The Good

  • No Subcontracting
  • Maintenance Included
  • System Monitoring
  • Awards and Certifications
  • ION Earth Program

No Subcontracting

ION Solar does not outsource any of its installations, meaning the company installs every solar panel and inverter itself. Working with a full-service provider like ION Solar generally bodes well for homeowners as the company will then have full control over who is in and around your home and your family.

If you ever come across a company that does use subcontractors for any part of the project, we would suggest you tread carefully. While the solar company itself might be licensed, the subcontractors might not be. Additionally, the more people who are involved in the project, the bigger chance there is for miscommunication and lack of quality.

Maintenance Included

ION Solar states that the system it provides you includes free maintenance and repairs for the entire life of the contract.

In reality, solar panels don't require much maintenance other than being sprayed down with water every few months to keep off the dust and dirt buildup that could limit sunlight exposure.

However, if something does happen, ION Solar will be there to take care of it for you.

System Monitoring

Another beneficial feature ION Solar offers is system monitoring. Unfortunately, the company doesn't specify exactly what that monitoring entails, whether it's for production, usage, or both. It's to your benefit to have both.

However, ION Solar states that it will monitor your system 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If there's ever a problem, the company will know about it and send a technician out immediately.

Awards and Certifications

ION Solar has been listed as one of America's 500 fastest-growing companies by Inc. Magazine. The company has also been certified by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP), a solar industry-recognized nonprofit organization charged with promoting best practices in solar power.

ION Earth Program

ION Solar is a featured partner of Habitat for Humanity. It's humanitarian program, ION Earth, provides a free solar panel system to a family in need for every 2 megawatts of clean, renewable energy ION Solar installs. It is impressive to see solar companies go beyond their everyday business practices to promote clean energy and other causes with their reach and efforts.

The Bad

  • Limited Availability
  • No Solar Energy Storage

Limited Availability

Unfortunately, ION Solar's availability is relatively limited; the company only offers its services in eight states:

  • Colorado
  • Nevada
  • New Mexico
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Oregon
  • Texas
  • Virginia

Customers who live outside of this service area won't be able to take advantage of the company's renewable energy services.

No Solar Energy Storage

Ion Solar does not provide solar battery storage as an available system upgrade to its residential solar arrays. Many leading solar companies offer their customers a solar energy storage system as a way to maximize the efficiency of their solar system.

gavel

The Bottom Line

ION Solar does not subcontract any of its work and offers system maintenance and monitoring, and provides several payment options (including a solar lease) to help customers reduce their dependence on fossil fuel. However, if you're looking for a solar provider that installs solar battery options alongside panels and inverters, you will need to consult another solar company.

We recommend reaching out to ION Solar directly if you live in a state where the company operates and are interested in making the switch to solar.

The panels aren't working yet, so I haven't seen any benefits. They need to do better about making sure things are scheduled and that things are going smoothly and the process is being completed correctly. It took like 3 days and then they didn't even they did not finish. They just put the panels on and then it took weeks and weeks for me to get someone out here to finish the electrical work. I have had to reach out to them multiple times about a bunch of issues.

The solar panels look nice. It took 8 months longer than you said it would take. You improperly installed electrical breakers, leading me to lose power to most my house. You couldn't pass city inspection for 6 months after you said they were installed. I was double charged for 4 months on the cost of my power. You still haven't paid me back for the 4 months of being double charged. You didn't send me the $500 rebate you promised for my power box not needing to be upgraded.

0/5 - Salesperson (Enrique G) 3/5 - Project coordinator (Thomas N) 5/5 - Installation team 2/5 - Overall communication ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TL;DR - Enrique G (sales) promised incentives but did not deliver on these incentives until I reached out to corporate to complain 60+ days after panel installation. Enrique also misled us on PGE billing after installation (details below). Project team was helpful. Installation team was courteous and respectful. Overall comms were pretty messy. Our interaction with Ion Solar started in Nov’2022 with a D2D sales rep knocking on our door to pique our interest in solar. From there, we scheduled an appointment with their salesperson Enrique G. Enrique showed up and presented us the “potential savings” of installing solar and how it will essentially pay for itself as it will offset our electric bill entirely. He also mentioned that we would be put on a 12-month billing cycle with PGE after installation. Neither of these points turned out to be true. I asked a good friend of mine if he would be interested in going in on solar together to see if we can get a better deal from Enrique. Enrique offered us each a $1,000 check and $300 Nike/HOKA gift cards to be sent upon installation if we signed up with him. We thought it was a good deal so we both signed up. Mind you, these incentives were verbal agreements; none of this was on paper. Fast forward to Jan’2023, panels are installed. My friend and I reached out to Enrique G for the promised incentives and were both met with a short “yup on it”. This went on for 30+ days. We would reach out to check on the progress of these incentives and Enrique would either send a “will these sent out ASAP” or straight up ghost us. Having been fed up, we reach out to Ion Solar corporate. Thomas N hears our story and sends an email out to Enrique and cc’ing us both on it. Enrique G responds to the email with a “yup on it”. To our surprise, we received the $1,000 via Zelle a week later. However, the $300 Nike/HOKA gift cards were still nowhere to be found. At this point, we’re 60+ days past installation and we were still missing the last half of our promised incentives. So I finally submitted my post-installation survey, giving them a score of 1/10. Enrique IMMEDIATELY responds by sending both my friend and I the promised $300 gift cards. Why did it have to take so long and so many different parties to get Enrique G to fulfill his promise to us? Furthermore, why did he have to lie to us about the 12-month billing cycle? This was a complete bait-and-switch. Had we known that he was going to treat us like this after signing, we would NEVER have signed with Ion Solar. And to be honest, both my friend and I are struggling with buyer’s remorse after this experience. We would NOT recommend Ion Solar.

Projections given on how much I would save off my utility bill were not correct and prior to us agreeing to the panels being installed. I questioned if we were going to have enough solar panels to generate the type of savings they were projecting. We probably need at least 10 more panels to get the type of savings that they projected. Now I am saving several hundred dollars a month off. But my electric bill did not drop down below $200 a month. Also, the sales person told us we would receive an $8000 incentive rebate that we would need to apply towards our loan and I have called Ion services directly and they just gave me a tax form which is not the same thing as an $8000 rebate and no one when I’ve contacted Ion has any idea what this is and that was one of the main reasons we signed up for Ion that we were getting $8k off our $30,000 investment. I’ve had one service issue with our solar panels since they were installed. One of the wire nuts were not screwed on correctly and I had eight panels that stopped working two months after installation and I didn’t realize I needed to monitor my solar panels consistently, which is my fault and it wasn’t until my electric bill went sky high that I even look at them or questioned it, and found that they have been in operable for over four months. It would’ve been nice if Ion was aware that my system was off-line if they would’ve notified me via email or written correspondence, and the process of getting someone out to come look at my panels was not fantastic. They sent an electrician out relatively quickly and he indicated somebody needed to go up on the roof and we needed a roof crew and that I would be contacted to schedule a roofing company to come look at it within two weeks well for weeks later, I was finally able to get someone out here to climb up on the roof and look at it and it took from 10 minutes to fix but that was yet another month where I had eight panels not working. So over the five months I have paid approximately $400 more a month and my electric bill every month since the eight panels have not worked.

Everything went well through the initial meeting with my rep Richard up to the install and go live date. I referred my daughter who now has IonSolar powered on since October. Since then I have made numerous calls and discussions about money I was told I would get for referring my daughter. I have spoken to several different representatives who assured me that I would receive my referral bonus, which I have not. I recently received notification via email that now I need to have a txt, email, or a picture of the referral, which I do not since it was a verbal agreement with myself and Richard. The response was that now they have to reach out to Richard for verification of this agreement. Now it’s been 5 months since my daughter went live with her panels and I suppose it will be 5 more months before I get this, if I even do. My daughter has been having trouble with her panels and is very frustrated with the follow up of IonSolar to rectify this. Their response is that the trees are in the way. First of all they marked and ensured the panels were in the most appropriate positions, second it is winter and There are no leaves on any of her trees. I am so sorry that I recommend this company to her. She has thousands of more money in her system than I do because of the size of her home. It’s sad that she’s so disappointed and I feel responsible for sending Richard to them. If I had to do it over I would not have had these installed nor recommend it to my daughter.

This is an updated review. My prior review was on the Install which ION handle very well. My issue is lack of technical skill set to be able to correct inspection issues. Boxes and panels were mounted on the house but not in the correct configuration. Panels had to be relocated which left holes and scrapes on the house siding that now require filling and painting. There has been a constant issue with the panels on the roof. Inspections have failed 3 times on them. At the time of this review the issue is still not resolved! No one seems to want to take ownership of the issues to get them resolved. I am totally frustrated with ION and the process in general. The final pain of it all is I am paying for the loan on panels I cannot use plus the monthly power bill.

I signed up to get solar 7 months ago and I currently have 90% of the system installed. They are scheduled to come out next month to replace panels that should have never been installed, and to get the county inspections out of the way. Apparently after that Xcel still needs to do a final inspection prior to turning it on. The Costumer service has been less than ideal with multiple calls out and waiting days/weeks for replies at times. When they do reply they seem helpful and nice but until the system is actually put online and functioning I’m going with, I’m pretty unsatisfied with the current situation and the service I’ve received.

We're about a year on from beginning to get the panels, so this is a follow-up from our initial review on BestCompany for ION. It took most of last year to get the panels installed. There were a lot of problems getting to the point of installation, and miscommunications between ION's local and corporate offices left us in the lurch and out an extra $5k. We are happy with the panels and they've definitely helped with the power bill even in these few months, but we never did get a satisfactory resolution to the problems we encountered. The panels and solar equipment has been great, but ION's part in the process has not been.

Well, I was really looking forward to having solar and doing the Green thing but if I had to do this again for some crazy reason at another location, Ion would not get my business. The sales side for me was great and I believe that was mostly because we wanted solar and just needed to get started with the process. From what i’ve read in the neighborhood posts, lots of my neighbors weren’t happy with the pushiness of the people coming to their homes trying to get them to the next part of the sales process but we were on board as soon as they said solar so they didnt have to be pushy with us. After that dealing with the sales rep was great and we couldn’t wait to be on solar energy. Once we signed the papers we were turned over to the install side and things couldn’t have been any worse! It was a disaster from pretty much the first time someone came to do the site survey on to the “FIRST” install of the panels. The calculations were off for how many panels could go in the agreed upon location, so the first crew lead led us to believe he could switch it on the fly and it would look good. Well he was incorrect. It was hideous and even some neighbors were commenting to us about it. It just didn’t flow at all. So that had to be redone and the second crew was a night and day improvement and got it straight. And even after that there were other small issues just from lack of attention to detail, and honestly not the right leadership on the install team. Finally it was time for county inspection and what do you know it did NOT pass because the screw used to secure the conduit to the siding was the incorrect kind and the inspector had a feeling it was gonna be because he had done another Ion inspection and failed it for the same thing. So even after the first time the issue for the correct screws wasn’t addressed. Another simple mistake that could have been avoided the second time around. Once finally turned on, of course i had a faulty inverter (which I understand parts that are mass produced can have a faulty one here or there but just my luck after all this) so they come out to replace that and said it would take a day or two tops for it to be working well that wasn’t the case either. So after 2 weeks of scheduling and rescheduling due to weather they finally came back out to replace the recently replaced inverter and I was told that the one that was just replaced just never had the old serial numbers removed and the new serial numbers entered to have the panel operating and reporting like it should. Once again another mistake made that could have been avoided. And for the several weeks that we were down a panel no one offered to compensate us for that either. All this said I’m glad its finally working like it should (KNOCK ON WOOD) but I wouldn’t recommend this company unless they make major overhauls in management and have some more positive reviews moving forward. Lots of people tried to oversee my account once I made it known that this wasn’t acceptable but it just didn’t seem like the main focus was to fix things asap. I don’t think with all that was going on and what had happened that I should have had to wait as long as I did for appointments. With all these mistakes, I should have been top priority until this is resolved and not taking on more jobs to potentially not complete them effectively. I wish the company luck and I think they should feel fortunate that we really wanted solar and were patient because not many families would have put up with the incompetence that we did.

We were told the payments for the solar system would replace our power bills. Instead, we are now paying both solar loan AND power bill with an $90/month average to the power company. When we contacted the Ion customer service we were asked to send our power bills, which we did, only to be told that “everything looked normal” and that it was the “overage”. The bottom line is that it is costing us more now than it did when we were using regular power. Getting these panels was a huge mistake , we were deceived, and I will never recommend this company to anyone. Moreover the install itself took longer than promised and we started paying the loan before it was functional.

I am paying more in electric bill now, with paying for solar panels, and my electric bill to DOMINION POWER HAS NOT CHANGED. I CALLED!! I CALLED, I e-mailed and no one returned my call, even though the operator said some one will. I have read that customer service is a no go after they get YOUR MONEY. will I am still CONNECTED TO THAT MONEY. They used SILFAD Panel are they any GOOD ? give me a call so we can get back on a good FOOT. " Not seeing the power I payed for".

We are happy to have solar, but we didn't have a great experience. The sales guy left out a few crucial details about the loan and how solar works: 1) how the loan payment nearly doubles at 17 months unless you apply a tax credit, and even then, it's still higher 2) how we still pay the power company to stay connected to their grid 3) how we have to add solar to our homeowners insurance, which increased our payment slightly. So we kept finding them out later and feeling deceived and like all these extra things made it not the dream deal it sounded like - not a good thing for financial planning! I also didn't like how our sales guy had us create an "account" before we were sure we were going with it, which actually meant signing a contract, so we ended up feeling trapped in something we weren't even sure we wanted. We had 3 days to cancel, and then there was supposed to be a fee for cancelling after. The sales guy said we would NOT have to pay that, but I didn't trust him by then, especially when my name was signed on the contract saying we would have a fee. Then there was some "issue" that was never explained to us, so it took 2 months after the city inspection to even get our panels turned on. Again not great when we are paying both for our solar loan and our power bill. I would suggest shopping around when getting solar, not just getting roped into it by a sales pitch.

Very disappointed in their service. Communication is great until after finial sales which seems to be both within company and with me a customer. At first and second scheduled installs which were postponed due to snow levels on roof the pre-install person showed up not knowing the install was rescheduled. Then after the install took place while I was waiting to be notified install was complete they just disappeared. The finial inspection had to be postponed again because of snow and at rescheduled time of between 10 am and 4:30 pm, I called in that morning to see if an approximate time of arrival was known and was informed they would check and call me back. That did not happen and NO ONE showed up. I called in again same day about 15 to 20 min. before 4:30 and asked why no one had shown up and the answering party was to follow up an be sure I got an answer. Did not happen. I called my Ion Solar rep. the following day and got I am sorry lip service and was to call me back by 8 pm. Again DID NOT happen so now I am perusing my possibilities of forcing a removal of this stuff of my roof and restoring the roof to original condition.. I just do not trust this company. How can I now not suspect that this represents their service for the future.

I am in Albuquerque. The cost wasn't the cheapest but the Company was willing to work with me to run the conduit in the wall for a seamless look. Their electrician did a really awesome job. However, while the installation was great, the sales was terrible. My recommendation is not to use this company unless you've become an expert in what a kwh is and exactly how many you need. I was naive and thought I could rely on "professionals" to correctly calculate what I needed. Well a year later I am at 70% coverage when I was told I'd be at 120%. Going through my paper work, they didn't estimate how we discussed and left the vital summer months out of the calculation. When I called to inquire, I just received people willing to sell me more rather than tell me what happened. I had to figure it out on my own and have never heard back from them regarding a solution. Every time I get a bill where I have to pay, I just think how horrible this experience has been and how I wished I did my due diligence upfront rather than relying on someone else to do the right thing. Don't make my mistake!

Too many contacts during the install process, wish there was just one person handling the correspondence. Zero information after the install, no idea if my system is producing power, how much I'm using, how much I'm banking, etc. Just left in the dark as soon as the install was done. Have tried to get info and was told I probably need another gadget that wasn't sold with my system to actually know how much power I'm using, and ion doesn't sell that part. Stupid.
