Plans for Individuals and Families

Cigna offers three kinds of plan options to individuals and families with different dental insurance benefits:

  • Cigna Dental Preventive
  • Cigna Dental 1000
  • Cigna Dental 1500

The Cigna Dental Preventive plan has no deductible and covers 100 percent of preventive services, like cleanings and exams. Its monthly premium cost varies. However, the average lowest monthly premium available in 2018 is $19 per person.

The Cigna Dental 1000 offers the same preventive care coverage as the Cigna Dental Preventive plan. It also covers restorative treatment up to $1000 per year. The deductible is $50 for an individual and $150 dollars for a family. The average lowest monthly premium available in 2018 is $30 per person.

The Cigna Dental 1500 plan has the same deductibles and preventive coverage as the Cigna Dental 1000. It offers more coverage for restorative care, up to $1500 per year. The Cigna Dental 1500 includes $1000 benefit for orthodontic services that comes with a separate deductible, limits, and coinsurance. The average lowest monthly premium available in 2018 for this plan is $35 person.

When choosing a plan from these three categories, pay attention to waiting periods. Waiting periods mean that the dental insurance company doesn't cost-share covered services until the waiting period is over.

Plans for Employers

Cigna offers four kinds of plans that employers can provide to their employees in a benefits package:

  • Cigna Dental Care (DHMO)
  • Dental Preferred Provider Organization (DPPO)
  • Dental Exclusive Provider Organization (DEPO)
  • Dental Indemnity

The Cigna Dental Care plans are Cigna's dental HMO plans. They allow individuals to see an in-network provider for general dental treatment and require referrals to see any kind of dental specialist. There is no out-of-network coverage, except for emergencies. Some of these plans also cover orthodontic services from an in-network provider.

The Dental Preferred Provider Organization (DPPO) plans allow individuals to see any dentist or specialist in- or out-of-network. There are greater cost savings to seeing a network-participating dentist. After the deductible is met, patients pay coinsurance for dental services under the dental PPO plan.

The Dental Exclusive Preferred Provider Organization (DEPO) plans are very similar to the Dental Preferred Provider Organization plans. The only difference is that the Dental Exclusive Preferred Provider Organization plans do not offer out-of-network coverage.

The Dental Indemnity plans do not require referrals. People with these plans pay co-insurance for the dental treatment they receive.

This insurance company is a joke. I have had tooth problems for years. When I seen my dentist on November 18. I had massive pain. I had 2 root canals done on the same tooth. The last one fell out. That tooth was dead. So I get it pulled. The dentist had a hard time pulling my tooth. Next thing I know is he is telling me my jaw bone cracked and healed itself. So he check to see if it was broken more. Luckily it was not. So from what I understand is that he pushed my jaw bone back in and did a bone graft. Hopefully this heals. Still having problems. And yet Cigna denied the bone graft. Looks like i need a Attorney because this is not healing right.

I called in to confirm that all the procedure codes were covered. They confirmed that all of them were covered. I got the procedures, and then got a bill for over $1000. Turns out, that if you get your tooth pulled and get the hole in your head filled on the same day, they don't cover either. What's the solution, wait until the next day to get the bone graft and possible infection to set in? Absolutely terrible service and when I appealed the claim multiple times, they basically said, "You need to have the dentist submit for preauthorization to ensure everything is covered". THIS IS WHY I CALLED! Despicable and deceitful business practices

total scam. Find reasons not to pay. I cancelled after 10 months. They decide what "codes" to attach to a claim and then say "it is a major code and not covered". Please note you do not get full policy info. Example: They honor a dental crown once every 60 months (that's right one every five years!). Do not trust the nicely worded web site. I found it totally useless and and save the money for their "insurance" in an envelope to pay for things myself and avoid the shock-effect and disappointment. I intentionally waited the six months for root canal re-buildup because it was the then known terms and it was still denied due to their "code" system. So, yes another unexpected dental invoice. Please do not waste your hard earned money. Cigna is simply a gamble.

If I could give cigna dental less than one star I would. Their customer service is the worst you can't call a single time with out getting transferred to different departments. It's like they like to play with the customers. I called about getting id cards for my girls and they wouldn't send me id cards because one of my girls is 7 years old. Apparently I could get them online but I couldn't even access the information online either. I called several times and no one could help. They literally transferred me 6 times and they all asked the same question but no one could help 😡. What's the point of having customer assistance if the people that works in customer service don't want to help. Worst experience ever. I will never responded cigna dental 😤.

Cigna is complete trash insurance. Before I got my orthodontics done I called them to ask if my treatment and place of service was covered. I WAS told yes but that they don't pay the 50% intill my thing was paid in full to then go and summit it to be reimbursed my benefits coverage. So I now paid off the whole thing I call them to see how to now summit my claim for my money back for their part. They tell me it's doesn't qualify now that only metal braces do which makes no sense being that people use Invisalign nowadays more than metal braces and I don't see how that changes the fact that it was used for Orthodontics purposes to straighten teeth. They are a joke and rip off also false advertising for sure. They apparently don't cover anything they just collect your money. I wouldn't tell anybody to use them.

Angry comment: unfortunately, Cigna does not live by its Mission statement (To improve the health and vitality of those we serve) nor by its Vision statement (A better future built on the vitality of every individual and every community) In reality, Cigna just collects money from the customers and their employers but pays ~7% (in my case) I do not recommend Cigna, Cigna's criteria for coverages are ridiculous as well as reasons for denying appeals: two Cigna's analysts reviewed my case and decided that the procedure was not necessary. Apparently Cigna's analysts know better what necessary for my life and what I can live without. Those analysts didn't bother to ask me how many dental sergeants for the past decade refused helping me; didn't bother to notice that form of my bones are not feasible for dentures. The vision statement that saying about every individual just doesn't exist for them - very convenient! I can add couple of more things that they didn't take into consideration, but it would be too much to reveal about my personal health. And I think it is the main reason why this insurance company presents this neglecting behavior: simply because, in order for the customer to highlight Cigna in the public view, the customer would need to reveal way too much personal info than an average person would want to tolerate. Hopefully, my employer would reconsider to continue making business with such dishonest company as Cigna is. Thank you for reading my long comment.

Purchasedd what I thought was a top rated dental insurance plan. Purchased a PPO plan with a $60 plus monthly payment. My Dentist went out of network (unknown to me). I am entitled to two free cleanings per year. The average cost of a dental cleaning is $75 to $125 per cleaning. My Dentist charged CIGNA $72 for the cleaning. CIGNA paid $57. They did not even cover one monthly premium. I do not recommend CIGNA if they will only pay $57 for a cleaning which is well below the lowest average cost for a dental cleaning. Why even get a PPO plan? When I complained they offered nothing, but just said my Dentist is NOW out of network and their policy states that is all they will pay! Very unsatisified.

Absolute worst dental insurance company!!! I am an insurance manager for a dental office and Cigna has become the worst insurance company to deal with. They used to be a great company until all of the provider services have been outsourced to another country. I am regularly lied to and given wrong information because the reps don't know what they are talking about (had one today ask me when we are cementing a patient's partial ??), claims for any major services are automatically pended so they can ask for additional information which is already provided on the claim as a way to delay paying, claims regularly take 90+ days to process for no reason, hold times are frequently excessive, when you ask for a supervisor or provider relations rep because there is an unusual circumstance that is not being resolved they always say the person is in a meeting and can't even call you back, and if they can't answer difficult questions they just hang up on you without calling back (even though they obtain a call back number at the start of the call). I have a claim that is over a year old, which was previously approved, and had confirmation from multiple reps for over 7months that they have absolutely everything needed to process the claim but it is just sitting in limbo. Every time I call I am told it is still processing and to allow 7-10 business days. One time in august a rep even told me it was approved and sent for payment (but couldn't tell me the approved amount, only that payment would be sent within 5 business days)...over 2 months later and it's still "pending" and is not in for payment. I could go on and on with the completely unacceptable service they are providing. Save yourself, your employees, and the healthcare providers the headache and waste of time, choose another carrier.

My company switched to Cigna for dental insurance after many years with another provider. As others have reported, Cigna is the WORST insurance provider I have ever had the misfortune to deal with. My dentist has been trying to get payment on two claims one of them going back over 10 months. They keep asking for documentation that has already been provided multiple times. The last rep said they were forwarding claims to 'same day adjustment team' who said they needed two weeks to process - that's right, SAME DAY adjustment team needs TWO WEEKS! Still haven't heard back. They don't deserve even 1 star but unless I give them one can't post review.

have a Cigna Medicare Advantage PPO plan which includes dental insurance. It is supposed to pay my dental 100% up to $2000. I filed for my reimbursement for my out of network dentist, Cigna would only pay $48 of the $124 I paid to the dentist. First of all, it should not have been discounted at all per my contract. Second, even if it should have been discounted, the discount is 20%, not the 60% they discounted my payment. I filed a complaint with Medicare and a Cigna representative called me (first time ever receiving a call from them) and said it had been corrected and my check was in the mail. When I didn't receive the check, I called and was told they are still working on it. This company is a joke. I can call ten times (which I did) and get a different answer every time. The best solution of all was told to me by a Grievance department supervisor - Suck it up and get a new dentist!! Very professional. Update: they are not paying my claim. Still saying my dentist is in network, even though she’s not. They are sooooooo dishonest.

I have Cigna dental PPO. WORST insurance I have ever had. Unfortunately it is the only one offered through my employer. All they do is deny claims. They will say they need more info from the dentist and have you go back and forth for months and then ultimately deny the claim anyways. This is for basic treatments that are supposed to be covered. I even called before my treatment to make sure it was covered to prevent any problems. And once again they use the same tactic "Need more info or will deny claim". So here I go again through the same process which I know will end up the same with a denied claim. I do not how they continue to get away with this. There should be a class action lawsuit filed! You end up paying more with this company because you pay premiums and they never cover anything! Disgusting!!! If I could give 0 stars I would!

The list of oral surgeons covered by the DMHO plan is pathetic. They have one listed in Elyria and another in Avon but those doctors don't even work out of those offices; they are both further away near Cleveland. Bright Now who is listed as a provider has an oral surgeon but he only does "certain" extractions. Basically if you live west of Cleveland do yourself a favor and find a different insurance company because this one is useless unless you are willing to drive an hour for every appointment because they have no providers for oral surgery whatsoever in Lorain, Erie, Ashland or Huron counties.

I had cigna for a little less than a year. During that time I had no access to the full website, called many times gave the same information more times than I can recall, total of about 2 hrs with customer support spread over those months. As we went over my information and I heard it repeated back to me I decided to cancel my plan because nothing was being resolved; Only then, when I gave my information to cancel did they magically find the problem which was a zip code error that they fixed right before cancelation. As far as payments and coverage, I received a deep cleaning, a filling and the basic check up. I believe cigna covered maybe 15% I paid more for the insurance than they paid for any work I had done. Ridiculous

Im writing in my behalf use im trying to get my reimbursement since augustt 17...my day of swrvice at doctorphilios modern dentistry was on may 27 2022 ...after a coupl of weeks i unortunaly did find out they overcharge me in that clinic.they are dragging me all the way here to not pay me themoney tgey took from me! You guys from cigna are also not capable to make them pay me back.we go there and have you and put our trust loyalty and money in your hand and we hope youhave our back.but its not the case there in cigna...yes i hace been calling you guys almost everyday and the ibly thing you do is giving to moberndentistry at doctor philips time time and time not doing orgiving them any actionsfor what they have been doing agaisnt my persona and my wallet and my time...because of your imconpetence my life has became a nightmare evrytime i have to call you expecting to have some good news thats all the time frame you gave to this peoole: Dec 29 after the 60 days period from august 17 til oct 7 and october 7 to november 7 and from novenber 7 til novenber 29 and from november 29 til december 29 nothing has ever been done to pay me back what this disonest clinic has been taking from me.. $866 dollars..i paid this lying thieves $3272 dollars and tge bill was $2406 acoording to my plan.the lat ca i made there was with reference number 6135.letters appeals complains ans bow tgey tell you guys wont taje your call anymore...what about paying me back? Are you going to send me the payment ? They are saying they send tge check to you at october 29...do you have the check? If you can find the check when will you find??????should i be waiting sitting here another month? Should i be waiting here and accepting tge crao they give to me for another month? I am an Insurance Coordinator for an oral surgery practice and unfortunately, I am forced to work with Cigna on a daily basis. Cigna is by far the most subpar, incompetent, and unsatisfactory insurance company I have ever worked with. They make more mistakes than any other company. They take longer processing claims than any other company. They constantly ask for information we have already provided. It’s as though they avoid paying claims anyway they can. I regularly spend hours on the phone trying to get them to correctly pay claims. I would recommend NOT HAVING INSURANCE over selecting Cigna as your insurance company.

HABITUAL, INCOMPREHENSIBLE, DERELICTION OF CLAIMS PROCESSING. Cigna Dental is derelict in their fiduciary responsibility to properly process dental claims. Your administrative effort will become exhausted from repeatedly re-sending complete, diagnostic quality images, narratives and reports. This will result in them asking again for the same information that is attached and clearly listed on the claim form. Cigna habitually abuses their members by intentionally holding on to premium payments and not paying ALLOWABLE BENEFITS. I urge you to look elsewhere, Cigna is is a waste of your time, effort and money.

This insurance is no good, you will pay far more in than you ever get back. And try cancelling the policy, 48 minutes 25 seconds on the phone being transferred three times. I don't like to have to write bad reviews. Here is my take: When they sell, they don't tell of a waiting period, as many others have said. When they sell, I was told two teeth cleanings a year are 0% out of my pocket. I don't have dental problems, but knew all costs were increasing so, I picked up this policy two years ago. This year alone, I have paid $396 in premiums, I went for two teeth cleanings, my balance due was still $293, and the great insurance paid $145. This is not good financing. They paid $48 for a teeth cleaning? Where in the world can you get a teeth cleaning for $48. Either be honest about what it pays or don't sell it. Very misleading and downright disgraceful. Don't buy this junk.

Cigna works ok for the regular stuff, but if you end up having to do anything other than a cleaning, good luck. Even for procedures they say are covered, they find a way to deny a claim. Their procedure (in part because of my employer potentially, requires that) is that a claim for wisdom teeth (a procedure they cover) must be denied as a medical claim first before they review it. Now they have denied the claim because they are saying my dentist is out of network for this procedure, but never said it was out of network before. When I contacted Cigna they tell me it is denied because it is a cosmetic procedure. So now I am stuck paying for a procedure my insurance covers, yet doesn't cover.

My evaluation is the Plan Detail statements on the official Signa website, for Sigma Preferred Medicare (HMO) are deceptive, at least related to dental and vision coverage. "Dental Care...Preventive Services: No max plan coverage amount Comprehensive Services: $3,000 every year". Signa accepts only 1 of hundreds of dentists in our area, even excluding our previous dentist in the same network. Basic x-rays were approved and covered but a deep cleaning was recommended as a preventative measure. Details "Preventive Dental Services› Prophylaxis/cleaning (one every six months) $0 copay. Neither the dental office or Sigma bothered to clarify, until I was scheduled and in the office with a $100 charge if I cancelled, that this cleaning, even while qualified for 100% coverage by the plan, still had a $55 co-pay per quadrant ($220 patient pay). I fear what other hidden costs there likely are if I needed any more significant treatments. For vision wear, we are restricted to only approved vision dispensaries where we found prices for very standard glasses to be more than $200 higher than I have paid at even the same chain in the past. If I used the $200 Sigma limit for eyewear my cost with insurance would still be higher than simply using a sale price without insurance. I ended up purchasing 2 pair of glasses at a big box store for over $200 LESS than just 1 pair quoted by the in-plan chain. Frames were comparable, same lens coatings. The chain claimed they used "newer technology" but the "old" technology works fine for me, IF there is a difference. Beware of misleading and selective information!

Last year I had paid an additional premium for the dental insurance through my employer that was contracted to cover orthodontics $1500 (life time maximum) for my son. Early spring 2018 my son got that procedure done. Now March 2019 I just received a bill from my son's orthodontist to pay $289.41 because Cigna won't pay any more to complete that $1500 as contracted to cover for my son's 2018. I called Cigna and found out that Cigna stretched out quarterly payments to my son's orthodontist and canceled the last payment that was falling in this year Spring 2019 even though my son's orthodontic invisalign procedure already done last spring 2018 and told me because I terminated the dental insurance. However, this year 2019 I am still with the same Cigna Dental Insurance through my same employer but I changed to a premium only cover $1000 life time maximum for orthodontics since my family/kids do not need orthodontics right now. Plus, I was already done my part paid the difference for my son's orthodontic procedure last year and I paid the whole year for that premium dental insurance to cover $1500 as contracted. Finally I believe this misleading advertise and wrongful operative business by Cigna. All my coworkers and myself don't like Cigna Dental even my dentist and and it's very hard to find good dentists that accept Cigna Dental. We have tried to convince the employer/HR to change the dental insurance .

DON'T sign up for Cigna Dental Insurance. I'm just now receiving multiple bills from dentist offices who thought Cigna was going to cover a certain amount on procedures I had done a year ago and now I'm on the hook for over $600. One of them almost went to collections because I moved and so much time had passed that my mail forwarding had expired so I wasn't receiving statements in the mail. Cigna reached out to me once and when I explained the situation it's basically been radio silence. So if your dentist office recommends Cigna Insurance, tell them no thank you and maybe warn them that they may end up trying to collect for months as mine did.

When my daughter was born Cigna negotiated a few prices but covered nothing. Then when my husband went to get a filling through their dental coverage we were told they only cover fillings in the front teeth. Who needs fillings in the front teeth! So we asked for the bigger plan that covers fillings, they said we would be good to go come June. So in June we finished a root canal for my husband and guess what, we get a bill for 400$ so i called Cigna, apparently our new plan is not effective until next year! However, we are paying the premium for it now! Do yourself a favor and don't let Cigna steal your money.

I paid more than $4300 at Affordable dentures who does not deal with insurance companies to keep the cost low. Cigna allows dental claims but will not pay them because it's out of network. Bait and switch Beware you pay them and then you pay the dentist. What's the point on paying for dental insurance that doesn't cover you? What a joke. Do NOT TRUST THIS INSURANCE COMPANY

This company is a total scam! They will not cover anything! They even won't cover cleaning in full even if they state they cover teeth cleaning twice a year. Had it done once and they covered half of it! They also cover only silver fillings which nobody is using like last 50 years. So they won't cover fillings. I wonder if they cover wooden crowns only.... Such a SCAM! Waste of money!

So very disappointed with Cigna dental. If you’re considering Cigna be cautious because they are sneaky. Their own preferred dental provider had no idea. Needed a crown replaced and the base had to be repaired. Over 2 hrs but Cigna claiming an exclusion for the required repair on obscure page (think p 17). Impossible to replace crown without repair. Of course speaking to CS in Philippines with communication struggles. Already looking for 2024 options and Cigna isn’t one.

By far the worst insurance ever. I don’t know if it’s the negotiated price with my job but it’s bad. No one accepts them because they never pay or little to nothing. I went somewhere and the office said Cigna would pay 10 DOLLARS even though I have NO DOCTOR in my network. It’s so depressing the amount of money I’ve had to come out of pocket while being stuck with them😡

One of the worst company to get Dental insurance. They deny your claim on one pretext or other. They have so many hidden costs that the insurance looks a steal deal but when you visit a dentist, you realize that its you from whom the company has stolen. First they deny your claim, then appeal are invariably rejected and there in no further customer satisfaction mechanism. Avoid it, if you can.

I bought a Cigna advantage Dental plan that offered 100% no deductible coverage for preventive and diagnostic treatment inside or outside network. When I got treated, I was billed for 70% of the bill. Turns out, what Cigna covers is 100% of their “Maximum Allowable Coverage” (MAC) which is only a third of the cost. You are liable for the balance. This is some VERY deceptive wording they use to scam the unwary customer. This company is a predatory, scam , ripoff that preys on Veterans and Seniors!!! Do not but a policy!!! You will be disappointed!!!

Cigna dental sent checks that i never received. Asked them to stop payment and send out more. Its been TWO YEARS; this went unoticed by my ortho now for the past 4 months me and the orrho have been calling. They LIE say they are going to process and have it sent. Ive talked to 5 different chicks 2 different managers...jana a. veronica j. john d. to name a few...NOT ONE have kept their promise and i havent heard back from one. This company is a FRAUD.

Cigna Dental has changed rules without proving those changes to the providers, when asked they are not giving a straight answer and are giving the run-around. I called last week and called again today and was not given a straight answer the agents don't say a word and they just hang up on you.

Dishonest lousy company. Stay away at all costs. They do not honor their policies. Worst customer service I have ever experienced. I have two plans but they will o my honor one, so I waste money all year.

dental: does not cover very many procedures. There is simply no chance to appeal. If it weren’t for the employer who entered into an agreement with them, I would not have spent a single cent on this insurance.

My daughter had her wisdom teeth pulled - Doctor confirmed coverage but Cigna Dental denied it saying it was a medical claim, Cigna medical denied it saying it was a dental claim, does anybody do their job?

VERY BAD EXPERIENCE. They are not covering the benefits that the dental office claim the insurance will going to cover 100%. always downgrading my coverage w/o any notice or information.

Cigna doesn't cover anything. They apparently think that their clients just love taking test and don't believe any of the tests and procedures are actually necessary. They've been so awful and we've paid out of pocket in full for every single thing. I don't understand what the half a thousand dollars a month was even for.
