While the company started as a small family business in the 1930s, CenturyLink has eventually become a household name in the ISP industry.

CenturyLink has a history of acquiring other companies to increase its nationwide reach. These expansion efforts led CenturyLink to become the third largest telecommunications company in the United States. It serves all 50 states with its extensive fiber-optic internet networks and DSL service.

CenturyLink offers Price for Life plans that don't have a contract and boast download speeds as high as 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps). Customers can choose plans that have a data cap of 300 GB or plans with unlimited data.

Recently, CenturyLink has expanded even further to offer entertainment like Century Prism and DirecTV service. If you're interested in purchasing phone or TV service in addition to internet, you can bundle services to save money.

CenturyLink strives for great customer service to help each of its customers have a unique, positive experience.

The Good

  • Fast Speed Available
  • Contract-Free Price for Life Plans
  • No Overage Charges
  • 24/7 Technical Support

Fast Speed Available

CenturyLink offers a wide range of internet speeds for its customers. These speeds are specific to an exact location and vary depending on the area, but they are typically among the higher speeds in the industry. In some areas, customers can have a download speed of up to 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps) in major cities with fiber-optic availability. This top possible speed is one of the fastest internet speeds available on the market, especially compared to the available speeds from other broadband providers.

Upload speeds range between 256 kbps and 5 Mbps. If you need a high-speed internet connection, check with CenturyLink customer service to see what is available in your zip code.

Contract-Free Price for Life Plans

Like most ISPs, CenturyLink offers packages based on speed. You can determine what works for you based on the devices you'll use and the number of people in your household.

If you sign up for internet service online, CenturyLink offers four plans that don't require a contract in most states. The rates for these plans won't rise if you keep the plan without making any changes (like an address change):

  • 20–140 Mbps — $50 per month
  • Fiber Internet 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps) — $55 per month

You probably won’t need a contract, because CenturyLink can typically offer its packages on a month-to-month basis. You don't need to worry about pricing increases, an early termination fee, or rate changes.

CenturyLink provides reliable internet for a home Wi-Fi network. The company also offers good internet security and backup services with its internet packages through Norton by Symantec.

Making payments each month for internet is easy to do through an online CenturyLink user account.

No Overage Charges

You may have to watch out for CenturyLink's data caps; it's something that a few CenturyLink customers complain about.

CenturyLink sets limits for how much of the internet its customers can use in any given month, which is 1 TB. This is a generous amount of data, so most customers won't surpass it. Internet service providers do this to try to control the available speeds for all of their customers and make sure the system functions properly, but it can be a drawback if you use up a lot of data.

CenturyLink customers who exceed their data limits will not be required to pay an overage charge. If you eat up too much data, you'll receive a notice. CenturyLink might slow your service down.

24/7 Technical Support

The company offers 24/7 technical support, which is very convenient. If a customer is not satisfied with the services they receive from CenturyLink, they are protected with a thirty-day, money-back guarantee.

Be aware that some customers complain of poor customer support. Reviewers note that phone communication with CenturyLink takes a long time, and technician visits are sometimes missed and rescheduled. This is a frequent complaint in the ISP industry. Test out your commununication with a customer service rep through your preferred method of contact to get an idea of the average wait time and quality of response.

The Bad

  • Variable Speed Availability
  • Variable Price for Life Availability
  • Additional Fees
  • Customer Complaints

Variable Speed Availability

Not all of CenturyLink’s plan options and speeds may be available in your area. Fiber is typically available in select urban locations.

It is easy to view plans that are available in your area on CenturyLink’s website. Rural areas are more likely to have access to DSL service and slower speeds.

Variable Price for Life Availability

The CenturyLink Price for Life guarantee isn't available in all 50 states. Check to see if CenturyLink allows a package with a Price for Life guarantee in your area.

Additional Fees

CenturyLink charges additional fees for the following:

  • Modem rental — $10 per month or ~$150 one-time purchase
  • Installation — $125

The modem one-time purchase cost varies but is no higher than $150. Be sure to ask what the cost would be to you if you purchased it one-time versus paying an extra $10 monthly rental fee.

Some areas may have an option for self-installation, which is free.

If your plan with CenturyLink is based on a contract agreement, then you may be subject to an early termination fee if you end the contract early.

Customer Complaints

Customers complain about a variety of issues with CenturyLink, including poor customer service, connection issues, and connection speeds lower than their advertised plans. Be aware that most internet providers have similar complaints.

gavel

The Bottom Line

In recent years, CenturyLink has become one of the biggest broadband ISPs in the country. Its broadband internet service is available in all 50 states. But be warned: each specific address has different high-speed availability.

One perk of CenturyLink is that the service is month-to-month without a contract. This gives customers more flexibility.

Before signing up for CenturyLink, be sure to pay attention to additional fees — setup and equipment — and the offerings available in your area. As with any internet service provider, read the terms and conditions before signing up for service.

Overall, CenturyLink provides quality service with affordable prices. Potential customers should consider CenturyLink when choosing an internet provider.

I have been trying to move my service over to my new residence for weeks with no success. When I do call all, they want to do is upsell me other services without helping me with what I called for. I finally had to escalate my call to a supervisor which was supposed to call me and never did. So, I called back. I was finally able to get some satisfaction after weeks of phone calls. When they did tell me that the account was getting transferred over, they wanted to charge me a one-time installation for $149.00. I told them, why would I pay you for an installation fee when all I have to do is plug it into and existing phone line. Then they told me OK we can charge you at one-time $15.00 installation fee. Now I am HOT! They must be crazy. I wonder how many people they are ripping off with these non-sense charges.? Then they want to sell you Dish services. Kick Rocks!!!

After waiting a total of five hours over a span of two weeks, I finally was able to listen to a representative. I could not understand the verbal communication and was very diplomatic about that issue. I was advised a dispatch was needed and would be available July 1, 2022. Took a day off work, no one ever showed up. Make another two hour call a was advised there was no dispatch according to their records. I have been without internet since May 22,2022, have received a new modem, mailed the old one back in a timely manner. I was advised of a new work order on 7-21-22. During the total of six hours all I heard was a recording stating how great Centurylink is. I beg to differ. From 5-22-22 to July 21, 2022 is not acceptable in the business/ residential world of internet. On the positive side they did credit me the time without internet. I don’t believe they want any human interaction, just their monthly payment

we have been with century link for well over 20 years. In the last few months, their service has been terrible. I have been leasing their modem and have had the same one for at least 12 years. When I asked for anew one, they acted like I was asking for the Hope diamond or Willy Wonka golden ticket. After a good hour of passing from one department to another, they finally agreed to send me a new modem. Much to my disappointment, they sent me a refurbished modem. I connected it and set up all my wireless devices, only to find it disconnects multiple times each hour. I have already made contact with a new carrier and plan to switch next week.

The actual internet product is fine. Not great, not bad-fine. Customer service could use an overhaul though. My internet went out. I called and the automated service line noted an outage in my area. Working from home I wanted more information so I tried their customer service line 5 times. The automated system held me hostage and would not put me through to a customer service rep even after I jumped through all the hoops. Very frustrating. So I called their corporate office in Monroe, LA. The operator put me through to the customer service. I thought, great, now I will get the help I am looking for. I was waiting 51 minutes before getting frustrated and discouraged. I ended that call of waiting. Finally, I used someone else’s computer to go online and chat with a rep. I was passed to 3 people. The last rep simply provided the same info I was able to retrieve on the auto system phone line. Total time involved? 95 minutes. It was one of the most, if not THE most frustrating customer service experiences I have ever had. I would say they have a very involved customer service platform, but not an efficient or effective customer service platform. I hope they at least follow through and give me credit for the days missed with no internet service. Very sad and frustrating. Just because someone is friendly does not mean they are helpful or effective. And the widespread reliance on automated systems in general has, in my opinion, reduced the level of customer service for many companies. High tech does not automatically equal good customer service

The service we had was OK. It went down no more than any other service but didn't always deliver the speeds we paid for. The real problem was disconnection. We were on auto pay and when we closed the account, they didn't use the autopay for the final bill - which was nothing but a "DISCONNECTION FEE". $16 plus tax. They didn't change our address to the new one we gave. So for months they kept charging us late fees for a bill we never should have had and never knew we had and then wanted $69.32 when we finally had the new resident send us the bill. They wouldn't work with removing all the fees so wanted us to pay multiple times the amount originally due despite not using the payment method had set up, not updating the address to assure we got our bill. They said I could have logged in to see the bill. But why would I log in to see a bill that shouldn't exist? It is a SCAM.

I have not had CenturyLink for several years now but when I did use them for internet and phone service they made promises that they never intended to keep and when I called them on it they told me it was a mix up. They would promise a deal that would give me ten dollars off my monthly service while increasing my speed but every month I would have to call them to either turn the speed back on or take off the ten dollars. Every month they would increase my bill by ten dollars and decrease my speed, every month.

We used to have Century Link as our internet provider before our recent move out of state. With Century Link we had problems with our internet every few months. Their customer service is pretty good to help get your computer back online but sometimes it took up to an hour of troubleshooting. We now use another provider and so far have never had an interruption in our service. Because of this, I do not recommend Century Link.

Everytime there is a power outage. CenturyLink loses remote access connection to your ip address. Now, field team can remotely fix this in seconds. And since CenturyLink doesn't teach their regular chat/phone employees how to understand this problem and how easy the solution is. They don't understand & send you a tech to your home, each time. A waste of your time, A waste of the Tech's time as well. Because when the tech arrives, he has to also contact CenturyLink and wait for field team to remotely connect. It's 2019. WiFi isn't new. This should not be a repeated problem, every other month.

You get about 80% of the speed you pay for (which is not bad...), My Century Link reliability is Great, it is fully functional better than 99% of the time. The BIG problem is that Century Link is a VARY Greedy company, they make you Re Negotiate the cost of your service every year OR they switch you to "price for life". This year my wife called to re negotiate and switched us to "price for life" this resulted in a 2.5 X price increase.

Frankly there seem to be no good options for internet service. I have been with these guys for years and have to call back every year to try to keep my internet bill reasonable. I think they are better than comcast though. Just biding my time until google or someone else starts up service in our area. Hopefully they will understand what good customer service and value is.

Choppy support. Immediately after purchasing colo space, they sold the contract to another provider. Very very shady. In addition, they promised us a dedicated internet line at a specific price. Then, they added all sorts of rental fees that pushed it way over after the contract was signed. Once again, very very shady.

I was with Century Link for several years for my internet service. Each year they raised my rates for no reason. Their internet service was slow for the prices I was paying. Their customer service department was unwilling to negotiate my rates, so I left them for Xfinity.

I switched over from a cable provider and was very disappointed. The sales people were a third party that over stated what was offered and once I became a customer, the third party was no where to be found. The internet was definitely slower, so I ended up switching back.

The only thing good about CenturyLink is that their price is low and you get plenty of GBs of data. Otherwise, they are horrible to work with, customer service will tell you one thing, and then when it doesn't happen they say that they can't really do what they said they could do.

The customer service is good, but they make a lot of promises that they can't live up to. The internet is slow and unreliable. Their prices are too expensive for what you get which is often less than half of what you're paying for.

We had a service man come and fix our internet line. He was great and helped to get our internet running a little faster. However, he said that we would never get the fast internet speeds in our area, because CenturyLink will not put the money out to do that. He basically said if we want fast internet then we should get Comcast.

The internet service is decent. We don't get as high of speeds as advertised and they play tricks after your promotional year has expired. So you have to sign up again under a new promotion to keep low prices. However, support is pretty spot on when there are issues.

I had them for a short time and wow did they drop service almost every day. I’m hoping it’s better now since I stopped using them because when I had them tech support was not very good and it would take a while to get a tech out or the would just say it’s an area of high demand and that equals to we over sold the market and it’s causing a speed bottleneck.

CenturyLink is an Internet carrier to use when it is the only option in your area. It is expensive for what they provide. When they are the only game in town, they aren't incented to improve their speeds. It is in and out constantly, and not very reliable. I can't wait until another provider offers service in our area. CenturyLink is in Redfield Arkansas.

Not a fan of CenturyLink. The service is slow and is over priced. Unfortunately, we have few options in our city and we are stuck with their service. Looking forward to when other providers become available and we can switch. Their customer service agents seem to know that we have few options and therefore are indifferent to helping us when we call.

We started off our internet service with CenturyLink. It seemed fine until early in 2016, we began to have problems with the internet dropping when the home phone line rang. We had DSL at the time so this should not have happened. When I called CenturyLink to get help, it was just a bunch of preprogrammed responses, push this button, etc... I never got to talk to a real person! This was extremely frustrating, and I tried more than once, trying different numbers, buttons, etc...So, when a Comcast representative showed up at the door, I was an easy sell.

We had Century link internet a few years ago. I'm not sure if it was the area that we live in or what the issue was but our connection would get lost and we would have to restart our box on a regular basis. The range of our WiFi wasn't very good either and since our connection was in the basement it was hard to get a very strong signal to the upstairs. They came out a couple times to fix it but nothing really changed so we switched providers.

I had Century Link internet for over 15 years. I always only received 3 Mbps for my internet speed. Every time I would call customer service, they somehow made me believe it was on my end. I even purchased a new computer, thinking it was my older computer. I finally had an Engineer from Century Link come to my house. Finally, after all these years, someone was honest with me. He said you will never get better than 3 Mbps in this location. I switched the next day.

Broadband was all that was offered in my area from CenturyLink. The service was consistently not meeting the service levels we were paying for. The price we were paying on a promotion would double/triple after several months prompting us to have to call in to get the latest and greatest deal. After several years of service, you would think a company would reward loyal customers, but alas... they do not. It's very disappointing and frustrating. We cancelled service.
