It's hard to go wrong when choosing between Aetna and Mutual of Omaha Medicare plans. However, there are a few differences worth understanding before making your choice. Mutual of Omaha only offers Prescription Drug Plans (PDP) and Medicare supplement insurance (Medigap). Aetna offers these plans in addition to Medicare Advantage plans. If you're opting for an Advantage plan over Original Medicare, you'll need to go with Aetna.
Both companies have two prescription drug plan options and offer multiple Medigap plans. The Medigap plans are standardized across companies as far as coverage goes. Mutual of Omaha gets our recommendation for Medigap plans because the company includes an Additional Benefit Rider that gives plan members access to discounts on specified health services.

Aetna is my Medicare supplement. I have had no issues with their handling of any medical visits or procedures. All claims seem to be handled in a timely manner and I receive a monthly activity statement of my benefits

My doctor sent the request for a prior authorization of LIDOCAINE 5% OINTMENT on 4/9/24. First time I’ve been told it can take up to 3 days. Next time I called on the fifth day and asked representative Angelica(?) to submit a grievance for such a service. She’s got disconnected. Representative Dan said the process can take up to 17 days. What kind of patients can be satisfied with such service waiting in pain for 17 days?!

Had a Part D (Rx) Medicare plan with Mutual of Omaha. Rx prices were reasonable and communication was good from the company. I dropped them after a year when the monthly premium went up by 40% (and I only had three Tier 1 or 2 medications), so I switched to a more reasonable and cost efficient plan.

I had to have two older crowns replaced per my dentist. Mutual of Omaha disagreed after the procedure was completed. My dentist appealed multiple times to the point that the doctor actual spoke to the dentist employed by Mutual of Omaha to oversee claims. My dentist was told by this individual that the procedure was necessary however insurance still won't cover it.
Aetna offers several types of Medicare Advantage plans. Its plan network structures include HMO plans with only in-network coverage and PPO plans that offer both in- and out-of-network coverage. Its HMO-POS plan primarily offers in-network coverage and has some flexibility to see out-of-network providers for specified services. It also offers a Medicare Advantage Dual Special Needs plan for those qualifying for Medicare and Medicaid. To see what's available in your area, you'll need to input your zip code online.
Aetna's Medicare Advantage plans are an alternative to Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). These plans cover the same services as Original Medicare. Advantage plans also usually offer additional perks and coverage. Some include prescription drug coverage.
Other perks Aetna offers with these plans include the following: SilverSneakers® fitness membership, Resources for Living®, prescription home delivery, and a 24/7 nurse hotline. Its Resources for Living® program helps you find services in your community and offers support to caregivers. Aetna is a great choice if you're looking for a Medicare Advantage plan.
If you have Original Medicare and need to buy a prescription drug plan, both Aetna and Mutual of Omaha have two options and both offer home delivery. Aetna's options are SilverScript Choice and SilverScript Plus. Mutual of Omaha's are Mutual of Omaha Rx Value and Mutual of Omaha Rx Plus. These plans are very similar, but the SilverScript Plus plan has slightly lower copays for tier two drugs than the Mutual of Omaha Rx Plus plan.
Because the prescription drug plans are so similar, you'll want to compare each plan's drug formularies to see if your preferred medications are covered and the pharmacy network in your area. Depending on your prescription needs, you'll also want to carefully compare out-of-pocket costs for each tier and understand what the coverage gap is.
Medigap plans help control your out-of-pocket costs for Original Medicare. What each plan covers is standardized throughout the United States even though private companies sell the plans. Mutual of Omaha offers Plan F, High-Deductible Plan F, Plan G, and Plan N. Aetna's Medigap offerings vary by state. In California, for example, it offers Plan A, Plan F, Plan F, High-Deductible Plan F, Plan G, and Plan N.
While Aetna may offer more variety in some states than Mutual of Omaha, Mutual of Omaha gets the recommendation for Medigap plans because its plans include an Additional Benefits Rider.
With this rider you can participate in Mutually Well, save on Amplifon Hearing Health Care, and discounts through EyeMed Vision Care. Mutually Well is Mutual of Omaha's program that offers discounts up to 30 percent on healthy living products and services, a fitness program, 30-day walking program, and personalized weekly planning for nutrition, fitness, and wellness.
These additional benefits support you in your health and make Mutual of Omaha's Medigap plans stand out from other insurers' plans.
You'll need to carefully compare Aetna and Mutual of Omaha's Part D prescription drug plans on your own to see which one best meets your needs. Mutual of Omaha gets our recommendation for Medicare supplement plans (Medigap) because access to the additional discounts and benefits make hearing care, vision care, and staying active more affordable and easier.
