The Good

  • Variety of Life Insurance Products
  • Living Benefits
  • Over 150 Years of Service

Variety of Life Insurance Products

Life insurance rates are determined by the size of the death benefit, the kind of life policy purchased, and the underwriting process. Life insurers do underwriting to analyze risk factors like age, current health, and health history.

National Life Group has a nice array of life insurance policies. Its permanent life insurance options are especially robust. National Life Group offers:

  • Term life insurance
  • Whole life insurance
  • Universal life insurance
  • Variable universal life insurance
  • Indexed universal life insurance

With so many options, most people should be able to find the right kind of insurance policy to match their budget and insurance coverage needs.

The website provides clear and basic information about each policy type, making it easy to see what the benefits are for each one.

If you're looking for a term life policy that is simple to apply for and hassle free, National Life Group should fit the bill.

National Life Group's term life policy appears to come with two different options: one with a fixed premium rate and one with increasing premiums as the insured ages. These options allow potential clients to choose which term life insurance structure would work best for their situation.

National Life Group's whole life insurance is a permanent policy that offers insurance coverage for the insured's entire lifetime. It also has level premiums. A whole life policy grows cash value over time and has a set death benefit.

This cash accumulation is a living benefit because you can access it while the insured is alive. Keep in mind that whatever you borrow without paying back will be deducted from the death benefit when you make a claim.

For individuals interested in a universal life insurance policy, National Life Group offers several different kinds of universal life policies.

Its universal life policies offer more flexibility with death benefit amounts and premium payments. This flexibility allows policyholders to adjust coverage and premium payments to reach financial goals. The biggest difference between the kinds of universal life insurance policies is how the cash value is invested.

Indexed universal life insurance policies are invested in a market index fund. Variable universal life insurance policies are invested in different kinds of stocks, bonds, and money market sub-accounts based on the policyholder's preferences.

Living Benefits

Though National Life Group may not have as wide of a selection of life insurance riders compared to others, it does offer living benefits with some of its life insurance policies.

Living benefits allow the policyholder to receive the death benefit early to cover expenses from a terminal illness or long-term care. If you have a chronic illness or experience a critical illness per your insurance policy's criteria, you can also benefit from your life insurance coverage early. This feature is also called an accelerated death benefit. It can come in handy in a difficult situation, so it's nice to have the living benefit included in your insurance product.

Over 150 Years of Service

The company itself has been in business a very long time. The origins of National Life Group go all the way back to 1848, so there is an established reputation for stability. Though it is not the largest life insurance company by any means, it has a lot of experience in the insurance business.

The Bad

  • No Burial Insurance
  • Limited Online Information

No Burial Insurance

National Life Group does not list burial insurance or final expense insurance among its offerings. These policies are a kind of permanent life insurance designed to cover funeral expenses.

Because they're just for funeral expenses, the coverage amounts are lower than other life policies. If you want a final expense policy, you'll need to find another insurance provider.

Limited Online Information

While National Life Group does a good job giving an overview of the kinds of life insurance policies it offers, specific information is limited. For more information on available life insurance riders, policy exclusions, specific investment options for a universal life policy, and life insurance quotes, interested individuals will have to speak with a National Life Group representative.

Life insurance premiums are determined based on the policy-type and underwriting process. The underwriting process determines the risk of insuring the applicant based on age and health information. Because premium rates vary, most life insurers do not list specific premium amounts.

However, meeting with a representative can make it harder for some people to turn down a policy that they might otherwise reconsider because of sales pressure.

Some life insurance companies make this information available online, which is convenient for those researching their options.

gavel

The Bottom Line

National Life Group offers a nice life insurance product selection. Whether you are looking for a term policy or a permanent policy, customers should be able to find a good life policy. National Life Group 's permanent coverage options include whole life and universal life policies. The life insurance company also has received high financial ratings and has several ways that clients can contact the insurance company.

I have been a client for 8 years now and I have an IUL that’s performing incredibly amazing. I’m very satisfied because I never had the stomach to market fluctuations and risk. This product will guarantee my retirement and it is Tax Free! After my family and I watched the documentary The Power of Zero, this strategy started to make sense for all of us. And NLG is a leading company on this product. Overall we are super happy. Thank you National Life Group.

We bought life insurance with other companies before National Life Group and we can't complain about this company. Only if you've had experience with other companies, you would know that all companies are almost the same in terms of service and claim. We've called National Life many times and the customer reps were always so patient and helpful. Of course, sometimes the wait is long but they offer to call back without us waiting on the phone. My father had life insurance with another company. When he passed away, we had to wait for the company to verify before paying the claim. All of the (bad) complaints posted here made me laugh; too ridiculous that they made no sense! If you have one or more life insurance policies, you'd know exactly what I am talking about. I hope review websites like this one would be unbiased to give the fairness that each company deserves.

National Life group is the best life insurance company in USA. It is the oldest (172 years old) and rated #2 out of 900 insurance companies. All these bad reviews I see look like sour grapes case or jealous competitors who are losing business to National Life group and premier financial alliance. I have been a customer, have had friends been recipient of living benefits. If someone (other bad reviewers) are trying to claim fraudulently, they cannot expect ANY company to succumb to their unjustified claims. I have looked at policies from New york Life, Transamerica, AIG, Alianz. None of the above companies listed benefit as detailed as National life group clearly lays it out in their customer policies, very very transparent company. I find that all the bad reviews listed here are from disgruntled competitors.

Wow some of these claims are really unfounded. US has a lot of rules and regulations about insurance. That person claiming he would have lost $13,000 after issue if he canceled is completely bogus. All life insuance has a free-lool by law. Most give 30 days free-look. Surrender charges are properly disclosed on illustrations that requires your signature and even in the policy you received that you have to sign when delivered. I am an NLG client and I have done my due dilligence when I purchase this insurance but for most Life Insurance companies they are mostly all good and heavily regulated. I think theres just others who just want to create a negative false claim. Thats why agents must acquire license and get Error and Ommissions coverage.

So far NLG is the best company with the best products for the right clients in USA. My husband, my younger sister and my colleague in nursing are all living testimony of the Living Benefits. They all received TAX- FREE money from the company when they got diagnosed of cancer of different organs. The money received to take care of their financial obligations while recovering is the best financial blessing in their lifetime! The monetary benefit mitigated the stress one suffers from when critically ill. It was divinely therapeutic. We thank God for National Life Group!

This company is great! Lots of living benefits/riders (lots of qualifying events)/GILR/ etc.. There are reasons why this company has been around for more than 170 years! The financial ratings of the company are great! This is one of the insurance companies I would put my money in and even invest. We can't always blame the carrier and/or agents if client(s) have bad intentions. All I am saying is that investigate all angles and not to always pointing fingers to the insurance carrier.

I have been a client for about for years now and I’m extremely happy. In 2019 I had a sudden cardiac arrest and I was in coma for 4 days. Fortunately I have survived this event, but National Life Group allowed me to accelerate $257K from my policy and helped a lot during those difficult times. I am proud to be their client and I do recommend Living Benefits to everybody.

They have been the best life insurance company that I've ever dealt with (and I've dealt with 4 others throughout my life). Their living benefits are amazing and I actually have had friends who've had to utilize them throughout their life. I asked about the alleged "class action law suit" and this is inaccurate information. It's the internet, so it must be true, not exactly. After getting the facts I'm was 100% comfortable going with this company and sleep easy knowing I'm protected should I need it for a critical, chronic or terminal illness or of course upon death.

This company is a scam! I paid $100 every month for 2 years plus a $2,000 deposit that I got transferred from Allstate life insurance account from other state. BIG MISTAKE! I should have never canceled my account from Allstate. The sales person who sold me the insurance lied to me. They said I could earn interests. Lies! They said I could stop and withdraw all the money accumulated until that point. Lies! They told in case of death, they would cover FUNERAL,BURIAL EXPENSES etc. LIES!! LIES!! LIES!! Now they said in a case of death, they don't give money right away. It could take one month to 2 months! Really? So the person has to be in the morgue all that time? These scammers lie through their teeth. Becareful! Stay away!!

This life insurance company has very poor communication with its policyholders. No one answers the phone and the agent assigned to my policy makes no attempt to communicate with me at all. Online customer service is automated with a 48 hour response time but there has been absolutely NO customer service. I have been waiting for a premium refund since November 2022. No one will respond to my request as of this date, March 30, 2023. It's very frustrating when a company wastes no time to collect money but wastes your time when you attempt to collect yours. No policyholder would know if their product is any good because that policyholder would have to be dead or severely injured to receive the payout. How sad is that?

Comprehensive coverage in living benefits that one does not have to die to use - that is a “must” in an aging society like ours. Low monthly policy fee. Options to use the cash value as a supplement retirement income that removes the worry for living too long.

Horrible experience, Annuity brought in 11/23. Till today 3/3. Still working on where to my send check, at first Agent filed form wrong, reapplied after a month, then wrong address to send check, again wrong zip code. I am not allowed to contact them, only my agent can through emails. Today I still don’t know where to send my check and when they will get it, they are from my 401k accounts. Otherwise I would have cancelled it long time back. Please STAY AWAY from them

NLG's agent completely misrepresented their Flex Life product to both my wife and I. She claimed we would only have to make payments for a given period of time (about 16 years) and then it would be ours without more payments which, after years of payments, turned out not to be true whatsoever and we would potentially have to pay on this policy for the rest of our life. The agent also claimed we would be able to draw an income on it if we decided down the road, which is not possible if one is expecting a proper death benefit at the same time. The agent also did not disclose the high amount of fees on the policy, even when asked specifically about this. Further, they talk up the cash value of the account, which is a pitiful amount due to the "cap to cap" accounting method they use and high fees. You are better off just tossing all your cash in a Vanguard account or similar and calling it a day. After literally months of getting runaround of trying to understand the actual policy between our agents lies and inability to speak basic facts, we were able to at least get our surrender value amounts back without much issue. However, despite giving NLG ample proof of our agents misrepresentation of the policy, they refused to assist in recovering any more of our funds and we have lost roughly $13,000 due to this completely deceitful behavior. At no point was I even issued an apology for any of the confusion anyone caused and everyone involved tried to pretend as if things were clear as day, when they never were ( classic gas lighting tactics here). This company is dishonest and allows their agents to do whatever they want without recourse. I have never been so offended or ripped off in my entire life as literally thousands of dollars went to waste on a policy that had nothing to do with what I was told it was about and was something I simply didn't need at all. Just look at all the negative reviews on this website. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS.

On June 20th I called to cancel my account.  A family member ended up being in the hospital for about 3 weeks on and off. I ended up off work during that time to care for my family.  I received a call from Jose V about a week ago, my original rep. I explained my situation and why I cancel my account.  Jose didn't listen to a word I was saying and kept being pushy about just pushing my payment later in the year.  I flat out told Jose because what happen most of the month in JUNE I needed to close my account. Jose continued telling me about pushing my payments later in the year. I finally told him he was being pushy and hung up.  That was the worst customer service I ever had. Before speaking to Jose I was going to open another account when I was able. Since that experience I will not be opening another account. Another concern, I was told my automatic payments were canceled.  Today I received a letter dated 7/2/23 about my amount due. I called to close the account on 6/20/23. Why did I get this letter??

This company deserves 0/5 stars; however, I unfortunately cannot rate it less than 1/5. They are an absolutely soulless business that preys upon vulnerable groups - in my case, teachers. They have apparently amped up their sales around the peak of COVID and that is exactly when I was suckered in to signing a policy with them. They use an outside agency to solicit people with government retirement plan and offer a "curtesy" overview and explanation of benefits. What they don't tell you is that you will then be targeted and sold predatory polices that do NOT benefit you. I was persuaded to sign up by an agent who told me many false statements and convinced me it would be of such great help to me upon retirement and that I was being offered this special opportunity because of my amazing credit and government job. Told me everything I wanted to hear. A year goes by and I receive a document summarizing my time with them so far and was SHOCKED! I contacted the agent immediately as what they told me was proving to be FALSE! As soon as I got on the phone the agent was tried calming me down and reassuring me everything was fine and even offering to help me take out all of my money that was in the policy (minus the costs of the insurance) and repeated to me several times that I would receive it all. I was hesitant to stay in but that gave me enough peace of mind (so I thought) that I stayed and just lowered my monthly contributions instead of getting rid of it like I wanted to. Here I am, regretting this entirely and the company is basically saying since the pressure and fraud the agent used to get me to sign the documents was only on the phone and not in writing that there is no proof and they are not responsible. They're not taking any accountability for the unlawful practices agents are using to swindle and confuse people. It is absolutely horrific.

I have had the worst and extremely expensive experience in mi life!!! Mr. Domingo H sold me a Life Insurance policy from National Life Group, he sold me on the great benefits but the only beneficiary at the end it was only him. I did trusted him, all the things that he said to me which are so different from the actual policy. This happened two years ago and my goal was not to buy a Life insurance policy, my goal was to invest my money to create equity but he convinced me that investing in a Life Insurance was the best for me. Obviously, because this was he was going to benefit him self more and he sold me a policy for a monthly fee of $600. No person in the right mind would do such a thing unless was told that it was common and not expensive at all. I realize what this man did to me almost a year later when I noticed that my fund was being reduced significantly instead of growing. Immediately tried to cancel the policy so I won’t loose more money but it was too late, from $26,000 that I invested initially there is only $7900 left. Mr. H never told me that it can not be canceled if for any reason I changed my mind. Eventually all my money will go away every month till there is nothing left. I am not saying that this kind of investments are bad, just don’t give the opportunity to people like Mr. Domingo H that would take advantage of you, take your time to read the small print before singing anything or give your money or you would loose it like I did. I do have proof of all these and I am taking this matter to the Illinois Department of Insurance so they can start an investigation.

I am completely frustrated with this company!!! I have been having money taken out of my check for 17 months. I was told I was investing in a 403 B. I was told I would be receiving a packet of information and to this day, I have not. I was also told I would never lose the money I put in. My agent is MIA. After several attempts, I finally got a hold a person on the number I got off the internet. When I called to verify if my agent really even worked for the company, she laughed out loud and said yeas. Unfortunately, I still have not received any information, but as I have researched, I realize now that I was lied to from the get go. How can people to this??? My ignorance. I have less in there than I have put in and it would be even less if I take out due to a surrender fee. I'm going to check to see if there is any legal action I can take. I with I could give them a "0" stars, that would be my selection.

Currently working for a fortune 500 life insurance company. Wanted to learn more about infinite banking/cash flow, but I had purchased with this bubble gum company (National Life Group). .. I didn't know any better than, 6 years into my policy. I thought i would take a trial run on how infinite banking works, glad i did because this is the cost of doing business with not as well established company: 1) long waits for customer service that tell you it takes 10 days to send a check (and yet it takes 1 minute to consistently autodraft your monthly payment) 2) my friends out there considering to do infinite banking with this company, it has taken 35+ days to get my loan check (still in counting) 3) this has opened my eyes to see if I even want to keep this policy going forward, if this company takes this long for a 10k loan I can't imagine what this company will do to my loved ones with a 200k death benefit they have to pay out. Very disappointing and ironically, the only response NLG responded to in these reviews was the veteran they wanted to "help" pay for their monthly premium. "Yea, sure when it comes to your money we'll take it, but when it comes to our contractual responsibility.. we will drag our feet in the sand for as long as it takes". As an experienced individual that grew up in the insurance industry, death benefits are automatically deposited straight into the individuals' bank account for an established insurance company. Also, if you do decide to do infinite banking my friend. Go with a company that doesn't take 45mins on average to answer questions about your policy. Loan requests with these established companies take no more than a 48hr wait after calling to request a loan.

I have been trying for months through my personal efforts and with the help of a financial advisor - to simply move my 403b funds from NLG to the company that my employer uses for such purposes. I have never encountered so much bureaucracy, excuses, etc. to complete this minor transaction. I've been told that my financial advisor can't help me with this, that when I contact them myself it is "in the system" or that some additional form has not been filled out. I'm left with the impression that the company purposely makes these things difficult in order to prevent the exiting of its money. Right now, I'm on hold (once again) for at least 20 minutes so far - as I await someone to talk to about why this transaction has not taken place.

I’m very disappointed in this company. I been insured with them since 2019. I called to change my bank account information. I was told my daughter policy was under my account. When I asked about my daughter account. They didn’t have a social by her name just 0’s. My question is who policy have I been paying. Then Lord forbid something happened to her. She wouldn’t have had any insurance. They corrected her social and now since she is under my account with her own policy. They have my social down wrong. I am having to fax a form so they can prove it’s me but my social is correct on my account. VERY DISAPPOINTED!!

I am surrendering a whole life policy with cash value after 40 years of paying in. I requested the forms to fill out 45 days ago. Got the form 10 days latter in the mail and filled it out and followed up 7 days latter. So now we are past mid April and I was told to send it to an email address for quicker processing. Never got that info on my first request. I followed up on April 29th and was told the got the email and it was processing. Called today 5/12 and after an hour still did not have a date for the money to be deposited to my account. Find someone else to do business with. These guys have so much red tape they are not worth it. Imagine the confidence I have that my estate would have a different experience if I was deceased. These people have awful customer service and their customer service people cannot give you information. Just awful.

I am a 100% disabled combat veteran, and retirement benefits post on the 1st of each and every month. I set up for premium with National Life to be paid monthly on the 2nd. Now, for 2 yrs each and every month the funds are not debited from my account with a 2 to 4 days period. I repeatedly repeatedly told my agent to correct this, but the same thing each and every month. I just requested a charge of agent form, because this agent is totally incompetent. I can't find a agent name to put on the charge of agent form, which is absolutely ridiculous. The National Life agent is send me their name. I will put it on the charge of agent form, and will be done with this agent. I just ask you fix and correct pay issue. Michael

NGL has a life insurance policy called "Income Builder" but it only builds income for NGL. Another words, the company fails to inform the public that this policy has a “Cash Surrender" clause that costs in the THOUSANDS to stop payment & surrender the policy. Who would knowingly in their right mind agree, accept, sign, and pay for a life insurance policy that costs in the thousands to terminate at a later date? No one. The very day that my policy was issued, it would have cost me over $13,000 to stop premium payments & surrender the policy. The cash surrender clause is difficult to locate & exactly at what point & where it's located remains a mystery. The clause is not included because a person is hard to insure. Quite the opposite, I had two policies in place when the agent was in hot pursuit of my business with over a combined total of $850,000 life insurance. The agent's relentless, aggressive nature in selling me a policy, filling out my forms, telling me to hurry, mail a check, should have been a huge warning for me to keep avoiding the relentless phone calls, emails, and letters. I hope this serves as a 'WARNING' to anyone reading this who may be leaning towards doing business with this company.

I have been with National Life for over a year, lost my job recently; so I pulled my annuity from the company.. I had got a loan just previous to that.. however I had enough money to pay the loan and still pull out a hefty amount, anyways I spoke with an agent just before closing the account and she stepped me through the process.. during this she noticed something didn’t really tell me, but assure me that she put notes into my account to be able to get my money, I call into speak with an agent about what’s going on with my account and if I could get a statement of what’s going on with my account and she told me I had to go to the attorney generals office to get a statement of what happened to my account.. has anyone ever heard this before?? I do have the emails sent back and forth about this..

If it's possible to give negative star, I already gave them negative 1000 stars. This company is under National Life Group which has multiple subsidiaries (National Life Group; National Life Holding Company; NLV Financial Corporation; National Life Insurance Company; Life Insurance Company of the Southwest). All these companies are ready to rip you off at anytime when your love (wife; husband; parents) pass away. My father was passed away in 2016 with liver disease, but these companies come up with another person's medical record (different first/last name, different birth date, different age) regarding cancer and denied life insurance benefit. These companies still haven't paid benefit for more than 2 years. Also these companies have been sued by consumers regarding BAD Faith for more than 150 times for past 11 years. I individually sued these companies in 2017 and still ongoing (X:XX-XX-XXXXX-XXX-XXX and related case X:XX-XX-XXXXX-XXX-XXX). I sued these companies in State Court, but these companies removed my case to Federal to give me more financial burden. However, I will keep continuing for justice of our society. Denying life insurance policies are their main strategy to maximize their profits. "National Life" and its subsidiaries are the worst companies of the United States.

Buyer beware. Be sure to read everything, double check everything. I used to be a smoker, but I wanted a life insurance policy. So I bought a 10 year smoker. I had to be smoke free for a year. Once the year was up, I told my agent I wanted to change my 10 year smoker into a 20 year non smoker. I filled out all the paperwork and I was approved. Turns out he only gave me a 10 year smoker. I've even reached out to the agent and basically all I got was an "oops" and "well, you signed it".

Their customer service is crap. It took me 1 month to process my policy loan and their turnaround time is 3-5 business days. I did not get a clear explanation why.

I cancelled the application. I did not sign their final contract that should have never even been sent. They withdrew $200 from my account anyway!!!! It has not been refunded. Criminal

Invested in a 403b retirement through this company. Over a 3 year period, I earned $16.50 on $17,600. That is not a misprint. This is absolutely the worst investment company I have ever seen. If I had the option to give zero stars, that would have been my pick.

As Policy Holders, they do not value the importance of Customer Service. I did a withdrawal on my policy successfully, however they stated it was complete and funds would be available in 3-5 business days as stated on their own written policy. Called 4 times on follow-up and all the agents would say is that they would put in a rush order. I'm going on into the 3rd week and still no deposit. At this point , a roll over would be a better option. This is my 1st and last experience with this Company.

Unfortunatly my experience with national life has been a bad one. I am a teacher and in my 20's I was approached by a National Life representative to invest in a 403b. I asked many questions to which I did not get many answers. I reluctantly invested and now almost 10 years later I want to move my money out of National Life. I can not get ahold of whoever is now my agent and when I did contact someone to transfer my funds it is now taking over 30 business days to do so. Please do not do any business with this company.

I am completely frustrated with this company!!! I have spent hours over multiple days trying to contact this company as well as my "missing in action" agent about my account! They DO NOT answer messages sent over their "Solutions" page, and thus far, they NEVER answer their phones! Do I have to hire an attorney to get information on my account? If I could give them "0" stars, that would be my selection.

Besides the fact they have extensive hidden fees, when I attempted to transfer my money to a more prudent account, I could not get ahold of my agent. I called and emailed him for weeks with no response. Emailed the customer service line, no response. Currently have been on hold for 15 minutes and unsure if I will ever speak with someone. Is this even a real company?

If you want to sit on hold forever and listen to the same piano song because nobody answers the phone and there is no other contact to customer service, then this is the company for you. All I am trying to do is make a payment and it is this complicated, I can't even imagine how hard it would be if I actually needed something for my policy. I would like to thank national life group for wasting my time though, 3 days of sitting on hold and nobody answering is not acceptable, I will gladly take my business elsewhere

Customer service is good and convenient with call back option. They helped me with my request pretty quickly. Good experience.

I contributed over $25,000 to this organization back in the early 2000s. Now that I want to roll it over so that my money is consolidated the for retirement, they are not allowing me to do so. You can never reach a human by phone. You can’t access their website unless you’re currently contributing. I would warn anybody considering investing with this company to do their research, I am so frustrated I’m ready to take my problem to the next level.

Have been trying to rollover an annuity to another company for the past three months. I have twice mailed in the required forms, but nothing has happened. On hold forever many times without speaking to anyone. I did receive a letter stating that I "might" be interested in transferring my policy to another company. Now I cannot access my account on their website. FRUSTRATING!

Beware, representatives from this company will make false promises and then ignore you when you call them to fulfill those promises. Furthermore, it seems that after they sign you up they are next to impossible to get a hold of. When you finally do get a hold of them, they give you the run around. Every time. I will be moving my 403b from them to literally anyone else at this point.
