The Good

  • Plan Variety
  • Additional Features
  • Plans Available through Car Dealers

Plan Variety

Extended warranties offer protection after a car's original warranty or manufacturer's warranty expires. This protection reduces the amount car owners pay in out-of-pocket expenses for covered repair costs. CNA National offers three car warranties for new or slightly used cars and two for used cars.

The extended auto warranty offerings for new or slightly used cars include

  • Automotive Preferred Care℠
  • Mechanical Advantage Care℠
  • Vehicle Value Care℠

These protection plans offer powertrain coverage — engine, transmission, and drive train assembly.

The Automotive Preferred Care℠ vehicle service contract offers the most comprehensive coverage available in an extended warranty: exclusionary coverage. An exclusionary warranty covers all of the parts except those stated in the contract.

The Mechanical Advantage Care℠ plan covers everything the Vehicle Value Care℠ plan does and includes coverage for the car’s interior and powertrain electronics, ABS brakes, accessories, and vehicle hardware.

The Vehicle Value Care℠ plans cover the heating and air conditioning, fuel, electrical, and cooling systems, brakes, suspension, and front wheel steering.

CNA National’s extended car warranty offerings for used cars include

  • Powertrain Advantage Care℠
  • Certified+Plus Care℠

These plans offer for the powertrain warranty coverage. The Certified+Plus Care℠ plan includes two options: Preferred and Advantage.

The specific differences between the two Certified+Plus Care℠ auto warranty plans is unclear; however, these are only offered for cars that have been certified by a dealer and whose factory warranty coverage has been extended.

Additional Features

CNA National vehicle service contracts include the following:

  • 24/7 roadside assistance
  • Trip interruption reimbursement
  • Car rental reimbursement
  • Towing

Trip interruption coverage and car rental reimbursement are only available when the car is in a repair facility for a covered repair. A refund is only available for covered repairs.

Some warranty providers also allow clients to choose a repair shop. It's unclear whether CNA National offers this benefit to its clients.

However, the additional benefits that CNA National does offer, add value to its vehicle protection plans. While these features are common among providers, some auto warranty companies do not offer all of these additional features.

Plans Available through Car Dealers

In addition to offering car warranties to independent buyers, CNA National offers these extended warranties through dealers:

  • Lifetime Limited Powertrain Warranty℠
  • Lifetime Wrap Service Contract℠

The Lifetime Limited Powertrain Warranty℠ covers the car’s powertrain. This warranty does not include the additional features, like 24/7 roadside assistance.

The Lifetime Wrap Service Contract offers additional coverage, including brakes, fuel system, interior electronics, and more. This plan includes the additional features listed above.

These certified warranties are only available for quality vehicles that pass inspections.

The Bad

  • Some Restrictions

Some Restrictions

The restrictions vary depending on the product purchased. CNA National vehicle protection plans cannot be renewed unless they include a rider called a future contract guarantee.

For the warranty to be transferable, it must include a transfer guarantee.

If potential clients are interested in these features, they can add them to their vehicle protection agreement before purchasing.

The Bottom Line

An extended service contract from CNA National is a good option for car owners who want to buy an extended warranty. While CNA National’s warranties are not always transferable or renewable, these features can be negotiated before signing the contract.

CNA National has a nice selection of vehicle protection plans, which makes it easier for potential clients to find the warranty coverage they want at a good price. Warranty cost is determined by several factors, including the car's make, model, and mileage. Many vehicle service contract companies do not publish general cost estimates due to the variability. For more detailed extended car warranty cost information, people interested in a CNA extended warranty should contact the company directly.

For its warranties offered through dealerships, cars must be high quality and pass an inspection before a CNA National warranty can be provided. This feature helps car shoppers identify good used cars and make a smart car purchase.

Before getting an extended warranty, it's worth thoroughly reviewing the contract and terms. Most warranties do not cover damage from normal wear and tear, damage from failure to properly care for the vehicle, and damage from accidents.

Joke of a warranty. paid 1200 bucks for this warranty and found out that I live nowhere near a wheel repair shop and I'm a mechanic that restores old cars. was told by dealership when we purchased this they would come to us. wife got a wheel damaged now going through a hassle to get it fixed when we live over 4 hrs to the closest repair and would have to take it there atleast twice once for the insurance claim to be okayed and the other for repair. avoid at all cost. Can after talking to them several times and every associate I’ve talked to is rude told me to contact allied wheel company. I did and there isn’t one near me so I’d have to ship my wheel to them. So wife would be without a car for days to weeks. They will cover 3 days at 50 bucks for a rental. I’ve had it with companies ripping us off and not listening to anything a customer says

Our claims management team reviewed your claim to ensure it was handled correctly. There were three components that were at issue. Two of the components were non-covered parts per the terms and conditions of our contract with you. The third item (transmission cooler lines) was covered per our contract and payment was authorized for the cooler lines. We have abided by our contract; however, if you would like to discuss this in more detail, please call us at 800-345-0191 and ask to speak with a claims manager.

Paid for a full bumper to bumper warranty, including the additional preferred cost which is the very top of the line insurance. I paid $2,500 for this policy for 4 years. They did not cover one single thing in those four years. I bought a Chevy Volt and wanted to have the coverage just to be on the safe side and I had very few problems but they wouldn't cover one single problem. One turned out to be part of the powertrain which they had given me a lifetime warranty but they said they didn't cover it. I found out later on that the issue was part of the powertrain and they didn't know that, I paid for it but GMC reimbursed me since CNA wouldn't cover it. the second issue was a software issue which they said they wouldn't cover because they didn't have the correct code for it. It was an absolute joke, GMC was just besides themselves with these guys. Not one thing was ever covered by them, including 2 other issues, I will never use these guys again, biggest waste of $2500 I've ever done, what a joke

First let me say that there are a lot of companies out there that provide a quality service for a reasonable price. To be clear, CNA is not one of them! CNA sells itself as a honest organization that provides full-scale coverage (warranty) for mechanical issues with your car. Of course, typical items fall outside their coverage (wiper blades, tires, etc.). These are normal wear and tear type items. Furthermore, the contract itemizes tubes and hoses that may cause more significant issues if left unattended. Notwithstanding any of the above, it does not call out pipes or in my particular case, a water pipe (aka - Engine Coolant Outlet Flange). The pipe broke and the engine overheated in minutes (<5 mins) causing severe damage. Severe, in this scenario, is approximately $15,000. The independent assessor came out to look at the car and it was deemed a "no fault" incident and sent to headquarters for further review. CNA is arguing that as a result of the water outlet flange breaking they are not responsible for the repairs. They're arguing the pipe is a tube, thereby negating their need to honor the claim. I made the dealership aware and they tried to call, I called several mechanics and they all said the same thing. CNA is notorious for this type of inaction. Everyone, please listen - educate yourself. Don't support an organization that will tell you not to believe what you know to be true. They are basically saying - don't believe your lying eyes. They will claim industry accolades and recognitions, they will respond citing how long they've been in business, but at the end of the day - all you want is to feel as though you have the coverage you paid for. I'm here to tell you that's not the case with CNA. #runawayfromcna

Recently when submiting a claim at my local Goodyear and affiliate of Sonsio, I had a negative experience with a Rochelle the agent who responded to a legitimate claim on a right rear original tire that had a nail in the sidewall. The confusion of staying on the phone with Rochelle, whom was not very helpful in filing the claim. One hour talking about me paying out-of-pocket which was not an option. One problem was the fact that this agent did not understand that, I wanted Sonsio to pay there half upfront, which in the meantime caused difficulty with her processing or having a manager to process the claim, which is what she should have done in the first place, but she failed to do such. So, the situation of back and forth for over forty minutes became a great pain!!!!

Alvin, I believe you have us (CNA National) confused with another company. We are not, nor are we affiliated with Sonsio, the company you've referenced. We have no record of a claim being filed by you, and we do not have a claims representative by the name of Rochelle.

I'm stuck with a $4200 transmission repair for my 2016 Silverado because CNA says my tires and rims are too big and they denied my claim. But, now get this, for additional money, they will allow up to 36" rims on your truck and would pay for the repairs. No one mentioned this to me and the "no big tires" are buried in the fine print. GM has had much problems with their transmissions and what a coincidence that the trucks are 2016 models and they occur at 70,000 miles where mine is at 75,000. CNA should be ashamed of themselves. A multi billion dollar company putting a 25 year old in a financial hardship over $4200. I spoke with a supervisor after being on hold for 15 minutes and was told it's in the contract, no big wheels, but you can pay us more and have them. How sad.

Samuel, we have reviewed your claim several times previously and asked our senior claims managers to take another look. Along with the dealership evaluation, your vehicle was also inspected by a third-party to verify the cause of the transmission failure, which was determined to be due to the severely oversized tires. Our decision is based on the terms of our contract. Those terms include exclusions for tires that are larger than manufacturer specifications, unless you have purchased the custom suspension package. It should be noted that if this incident had happened during the manufacturer’s warranty period, typically it would not have been covered by the manufacturer warranty for the same reason. We apologize that you’re not completely satisfied. Should you have a covered repair in the future, you will find that we deliver on our contract promises and provide exceptional customer service.

I would choose no stars if possible. Purchased an extended warranty for 2017 CPO BMW. Paid $3800 for the privilege. Had suspension damage.Had to replace front strut, steering knuckle, front wheel bearing +hub assembly+strut mounting=wheel hub/bearing mounting bolts to knuckle. We were denied. Were told that we hit a pot hole. We live in California, there are no pot holes that could cause such damage where we live and we did not hit one or anything else that could cause this suspension failure. Quite upset.

We asked one of our senior claims managers to review your claim to ensure that it was handled correctly, and it was. The damage you reported was not caused by a mechanical failure; therefore, it is not covered under the terms and conditions of our contract with you. It is my understanding that you have already discussed this in detail with one of our representatives, who explained the reasons for the denial. We have abided by our contract with you and can offer no further assistance with regard to this matter.

Do not use this company for a warranty on a used vehicle. It is useless. They will no cover anything that fails due to being worn on a used vehicle. Purchased a warranty when buying a used car and had engine trouble 5000 miles later. They would not cover anything because the problems stemmed from worn piston rings and I could provide adequate maintenance history, even though I had no had vehicle long enough to reach its first recommended oil change. Make sure you read the contract very carefully and fully.

Had a motorcycle fixed because at times it wouldn’t start, needless to say a week later warranty ran out and bike won’t start. In the mean time my Harley inherited a scratch on gas tank while at the shop. CNA doesn’t want to have the bike towed to shop unless it was something wrong with how the shop fixed the bike. Obviously it has the same problem as when it went in! Warranty is awful and in return those people seem to enjoy bringing out the worst in people!
