Affordable Monthly Monitoring

The base monitoring rate is $16.95 per month with no contract. This is the same rate Smith Thompson Security has had since 1978. The provider offers a total of three monitoring plans: wireless monitoring for $16.95 per month, wireless monitoring with smartphone control for $21.95 per month, and full smart home automation with video for $29.95 per month. None of the plans require a contract. Most alarm companies charge more with each device you add, but Smith Thompson does not; each plan has a flat rate.

Professional Installation

Smith Thompson uses licensed and background-checked professional technicians to install its equipment. This gives you the peace of mind that the installation and setup are done properly, which is important when dealing with devices like a motion sensor, thermostats, door locks, garage control, water sensors, security camera, etc. For about the same cost of a DIY installation, Smith Thompson will install all of the equipment for you, which saves the customer time and worry.

Private 24-Hour Professional Monitoring

Smith Thompson owns and operates its own private 24-hour monitoring center based in Plano, Texas. This gives Smith Thompson full quality control and the ability to quickly respond to alarms and notify police in the event of an emergency. The security company's private monitoring center is UL Listed and Certified. That means the company voluntarily opens itself up to yearly audits to ensure the safety of its customers.

A few examples of how this is accomplished would be dual uninterruptable power supplies and diesel generators, fully redundant servers, backup servers, fully redundant telephone networks, independent backup phone system on-site, underground and fully supervised utilities, and disaster recovery plans.

Versatile Monitoring Options

Smith Thompson offers three easy-to-understand monitoring plans. None of the plans require a contract. Plan one is $16.95 per month and offers 24-hour cellular monitoring service of a standard alarm system like the popular DSC or Honeywell.

Plan two is $21.95 per month and offers everything that Plan one does, but it adds smartphone remote arming and disarming control.

Plan three is $29.95 per month and offers full smart home automation from Smith Thompson's mobile app. A few examples of the smart home automation offered is the control panel, video doorbell, indoor and outdoor cameras, smart thermostats, smart locks, smart lights, flood sensors, arming notifications and reminders, garage control, and more.

Transparent Pricing

Smith Thompson keeps the monthly monitoring rate separate from the equipment cost, so you know exactly what you’re paying for. It’s common for alarm companies to hide your equipment cost in a higher monthly rate, as a way to finance it. With Smith Thompson, once the equipment is paid for — whether you pay upfront for a discount or finance it — all you have left is the low monthly rate with no contract.

Flexible Payment Plans with Low-Cost Startup Option

Smith Thompson Security offers flexible payment options. You get a discount if you choose to pay upfront with a one-time payment, or you can pay it over 12 months. You can also spread payments out over 60 months.

Upgrades on Existing System or Installation of New System

A homeowner with an existing security system also have the added benefit of avoiding costly equipment and installation fees that are required by competing home security companies. The lowest costs offered through Smith Thompson are geared toward consumers with an existing security system; however, it does provide equipment options to consumers without an existing system.

Smith Thompson’s standard alarm package and smart home package are the same price; the only difference is the monthly rate. The alarm packages are $499 with a 12-month payment plan, or you get $100 off (making the price $399) if you choose to pay upfront as a one-time payment.

Each package includes the main keypad, wireless door sensors, motion detector, siren, backup battery, and free installation. If you choose the smart home package, the keypad is a touchscreen and has the ability to integrate with smart home Z-Wave devices and cameras.

No Contract

Smith Thompson functions on a month-to-month contract basis. While many security companies require contracts of 36 months, Smith Thompson allows consumers the freedom of a monthly agreement. Consumers can cancel services anytime by providing a written notice 30 days prior to their desired date of canceling services.

Smith Thompson notes it is a performance-based alarm company, and it believes if it treats its customers right, they will stay loyal without a contract.

The Bad

  • One-Year Equipment Warranty

One-Year Equipment Warranty

A warranty on a Smith Thompson security system has the potential to protect consumers from the high costs associated with repairs. Smith Thompson only offers a one-year warranty on products installed by its technician. However, this is somewhat common within the home security industry.
