)
  • Emergency road service coverage

With so many coverage options, you'll be able to find a car insurance product that meets your needs.

Rideshare Insurance

If you drive for a company like Uber or Lyft, you can add rideshare driver insurance coverage to your personal auto policy.

This rideshare coverage add-on covers all the insurance gaps you have as a rideshare driver. This additional protection allows you to have the coverage you need whenever you drive.

Policies for Antique and Classic Cars

State Farm stands out from other insurers because it offers policies for antique and classic cars.

To qualify for this kind of auto insurance policy, your car must be at least 10 years old, be in good condition or in restoration, stored in an enclosed building, and have limited use.

You can purchase liability, medical payments or no fault, comprehensive, collision, uninsured motor vehicle, and underinsured motor vehicle coverage. You can also add emergency roadside service to your policy.

Commercial Auto Insurance

If driving is part of your business, you'll like the commercial auto insurance policies.

State Farm's business auto insurance policies can include bodily injury liability, property damage liability, personal injury or medical payments, collision, comprehensive, and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage.

If your employees drive their own cars for your business, you can benefit from State Farm's Employers Non-owned Car Liability (ENOL) coverage.

The Bad

  • No Quote Comparison Available
  • May Not Be Available in Mexico

No Quote Comparison Available

State Farm sells its own car insurance policies. If you want to compare quotes from multiple insurers online, you'll need to work with each one directly or use a comparison site. This lack of quote comparison can be inconvenient if you're in the first shopping phase.

However, State Farm is a trusted insurer, has excellent policies, and offers many types of discounts, so you're likely to find a cost-effective insurance policy.

May Not Be Available in Mexico

Some car insurers sell policies that work in Mexico. These policies are important if you plan to drive your car in Mexico. Since State Farm doesn't mention a policy like this on its site, you probably need to find another company if you plan to drive in Mexico.

gavel

The Bottom Line

State Farm is an excellent choice for car insurance. It has a strong reputation and offers many different kinds of coverage. With all of these options, you'll find the coverage you need for your car.

You may need to look for another company if you plan to drive in Mexico. However, rideshare drivers, businesses, and people with classic or antique cars benefit from State Farm car insurance that is geared to cover gaps and meet specific needs.

You'll also benefit from the many discounts that State Farm offers policyholders. These discounts will help you be a better driver and save money.

Auto Insurance has been good and they have been helpful when we needed it. But, I have been unimpressed with their ability to listen and keep our information straight. They have called and asked to clarify the same thing over and over and it seems to be different employees calling to double check each time. We also asked them to stop sending us our statement every month in the mail but they still do. Their service has been great but their communication and listening has been a 3/10.

I experienced state farm for the first time last year when they beat my existing company in pricing for my auto insurance but sadely they increase my insurance when it was time to renew with no fault of myown to by 38 dollars monthly. When asked why the change and if it could go down they said it was due to the climit of the country. Why should I eat the cost for issues across the country. I always thought they were high but now I know I was right. very disappointed.

I had this insurance in Alaska. It seemed to have the best rates in Alaska but quickly those rates constantly fluctuated, and I did not understand why when no claims were filed and I had no tickets. It was frustrating that every time I turned around my rate was increasing with no valid reason and I never received explanations. I ended up going back to Geico for a short time before landing with USAA.

Beware, they are the most expensive auto insurance company in the country. They WILL drop you as a customer after your first claim. Agents won't even consider letting you stay on as a customer if you have made a claim on your policy and they paid it out. You'll be dropped and forced to find another insurance company. Had State Farm for several years, my car was totaled when a drunk driver hit my car and injured me. Because I have full coverage loan payoff, SF had to pay my car loan off and then they dropped me as a customer even though the accident wasn't my fault.

The agents I've used from State Farm have always been well informed and are extremely friendly. That's pretty much where the good starts and the rip offs begin. Since they exist as most insurance companies do on an employee pay scale of commissions their agents do try to use pressure tactics to get you into plans that are unnecessary. They also do not do price comparisons like Progressive does. As a result I was paying roughly $1,500 EXTRA a year to State Farm for IDENTICAL coverage I later found through Progressive. Their price gouging for coverage that was the same elsewhere at almost 80% cheaper costs make them an untrustworthy company in my opinion.

I feel that their customer service has gone down over the years!! I was a VERY HAPPY AND LOYAL customer. I even changed Agents to see if that was the issue and I had been with my Agent for many years! But the grass was not greener with another agent. In fact it was brown! I tried a3rd and was so extremely disappointed I left and went with another insurance company. I used to feel like State Farm was was like a warm blanket and when I called I ALWAYS was able to speak with my Agent! I didn’t want to talk to a teenager or some other family member they had working for them!! The family members ended up costing us a lot of money . If the agent had got the paperwork on time and then got it to the correct people ( if the agent had the paperwork and had given our information to the wrong person they would have had time to fix the error! What was sad was only 1 Agent spoke to us about losing our business and it’s not your average Bear size policy! And we signed some paperwork&’we were gone ! The other Agents didn’t bother with us just like they did when we were their clients, I guess easy come, easy go! They really need to get back to being people Agents and not so above everyone and return their phone calls! . Check out what Allstate does for their customer’s they reserve 3-4 entire movie theaters and the day before a big movie is going to come out in theaters they allow 2 members or a member said a person who they choose to see the movie the day before everyone else! Plus they have little prizes (water bottles, keychains) (coolers, a bike, even weekend in St. George , T-shirts, ALL WITH THE ALLSTATE LOGO and the AGENT’s name phone number and address, FB , Twitter, website! And his business is growing so fast that he has had to move 3X hire more Agents (who are not family! And he answers his phone because it’s ALWAYS WITH HIM! And when he is finished with a client or having Lunt he returns your call! That is service!

Overall I had sub-par experience with State Farm, however there were some glaring issues that were very annoying. 1. My premium raised three times in about 15 months, for no apparent reason that could be explained to me as I had no violations or any change in driving habits. 2. For a claim, I was told that they would not cover my hood because of previous hail damage, however that information was not disclosed to me when I started my policy and met with my agent. 3. In regards to that claim, I was told I couldn't speak with my agent and that I had to work with somebody else, which made me question why I had an agent in the first place! Overall, the insurance was expensive and the price only continued to rise, and the most positives that I can give, is that they paid out my claim for damage quickly. I also realize that this might be an experience with a bad agent, but It's going to be a long time before I look back into State Farm.

They are just ok, have been a customer for over 20 years, would like to see them work with policy changes as times change to fit the needs that would apply in today's times. Customers that long should not have the same rates or higher after 20 years

Expensive and horrible claims service. They use a team approach to handling claims which means you never get the same person and have to repeat information all of the time. They made a lot of mistakes on my last claim with them and it was a constant struggle to get them to pay what they owed for the total loss of my vehicle., and I was their insured. It was unacceptable and I left and went with a different company. They are overpriced as well.

When my husband was rear ended we called our State Farm rep to have the car repaired. I was given a list of phone numbers to call and had to run to several different locations to have the car adjusted, then arrange for the repair. I was also responsible to arrange the rental car and pay the shop. Once they got the check I was reimbursed, but it was a HUGE hassle. For what I may every month for full coverage it was not very consumer friendly.

I was with State Farm since I was 18. Their rates kept increasing each year. It was insane the way that I never had claims or any tickets. Customer service was always good but I left after 22 years. Found cheaper rates else where.

I have been with State Farm for many years. I changed from a monthly plan to once every 6 months for three cars. I missed one of the payments on had to pay a fine with MVA. I was disappointed they wouldn't help, since they don't send a bill on this plan.

Only had them for a year because they dropped me because I had two accidents. I had a small fender bender and my tire came off of my car hit a truck. Accidents happen right?! well we only insure you up to two. I was never late on a payment.

The customer service was far from excellent. My car was totaled last year and State Farm did very little to help. I still owe thousands of dollars on a car I can't drive, for a wreck that was proven not my fault.
