The company launched nationally in March of 2012 and is currently available in over 4,500 cities and over 300 airports throughout the United States. Turo is supported by top-tier investors, including August Capital, Google Ventures, Shasta Ventures, Canaan Partners, and Trinity Ventures.

The Good

  • Variety of Vehicles Available
  • Simple Sharing Process
  • Rental Prices and Fees
  • Insurance Coverage

Variety of Vehicles Available

To cater to individual preferences, the company offers over 800 different car models to choose from. Renters can choose from cars, SUVs, minivans, trucks, convertibles, hybrids, and vans. One can also filter by rental period for long-term rentals, the vehicle make, features like all-wheel drives, and more.

Simple Sharing Process

Turo has an easy, user-friendly, and customizable rental sign-up. In order to sign up for car sharing, create a Turo account by simply signing in to your Facebook or email account.

The first time you sign up for a car, all you have to do is enter some general information, choose a car, rental date, and time. You can either decline additional insurance or purchase the Basic or Premium option, each with varying physical damage and liability protection.

In order to get the car and the keys, all the renter needs to do is meet the Turo host and show them their driver's license. Some owners will even deliver the car right to the renter. Returning the car is simple, as the renter just needs to return the car with a tank full of gas to where it was initially picked up.

Rental Prices and Fees

Turo rents vehicles priced approximately 35 percent lower than other car rental options. The price ranges depending on what car one gets. There is no membership fee and cars generally go for a flat rate of $40 per day.

In addition to rental fees, buyers may be charged fees for additional miles, parking tickets, and cleaning fees. To get the car's trip price, one must multiply the relevant trip rate advertised on the vehicle by the duration. There are also the following fees:

  • Trip Fee — 10% of trip price
  • Protection Fee — varies by if one chooses a premium (40% of car's rate), basic (15% of car's rate), or the decline option
  • Young Driver Fee — 20% fee of the trip price for people under age 25
  • Delivery Fee — varies based on owner's settings
  • Airport Fee — 10% fee of trip price if the rented vehicle is involved in the Turo Airport Lot program

It should also be noted that payment information, including debit card and credit card payments, is made through the Turo app or website, not the rental host.

Insurance Coverage

With Turo, there are private and commercial hosts. When it comes to Turo's insurance, owners can either use Turo's policies or decline coverage to be eligible for a commercial, third-party insurance policy.

When owners decline Turo's insurance coverage, they are considered a Commercial Host. As such, they must have their commercial rental insurance policy verified by Turo prior to renting any of their vehicles.

Turo's originally offered three different tiers of protection for owners to choose from. The Premium, Standard, and Basic plans (available before July 1, 2020). All three plans came with $1 million in liability coverage and physical damage protection that covers the value of the car, up to $125,000. From there, the plans differ in host deductible, cost, and other amenities.

As of July 1, 2020 Turo offers five vehicle protection plans: the 60 Plan, 70 Plan, 75 Plan, 80 Plan, and the 85 Plan.

All five plans provide up to $750,000 in third-party liability insurance (offered by Liberty Mutual) and varying levels of contractual reimbursement (reflected in the plan names) from Turo for physical damage and theft. However, bear in mind that the level of available reimbursement will vary depending on the chosen plan.

We recommend consumers thoroughly read Turo's detailed terms and conditions for more information regarding Turo's car insurance.

Guest Protection

Just as you would when you rent a car with other rental car companies, before you complete your booking, you have to choose which protection plan you want for your trip.

If you choose a commercial host, then the host will provide you with options. None of the guest plans cover mechanical or interior damage.

If you already have personal insurance, Turo's coverage will supplement your existing coverage. Policies differ in the amount of liability insurance, deductible payment required, and damage protection. We recommend you refer to the company's website for detailed information on each plan.

The Bad

  • Car Retrieval
  • Variable Restrictions
  • Availability Limitations
  • Caring for the Car

Car Retrieval

Since Turo does not operate with clients out of a specific agency, it utilizes car owners that do not use their cars on an everyday basis. Renters must meet the car owner personally in order to pick up the car. Renters may have to go out of their way to retrieve the car if there is not a Turo already at the airport.

Additionally, each renter must show the car owner his or her driver's license, which does have personal information that people may not feel comfortable sharing with a random person.

Variable Restrictions

Since Turo does not own the cars, rules and regulations are inconsistent. Some owners allow renters to drive 200 miles a day, while others allow only 100. Each owner has his or her own set of restrictions, so Turo does not have an overall list of rules for the available cars.

Availability Limitations

Turo does not offer cars in New York. People under 21 years of age cannot rent a car, and people under age 25 have to pay additional fees.

In fact, people under 25 may need to demonstrate at least two years of current U.S. licensed driving history, and potentially can only rent out certain cars because they are considered "high-risk."

Caring for the Car

One thing that is different about the Turo experience is that guests are expected to care for the car as if it were their own. So, if the exterior of the car is significantly dirtier or if it has junk food crumbles inside from a road trip, you have to take it through a car wash and vacuum it out before returning it. If not, you may be charged a cleaning fee between $30 and $250. This is a big difference between standard car rental companies and renting a car with Turo.

gavel

The Bottom Line

Travelers who want a cheap or out-of-the-ordinary rental vehicle will be satisfied with Turo's offerings. Users can choose the car model, location, and Turo host.

Finding a unique rental vehicle, on the low or high-end is made easier through Turo's growing community, where owners can use this portal to the sharing economy to make some extra money.

However, keep in mind that service is not available in New York or to potential customers under age 21, and people under age 25 must pay extra fees while renting.

As a host I have a mixed review… these renters who say they get charged $150 for a cleaning fee and all they had was a little dog hair or smoke in the car and lie about it and get charged $250 know the rules. the renter is usually fully aware of the no pets and no smoking policy and usually are told of the policy again when they are checked into the car. We charge because the next person who rents the car might be allergic to dog hair or smoke and will leave a horrible review and so we usually have to have it professionally cleaned which is easily $150… also, we have to take pics before and after the rental to prove that the customers mess is worth the charge. Turo reps make the decision based on pictures so usually the renter really didn’t give a crap and did what they wanted. as far as customer service… it is horrible on both ends. Hosts and guests. You can’t understand the person you are talking to when and if you do get someone on the phone and usually their hands seem to be tied on any help you may need. The coverage for the host is a joke. It’s not insurance, but coverage…. If you get my drift. Their insurance description is so vague that if something happens to the car you are worried sick until it’s resolved.

I booked a car through Turo about 4 weeks ago. I planned on extending the stay, but was unable to because my bank froze my card. I wasn’t able to return the car that night and did not expect my bank to freeze my car cause me to not be able to extended the trip, so I contacted the host and told them the situation and that I would would fix the card issue first thing in the morning when I spoke with my bank and pay for the extended time. The host said it was fine. They then report the vehicle as late the next morning which is fine they were just doing what they were supposed to do and following Turo regulations. My account was then suspended while they investigate or whatever they needed to do to verify everything. I did everything that was needed of me from Turo to clear my account to be able to book again with them. A few weeks ago I tried to login and my account went from restricted to terminated. I have called their customer service and chatted with various of their verification team members multiple times through the day throughout the week for about a month now and nothing have been resolved or nobody has got back with me on fixing the issue like they said they would. I keep getting told that my case was recommended to their special team and someone from that department would get in touch with me via email and nobody has for the last 4 weeks. So, I am not sure when or if I will ever be getting my account back. It was an overall good experience as far as booking and car rental goes. Just don’t encounter any problems with them because it will never get fix.

Would use again, but slightly dissapointed. I paid for 3 days for a car rental and mistakingly only put in a 51 hour time slot which is just barely over a 2 day rental to where i paid for the full 3 days/72 hours. To start off i rented the car 2 weeks previous from the trip. So the next day when i realised my mistake, i go onto the turo app and try to change/modify the trip. When i try clicking on any of the links to modify trip it pops up loading like its trying to load and then an "oops, something went wrong" notice popped up. I had a buddy acrost country try on multiple units and it relayed the same message. So at that point i email turo about the situation, which they were very polite but they said they would not be able to edit the trip on their end and i would have to do it through the app or call the number that they had. I was very busy so i waited a few days and called the number for turo and it constantly rang with no pick up or voicemail! So at that point i was kind of dissapointed and figured i would just talk to the owner day of pick up and see if there was anything he would be able to do. Vern the owner was extremely nice but inevidably was not able to modify the trip on his end as its all done through the app! The app that was not working correctly for multiple parties to edit the trip. In the end i do realise it was my mistake to start but i feel like i put sufficiant effort into editing my trip without much feedback/help on the turo side! In the end for a 200$ a day car rental i would say 100% i didnt get the full use of the car for that day and only used 270 of the 450 miles total because of it... just seeing if maybe there is something you could do on your guys end to credit the partial/full day.... once again it was an extremely fun car to drive and everyone was nice to talk to but the small glitches on turos end made it so my full 3 day rental was not fulfilled

So I love the whole concept with Turo. It was quick easy and very efficient. The major problem I had with them was my host. My host I think tried to scam me by letting me rent a defective car. The car was falling apart already (typical wear and tear) and he tried to blame me for it. First off I thought I was renting from a female, not that it mattered but it was very misleading to see a guy pull up that wasn’t in the picture with the car. Second, he started to try and solicit another business to me with renting/ buying furniture through him. I just wanted to rent a car not get pulled into another scam or business venture. Third, the car was falling apart and he said I did it when I didn’t even notice it. He started taking pics of the car then started taking the car apart and couldn’t put it back together. Even in his before pics you could see there were things wrong with the car. I didn’t notice it until he made me look at the before pics to try and convince me that I did it but I caught him. I have pictures and everything. We ended up arguing for about 30 minutes about it all. One tire was going flat, the gas cap was loose and kept setting the sensor off on the dashboard, the front bumper was popping out, detailing on the front bumper were messed up, and the car needed to be serviced altogether says the dashboard. Lastly, The guy also made me give him a good report at first before he said anything was wrong with the car which also made me very suspicious. I didn’t like the experience of it all by the end of it because I felt played... especially since I spent over $800 renting the car.

The car owner communicated well and the vehicle was great. We did have an incident that badly flavored the whole experience. During our rental the trunk latch stopped working. It was slightly inconvenient but we had small luggage so it was not too big a deal. The owner said she was turning it in per Turo contract as damage. Turo charged $500 on our credit card without contacting us. Thankfully the owner is honest and when it was covered by her warranty she told Turo and the $500 was refunded to our card. Again, however , without any communication from Turo to us. With a regular rental company the car would have been replaced by the company so as not to inconvenience us with a normal wear and tear issue that we did not cause and only happened to stop working whilst we had the car. I probably will never rent from Turo in the future after this incident.

I had some issues with the host and the turo support helped me but not enough. The host promised me a $60 back due to the late pick up and while using the car the windshield wiper took off on our road and we bought a new one for him. After that when i returned the car back the host charged us with extra miles usage and that acceptable. But the thing is he rejected to give me the $60 with the windshield wiper cost $13. So i reached out to the turo support and he said i did not promise him with $60! In the end we came up with a refund of $60 without the windshield wiper cost but i paid after all.

We have used Turo several times all with good experiences until our most recent last week. We rented a van for a quick weekend trip to San Diego, which I immediately communicated to the host Thomas A. In Tempe AZ. One tire separated 40 minutes into the trip. Host NEVER answered numerous texts, even though he has a 1 minute response time noted on his profile. Long story short we bought a brand new tire and he has yet to reply. Brakes/rotors were a concern driving in hills. I feel he knowingly put my families safety in jeopardy. Very shady host. I encourage renters review all profiles closely. With this host he had hundreds of trips but several negative reviews ifor several cars in recent weeks. Turo should actively research all safety concerns and suspend vehicle rentals until they are rectified.

All in all, Turo was a good experience. Reservation was easy to make. Logging on is easy on the app. And our overall experience went well. One of the two things that went wrong was that we were billed for a day we did not use, and I have not figured out how to address it. Our flight was cancelled, which delayed our trip, so I needed to delay the overall trip after it was supposed to begin, due to circumstances with the airline. Canceling was easy, but I was billed for one day. (Not good!). The other snafu was that my car owner forgot to set his car in the driveway, and we had difficulty picking up. (Through no fault of Turo). Those two things have ya a little I’ll feeling about the whole experience.

I like Turo. There are a couple of pain points though. Having to coordinate and exact pickup and dropoff time can be harrowing or stressful, especially when flights are concerned. I want to be able to drop off whenever I'm ready and not worry about trying to contact the owner at the last minute if things have changed. Another thing is the cleaning fee, I had to pay an additional $15, the car didnt need any cleaning though. Lastly, there was a mileage limit, that, because of some changed plans kinda hit me hard, something that would not have happened with a traditional rental. All of these are things you dont have to worry about with a traditional car rental company.

I tried booking a car with my time frame selected. The guy said the car was in the shop. I tried again, same thing. I tried booking with another guy, Turo cancelled my request and apparently gave it to someone else. I finally contacted the first guy, asking what was available and he told me he had one car, ready to go. I booked it. THEN, I was told about parking fees. I got a car with body damage and a super dirty car seat. Not cool. My wife wanted to kill me for not going the "safe route" and getting a car from Dollar. I can see the potential of this, but I don't know if I'll be renting again or recommending it because even if I saved $40 after being nickle and dimed to death, it just wasn't a very good experience.

I have rented my Car 7 times so far. I was having a good experience until one bad renter showed up. He damaged my rims and replaced my car tires with some cheap tires. I have submitted a claim. After 2 weeks of talking. They finally agreed to pay for the rims. But bad news is it is three weeks now and i am still waiting for there response on how to proceed. Everything works fine until something bad happens. Now I have to invest what i made so far and extra money from my pocket to get back my car to normal. The performance of my car is spoiled. Remember, Something happens like this. You will be hopeless. Uploading the pics prior and post the trips will help you sometimes. But its finally your car that you are risking. Just think if that lil extra dollars is really worth? If you really don't care about all this. Turo is a good platform surely to make those extra bucks and the customer service is helpful for small claims. EOD. It's your choice to make extra money or Enjoy your car?

For the most part, Turo is a great concept and allows their users who don't have a need to drive in their everyday lives, to pick one up with ease. Where they fall short is service and operations. For example, I rented a car for a business trip and the when the car was pulled up to me in the lot with the windows down, I along with all the other customers, got a strong smell of cigarette and marijuana smoke. Let me remind you, this was rented for a business trip. The attendants at the lot said I need to get in touch with Turo. Phone calls provided no help so I left an email. Did not receive a response until 3 days later. My trip ended the next day. There was no attempt to make good on this or appease my terrible experience. Granted, this was one bad experience out of a handful of good experiences but nonetheless, a bad taste in my mouth (and bad smell in my clothes for that matter).

There are no guarantees of your experience with Turo. Your car may be amazing, or full of trash and wobbly at highway speed. Your host might even decide to cancel on you at the last minute and you'll be stuck struggling to find a reservation when it would have been easy days earlier. However, if you cancel last minute, they keep all your money. The only thing that makes these troubles tolerable is that if you are in a city that is well served, you can find a car close to where you are at a reasonable price instead of going to one of the major rental agencies farther away. Also, when you have issues, if you complain enough you can get a $30 travel credit. I think they are still working the kinks out at Turo.

Very bad first impression! Booked a car, owner did not respond in a timely manner so we had to cancel. A refund was received but was over $70 short because of the difference in exchange rate. We paid with a Canadian card and the amount was in USD. However, no mention in the policies about not accounting for differences in exchange rates or else we could have acted differently (paid with a USD card). Customer service couldn't do anything, offered credit but we will not be using site again. They offered to talk to someone to put policy on site but didn't help our current situation. Very disappointed.

Feels like if I used turo frequently it would only be a matter of time before turo or a vehicle owner would hold me responsible for a vehicle issue or charge me more than the agreed upon amount. The experience is far from confidence inspiring. And the whole process of getting transport to and from a rental vehicle just adds hassle, time, and more costs to the whole process. I think Il probably stick to real car rentals and save myself the trouble before it happens.

I think that if the owner has a toll tag account and the driver takes the toll road that should be allocated in with the fee for the car. Other exotic car rental agencies do this and so should Turo. I also think that the tires should be inspected and they should be not heavily worn down when you’re renting an exotic vehicle. This definitely makes the handling of the car much rougher as well as dangerous.

I like turo, I think it’s somewhat cheaper to rent directly from people rather than Vehicle rental chains. But I give it a 3 because I’ve tried to contact the turo 24/7 support and I couldn’t get a hold of them. I had some small questions that I couldn’t get answered. I’d like some promo codes sent to my email more often too to save money. I’d also would like the advertising price not be at the week rate if I’m planning to just rent for a few days. The day rate and week rate have a big difference.

My first trip was a disaster, and I still haven’t received a refund for my groupon that I purchased, which is the only reason I decided to try this out. Greatly dislike - no transparency on the pricing upfront Price shown is never the price you get, as there are things of top Any price filter is useless them, as I have to go and check each option to get real price, and not fake one Also the sign up process was not smooth - I as marked as approved, but once I actually clicked "rent" I was said "oh, wait, we decided to verify you _now_", even thought I was clearly shown as Approved already That's also kind of cheating.

First of all I did not get the Auto I was suppose to get. When I got my Auto was very disappointing it was very dirty in and out. It says to have the Auto car wash before returning we refuse to do. Then we had trouble with this Auto the front was coming off so they replace it with another Auto got also dirty in and out. Return auto with full tank but no car wash. So with all the trouble we had the owner gave me $10 refund. This was our first experience. Hope you will make it better. You have good prices. Thank you

I felt that 2 of your turo owners were not really committed to your company commitment to service. If you look at my file you will see that one twice canceled her offer and Turo never felt the need to help me until I called. The second one was also unprofessional. I felt as if I were dealing with a hustler. Hasan, my third try, was professional but only after consuming hours of back and forty with amateurs who wanted to make a couple of bucks on the side with older cars they had sitting around. The business model for LA doesn't work unless you get control of these weak links.

The hosts are amazing. You find really nice/high end cars compared to rental companies. But, the trip fees are way too high. They say it's 10% of the trip fee, but that's not true. It's usually from 50% to 100% of the rental itself. And, I've taken about 9 trips with Turo.

Customer service agents should be trained more in regards with call handling time. Also, give them more access on the program, not just picking up and transferring calls. For Billers, add more people, it takes forever for someone to pickup calls.

I think that Turo needs to do a better job with making sure that drivers are posting legal cars. There are also so many fees that are not listed in the original listings, for one car I had to pay about an additional 100 dollars in fees once the rental was complete. I do like the accessibility overall of Turo. They make it easier to pick up transportation but it definitely could use adjustments in those areas.

My personal experience with the rental was not up to my expectations however it was too late for me to choose another vehicle. The brakes on the car needed to be repaired as well as damage to the exterior of the car.

The people who I rented the car from charged me extra for mileage. I don't have a problem with that, but the mileage was too short of a distance. I live in Southern California and rented the car for a weekend trip. Unless you stay 1 hour away, it's pretty much impossible to keep the car under a certain mileage.

Great idea to rent cool cars. When I looked on the app to see what I could get, there was no good cars. All were much older and looked like crap. Its just another lame business for poor people to try and get more money for doing nothing other than offering their crap cars.

The holds on my account have gotten very inconvenient and confusing. I don't have any emails or phone calls from anyone explaining what is going on and how to resolve it.

last experience was not great due to safety and cleanliness issues with the vehicle. Great idea for a company, but needs to be better regulation of hosts and vehicles.

Improve customer service. A few times already ive been very inconvenienced however they try to make it up in the end with a credit towards another ride

Did not like that I Extended original drop off time and was charged for an additional day. Did not give me option to see price change before approving extension.

I think if someone is going to rent their own vehicle, they should make sure that the vehicle is clean and everything works.

The fees are getting too high, i liked Turo much better last year when the rates were lower. But anything else is fine
