Acadian On Call was started in 1991 as a company that prides itself on going above and beyond industry standards and requirements in the medical alert industry. The company's history as an Ambulance service and paramedic training facilities made expanding into the On Call Services niche a natural transition. Today, Acadian On Call monitors and partners with more than 550 security companies across the nation, responding to more than 4 million alarms per year. The company maintains a close partnership with local fire and security companies, along with a qualified staff of certified dispatchers.

The Good

  • Price
  • Contract
  • 24/7 Monitoring and Medication Reminders
  • Customer service
  • Quality equipment
  • Convenient

Price

Depending on the subscription, Acadian charges anywhere from $24.95–$29.95 per month for around-the-clock monitoring and emergency dispatch services. There is no activation fee or equipment costs associated with setting up the account.

Contract

Acadian offers members a monthly subscription service. There is no contract. If at any point members would like to cancel their Acadian services, they can do so at any time without charge. And if you cancel within the first 30 days, you can get a full refund. If you discontinue service after paying a lump sum, you get the months you pre-paid for refunded to you.

24/7 Monitoring and Medication Reminders

Acadian monitors 24/7 and Free Medication reminders allow members to schedule the days and times they need to take medications using Acadian's website. The medical alert console announces the reminders at the scheduled times.

Customer Service

Acadian has specially trained customer service representatives on call 24/7. Members have the ability to order online or by calling in, and there is an online support team prepared to answer any and all questions.

Quality Equipment

Acadian's products are waterproof up to 3 meters deep and have a 2-Way Mobile Button that allows you to connect instantly to the monitoring center. The base station in your home has a built-in speaker that becomes a high powered speakerphone, allowing you, or your spouse to have two-way voice communication with a medically trained dispatcher, even without the use of a telephone.

Convenient

Acadian's devices, depending on the subscription, do not require a landline or cell phone. The home base unit functions as a cellular device.

The Bad

  • Warranty limitations
  • Design limitations
  • Limited medical information

Warranty Limitations

Compared to its competitors, Acadian is much more conservative about full refund return policies. The company's 30-day risk-free trial sounds good, but you have to jump through multiple hoops to get the full refund. The requirements are as follows:

  • The customer must call Acadian's customer service number to inform them they no longer want the equipment and want a refund.
  • Make sure equipment is in the original package, postmarked within 30 days of placing the order.
  • Mail back the equipment to them.
  • Take responsibility for all the shipping costs, which are non-refundable.
  • And if the equipment is lost or damaged during delivery, you won't get your refund.

Acadian's strict return policies insinuate that the company has a lot of confidence in the financial and physical well-being of its customers. To require that unsatisfied customers ensure their return package for $250.00 (on top of the shipping costs) is a bit of a stretch for many elderly people and their families. Such strict return policies mean you have to be crystal clear on the fine print prior to the 30-day trial and plan on possibly having to return it by saving the original package. For people needing medical alert service, remembering finite details is not the best customer service policy.

Design Limitations

Similar to other devices in the medical alert industry, Acadian's products are designed to be attractive and "normal" but are still obviously medical alert bracelets, watches, and necklaces. Although an argument can be made that easy-to-press buttons are hard to make look "en vogue", it may be off-putting to seniors who are self-conscious. Some competitors are already producing alert button wristwear that mimics fashionable everyday watches.

Limited Medical Information

Some medical alert companies offer profiles with customer's medical information. Upon signup, Acadian members are asked to fill out a profile with name and address information for EMT responders but it seems to lack information on medical issues and things like allergies to medication, which can be lifesaving in cases where the patient can't talk.

The Bottom Line

Acadian On Call's years of industry expertise make it a viable consideration for home care alert emergency support. The company's emergency response service representatives seem to have more training than most industry competitors. There are other companies with more free benefits and more fashionable call button devices, but the company has competitive, low monthly subscription prices with quality, top-of-the-line product features. Acadian On Call makes it easy to choose from a landline, DSL, or mobile/GPS phone service.

I have not been with Acadian on Call very long but so far, I am happy I joined the program. The people I deal with are friendly and helpful. They are always ready and willing to answer questions. I make an occasional test of my connection and it has always worked perfectly well. I have not had to use it for a real emergency so I cannot comment on that but I did use the ambulance service once for my wife and it was absolutely satisfactory.

My mother has Acadian On Call. She is 94 years old. About 6 weeks ago I checked her unit and it was not working so I went out and purchased new batteries (camera 123 battery which cost about $10) After inserting the new battery, it still was not working so I called the company and was told that my mother had an old unit and they will send a new one which took 10 days to receive (during this time my mother had no service at all! And why would they not send the new unit BEFRORE deactivating the old one???When I received the new base unit and batteries it seemed to work but the next day it was not when I tested it. I called the company and they sent a new battery (again I had to wait another 7 days for this to arrive. It is still not working so they told me they would send a new base unit with new batteries...still waiting and I currently have only 1 battery so none to charge in the unit while the one is in the pendant?. Needless to say, I have called and left many messages yesterday and today (found it strange that I reached a voicemail box as usually someone answers? ) and no one has returned my call? I called my brother who pays for it and complained to him but in the meantime my mother has no service! I'm frustrated and praying that my mother doesn't fall and need to call for help because it DOES NOT WORK!!!

When given the opportunity to use Acadian On Call, they were very helpful. We only stopped the service due to my mother moving to a facility that had an emergency call system built in.

Were having false alarms with LifeStation and false alarms with my mom so decided to switch to Acadian. Well, it's gotten worse. In a little over a week she's had over 10 false alarms, sometimes the unit goes off when she sits up on the couch! Sometimes it goes off when she's asleep not even wearing the pendent (huh? Was the same with LifeStation). Called them up about it and they said it's just that the pendant is sensitive and that's all there is. If she wants a non-fall sensor they can send that out to her. What a piece of .....

My experience is almost identical as Willemina (see below) so I am not going to waste my time writing a long review. We have used this service for many years and in the last 2 or 3 years customer support has deteriorated to an alarming level (pun intended). It is now so bad as to be useless . When you can't contact a medical alert company with their equipment or by phone it is time to move on.
