The Good

  • Nontraditional Schooling
  • Free Trial
  • Premium Perks

Nontraditional Schooling

Skillshare is proud to focus on reinventing learning as it strives to break away from the "degree" mold and provide students with an innovating and intriguing training program to learn new skills. The online classes are full of creative online discussions and self-paced learning. Skillshare's training courses range from design to business to technology, and for a competitive price, users have unlimited access to thousands of interactive online courses and communication platforms to share projects and ideas.

Each program offers short, on-demand video training from teachers who actually work in the subject field. The online classes are designed to help students complete their work on their own time, helping students progress at their own pace while still continuing to interact with other students and instructors throughout the duration of the class. Most instructional videos range from 45 minutes to an hour, which helps to hold the attention of the students and also provide significant time to complete assignments and projects while still maintaining a regular social schedule.

Free Trial

Skillshare also offers a free 2-month trial for new users that gives you unlimited access to Skillshare's course catalog of over 24,000 classes. If students like the material, they can then access classes anytime by paying $15 monthly or $99 for an annual premium membership. There is no contract so members can cancel their subscription at any time. In short, Skillshare is setting itself apart from the competition in three significant ways:

  • Charges a comparatively low monthly fee for unlimited access to the online learning platform
  • Provides offline learning for users on the go
  • Gives a 14-day free trial, also with unlimited access

Premium Perks

When signing up for a premium membership, members receive the following perks:

  • Unlimited access to over 24,000 classes
  • Ability to download classes within the app to watch later
  • No ads
  • Support Teachers
  • Scholarships
  • Get discounts on services and benefits*

*Annual premium membership only ($99/year)

The Bad

  • Traditional Education Seekers
  • Unclear Course Access

Traditional Education Seekers

For learners who are looking to have one-on-one contact with an instructor or teacher, who are wishing to be tested and quizzed on a regular basis, or who are hoping for a "typical classroom structure" Skillshare is not the appropriate option.

This company also doesn't offer any proof of completing a course to be used in the workforce. Teachers and courses aim to help others learn new skills in their respective fields with an online learning community, not provide certification.

Lastly, not all instructors are certified teaching professionals. Class videos can be taught by nearly anyone (this is not to discount the level of learning possible) and are not generated through Skillshare's internal company. This makes an traditional, instructor-led training even less likely.

Unclear Course Access

Skillshare offers those who are hesitant to sign up access to watch the beginning clip on thousands of their free classes. This gives potential members a feel for how the classes on Skillshare work. To unlock the rest of the course, Skillshare requires either a free or premium membership.

However, if members only have the free membership, venturing beyond the free classes page can be frustrating since most of the classes require the premium membership to access the entire course. There is also no way to see which classes are a part of the premium membership. So members won’t know if they have access to the entire class until they click on it.

The Bottom Line

For individuals searching for an online learning platform with affordable costs, endless class options, and independent, hands-on activities, Skillshare is a training provider that they should definitely look into. Customer reviews appreciate Skillshare's usability, the hundreds of free classes offered, and the quality of the short instructional videos. For many students, it seems to be the perfect training center. Furthermore, Skillshare offers packages for companies or teams hoping to include a large group of individuals in an instructional class.

However, potential members should consider and weigh the company's flaws to its strengths. The programs do not have direct instructor-led training, meaning students and instructors do not interact directly. Skillshare also does not offer any form of certification completion and they are not AICC or SCORM compliant, and many of the classes are locked unless you purchase the premium membership.

Nonetheless, Skillshare is a great online training site for those who are interested in a nontraditional way to gain experience in many different fields, expand their networking community, discover new opportunities and learn valuable soft and technical skills.

People complaing about the Company charging them, Need skillshare more than anybody or atleast really need to educated themselves. Skillshare doesn't charged the customers, Google does. You have to cancel the subscribtion in the pla store. Complaining about not being able to keep track. because of a busy schedule, just means that you are a management horror and I truely hope you don't have a high posisition in your Company. regardless, now my review. Skillshare is great and very cheap in comparison to alternatives. You may stick to Udemy or decide to take up official Courses costing a couple of thousands. Apart from increasing my know how on photography, SEOs, Animation and some Adobe Programms, I have also learned a couple of extra things and find interest in new Hobbies.

I recently signed up to Skillshare in order to test the waters and so far I have been please what I have experienced. There are many options of things to choose from when it comes to a new skill to learn. The instruction is delivered via easy to follow videos and in some cases extra downloadable content. I am enjoying my subscription to Skillshare.

I've taken a number of classes on Skillshare, primarily in art techniques (gouache, pastel) but also in entrepreneurship. I really like the offerings and the format. Most of the classes are brief and to the point. They're taught by people teaching from their own experience, and that's what's really great for my purposes. For example, I took a couple of classes on how to get into design-related businesses by people who have done just that themselves. They told their own stories and gave concrete, realistic advice. The pastel class was great, all I needed to get going.

The best thing about SkillShare is that it has wide variety of courses in every field. The courses are really good and explanation by the instructor is makes the hard course seem easy. It also has a good mobile application, which makes the learning more accessible. It also provides really nice feature of assessing ones knowledge for free once you complete your course.

I joined Skillshare to enhance my painting capabilities and have found the on-line courses very informative and helpful. I have been using various mediums like Gouache, watercolour and acrylic paints and the advice and techniques have given me very useful advice. The tutors are very knowledgeable and their course content is brilliant, the walk through at the beginning of each course on how to use colours from faint to dense colours , plus brush techniques are extremely useful.

Since I joined Skillshare a couple of months ago I have improved my photography and photo editing skills significantly. As a photographer and small business owner it is important to me to improve my skills at a cost effective option. Skillshare is that cost effective choice. Teachers like Cat C, Tabitha P and Kate A have been essential in my development as a photographer as well as my branding and marketing skills. I would 10/10 recommend Skillshare to anyone who is looking to improve any skill!

I really love skillshare and have learned so much from their great classes. I see a lot of people complaining about being billed, but it seems to me that Skillshare works pretty much the same way that every subscription in the world does (audible, netflix, whatever) where in exchange for a free trial you are responsible for canceling if you don't want to get charged. Seems pretty reasonable to me.

I've been a skillshare user for two years now and it's been really useful for me. I'm a freelance designer, and it allowed me to learn alot of specific skills i didn't learn in school in for a very fair price. each month there are new exciting things to learn. it is a subscription business, so you have to be aware of that if you start a trial, but i use several subscription services so this doesn't bother me.

I have been using Skillshare for over a year and I have found it an excellent resource for online art classes. A lot of my favorite designers and illustrators teach there, the variety of subjects is pretty staggering, and you always get feedback on your projects.

I received 2 free weeks of Skillshare through a promotion on a YouTube video, and I signed up for a paid subscription before it was up. The volume and variety of classes on Skillshare is amazing and constantly growing. I’m so glad to have a resource this huge, at such an affordable price.

I signed up for Skillshare in July, 2017 and have been a happy customer ever since. Their classes on graphic design and photography are significantly improved versus what is available on YouTube. I've actually been able to use the learning I had on Skillshare to succeed as a freelancer in graphic design!

Skillshare has been really great! I use it to learn about different things, mainly cooking techniques. I had never really cooked before I started living by myself, but skillshare allowed me to cook whole meals for myself. I would recommend skillshare to anyone looking for new ways to do daily-life tasks.
