Shopify has offered vendors a great website to sell their goods for years, and has upped their game. For members of Shopify, sign up for a 14-day trial of one of three monthly packages and see if the mobile credit card reader and check-out options is right for your small business. Shopify is a relatively new online site that allows merchandisers to sell their products online and still receive credit card payments from customers in person. It opened its' virtual doors back in 2010, and currently has 500 workers 'behind the curtains' of the net.

Free Trial

Start your free 14-day trial through Spotify, and try it before you buy it. In addition to online checkout, you can allow purchases to be paid for on the go...at trade shows, flea markets, road side stand, wherever you sell your products. There are four different plans for merchants to choose from. Each one provides a unique experience for the businesses they attempt to accommodate.

The basic plan is $29.00 a month and offers:
  • In Person swipe: 2.7% + 30¢
  • Unlimited products
  • No transaction fees
  • Unlimited devices
  • 24/7 Support
The Shopify Regular Plan is $79 a month and includes:

  • No transaction fees
  • Unlimited devices
  • 24/7 Support
  • Gift cards
  • Professional reports
The Advanced Package is $299 a month and includes:
  • In Person swipe: 2.4% + 30¢
  • Unlimited products
  • No transaction fees
  • Unlimited devices
  • 24/7 Support
  • Gift cards
  • Professional reports
  • Advanced report builder

No Setup Fees

There are no setup fees, and you are free to cancel your account at any time, with no penalties or fines. While you can sign up for an annual or biennial plan, most just go month-to-month. To cancel, simply cancel your account through the control panel of your site. Pay upfront for the annual to save 10%, or pay biennially and save 20% when paid up front. Upgrading or downgrading your account can be done easily as well. Shopify is very user-friendly and allows for the customer to tailor the site to their own preferences.

The Bad

  • Nothing bad to report

Nothing Bad to Report

Nothing bad to report. No contracts, no cancellation fees, no hidden fees and a variety of monthly services makes Shopify a great choice.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is that Shopify is a necessity for any self-employed merchandiser. Three levels of service provided on a no contract, month to month status, with no hidden charges and no charges for services not required for the individual business, Shopify seems to be a service of the people, for the people. A great addition to any small retail business.

Bad Shopify Kew, VIC

Horrible Shopify deshopified my business. It was bad enough that we were struggling, since the “virus” wiped us out, so we finally get some orders worth over $1400 which was processed like normal and we fulfilled the order by sending the goods out, then horrible Shopify froze our account and demanded photo id to be uploaded. No explanation. No reason. Nothing. They waited until our customer paid and then they blackmailed us to supply id, after we have had our store for years. When we refused to surrender our own privacy and security, then simply kept the money. Then we issued a refund to our customer after speaking to them about what happened, and Shopify informed us in writing that this refund will be taken out of the frozen amount, resulting in a nil situation ending the matter. But, unbelievably, Shopify went into our private bank account and stole the refunded money from our account. So now we have lost over $1400 in goods suppkied to our customer, and the refund tgat we issued them, totalling $2800! So if you want to go with, or stay with Shopify go ahead, but remember my story that one day Shopify will screw you too, when you least expect it!

Easily the worst option. Not only is 2.4% and 30 cents per transaction draconian and greedy, but they are also terrible at payouts. At one point they owed me $30,000. I would argue that it’s a fake business. They need to stick to what they are good st which is developing. I switched to Chase Payment tech and the processing isn’t as fast but my cost basis is 1.5 % less and I get all of my money the next day. Any payment processing system that takes more than 1.5 % and doesn’t get your money to you the right owner the next day should be banned from this side of the business. Steer clear. Warning: Shopify also scams you out of .5 % of all of your transactions if you use a different payment terminal. I recommend them only if you are a baby business out of your garage and you can’t manage your money.

Horrible!!!!!! Shopify payments is an absolute joke. They hold your money for 2 business days before releasing the funds to your bank account. Causing HUGE issues if you dropship. Then they blame it on your bank. When in fact I have used the same bank account to receive payments for 6+ years and every other platform we use deposits the funds right away. They try to control how and when your deposits are released. Powered by Stripe. But none of the funds or analytics show up in your Stripe account. They are only bound by Canada laws and can restrict US sellers at many levels when it comes to accepting payments and the time it takes to process them. Very bad choice of platform for anyone who needs the funds deposited fast, or at least within 24hrs. Shopify Payments is not worth the headache. You would be better off using a third party processor or a different platform all together.

DO NOT use Shopify Payments or even Shopify. In terms of add ons, getting a theme, tweaks to that theme, and the 2% transaction fee IN ADDITION TO a monthly fee is an unbelievably bad deal if you're doing any kind of volume. Far better and cheaper to just hire a developer to get you set up on Wordpress/Woocommerce. You get nothing for that 2%. It's there to make you use Shopify Payments. However, Shopify Payments can and WILL kick you off for the most insane of reasons. Why? Because the 2% is more than they would get from the processing fees, so it is a better deal for them. They bait you in with the allure of Shopify Payments and their platform and then yank Shopify Payments from under you to up their earnings. The worst part of Shopify is the SEO ranking comparative to doing a Wordpress site. My company has a unique name, got a decent amount of traffic (a thousand plus per day), and for the first 6 months we were on the 11th page of Google or lower for organic search results of our exact, unique name. After 9 months we are finally at the bottom of page 1 or the top of page 2. The pages in front of us are years old and there is no way they have even a fraction of our traffic, but it doesn't matter: Shopify stores don't rank well. To compare, I have a blog using Wordpress/Woocommerce with a slightly more common name than my business on Shopify. We were on the 1st page within a few days. Top spot in under 2 weeks. That is the difference. Stay FAR away from Shopify if you are trying to run a legitimate business.

We had Authorize.net for 15 years. When we switched our platform to Shopify, we decided to try Shopify payments. Two problems, they shut you down for no reason, you cannot reach them and then they say it is a stress test, sometimes on a busy day. I was finally told that I did nothing wrong. No explanation, days go by and they hold any money while they review your account. One time they asked for documentation on Disney, Star Wars and any branded item from the brand itself, which allowed us to sell. We sell 16,000 items with a very few being branded. We switched back to Authorize. Secondly, if you partially refund an order and the customer does a charge back, they refund the entire order again. Their representatives say this is the way it is done by everyone. One time I refunded about 110.00 on a 160.00 order. The customer filed a charge back. They did everything right, documenting what I had refund but they refunded 160.00 again. Again, they said this is the way it is done. You cannot reach anyone or get any help or explanation. We have been in business 30 years and run a reputable business. Do not use Shopify Payments. They are out of Canada and do not follow USA protocol and there is nothing you can do since they are in Canada.

Comparable in rates/prices to other major payment systems. A simple/good option if you are going to be working with Shopify. Shopify's customer service is excellent though. I was very impressed with how I was treated by support representatives.
