Verizon has been a major player in the tech space (particularly mobile phone services) for the better part of the last decade and is headquartered in New York City. Recently, it has expanded into other technology areas with FiOS (fiber-optic) service and the purchasing of AOL as a means for generating content and other forms of media.

Verizon FiOS is a relatively new service that began in 2005 and has greatly expanded with increases in internet speeds. In areas where FiOS is available, customers can enjoy download speeds ranging from 100 Mbps to 940 Mbps.

In summary, FiOS from Verizon specializes in high quality/fast internet as well as a basic TV subscription. The availability of the service is somewhat limited compared to other television providers. However, if Verizon FiOS is an available option in your area, it is definitely worth looking into because of its fast speeds and competitive pricing.

The Good

  • TV Packages
  • Fiber Optic
  • Competitive Pricing and User-Friendly Features
  • Valuable Mobile App
  • Multi-Room DVR Service

TV Packages

Verizon FiOS offers two types of TV packages: a customTV package and a traditional TV package. Custom FiOS plans offer a variety of channel options, which means that customers only pay for the channels they want to watch. Verizon FiOS offers the following traditional FiOS plans:

Preferred HD

  • $74.99 per month for 1 year + taxes, equipment charges, and other fees
  • 280+ channels (105+ HD)
  • Includes channels such as Comedy Central, Fox News, MTV, TNT, ESPN, and SyFy

Extreme HD

  • $79.99 per month for 1 year + taxes, equipment charges, and other fees
  • 350+ channels (130+ HD)
  • Includes channels such as NFL Network, BBC America, FX, ESPN, OWN, DIY

Ultimate HD

  • $89.99 per month for 1 year + taxes, equipment charges, and other fees
  • 425+ channels (160+ HD)
  • Includes channels such as NFL Network, FLIX, Showtime, ESPN, The Movie Channel, Epix

Prices for a greater range of bundled options that include FiOS Gigabit Connection and a home phone can be found on the company website.

Fiber Optic

What sets Verizon FiOS apart from traditional cable and satellite companies is the use of fiber optics. Fiber optic is considered a cutting edge technology that will improve the communication/entertainment industry. Fiber optic technology allows customers to be constantly connected to their TV (as well as internet and phone if applicable).

Verizon FiOS has increased both the speed and capacity that traditional cable has to offer. For those who are getting started, FiOS installation usually requires 4–6 hours. Technicians typically test the existing coaxial cable for quality and signal strength to determine if it is possible to use existing wiring.

Competitive Pricing and User-Friendly Features

Prices and features are competitive, and in some cases better than what other television providers are offering. At the bottom of this expert review, there are additional details and services regarding the packaging. Also be sure to check out the ever changing promotions to switch to Verizon FiOS TV.

Verizon FiOS TV has a few better features compared to other top cable or satellite TV providers. First, you are able to record 12 shows at once. This is a significantly larger increase when compared to four or five DVR recordings by DISH and DirecTV. Depending on the package, you are able to access over 500 channels. This maximum amount of channels is better than other top packages from other providers. However, basic packages from Verizon FiOS TV will fall short of this maximum amount significantly.

Other features for an FiOS TV One customer include 4K Ultra High Definition compatibility, a voice remote, and multi-room DVR access.

Multi-Room DVR Service

Any FiOS Customer can watch their DVR recordings from the FiOS TV app and manage settings and recordings from a smartphone or any connected computer. Verizon offers two FiOS DVR options:

  • FiOS Multi-Room DVR Enhanced Service — users can record up to six shows at once and watch on up to five TVs
  • FiOS Multi-Room DVR Premium Service — users can record up to 12 shows at once and watch on up to 10 TVs

Valuable Mobile App

Mobile viewing is a huge benefit of the Verizon FiOS service. You can watch live TV or stream On Demand movies from your tablet, laptop, smartphone, or streaming product. You no longer have to be sitting in front of the TV to enjoy your cable service and can watch all of your favorite shows and movies whenever you want, where you want.

Overall, users have been pleased with the functionality of this mobile app lately. Currently, the app enjoys a 3.8 out of 5 star rating from 26,343 reviews on Google Play. Verizon FiOS reviews suggest minor functionality issues did exist but have been corrected, such as navigation and sub-accounts inability to access live streaming TV.

Verizon Wireless customers can stream data-free through the FiOS TV app, meaning that data used on the app does not count towards a customer's data limit. Users can begin streaming from the app even before Verizon FiOS has been installed in the home.

The Bad

  • Only Available in Eight States
  • 2-Year Commitment for Triple Play Bundle

Only Available in Eight States

Availability is a huge issue with the Verizon FiOS service. As of right now, Verizon FiOS only offers services in eight states. It is currently working to get into all 28 states where Verizon provides landline phone services. While Verizon FiOS has competitive prices and features comparable to other cable providers, it simply does not service enough people nationwide due to the fiber optic limitations. Verizon FiOS TV is currently available in the following areas:

  • Delaware
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
  • Providence, Rhode Island
  • Virginia
  • Washington D.C.

Two-Year Commitment for Triple Play Bundle

While not uncommon among TV providers, it is unfortunate to have a two-year commitment requirement as part of your contract with Verizon FiOS TV bundles. If customers wish to cancel their contract before the time period is up, they will be assessed a fee(s) based on how long they have been a customer and their payment history. Also, the most basic TV package available does not come complete with many of the channels found in the packages of top competitors.

gavel

The Bottom Line

Verizon FiOS is a great option for cable TV, internet, and phone if it is available in your area. Service is limited based on where you live, so there is a chance Verizon FiOS TV is not offered in your area. Fiber optics help speed up service as well as increase capacity and quality to create a great alternative option to satellite and cable television providers.

I am completely frustrated with FIOS Cable TV Service. I do not have any FIOS routers, set-top boxes or DVRs in my house. I rent their cable card for my TiVO. Untill a month or so ago, my bill for cable, phone, and Internet was $165, recently it has gone to $182 with no change in service and NO notice of the increase. I reviewed the channels that I am getting. We do not watch well over 80% of them. I thought I could choose the ones I watch and save some money. No way! My only choice to lower my bill back into the $166 range was to get their lowest tier. In this I was asked to pick 5 channels (none premium) and that, based on that choice, I would get 125 channels of cable service. I could NOT learn what those channels would be until I started the service! I could change those five channels every billing cycle but again I could not learn which 125 channels would be provided until I activated and watched the service. Furthermore, I could not start the service until I went to NJ and picked up a set-top box from them and activated it. I have two weeks to do this task. I told them I did not want a box. They said it was free. I said I did not care, I did not want it. They said you have to install it in to get the new service. I could unplug it afterward and keep it and they would not charge me $10 a month for it. Alternatively, I could drive back to Jersey to give it back to them. They said I was going to get 300mbps Internet where I currently have 150; however, to get this speed I need to use their free router. I told them I have a highly capable commercial router and that their router would not work for my needs. They did not care. So I will have a "free" router and set-top box that I will not use. I have been stewing about this all afternoon and decided to vent here. Depending on what service we get, we may become a chord cutter relative to cable TV. Over $2000/year for Cable TV service just seems like too much to me.

The cost of FIOS TV is outrageous but the quality is not acceptable!!!! PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY AND GET XFINITY. I HAD XFINITY and I listened to my boyfriend and got FIOS. BIG mistake...now my channels just stopped working, not the first time. They just stop working and nothing you can do so if you're like me - night owl you are screwed cuz nobody is going to help u. I was on the phone for 2 hours and on the website and nothing happened.. then sometimes you watch TV and the system just shots off and stars to reboot itself for no apparent reason!!! When the weather is bad sometimes TV goes haywire!!!! You see static on the screen. Oh and the wifi quality- horrible....and my bill is $236 and I only have HBO that sucks anyway cuz they play the same thing but my standard cable isn't full. For that amount of money I should have at least all standard channels like Smithsonian and Destination America and Life....but I don't have those. I am going back to XFINITY cuz for what I have now I'm going to pay somewhere in the area of $130 - $140. Minus HBO that I don't need. So take my advice and please AVOID FIOS AT ALL Costs.

BUYER BEWARE My bill went from $160s to $193. I called first and asked why my bill is so high and can I get it lowered. I was offered a 1gig internet with my package to bring my bill to $174. 2 days later 1/2 my movie channels and 1/2 my local channels were gone. I called and Verizon said thats the package they said I agreed to. I agreed to a lower prices if I upgrade to the 1gig. Noone said i was losing my movies and local channels. So to add those channels would cost well over $225. So we cancelled the 1 gig package and told them to return everything back to the way it was. We were misleading by the Verizon rep. He changed our programming and 2 weeks later they say something in there system says they reverted us back to the ultimate package. There system says we have it but over 2 weeks without the channels they took away. Spectrums packages are cheaper for the same programing with internet speeds starting at 350 megs as opposed to Verizon 100 megs.

I called Verizon FIOS on July 6, 2019 and spoke with a female representative. She told me Verizon FIOS offered a 60 trial period called Verizon FIOS Test drive but she failed to explain to me that bill would more than double from $79.99 per month to over $180 per month after the 60 day trial period. She also lied to me and told me I would be provided with a free 45" TV on the day of installation. When the installers arrived on July 7, they laughed and told me that the sales representatives were trained to lie and say anything to get a customer to sign up for services. They told me that the installers never carry the tvs on the truck and I would not receive the "free" tv for 30-60 days, so I had to go out and obtain my own second tv. Verizon FIOS TV tried to take my monthly bill from $03 per month to $182. When I called customer service and explained I was a senior retiree on a fixed income, they clearly did not care, it was totally about trying to extract as much money from me as they could. Again, the sales representative also lied to me about receiving the "free" tv on the day of install. It was shipped to me about 35 days after the initial day of service, which was July 7, 2019. Verizon's advertising on TV and radio advertises a price of $79.99, which is a total lie and misrepresentation. My first bill was $13 per month after I paid $199 to buy a router from Verizon rather than renting one for !3 per month. Verizon takes pride in taking advantage of seniors like me who are on a fixed income. Today, I reluctantly paid $133 per month with absolutely no movie channels rather than agreeing to pay a $350 early termination fee. Verizon is a dishonest company that uses bait and switch tactics to take advantage of seniors. Beware of Verizon Fios.

I am now on hold once again during my 14TH PHONE CALL TO VERIZON since getting FIOS. (30 minutes and counting). My apartment is 900 sq ft and the "premium" service I paid for has yet to work in my daughter's room which is 22 feet from the router. In the past few months, I have now invested 6.5 hours into phone calls trying to get it corrected. Verizon reps continue to try to sell me an additional booster and refuse to send a tech to fix the issue. This happens on every single call no matter how many times I tell them NOT to sell me anything and simply fix the crappy product they sold me. When I loudly insisted on having someone come out, the Verizon rep told me they would CHARGE ME $95 FOR THE SERVICE CALL!!" Are they kidding? As if it can't get any worse, after insisting on elevating my issue to a Supervisor, the supervisor told me he would send a booster for free and keep my monthly rate the same. Shockingly, when the email confirmation came, the Verizon snake oil salesman flat out lied and actually canceled my old plan, sold me a new plan at the same rate, but the rate would go up in 3 months and then up yet again in 3 more months and up yet again in 3 more months. HE ACTUALLY COMMITTED FRAUD. This is astounding. WAIT. It gets better. When I called back and spoke to yet another supervisor and threatened to call the US District Attorney, she told me she would have a tech come out the next day on a SUNDAY to fix the issue. She promised it would be corrected and told me 3 times that she would call me in 5 days to follow up to ensure I was happy and would offer me some kind of customer accommodation for my trouble. Guess what? No rep showed up for the scheduled appointment. The supervisor did NOT call back in 5 days to see if I was happy and of course I did not receive any customer accommodation. AND OF COURSE, THE FIOS STILL DOES NOT WORK. 9 MONTHS AND COUNTING. #Verizon you should be ashamed of yourselves. Just when I thought Spectrum was the absolute worst, Verizon FIOS trumps their ineptitude. CONSIDER MY ACCOUNT CLOSED

Fios did the impossible: They somehow made their TV remote less responsive with more lags than TV remotes from 30 years ago. Literally every day, I will hit the guide, or DVD, or channel up or down button, wait for 10 seconds for it to respond, and then finally, it does what it was asked to do. Again, 30 years ago, never had this problem. Same goes for 20 years ago...10...5 -- you get the idea. It's very easy to see why so many people are cutting the cord today, and thanks to Fios, I'm inching closer to joining them by the day.

Awful TV quality and service!!! From the very first day it was installed the tv picture constantly freezes!! When you call customer service if sends you to 'robot' help which reboots the tv. it's a hit and miss, sometimes it helps and sometimes you have to call back for the automated service to reboot again! I've had this service 3 months and with the exception of a few days of uninterrupted viewing , the tv screen freezes! i'm done! Going back to my old carrier!!

Verizon has by far the worst customer service! When I first signed up I was promised a $100 gift card. They issued me a link 2 months later that did not work. I left a complaint and when I followed up multiple times today, I received a link once again that DID NOT WORK and after endless transferring back and forth, I learned that the gift card expiration was up and I would not receive the promised gift card. I spent 3hours and 30 minutes for absolutely nothing. Very frustrating. Terrible customer service and inefficient links. I do not recommend Verizon!

I was happy with the package and price I was offered, they were here and installed everything without a hitch, but what has me fuming mad is the fact that they RAISED and CUT some of the programming I had when I first signed up, I ended paying more for less than the prior company I had, so please do yourself a favor, don't BELIEVE these people because they don't give you what they claim, my last bill was close to 300.00, unbelievable!! When the service worked, it was fine. However, we experienced outages far too often, sometimes several times a week, which led to hours spent with customer service and billing (we were even charged for service appointments for the service outages!). After months of dealing with service outages that had become far too frequent, we finally asked to end our service and switched to another provider. This is when we ran into more customer service and billing issues. The agent said that we would have to pay a $190 fee for breaking our 2-year agreement, even though our service was obviously not working as promised and they had a record of our service outages, which added up to weeks of down internet service in all! We tried to escalate to a supervisor, but they still refused to release us from the agreement. Horrible product and and even worse customer service and support experience due to dishonesty and lack of integrity. This was our experience with Verizon Fios, but I will never use any Verizon-related product or service again. I have shared our story of these horrible experiences and dishonest practices multiple times and will continue to do so.

Firstly, it took 3 technicians to get it up and running. This was over a 4 day period. Secondly, there are NO INSTRUCTIONS or TUTORIALS on how it works. We switched from COX cable because of the constant price hikes. Now we have Fios TV and internet but can't figure out how to program the DVR. We are seriously considering other options.

Verizon has poor/no service! Cilmb the pole fix your own equipment!! We don't care if you have floating pixels/freezing/skipping screen. The same for every tv in the house. My 83 year old mother can't get service but they want the 156$ monthly and the product isn't acceptable.
