The Good

  • Easy-to-Use Equipment
  • Mobile App
  • TeleHealth Plan

Easy-to-Use Equipment

Automated Security Systems (ASA) began offering medical monitoring and alerting services in 1988 and has grown to offer their customers a suite of protection products including home medical monitoring with fall protection, medication monitoring, mobile monitoring and their TeleHealth plan. The equipment is easy to use and intuitive and all systems are professionally installed and receive free monthly checks to verify that the system Is in proper working order. These monthly checks are performed remotely.

Mobile App

Two of the features which are specifically unique for ASA customers are the mobile app monitoring and the TeleHealth plan. Medical monitoring via a mobile app provides a lower-cost alternative for protection away from home. Seniors subscribing to the service pay $14.99/month for monitoring via a mobile app which is downloaded to their phone. Should they need assistance, they simply open the app and tap the proper icon on their screen.

TeleHealth Plan

For those with chronic health problems which are regularly monitored by a physician, the TeleHealth plan allows for information to be transmitted to the doctor's office. Some of the conditions (there are over 100 health management programs included and available) which may benefit from using TeleHealth monitoring include: Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Diabetes, Asthma, Cancer, Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), Chronic pain, Depression, Hypertension, and Pediatric Asthma.

The Bad

  • Range
  • Obtaining Help
  • Installation and Activation Fees

Range

The range for the transmitter units is less than that which is offered by many of ASA's competitors. While adequate for many with a range of 600 feet, this may not be enough for others. The mobile app protection is unique and innovative, as well as reasonably priced.

Obtaining Help

However, the process of obtaining help is questionable. Depending on the nature of the emergency, one may not have the capacity or ability to open an app on their Smartphone and request help. This protection requires carrying the phone either in a pocket or a clip, which may be cumbersome for many seniors.

Installation and Activation Fees

Installation is provided by a professional installer for no cost, but there is an activation fee of $25.

The Bottom Line

Those needing advanced care or daily monitoring of a chronic condition can benefit from the TeleHealth plan or the medication monitoring. ASA has several products which are cutting-edge and offer features in addition to those offered by the competition. These are priced at a premium and require more substantial lifestyle changes than many might be able to adapt into their day-to-day lives. For those who are comfortable with technology and will be able to use these products, ASA is a good option. For most, a simpler program or equipment will probably fit their lifestyle and needs sufficiently.
