Customer Review: Eddie Rios from Ogden, Utah

"Having had State Farm as my home insurer has been the best decision of my life - in terms of insurance. They cover all contingencies for a modest premium. They sell peace of mind and they look after your policy to ensure it grows with your family. State Farm agents are as expert as they come. Can't be beat. I've tried to find better, but found that State Farm runs circles around the competition."

As you work with State Farm, be sure to understand how your policy works, what it covers, and what it doesn't to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Competitive Coverage

When you work with State Farm, you'll start by looking at what it would cost to replace your home to determine your coverage level. Getting replacement cost coverage in your insurance policy, will protect your home if the worst were to happen.

Your State Farm policy will also protect keepsakes, hobby equipment, and home and garden features from nature, random acts, and other threats with some exceptions.

The coverage offered by State Farm is competitive with the industry, so you can be confident when considering a policy from the insurer.

Additional Homes Covered

You can also purchase condo, farm or ranch, manufactured home, and renters insurance from State Farm. Whatever home is for you, you can find reliable insurance coverage through State Farm.

The Bad

  • Fewer Discounts Available
  • Clear Limitations
  • Limited Financial Strength Information

Fewer Discounts Available

State Farm offers fewer discounts on insurance premiums compared to some of its competitor homeowners insurance companies. However, it still offers some nice discounts, including a multi-line discount, home alert protection, and roof materials and quality.

You can also opt for a higher deductible for lower rates on your homeowners insurance policy. While it would be nice to have more discount opportunities, State Farm offers some key discounts to help clients save while delivering quality services.

Clear Limitations

Most home insurance policies have limitations. State Farm makes its policy limitations clear on its website. These limitations include money, business property, watercraft, trailers, firearm theft, silverware and goldware theft, computers and data processing equipment, and rug and tapestry theft.

State Farm home insurance also does not offer protection in certain scenarios, including flood, underground water, earthquakes, mudslides, settling, deterioration, contamination, nuclear hazard. If you're home is damaged in any of these situations, you won't be able to make an insurance claim.

While it would be nice to not have any limitations, they are common for the industry and State Farm makes them clear from the initial research stage.

Limited Financial Strength Information

It's difficult to find State Farm's financial strength information online for its homeowners insurance policies. While this is concerning, State Farm does have high financial strength ratings for its auto and life insurance companies.

Financial strength ratings indicate an insurance company's financial stability and likelihood to be able to meet its claims obligations. High financial strength ratings are an important indicator of a good insurer.

To be fully confident when buying home insurance from State Farm, be sure to ask your State Farm agent specifically about its financial strength related to its homeowners insurance.

The Bottom Line

State Farm is a recommended home insurance company because of the praise it has received from reviewers on BestCompany.com.

The insurer also has a strong reputation for dependability and quality developed through many years of industry experience. However, you should ask your insurance agent about its financial strength for home insurance before applying for and buying a policy.

State Farm offers good coverage options for a variety of homes, which makes it easy to have your insurance needs met.

Although you'll find fewer discounts for insurance cost on State Farm homeowners insurance than with some of its competitors, State Farm is a great insurer to choose. You'll be clear on the terms of your policy and what it covers under which circumstances, which will give you peace of mind and clarity.

DO NOT GET STATE FARM! We had State Farm for 6 months before switching over. Each month our bill was a different total and the cost would often fluctuate for no known reason. After talking with friends and family this was the case for all of them as well. The customer service was not good either. Sometimes we would get a helpful agent, but most of the time they gave little help and vague answers. Never could they explain why the bill fluctuated so much. After shopping around, we found that their prices were much higher than nearly every other competitor. They sent a lot of paperwork and it was an unnecessarily complicated process to both get signed up and to cancel service.

I am a licensed insurance agent until I moved to a new state. Yes I am learning the new state laws and policies but not one agent out of 4 so far has honestly treated me fairly or known enough to properly protect my insurance needs. After attempting several times to reach a regional or corporate agent support member I am now switching agencies for the first time since I started driving when I was 16 and will be 50 this year. Shame on State Farm for such subpar standards for its agents and the agents themselves for not knowing the very product they are suppose to be selling to their customers to protect them from perils not from the agents lack of knowledge or making sure the customers have the correct coverage. Make sure you always have replacement cost value insurance coverages and not depreciation. Any agent that sells you a depreciation policy is a criminal and has no interest in your best interest.

I was a loyal claim free customer for at least 15 years. We had to use our towing coverage, only to not need the car towed after all. Several months later my car door was opened and dinged another car causing very little damage to that car. I was going to pay for the damage out of my pocket, but my local agent rep reassured me that our rates would not increase if they paid the damage. She explained that since it was under $3k we would not be penalized & told me not to worry. I was shocked when I received my next statement saying that our rates were increasing quite a bit due to two claims. When I called all they gave were excuses & more lies. I decided I was done with them. I found a company that has way better customer & better rates. Don't bother with State Farm unless you want to overpay for just meh service.

My family lost our house and all personal belongings due to house fire SEVEN weeks ago. Adjuster deemed it a total loss and tried to low ball claim by over 150k less than policy limits. I refused verbal offer and still have not received any indication of amount due seven weeks later. Refusing to pay policy limits and the Increase Dwelling I paid for; it’s 2022 with increase inflation and they are denying this! I have submitted several receipts for Additional Living Expenses (ALE) for food, emergency clothing etc and have not received a penny. We are currently living with my elderly parents so State Farm is taking advantage of the situation by not reimbursing for ALE. My family has went through a traumatic experience due to a tremendous loss and State Farm is just adding to this. No empathy or compassion on their part. I also have to continue to pay home insurance each month until claim is resolved even though my house was a total loss and destroyed by fire. This seems fraudulent to me. Would never recommend this company; they are not a Good Neighbor and definitely not there when my family is in need

Statefarm is great if you do not need them. They continually increase their prices and claim its due to market increases and they do not keep their appointments. I tried to use my homeowners insurance once but the claim was denied. No one was able to fully explain to me why it was denied, so it seems like an unnecessary feature majority of the time.

We used to have State Farm for our home insurance for several years. Are rates kept going up and up every year. When we contacted them to ask why (since we had never had a claim) they kept passing us to different agents. All we were told is it’s because of the economy. I understand that rates do increase somewhat but not almost double in two years.. They have rotten customer service. We did some research and found a much cheaper company

I had State Farm as my home, car, and life insurance . I had a house fire where the house didn't completely burn except the kitchen. However State Farm waited 2 months and then dropped my coverage . I had been warned about State Farm form others but still chose them for my insurance and just as it was said if you have a fire they will definitely drop you you and that was the only claim I ever made with them. So when choosing insurance think twice about using State Farm. Insurance companies want you to pay them coverage but when an accident occur they don't like to pay out.

LIKE A GOOD NEIGHBOR STATE FARM IS THERE, THEY STICK IT TO YOU IT SHOWS HOW THEY CARE.... WHERE IS JAKE FROM STATE FARM WHEN YOU NEED HIM. THE MULTIPLE ISSUES WITH DEALING WITH THE STATE FARM CLAIMS DEPARTMENT AND THE LACK OF RESPONSE IN GETTNG RETURN PHONE CALLS. ADJUSTERS WHO FAIL TO FOLLOW THE DOI REGULATIONS REGARDING WHAT THEY NEED TO PROVIDE TO POLICYHOLDERS AND INSTEAD OF TELLING PEOPLE WHAT IS COVERED, THEY BOMBARD YOU WITH INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT THEY EXCLUDE AND LIMIT IN THE HO POLICY

I personally do not have their coverage however my fiancé does and when a big tree fell over our fence in the back yard and a huge limb from our neighbors tree knocked two holes in our roof I expected State Farm to pay and yet they gave a quote for less than out $2400 deductible. I had received two quotes totally 10k in repairs for fence and roof combined

My insurance rates have increased 2 times (a total of $30 within the past year). No warning, no explanation, just a bill arrives more expensive than the last. I've also been a client for 30 years and have never needed to use them to pay anything.

My parents had a homeowners policy for over 50 years with State Farm in NC and never filed a claim. The first time I filed a claim on the policy after I inherited the house, State Farm cancelled the policy. Thousands of dollars in premiums paid and after one claim, they cancelled the policy. Never again will I use State Farm.

I'd give State Farm 1.5 stars. You get what you pay for. I grew with having AAA insurance in my family so it's like staying at a 5 star hotel and now moving down to a 3 star hotel. The rates are just ok and the customer service not so much. Our agent usually takes multiple days to weeks to get back to us when we do hear back..

The worst home owners insurance that I have ever had. They canceled the policy without notifying me because an issue I file a claim on. The excuse was that my house wasn't worth the deductible. Great.... really?
