The Good

  • No Base Unit
  • Variety of Medical Alert Options
  • Health and Safety Packages
  • No Contracts or Cancellation Fees
  • IAED Certified Agents
  • Customer Service
  • Fastest Call Response Time

No Base Unit

Lively Mobile is an all-in-one lightweight device (.088 lbs) with no invasive base station required. Lively Mobile works like a small cell phone so you can take it anywhere, and it has no home base unit or tether to a landline. This makes GreatCall's medical alert systems extremely easy to use and set up.

Variety of Medical Alert Options

GreatCall has additional options outside of the typical medical alert device. The company offers smartphone and flip phone options that are made specifically with older adults in mind and also act as a medical alert device. Whether a customer is looking for a smartphone medical alert device, a more simple flip phone medical alert device, a medical alert button only, or a wearable medical alert device, GreatCall has every option.

Keep in mind, capabilities with each medical alert plan vary depending on your chosen monthly plan. The information listed below includes all capabilities in the most advanced plans, so the more basic plans will not include all listed items. The complete medical alert options and offerings are below:

Jitterbug Smart2

The Jitterbug Smart2 is a smartphone and cellphone service with a built-in medical alert device. The upfront cost is $149.99 with a monthly fee ranging from $19.99–$34.99 as well as a $25 activation fee. The GreatCall Jitterbug has a large 5.5" screen, voice typing capabilities, and a front-facing speaker for more quality sound. The battery life is long-lasting, and the phone includes a 13MP built-in camera with a flash as well as a 5Star urgent response button. It also includes Internet access.

The Jitterbug Smart has added capabilities to enhance the user's everyday experience. You can receive daily, automated check-in calls that ask questions about pain levels, appetite, and overall well being as well as receive a weekly wellness call from a wellness expert. A personal operator is also available for finding addresses and phone numbers. The Jitterbug includes daily health tips for seniors directly from the American Heart Association and suggested brain games to challenge the mind and improve your memory.

To further health assistance and emergency precautions, the Jitterbug Smart gives you access to urgent care 24/7 to speak with a nurse or doctor without an appointment. You can also request your prescriptions for common medications through the phone call. Caregivers can download the GreatCall Link app to stay informed of the health and safety of GreatCall product owners, and there is a product replacement available so if the Jitterbug owner ever loses or breaks the phone, GreatCall will replace it.

Lively Flip

The GreatCall Lively Flip is a mobile device similar to the Jitterbug Smart2 except it is a flip phone rather than a smartphone. It is $99.99 upfront with a monthly fee ranging from $19.99–$34.99 as well as a $25 activation fee. The phone has an Urgent Response button on the keypad for easy, 24/7 access to the Lively Response Team, should you need any assistance whatsoever. It is also compatible with Amazon Alexa, so you can use your voice to send texts, make calls, and more.

Lively Mobile Plus

Lively Mobile is GreatCall's medical alert emergency pendant. It is $49.99 upfront with a monthly fee ranging from $24.99–$39.99 and a $25 activation fee.  It has a proprietary design made by GreatCall that is simple to use. It has a loud integrated two-way speaker that turns on the moment you press the button for assistance. It includes 5Star urgent response, urgent care, the GreatCall Link app, fall detection, and product replacement. It also has GPS location technology and is completely waterproof, so you won't have any functionality issues if used in the shower or other wet places.

Lively Wearable2

Lively Wearable is the GreatCall medical alert device that is wearable as a wristband or necklace. It costs $49.99 upfront and comes with a $14.99 monthly fee and $25 activation fee. It includes 5Star urgent response, the GreatCall Link app, and fall detection. It includes GPS location technology and the alert device is waterproof, so it's safe to use in the shower and easy to wear. Lively Wearable2 also has up to four months of battery life, a step tracker, and daily health tips. You will need to have an Android 7.0 or iPhone iOS 11 or later to use the Lively Wearable2.

No Contracts or Cancellation Fees

GreatCall offers cutting-edge medical monitoring services to its customers by doing away with long-term contracts, a unique option for seniors that many companies don't offer. The company also offers a proprietary medical alert device with an equipment fee of $49.99 and monthly plans starting at $19.99. This includes full service including 5Star Urgent Response, GreatCall Link, fall detection, free device replacement, and Urgent Care nurse hotline.

Many medical alert companies make customers pay extra for fall detection and don't include it in the base monthly monitoring fee. With fall detection being one of the most important capabilities to customers, it's great that GreatCall offers it at no extra cost.

IAED Certified Agents

5Star Urgent Response Service provides easy-to-use and reliable urgent care access to IAED (International Academies of Emergency Dispatch) certified 5Star agents who will confirm the customer’s location, evaluate the situation, and call for the appropriate assistance. Trained in CPR and other emergency procedures, they can assist in any uncertain or unsafe situation, 24 hours a day. Whether a user is lost in an unfamiliar part of town, walking in a parking lot at night, or experiencing a medical issue, 5Star service can help.

Service includes:

  • 911 Support and Follow-Up — 5Star Agents can call 911 on your behalf or conference you in.
  • Your Personal Profile — The secure information you choose to provide in your personal profile empowers your 5Star Agent with critical details for faster, more personalized assistance.
  • Non-Emergency Assistance — The 5Star Agent can contact anyone on your list if you need help that doesn't require emergency services.
  • Reliable Nationwide Coverage — It functions anywhere wireless coverage is available.
  • Multilingual Support — 5Star Agents can provide translation support for over 100 languages.

Customer Service

GreatCall does not outsource its customer service to third parties. All GreatCall customer service and emergency service agents are based in the United States and receive extensive training. The award-winning, patient customer service team is there to help you with health and safety forms, product and service questions, and anything else you may need from the call center.

Fastest Call Response Time

Users get peace of mind knowing that they have fast access to help as soon as it is needed. By pressing the 5Star Urgent Response button on the medical alert device, a user gets immediate and unlimited access to IAED Certified 5Star agents who will confirm your location, evaluate your situation, and get you the help you need.

The Bad

  • Fees
  • Equipment and Activation Fee
  • GreatCall Reviews

Fees

GreatCall functions a bit differently than its primary competitors. The company has added equipment fees as well as activation fees for its alert systems, and this even goes for the basic medical alert system. Some customers have complained about the added telecommunication fees appearing on their accounts, which are required by federal law for these kinds of service providers and customers.

However, when averaged over a year of service, Lively Mobile offers the lowest cost monthly mobile service of any other major medical alert available.

Equipment and Activation Fee

GreatCall has an equipment fee as well as an activation fee, while some medical alert providers don't require either. After you purchase your equipment, pay for activation, and cover your monthly fee, you're having to pay quite a bit more than what other competitors typically charge.

GreatCall Reviews

The majority of GreatCall reviews are 1–2 stars, complaining the company has poor customer service, equipment issues, and expensive prices. Although GreatCall has some positive reviews as well, it's concerning that over half of the reviews are negative. We suggest looking at other top-rated medical alert companies with positive reviews before making your purchasing decision.

gavel

The Bottom Line

GreatCall is a versatile company that offers options for medical alert devices. Some of the company's systems offer some of the lowest prices in the industry and offer multiple medical alert devices with emergency response features like fall detection. Representatives are rigorously trained to provide you with excellent service. Some customers may be turned off by the upfront equipment fees, but the low monthly fees and not having a long-term contract can offset that price over time. If a potential customer is looking for a low-cost option that combines medical alert functionality with a smartphone device, GreatCall is a viable option. Read GreatCall reviews below to hear what customers have to say.

I love the phone that Great Call provides. Their customer support is good at using simple instructions for how to do things, which is perfect for senior citizens. The technical people have been so helpful. It's a very good phone, and is also an excellent introductory to a smart phone for first time users. Great Call has always been so helpful to answer my questions, whether it's about billing or technical things. They've solved all my problems every time, and they even credit me on my bill sometimes more than I deserve! I've been so impressed with how well they cater to others' needs, and I've already signed up 3 of my friends with them.

Great Call's product is so easy to use. I haven't had to use it, but I carry it around all the time. What really drew me to the medical alert device was the ease of use and how efficient it is with the different things you want to do. It doesn't do apps, but then again I'm not that interested in those anyway. Calling and taking photos is something I use, so the phone has been really great for those purposes.

The simplicity in this device is what I enjoy. I usually put the medical alert device on about 4:30 in the morning, and then I don't take it off until bedtime. All I have to do is recharge it, and every time I call they really help me with my problem. I just feel so comfortable with it there, and I know I can call when I fall. I especially feel comfortable with it when my husband is gone for several hours for dialysis.

I got this medical alert system after I went to the hospital for a broken hip. I thought Great Call was less expensive than others in comparison. I take it in with me when I shower, but I've been lucky in not having to use it yet. I keep it by my bed at night to keep it handy in case I do need it. I have had trouble with it charging, but they sent me a new one. I'm very happy with it, and you really can't beat the price on it. Every time I've had problems, they fix it.

This is a great device to have on trips! I have never really needed to use it, but I keep it in my pocket. Even though I haven't needed to use it before, I once bumped it on accident and heard from them right away, but I explained to them what happened when they called to make sure I was okay. It's a big ball thing that you can either keep in your pocket or around your neck as a necklace. For me, it's just in my way around my neck which is why I just keep it in my pocket. It's worth everything I pay.

I highly recommend this to all my friends. I fell last year and broke my leg. Great Call immediately called an ambulance and then called my niece. They stay d on the phone with me until the ambulance service arrived. Without them I could have been on the floor for many hours or even possibly overnight. This product allows me to live independently in my own home. Thank you so much!!!

When fall was detected I was able to cancel help that was not needed, unlike my best friend who does not have that options, so she could NOT get help if needed. I feel much more confident on the shorter (5') ladders that I used and hope I have not driven any of the service personnel crazy with my cancellations re needing any help.

Great Call appealed to me because my old phone was giving me difficulty. I use it for calls out of state, and it's very dependable. I haven't needed to use the medical alert, but I'm sure it's sufficient if I ever needed to use it. I'm very happy with how convenient it is...I should have gotten it a long time ago.

It is so important to have something on you if you're away from home or have an emergency. I haven't had to use the alert except for the normal calling feature - the phone does everything I need it to do and more. I can't belive that I would have so many features included for the price I paid.

I had a good experience with Great Call's customer service when I helped my mother get all set up with their medical alert system. I had seen a lot of advertisement about it and after doing lots of research, I decided to get it for my mother who lives alone. It has worked great for her.

I got Great Call's medical alert system for my mother. The customer support is very open to help her with whatever she needs. I feel very happy that I was finally able to get the cell phone for my mother. She enjoys using it and it's very intuitive for her to use. It's not frustrating to her like other ones have been in the past.

The phone has big numbers on it which is good for seniors, because we have a hard time reading small print. The loud speaker on it also makes it easier for us to use. It's got everything we need for seniors, you can take pictures, there's a phone book, and it helps us very much.

It's too hard to carry. I'm 83, and it's too large to be around my neck. I passed out on the kitchen floor and I didn't have it on me when I came to because of that. I think they need to have something like a wristwatch that people could use instead.

We have the Jitterbug phone, which works fine because it's pre-programmed with numbers and all we have to do is select whoever we want to call and push the "yes" button. It's a value to me at $24 a month just for my peace of mind.

I purchased an alert for my husband and father. I have been very pleased with the customer service and response! I compared the cost to the length of time in business. This service uses Verizon. That was important to me because my father lives in a rural area. The alerts have gone off for several falls and also several false alarms from what the company questioned as falls. I certainly would rather them call the alarm and check on them to see and they have done that. This is a great water proof device for the money. I have been very pleased! One piece of advice is to set up ALL the info on the address, medicines, contact info online before they begin wearing the device.

I have had my device for over 5-years. Never once has it failed me. I have had to use it only 3 times. Their people were VERY polite and helpful. They even encouraged my to test the device now and then to make sure all was in order. I don't know why there are may who complain about the service. I would suggest that you only use the Lively Wearable and NOT the cell phone. Looking over the reviews t looks like most of the complaints are with the cell phone devices like the Jitterbug. The lively wearable has only two controls: a on/off button and an emergency help button. If you need help just push the button and talk to the technician hands free with the Lively Wearable. No complicated anything. The best thing is that the Lively Wearable works anywhere, at home or away from home. No base station is required. The Lively Wearable is pure simplicity.

I have had the Great Call 5 Star for over 5 years. Thank God I have not had to use it for any emergencies. I did use it one time shortly after getting it to check if I was getting reception & 1 time when I accidentally pushed the button while working in the shop. Both times there was an Great Call person responding in seconds. Love the fact that family gets notified immediately. Also like the gps so family can check on my location especially when traveling. Hope the new unit is available soon as the battery in mine is losing power after years of use. Would encourage anyone to look into getting one if Great Call products.

I bought the Great Call device for my mother. She has fallen on 3 different occasions. All 3 times the call center persons have been very helpful, they stay on line till she has been gotten up from the floor. We have had the device for over 5 years, and we have not needed it till the last 18 months. Never sorry that I have bought it. My mind is at ease with her having it. I recommend it HIGHLY to anybody that ask. I researched all the others out there and this one DOES NOT HAVE A BASE STATION TO RELAY your troubles. This one goes anywhere we go and all I have to do is take the charging cradle. If no power, I plug in the car adaptor.

I do not have my cell phone thru GreatCall, so there is no bundling. I have the GreatCall Splash which has now been replaced by the Lively. The monthly charge is less than models with less features. I have had mine for over two years. It works on GPS so there is no range limit from the base station and I can use it while traveling. I have tested it when not near my home and the GreatCall operator told me right where I was. The only concern that I have is that the battery in the Splash is not replaceable, that design may have been corrected in the Lively model. By putting my Splash unit on the included charger, I have had no problems with battery life.

I have had this for about 6 years. I have never had a problem with it and needed 3 times. Once when I was 1900 miles away from home. I had help that time and in about 4 minutes the paramedics arrived. The big test came on that day, because I had not notified of where I was, the address or anything else. They pinpointed my exact location and it saved my life. What I also like about it is there is an app for smartphone and my kids can track me on the internet if they wish to. I have an older locator that works just fine the new one have a fall indicator. The price is less than 25 dollars a month and I go nowhere without it. It recharges in minutes and a charge will last about 2 days. I can't imagine anyone not loving this.

I had the original Splash until the new Live device was made available. The Splash was heavy to wear around my neck so I usually put it in my pocket (with the lanyard hanging out), which would not have been convenient had I needed to use it if I fell. I did try Great Calls on their phone but I don't always carry my phone with me so after a few months, I went back to the waterproof Splash. When my Splash died, I ordered the Lively. Had a few problems, but they were quickly taken care of. I have 6 grandkids ages 16 - 4 and they all know how to use my device if needed. My 4 year old granddaughter accidentally pushed the button on day and I let the call go thru so she could hear the person on the other end while I asked questions about how my grand kids should use it. I was told they should push to contact the call center, as should I, as they have all my medical info and could then call emergency help if needed. I appreciate the fact that when I do call for any reason I get someone in the US that speaks English. I don't like the bright blinking light at night but I cover my device with a piece of cloth that blocks the light but is still easily accessible if I should need it. I have my charger on my night table so it is in reach should I need it. I have recommended this to many people because of its ease of use and cost. My only complaint is that I can't upgrade to fall detection without a bunch of other stuff I don't now need. Hope that is changed soon.

I have had my device for approximately 5 years. It has been a God-send to me. I've always felt comfortable with it. When I had my old one, I used to bump it accidentally, and someone always responded immediately. I am very impressed with how quickly the response to a call is. -- Also I have misplaced my device 3 times. Each time when I call, I get the "ping" until I find it, usually in the house... One time they told me the address where I could find it, and it was at my doctor's office. I had it in my pocket, and when she told me to get up on the table, it must have fallen out. This all makes me feel comfortable and safe. --I also like the fact that I can take my device into the shower with me. I have told many people about how much I like it.

Positive report: Not sure how the phone aspect plays into this security service. We have had no problems with this emergency service. My experience: At age 82, I am a widow residing in a Senior Living Community. Since my attack of TIC's (temporary symptoms of stroke) in April this year, my daughter searched for a quality emergency system for my safety. I do occasionally lose my balance and fall, unable to get up without assistance. I drove my car until recent medical emergency and loved idea of GPS locating me away from home, as well as SPLASH GreatCall system would contact my daughter of my trauma, if I desired. Also, If another occasion of TIC's or worse happened where my speech was undetectable as occurred previously, emergency service would automatically find me and send paramedics to my rescue. My daughter purchased SPLASH Unit from Walmart for reasonable price. Each service we requested was loaded into the Unit. Each service was priced separately. My daughter followed through from GreatCall instructions by phone and internet, providing all personal information needed. I requested the necklace system to maintain contact with the services. I am glad to have and wear the emergency Unit every day. At night I place the Unit in the recharging cradle making ready to wear next day. GreatCall sent me the soft sturdy, black , easy to fasten magnet closure to hold the emergency Unit around my neck. I get compliments on the necklace from other residents in our community. I even wear the Unit in the shower sometimes when I feel a little unstable or in more pain than usual. I've used the service a few times this year for help in getting up from falls and once when I began feeling the TIC's symptoms. Emergency services were dispensed promptly each time for me in the DFW, TX area of services. Have a few accidental responses from GreatCall due to quick sensor movements detected on my end of the line. So glad my daughter chose this system. I will maintain this service indefinitely.

I am stunned by all the negative reviews. I've had my 5Star device for close to 3-4 yrs. and until this past Aug. never had to use it. Accidently pushed the button a couple of times and had IMMEDIATE response, loud & clear. Realize that when the red light starts to flash or the signal starts, the device needs to be charged. I think some of the problems are that some of the people didn't understand what needs to be done to keep the device active. No I don't like that in the night I have to place it away from me to be charged, but most of the time, it's where it should be -- on my body. Where it was this past Aug. when I DID need to push the button -- & I got IMMEDIATE response and when the agent realized I couldn't tell her what she needed to know, she IMMEDIATELY told me she was contacting Emergency Paramedics & within minutes they were in my house taking care of me & getting me off to the ER. I praise the 5Star medic alert GPS system and urge my friends to get one all the time. I'm sorry to see these bad reviews!!

Purchased at drug store, connected on line and filled in a very comprehensive questionnaire so the call center would have all pertinent information at hand in case of emergency. It is not necessary to register a phone number as it is GPS sensitive. Can be used anywhere cell phone reception is available across the nation, etc. at home area or vacation. Battery light gives warning of running down and it usually last 2.5 to 3 days without charging although it is suggested that you charge it every night. Both my husband and I have one which he hangs on a 24" chain and I use a 16" chain which I make a loop around my bra strap and tuck the alert into the top of my bra. out of sight. Either of us can press our medical alerts and get help for the other. We are very pleased.

Anytime I contact Great Call's customer support, they answer my questions. When using the medical alert device, I only need to push the button and something happens!

I put Great Call's medical alert device on every morning, and wear it all day. It seems to work, and everytime I've used it, I get the results I want.

They've very helpful, they always get right to me if I have a problem. They're very prompt, and I feel very secure with it. It is kind of pricey, but the service is great.

It's a reasonable price and convenient. My only complaint is that it has to go on the charger every so often. But, that would be with any of them so it's fine.

This is my go to emergency phone, which I fortunately have not had to use yet. Everyone there at customer support is very pleasant to talk to and they help a lot.

I take it with me wherever I go, and it gives me a little more confidence. Every time I call in to test it they've been really nice, and I have had no problems so far.

I got this because of the fall detection, I wear it all the time but still haven't fallen. I've been very happy with it and they have immediate responses.

The first person we talked to wanted to charge us 25 instead of the advertised 15. When we called back the next day the new lady was really nice and gave us the 15.

I found this through the advertisement on the AARP, and every time I have a question all I do is hit that little button and somebody is right there to answer my question.

I recently got my LivelyFlip phone and I love everything about it. Before and since then I have had occasion to call Customer Support and I received courteous professional help each time with highly satisfactory result. I have read numerous decidedly bad reviews from GreatCall customers, but my experience has just been excellent. I highly recommend GreatCall and the LivelyFlip phone. First and foremost, GreatCall has the best customer service I've had the pleasure of working with. "Alex", and many others I spoke to went above and beyond. When we had to return the phone for lack of signal in the immediate area, they gave my father a complete refund, and made the process very simple. I honestly wished it would have worked out, because while my experience was brief, I'm now a giant fan of GreatCall. I believe they truly care about their customers and will try to help you have the best service. If you are in the market, I hope you give them a try.

I GIVE THE JITTER BUG FLIP 5 STARS FOR EASE OF USE ,PRICING CUSTOMER SERVICE. I received the phone from amazon. Accidently plugged it in out of box before activating it. Had to call customer service to activate it. They were very nice. We had to remove back and reinstall battery to start it. She (the rep) was very patient with me. The price per month is very reasonable because i'm on a fixed income. Ease of use.Very easy to use! Unit was delivered quickly, am very pleased.
