The Good

  • Professional Affiliations

Geothermal in Addition to Solar

Southern Solar System has an impressive portfolio of completed work. Its portfolio features residential solar projects but the company also includes commercial and agricultural projects.

Southern Solar Systems is unique in offering the Tennessee Valley area with WaterFurnace brand geothermal products and services. Southern Solar provides full-service heating and air conditioning service. It services all brands of HVAC, specializing in geothermal systems. The company offers its customers options for new geothermal systems, helping save up to 70 percent on heating, cooling, and hot water.

A geothermal heat pump system is similar to solar in that it reduces the need for fossil fuels while utilizing renewable energy to reduce your utility bill. The heat pump takes hot air from your home and moves it into pipes underground, leaving cool air to be distributed through your vents as air conditioning. In cold weather, the underground pipes circulate water, which absorbs the heat from the earth and returns it to the indoor heat pump to be distributed through your home as warm air.

Professional Affiliations

Southern Solar System is a NABCEP-certified solar contractor. NABCEP certification is an indication of a company's professional standards in solar installation.

The company is also a member of the Alabama Solar Industry Association.

The Bad

  • Limited Solar Information
  • Limited Online Reputation

Limited Solar Information

When shopping out a solar company, we recommend consumers look at a company’s warranty offerings, equipment lineup, and additional guarantees or perks. Unfortunately, Southern Solar Systems shares none of this information on its corporate website, making it difficult for homeowners to compare this solar provider to others.

Limited Online Reputation

Reviews written by past clients of any service are critical for potential customers who want to do their research. When looking to invest in residential solar, reviews may be one of your most important tools in helping you decide who to go with. While Southern Solar System has experience as far as years in business and a portfolio, customer reviews are needed to make a judgment of its customer service and value.

The Bottom Line

Southern Solar Systems has a lot of experience in solar and has been around a long time for the industry. However, if you're a homeowner looking to use the company for a solar system, we would suggest doing more research done on its reputation and finding some first-hand experience from customers that have used Southern Solar Systems for a residential project.

They installed the solar panels, but not the backup battery. Each time I call about when they will install the battery I get some type of excuse. I started getting a bill for the installation two months ago, the contract showed the billing to start in September. When I called the Finance Company, I was told that Southern Solar had reported that the installation was complete. The salesperson will not return my emails unless I call the company direct. When I do talk to the Salesperson, he will tell me that I should get the backup battery in a few weeks. His manager will tell me that the latest parts needed are on back order, and it will be several months before they will be able to install. The next phone call is that they have a list of installations that are ahead of my installation and that it will be several months before they can install the battery backup. Then the other is that they will keep me updated each week as to the status of the battery backup. The only time I hear or get an update is when I call them. Most of the time when I call the number there is no answer. When I do talk to someone, then I will get an email from the salesperson telling me that I will be getting the backup battery next week. He has told me that I got a rebate of $4,000, from the company. That was two months ago. I have not seen any rebate. So far I have sat in the dark during back-outs. One was at noon when the power went out, no power until the power came back on. This would not have happened if I had a battery backup.

The loan payment plus the electric bill make it a total of more than twice of what I was paying for the electric bill before. I was told I didn't need any batteries...please don't be taken in like I was..I am 70 yrs old and was taken advantage of

I told sales person to do estimate and install on 120% usage. 1 year in it barely does 50%. So zero cost savings. Stay away from this company,
