Top Ranked Companies

The Good

Specialty Loans

Fifth Third Bank offers a number of loan types to fit a variety of circumstances. The most common traditional mortgage options include:

  • Fixed-rate mortgage
  • Adjustable rate mortgage (ARM)
  • FHA loan
  • Jumbo loan

Some specialty options that are not available with every mortgage lender, but are offered by Fifth Third Bank include:

  • VA loan
  • VA interest rate reduction refinance loan
  • Physician and dentist loan
  • Construction loan
  • Community loan
  • Home Possible® loan

The majority of these specialty loans help those with certain occupations (military, doctor, and dentist) or those who are considered lower income. If you find yourself in one of these categories you may be able to score a more affordable home loan with Fifth Third Bank compared to other companies that do not have the same customer focus.

Additional Bank Services

A great thing about Fifth Third Bank is the fact that it is a full service bank that offers a number of other services and loans. Some of the other services it offers include:

  • Auto loan
  • Personal loan
  • Home equity line of credit
  • Student loan
  • Checking account
  • Debit card
  • Credit card
  • Savings account and CD
  • Wealth management

Many people love the convenience of having their mortgage services and bank services accessible by the same organization.

Communication with Customers

In order to make the home loan process less confusing and easier to follow, Fifth Third Bank provides it borrowers with frequent updates about the status of their loan to ensure that the borrower is kept in the loop.

There are also hundreds of locations staffed with mortgage experts available to chat and answer any questions that you may have.

Mortgage Calculators

Fifth Third Bank has three helpful mortgage calculators:

  • Monthly payment calculator
  • Refinance calculator
  • Home affordability calculator

These calculators can be helpful in determining how much you can spend on a mortgage and afford to spend on monthly payments throughout the life of the home loan.

Mobile App

Fifth Third Bank offers a mobile app that is compatible with Apple and Android devices. On this app you'll be able to find a wide variety of financial resources and tools, in addition to managing your mortgage loan.

The Bad

Only Available in 10 States

Fifth Third Bank offers mortgage products in only 10 states:

  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • Tennessee
  • West Virginia
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan

No USDA Loan Option

Fifth Third bank offers a wide variety of mortgage loan products, but doesn't offer USDA loans.

If you are seeking to finance a rural home purchase, a USDA loan through the U.S. Department of Agriculture can be a good option, offering low-interest mortgages with zero down payments.

However, you will have to look into other mortgage lender options if you are interested in, or qualify for, this type of loan.

Limited Information on Website

Fifth Third Bank has not disclosed closing costs, interest rates, or credit score requirements on its corporate website, making it difficult for potential borrowers to know what to expect in these areas.

You can speak with one of the Fifth Third Bank representatives to get an accurate estimate of what a mortgage will look like for you.

The Bottom Line

Fifth Third Bank offers a variety of bank services, diversified loan types, frequent loan status updates, and a mobile app chalked full of resources for its borrowers. Those that are considered low income or work in one of the specified fields listed earlier will most likely find a Fifth Third Bank mortgage that will suit their needs for a fair price.

However, the company does not list many key details on its website that make it easy for potential borrowers to comparison shop. Talk to one of its representatives if you have a serious inquiry to get a better understanding of its mortgage requirements.

I drive by Fifth Third Bank every day and saw a sign that mentioned rates being at an all time low. I ended up giving them a call. They were quick to get me an estimate, but since I had previously refinanced they made it clear there was not really a benefit to me refinancing again unless I needed cash out. I appreciate their transparency, because a couple competitors tried to push me forward despite no benefit. Based on the experience I would reach out in the future if I needed help.

Fifth Third is an excellent banking/mortgage company to do business with. I not only have my mortgage through 5/3, I also have all of my accounts with the company. They have fair rates, they're honest; they work with you for as long as it takes with patience and understanding to the customers individual needs.

I have found Fifth Third to be responsive and attentive, even throughout the pandemic. I did have a few issues, but they were promptly and professionally resolved. Wait times on hold during calls was a bit unbearable at times, but that was just about every where during 2020.

This is a zero star review. My mortgage was sold to Fifth Third and they have made it a complete and utter nightmare to pay my mortgage. I have tried to set up an online account and it doesn't work. They force you to call in. When I call in, I get stuck in the phone loop from hell. I have called for 2 weeks now and cannot get an online account and cannot make a payment via phone. I called again today and they routed me to a voicemail. I am currently sitting on hold attempting to pay my mortgage for the umpteenth time and I am on hold on two different lines. One line has been on hold for 25 minutes and the other is at 10 minutes. DO NOT USE THIS BANK IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE!!! MISERABLE EXPERIENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The mortgage lender has been very good. They are timely with notifications. I do not have any recommendations for improvement. We have had no problems with them.

Do not do mortgage !!! Loan officer goes on maternity leave with no email telling us she was on leave nor did we even know she was pregnant! She didn't even say hey I'll be out contact this person ! Loan in underwriting for almost a month and they pull out for verification of previous employer which they have record of all direct deposit seeing as I bank with them ! We are beyond upset with them! Got pre approved over 7 weeks ago found a home in 2 days of course it's a sellers market! Provided all documents needed the had to ask us for maybe 3 items! We told them the previous employer would not verify due to the labor law being called on him for illegal time clocks. Provided w2 tax return and I bank with them so they could pull up every direct deposit made from them well loan goes into underwriting a week later we provide a paystub from previous employer as they asked ok no problem on tj next get home insurance as they told us we did well 4 weeks later at 5pm underwriter calls home insurer says we have closing date ! Insurer calls us for authorization to start policy we call underwriter he says everything looks good 1 hour later get an email .. worth can't approve unless we have verification of previous employer !! What 4 weeks later this place is a joke our loan is now with another mortgage company whom says that should of been addressed before we have 1200 $ into fifth third.. COMMUNICATION is awful

My experience was the exact same as the previous complaint. I sent everything over and then they said they couldn't verify my income. My pay stubs, w2s and tax returns weren't enough. They wanted an additional letter from my employer but wouldn't tell me what. 10 days after my first closing date was scheduled they denied my loan. I had to find a new lender and was charged an extra $5500 from the seller.

We financed a underground swimming pool with them. The process was easy. Interest was a little high but I’m sure it had to do with us having a little bit of credit. Good Company to work with.
