The Good

  • High Frame and Contact Allowances
  • Out of Network Benefits

High Frame and Contact Allowances

Vision Service Plan has one of the best frame allowances when compared to its competitors. The company offers a $150 allowance for either frames or contacts, which makes it better than most of the percentage-based discounts that other providers offer. It’s also one of the higher allowances for contact lenses in the industry.

Out of Network Benefits

Vision Service Plan also has some great benefits for out of network members. Eye exams are covered up to $45, frames are covered up to $70, and contacts up to $105. Once again, this is one of the better deals when it comes to contact lenses. Vision Service Plan’s network encompasses more than 30,000 providers as well, so there’s a good chance you’ll be able to find someone within the network.

The Bad

  • Higher Premiums
  • Higher Copays

Higher Premiums

Starting at $15 per month, Vision Service Plan has a significantly higher premium than many of its competitors. Premium plans start at $30 per month, and family plans start at $39 per month. However, there are no enrollment fees, which is something to consider when factoring all costs into your decision.

Higher Copays

With Vision Service Plan, all eye exams have a copay of $15. This is also on the higher end of the spectrum when compared to its competitors. When combined with the higher premiums, it doesn’t make for the most cost effective plan.

The Bottom Line

Vision Service Plan tends to charge higher prices, but strives to benefit customers by saving them money in the long run on glasses, contacts, and lenses. With no enrollment fee, there’s also fewer upfront costs. If you’re okay with paying a bit more every month, you’ll get many added benefits that other vision insurance providers don’t offer.

We have had this service for years and are very pleased with it. We are provided with excellent vision care and as a result have been able to take prompt action on any vision issues we have been faced with. There has never been any worry about cost to us with either glasses for us or recent cateract operations. What a relief to have this care available!!

very simple to use, when it comes to an insurance product. website very clearly articulates the costs of service, and the benefits used. best thing is, just about all eye care places take VSP, and it is integrated to their systems, to make transactions really easy

Great coverage. Good doctors that accept this insurance, even the times we've been in need of an ophthalmologist. the only improvement I would wish for is a greater option of lenses to choose from that are fully covered.

Lots of value with VSP. For a small premium I get a lot of benefits for my whole family which we use every year. Never had a problem with a claim and seems to work really well with the providers.

I have this through my company. I have no complaints. My yearly eye exam is covered. My glasses are partially covered. I normally get extras to my glasses like scratch resistance.

I have really enjoyed VSP. Their plans are simple and can be added to most insurances. There are some offices that are not familiar with them and that is frustrating but I feel like that is on the office, not VSP.

There is not a lot to like about VSP. I have mostly used their web site to manage my employer-provided vision insurance, but the site is horribly difficult to navigate and find what you need. I have submitted one insurance claim for contact lenses via the web site, and got a confirmation email that it was received. However, I had not heard any update on the claim so I went back and after a long time looking for my past claims on the unorganized website, I finally found the status of my claim was "call customer service". Thanks VSP, that would have been great to know, and what a hassle!

I chose to have a VSP for my wife and I as we are getting up there in age. The plan has been amazing for our needs and the service has been even better. We have found great providers that accept this insurance close to our home and have been very helpful with our vision health.

VSP is a great plan to have if you need eye care. The out of network submissions are a good option for when your provider is not in network. Claims are easy to submit.

Always been impressed with their customer service. I have always been able to get coverage information when I needed it. And the coverage has always been fair.

We had the VSP for many years in California and it was a good plan - certainly made it easier to get new glasses every couple years as we needed to do.

I had VSP at my work for awhile. I thought they were great and getting your money back quickly when you needed to submit an out-of-network claim.

Our family vision plan. We have used it for the past 10 years and we found it is cost effective since everyone in the family needs to change glasses every year.

I've had no complaints with VSP yet. The eyeglass store I shop at accepts them, and am happy with the services they've provided!

The rates are easily affordable. The allowance on frames makes glasses very affordable. Additional discounts are offered for transition and progressive lens.

One free exam and frame every year. I love that. It's worth the price and I get to get cute new glasses that match the new year's trends

I don't like that there isn't a card and that the provider has to look up the insurance by SSN. Other than that they've been great.
